MPEG2 Exporter Question (16:9 vs 4:3)

When I want to export a 4:3 to M2V, I always render my movies at 720x480, because the exporter is terrible at scaling. If I try to export a 640x480 movie to M2V, it always is distorted when I play it back. If I render the movie at 720, I don't have this problem I assume because the exporter doesn't have to scale the movie. Problem solved.
What size do I need to render my movie so that the MPEG2 exporter doesn't have to scale it when I want a 16:9 output? I've read 720x405, but the exporter always gives me a 720x404 and I haven't been able to get a clean output yet at 16:9.
I just need to know what resolution to give the exporter so that it doesn't have to re-scale the output at 16:9.
Thanks.
-Tony

Standard definition NTSC 4:3 and 16:9 both use 720x480 -- they are just flagged and scaled differently upon playback (656x480 or 875x480).

  • MPEG2 Export failed

    Hi all,
i´m running in problems generating MPEG2 (m2v) with compressor.
That´s what i´m usually doing (worked 100 times before, last time 28.03.2008):
I´m rendering out a video MJPEG A PAL from AfterEffects.
Then I´m using a Compressor Droplet to generate a approval Version for my clients (QT Sor3 halfres) and a MPEG2 file as final delivery.
But now the MPEG2 Export fails. Find the error report at the end of this thread.
I tried it with the last files when it worked, also failed.
I tried another MPEG2 Preset (the apple ones) -> failed.
Playing MPEG2 Files using QT-Player and VLC works fine.
    Any help highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Chris

The source frame rate is 23.976, so I guess I would go with 24p. My intention is to upload the file to a streaming video website. They have their specs laid out for me, I just happen to be new to all of this so I am having a tough time meeting them.
My question right now is, if i have selected the MXF OP1a XDCAM option with XDCAM 50 NTSC (4:2:2) video codec, will the export be in mpeg2 and what will my bit rate be? I have no way of viewing the bit rate with this configuration.
Here is a screen grab of their required specs:

  • No compressor or mpeg2 export what next

OK enjoying new Intel Macpro, installed all my editing software, FCP 5.1.4, Motion, DVDSP 4, compressor 2. Lo and behold, big surprise, Compressor 'cannot connect to background process'. In the past this app has been a curse for me but I always had a QT mpeg2 export option so I reached for it and I no longer have it although I have QT pro.
Followed apples exhaustive and exhausting troubleshooting procedure ( into two days now with this painful goose chase )
updated everything but still 'cannot connect to background process'. Even exported a QT movie and tried importing it into Compressor but same result.
I imported the qt movie into DVDSP and it encoded it but I've no control over what its doing so what else are my options for encoding mpeg2?

    Hello,
    You wrote:
CAN THIS ERROR CAUSE BIG DESASTER TO DB IN FUTUREThe error message EXP-00091: Exporting questionable statistics just warns you that the statistics
were exported but these statistics may be not useable.
So, if you have to import these Tables, you may have to collect again the statistics of these Tables.
It's not relative to this problem but why don't you use DataPump (expdp/impdp) ?
Please find enclosed a link about DataPump, it's much more powerful than the classical export/import:

    Hi,
    >>because I exported dump from oracle10G
Then you use the exp 10g version, right ? To move data DOWN a version(s), you need to export using that lower versions EXP tool and using IMP that lower version tool.
Take a look at this below?

I think that there is no problem ... but you can use also as I said before the statistics=none clause, but remember that you need to use the exp 9i version ...

  • Looking for Best MPEG2 Export

So I just created a DVD in FCP HD and DVD SP. The animated menu was created using FCP and Photoshop. I exported the Animated Menu as an MPEG2 in FCP using Compressor. My boss, who has the worst case OCD and and even worst of ADHD, says the quality isn't good enough. He said the Harry Potter DVDs look better than mine. I told him to call Waner Bros. He didn't like that. Anyway...does anyone have an idea how to get Harry Potter quality on my MPEG2 Exports.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Make a New Preset in Compressor, MPEG2.
Use 7.5 average, 7.5 high, 2 Pass VBR, Best.
Then for your audio, use A.Pack or make a new audio preset in Compressor 2.
    Under AUDIO tab:
    - Audio Coding Mode: Choose 2/0 (L, R).
    - Data rate: 192 kbps is the Dolby-recommended setting
    if you're just using 2/0 L,R Stereo.
    - Dialog Normalization: -31 dBFS.
    Under BITSTREAM tab:
    - Dolby Surround Mode: Choose NOT Dolby Surround Encoded,
so DVD players will know it's not surround.
    - I also un-check the "Copyright Exists", so as not to
    hinder copying the DVD.
    Under PREPROCESSING tab:
    - Compression Preset: Change to None.
    - Leave all checkboxes at the default.
This should create a decent quality encode.
But, your boss has to realize that the Hollywood movie are encoded with very expensive hardware encoders with multiple passes.
There is no way that Compressor or any software encoder is going to come close to those encoders.
    See how those settings go...

  • Mpeg2 export option gone?

I have found that Apple no longer puts the mpeg2 export option through quicktime or FCP. It kind of makes you use the super slow less quality compressor [in my eye]. I need this option .... My other rig has it somewhere but I cant find the extension anywhere .... does anyone know an easy fix to get this back on my new rig?

Should be there using QT Export from Final Cut Pro (the second Quicktime Export not Final Cut Self Contained or Reference Version) and also still in QT, at least for me, Reinstall may help (I am using Tiger 10.4.2 and the recent Final Cut Suite)

  • Basic Exporting Question

My main question is a very basic exporting question, but here is a super-condensed explanation of my big-picture goal for context:
Large (~450 MB) aiff on CD --> trim w/ Quicktime --> small (~16 MB) MP3 in iTunes
I would like to take an audio file (aiff) that is approximately 450 MB and export it from Quicktime and in doing so, reduce the file size and convert it to MP3. When I simply try to export it, it doesn't ask me about what size I want, nor does it give the option of MP3 formatting.
I have figured out how to reach my goal, but it's a mess. After I make my trims in QT, I have to:
    1. select "share" instead of "export".
    2. It asks me what size I want and I select small.
    3. The file is then exported as a Quicktime movie into Mail and the size is reduced from 450 MB to about 20 MB.
    4. I then have to "right-click" on the attachment in the email that is created,
    5. save the attachment,
    6. discard the email,
    7. import the file into iTunes, and
    8. create an MP3 in iTunes to finally arrive at my goal.
This seems like a ridiculously convoluted process to change a large aiff to a small MP3 and put it in iTunes. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I guess the basic answer to my question is that it can't be done in one or two fell swoops. The problem is that it starts on a burned disc, and I need to make edits to it before it ends up in iTunes (to be eventually used in iWeb). I was hoping to avoid juggling back and forth between iTunes and QT. I either would have to send it back to QT to do the edits after -->iTunes-->mp3, or import the large file from the CD to QT, make the edits, save changes, import large file to iTunes, convert to mp3.

  • Exporting question #53427

I read through exporting questions for over the last year, but I came away more confused than ever. Here is my problem (which others had, but I'm looking for the quickest solution):
I made a 3 hour video on iMovie 8 only to read about its limitations afterward. I used information I found on some post to download iMovie 6 and then export my iMovie 8 project to it for its finalization.
I tried to export the movie LARGE size and it took 6 hours only to end up with the message error -2125.
I then tried to export to Quicktime, but it was scheduled to take 30+ hours.
Is there an easier way to get the iMovie 8 project into iMovie 6 in order to complete it?
(As a side note, I have a 2003 copy of Final Cut Pro which I have not installed. Would this be worth installing on my MacBook to transfer the project to that?)
    Thanks as always.

iDVD accepts projects of up to 120min.. so 2 DVD would be enough, allthough ≤60min allow the best quality in iDVD ..

  • Basic importing/exporting question

I have been creating web videos for some time for a few companies. I bring all of the clips in as dv files, mess with them in FCP, then export to mov. I then use CS4 encoder to convert them to mp4's. Works great. My question is I have a project where the client is wanting the project on DVD's to pass out to his customers. Do I still bring the clips in as dv and export as mov? Do I bring them into FCP as mov's? When I bring movs into FCP I have to render them every time I sneeze. DV's are instantaneous...as we all know.
Any help would be great. Looking for the highest quality available.

".mov" is not a format, it's a wrapper-- a DV could be a .mov, just as an mp4 could too. If you've been having trouble rendering .movs, then you need to check your sequence settings to make sure they match the actual format of the video.
Regarding DVD export, the best way is to export from FCP as a Quicktime Movie (not Quicktime Conversion) using Current Settings-- this will give you the highest possible quality. Then transcode to MPEG2 using Compressor (or, if you feel so inclined CS4 Encoder) and burn them with any DVD authoring app (iDVD, Toast, DVDSP, etc.)

  • MPEG2-DVD question

I have a premiere CS5 project with HD 1920x1080p 24fps.  I have (2) 45 minute timelines and I am using Encore to author my DVD.
Please help me understand the best way to approach this.
My first thought was to import both premiere timelines into encore and create the dvd.  The resulting project was about 6GB so I used a Dual Layer DVD-9 for the burn.
From reading comments here, I got the impression that exporting from Premiere and creating MPEG2-DVD files might be a better option for better quality.   I did this using Match Source Attributes and created two export files which I then brought into a new Encore project.  The resulting project totals about 4GB.
Did I do this right?   If this seems right, is the quality going to be the same using the second method?   If the second method is good, I would be happy as I would be able to use less expensive single layer DVDs vs dual layer DVDs.
Please let me know the best way to approch this.
    Thanks
    Ted

    Ted,
Glad you're asking these questions because they are exactly what I want to know too.
I have been importing sequences from Pr, then using the Progressive Hi Q 7Mb VBR 2-pass preset, which looked to be the highest quality preset.
However, after a series of problems (associated with multiple sequences in the one timeline), I re-coded using the Automatic preset.
I compared DVDs produced by the two presets on a high quality player.
I couldn't spot any differences in colour, contrast, brightness, etc, but I could see that when objects moved, the Automatic gave clearer motion! ie, less edge artifacts (can't remember the correct term).
This surprised me because I always thought a 2-pass encode was superior to a 1-pass one.
So, until I find out more about encoding, I'll stick to the Automatic preset for projects I encode in Encore.
Might try encoding in Premiere Pro  -  as Ann suggests.
Nevertheless, i'd be interested in your findings.
    Thanks
    Erik

  • Encoding artefacts (macroblocs) in MPEG2 export

    Hello everyone,
Media encoder is producing strange artefacts that really make my video badly encoded. I’m encoding for a DVD, from a 1080p25 video to MPEG2. Here is an example (animated GIF) :
As you may noticed, there is a shift in the encoding process every 12 frames. Each 12 frame appears severely more compressed than the other frames, the macroblocs appearing very clearly.
Good image vs bad image comparison (I added a filter to emphasize the problem).
    Every 12 frames :
    Any other frame :
We clearly see some macroblocs, which are probably the N frames, because they are set every 12 seconds in the settings. Here are the settings I used :
I tried to encode the video with another software (Sorenson Squeeze), and it works well, so I don't think it's related to the video source.
If you have answers to the following questions, that would help me a lot!
Did anyone encountered the same issue (with the MPEG2 codec or another)?
Any idea of what I should do to solve the problem?
Thanks a lot for your help.

I'm surprised I'm the only one facing this problem here, I begin to think there is something wrong with my editing station.
Just to be sure this is my configuration and not the software, I've uploaded a small DNxHD file here (5 sec. long) with an AME presets.
Could someone please test the export in AME, with the "MPEG2 Tento" setting, and compare it with the .m2v file I've exported, to see if I'm the only one facing this problem?
It will be interesting to compare results and see if the files are 100% the same pixel by pixel.
    Thanks!

  • File Export question and ID3 Tags

First question, have tried using Apple's recommended method of using QT Pro to export movies as "iPod" but when attempting to sync to an iPod get an incompatible file format. What is the "right" export option?
Secondly, on one file I've imported it into iTunes then set all the ID3 fields to my liking, then uploaded into iTunes U but the fields are incorrect. I've tried deleting the file from iTunes U several times and re-imported the file into iTunes and set the ID3 fields and still nothing. Any suggestions on how to get my file up and hold the ID3 fields info?
    thanks

If you've been having ID3 issues with MP3s, that was recently corrected (well, just the album art thing, everything else worked as far as I know). I've had bad luck with third party ID3 tag editors, so we are recommending people do it through iTunes.app
Since you are already doing that, I'd be worried that my site was set to overwrite the tags (this is an option). If you're the admin, you can check it, otherwise you can ask them.

  • Standard Midi File Import/Export Questions

    Hi,
I'm having some trouble with Standard MIDI files, in that, after exporting them, and importing them back into another Logic project to test them, some of them will split/demix. That is, instead of one MIDI region appearing, it imports as two MIDI regions, with the notes of the part split between the two regions (the notes seem to split according to velocity, not note value).
Here is my question related to this:
Is it possible to export a Standard MIDI File for each "part" in a project, rather than one SMF for all the MIDI files in a project? (i.e., create one SMF for each software instrument track)? This is what I'm trying to do. The reason is that I'm trying to prepare and save some MIDI files to include with the audio files in a remix pack, and, since it's likely that the various remixers will be using different DAWs such as Cubase, I'm assuming that a SMF that includes all the various parts might not import into their program correctly. Is my assumption wrong? I.E., will most DAWs, like Cubase, etc., correctly import a SMF that includes all parts, and upon import split those parts correctly?
I'm following all the instructions for "Saving Standard MIDI Files" from the Logic Pro manual, except that I am not merging all the different instruments' MIDI regions together; I'm only merging each individual parts' MIDI regions.
    Thanks!

Well I think the problem is solved. There was a conflict between Logic and iLife 06. I bought a new computer this week and had to load everything into it. I decided not to put in iLife 06 yet including Garageband and all the jam packs. I loaded all the new .caf files off the Logic DVD
I opened a midi file and all tracks loaded with Logic instruments. the problem was that a lot of the instruments had been erased somehow or over written by Logic studio. Now I believe they are all there and things are working as they should

  • How to export question

Quick question, I recently upgraded from FCE 2 to FCE 3.5HD. Before, when I was done with a project I would just export the sequence to Compressor and it would launch Compressor and have the sequence loaded in Compressor. Now with FCE 3.5, when I export my sequence, it launches Compressor, but it is blank. I do not know how to get me finished sequence in there....any help would be appreciated....

Export your movie as QT-movie, non-self contained or self contained (bigger file).
Open compressor and import the file.
