MPEG2 - imovie 08 to imovie 06

Hi all,
Looking at a few HDD cmacorders (still looking at the non tape option) they seem to save in MPEG2 format which can be imported / edited using imovie 08 according to the apple specs sheet.
Once imported can the files be shared or transferred for editing in Imovie 06HD which doesnt support this format but has more editing options than 08 by the sound of things. If so, is it easy? how?

Get rid of the previous converted video attempts.
Open MPEG Streamclip.
Go to File > Open Files. Choose one of your MPEG2 files.
Go to Edit > Fix Timecode Breaks. This will take a moment.
Go to Edit > Export to QuickTime. You will see a dialog with a button at the top which reads "Motion JPEG A". Click on this button and change it to DV NTSC. Set the Quality slider at 100%.
Highlight the Reinterlace Chroma checkbox. Click on Make Movie, choose a name and a place to save the file. Repeat for the other MPEG2 files.
Open Final Cut Pro. In the menu bar, go to *Final Cut Pro* > Easy Setup. Choose DV NTSC (with the Anamorphic option if the original material was 16:9 widescreen). Click OK.
Go to the menu bar again: Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset. Click OK. Save the project.
Import your converted files and start editing.

Mpeg2 import to imovie?

I have mpeg2 dvd that we can't edit with imovie. is there any software that will convert it?

I followed these steps and talked with Apple Tech support 3 times...but I still cannot im port my MPEG2 file into iMovie. The file is 4.3GB.
Here's what I have done so far:
- Purchased Apple's MPEG2 extension ($20)
- Used MPEG Streamclip 1.8 to export the MPEG2 file to DV
- Tried to use iMovie to import or open the DV file...it gives me a vague error.

I also have Jolly's problem. I found the iMovie 9.0.9 folder and tried to launch the older version of iMove. It would not launch. I removed all of the iMovie preferences from the Preferences folder, removed iMove 10 from the applications folder, and restarted my Mac. iMove 9.0.9 still won't launch and I can't access my videos created with the older version of iMovie. Is there a way to uninstall iMovie 10 and reinstall iMovie 9.0.9?
I am running Yosemitie on a iMac.

Why Are there question marks in my dock that says iphoto, imovie and imovie hd after resetting my dock?

My iBook G4 used to belong to my mums friend. After having it and using it for 2 years, I did a dock reset. Now There are question marks saying iphoto, imovie and imovie hd. I don't have the installation disk with me so how do I get these apps back?

Do you know which versions they were? Sometimes they came on an iLife disc; sometimes on an Applications disc or Restore disc with the original software package that came with the iBook when it was new.
Doing a Dock reset would not have removed these applications from the Applications folder.
If they are no longer in the Applications folder, you will have to reinstall them from a disc.
Which exact iBook model is it?

Handbrake (free) can recover from the DVD into an editable file you can use in iMovie.

If you need a MPEG2 file to burn a DVD, why does imovie not offer this format as an option?

How can I get USB camcorder MPEG2 files into iMovie

I have a G4. The version of iMovie that will allow a direct connect of my new Panasonic 60 GB camcorder won't work on my older mac. Does anyone know of a way that I can get the MPEG2 files (they don't look like MPEG2 files) off of the hard drive of my camcorder so that I can get them into iMovie. I am able to mount the camera's hard drive and can see all the files. They have .mod and .moi extensions on them.

First you need the MPEG-2 Playback Component from Apple (19,99$). Then download the MPEG-Streamclip from the internet.
Copy the mod-files at your Mac (you don't need the moi). Open Mpeg-Streamclip and drag the mod's in the application. Convert all files to dv.

Importing VOB(mpeg2) files into imovie?

I have a home video which i wanted to edit on my mac, so i got it burnt onto DVD. how can i now get it into imovie. i have tried mac the ripper but it couldn't rip the disc although it did recognise it and i could play it in the dvd player.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IMovie 08, iMovie 6, or Final Cut Express

I just got a new Sony HDR-SR12 HD camera. It records in 1080i. I tried iMovie 08, but I don't like the export options. I used the iMovie 08 import .mov file and opened it in iMovie 6. I exported the video and it doesn't look that good. I'm thinking about Final Cut Express but I don't know how it integrates with iLife apps. What's the best option?

iMovie 08 imports AVCHD in full 1080i. The AVCHD is converted to Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080.
The issue comes when you render the project. The iMovie 08 presets max out at 960x540 for Apple TV. Apple TV looks very good because most TVs will upscale it back to 1920x1080.
It is possible to export to Quicktime in full 1920x1080.
However, then you have the problem of how to play it back.
You can play it back at 1920x1080 on your Mac, if your screen is large enough.
You can play it back on a Sony Playstation 3.
You can play it on a BluRay Disk Player.
Toast 9 permits burning a BluRay Disk in full 1920x1080. You will need a BluRay disk Burner for this. Toast 9 also lets you do a short AVCHD/Bluray disk on a regular DVD on a regular DVD burner, but you are limited to about 20 minutes of playing time.
If you burn to a normal DVD in MPEG2, you are limited to 480i, so that is the worst option.

Saving to QT "CD" quality , differences between iMovie 5 & iMovie 6

Hi, iMovie 6 seems to save movies to QT "CD" quality differently from iMovie 5 , this is causing me problems with a site I work with. Can anyone tell me if this is a quirk of my settings or is a general "issue". How do you get iMovie 5 to save to 320 x 240 rather than 320 x 230?

You may want to look beyond iMovie. Visual Hub can convert to CD quality, ie, mpeg1 (and many other formats such as Flash-check to see if other formats would be better for streaming). MPEG Streamclip can also convert Quicktime files to other formats (check whether it can convert to mpeg1). It is free, but typically you need to buy Apple's mpeg2 plug-in. Roxio Toast can create VideoCDs (that have mpeg1 files) and can do a number of file format conversions.

Importing error - from iMovie to iMovie

I have two iMovie projects. I want to import one of 5 clips from Project One into Project Two. But I get an error when I try to import Clip 01:
"The file Clip 01 is the wrong video standard and cannot be imported in this project."
I can import the other 4 clips from the same file just fine. AND, I can import Clip 01 into a new project. But for some reason, I can't import it into the ONE project I want. The worst part? My DV camera just broke and I can't re-import from the tape. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, it's imported right from my DV camera. It should be NTS. I imported it into a new file, thinking that I would then import Project Two in the new file. But when I tried importing Project Two, I got the same "not a standard video format" error that I got in the first place. Something's not jibing.

If there ever was a NEW update for iMovie, will iMovie have the ability to burn projects onto a Blu-Ray disc so that customers don't have to pay for additional software like Final Cut Pro or Roxio Toast Titanium/Pro?

It would be helpful for those who are familier with iMovie to use Blu-Ray discs for burning and playing back their iMovie projects in HD. However, iMovie '11 doesn't have that special feature yet. I hear that 'Final Cut Pro X,' 'Roxio Toast 11 Titanium' and 'Roxio Toast 11 Pro' can copy projects like iMovie onto Blu-Ray, but it would take long periods of time to do that. Professional software, like FCP X and Toast, can be pricey.
I'm hoping that iMovie '11 will burn projects onto Blu-Ray, but will that ever come true?

Will iBlu-Ray be an upgrade? OR and update of iDVD?
If it's an upgrade, then that means you'd still pay for it from the Mac App Store. I wish it would only cost between $20-40.
If it's a free update of iDVD, but with the new name, that would be better than to go out and pay for things!!!
However, external Blu-ray recorders would still be required if you were going to burn an iMovie project onto a blu-ray disc.

DV / iMovie 06 / iMovie 08.

Hi Guys.
While I certainly do not want to start the debate over 06 vs. 08, I would like to ask a few pointed questions specific to my issue.
At the present time I have about 25 hours of DV tape that I would like to get into a digital format. I was thrilled when I heard about what iMovie 08 could do and was excited to start the process. But as I am sure you can imagine I was taken back by all the negative comments about iMovie 08. More specifically, the comments about importing DV and the quality there after. From the comments I have been reading, it appears Apple made iMovie 08 for producing web content and not, what I would call, quality output. Yet others seem to thing 08 is great, or at least not as bad as people are making it out to be.
Really my questions revolve around the stock import and what to do.
So the questions are:
1. How should I be importing this video to get as loss less an import as I can? Is iMovie the best product to do this?
2. On import, should I be tailoring the settings (if possible), to give me the best quality I can? How?
3. What will the default file format be? Is it the same from iMovie 06 to 08?
4. Once the video is imported, is it easy to move it around to other drives, etc without screwing up iMovie?
5. Are my thoughts on bringing these DV tapes into a digital medium sound? Do most people just bring in what they need or bring in everything?
I guess in the end I just do not want to have to re-import 25 hours of video because I used either the wrong program or the wrong settings. I am sure you can relate, as DV is a one to one time relation.
Any comments to set me straight would be fantastic!

the best way for longtime storage is simple keeping the tapes.
if you want to 'transfer' the tapes onto harddrives, the app should use 'dv' as codec .. which is the one in use on your miniDV tapes...
iMHD≤6 was a DVeditor, meaning: the process of import was a copy process.. just bits&bytes were shuffled from tape to drive .. no quality loss. same with output.. internal codec was dv, output dv.. if you haven't 'manipulated' the clips (titles, audio etc), then there was no re-compressing...-
iM08 is different, you've seen the many threads... something happens inside and we speculate, the output-quality depends on hardware of Mac (which is quite new to us...).
for handling a 'database' of many tapes and zillions of clips, iMHD≤6 is bad choice.. imports are well-hiddin inside packages, the file-structure of those packages is 'fragile', not meant to be manipulated manually, most of all: the concept of iMHD≤6 is 'one import, one movie' ... 'sharing' a clip to many projects..? sorting the clips? kinda Library...? no, that is not what iM≤6 is made for ..
for those needs, iM08 is your choice: a Library, automatic 'catalogization' of imports, sharing clips to many projects..
summary:
* to catalog and 'search'n find' many clips, 3rd party apps (iDive?) are probably better
* for an easy access of 'all' videos, as in iTunes for music, or iPhoto for ..ehm, photos, iM08 is better
* for sharing to Disks, web, mail, youtube, again iM08 is choice No.1 for convenience ...
* for longtime storage: dv imports 13GB/h (iM6/8); do backups!; convert to 'actual' codecs; do backups! ... or, stay with tapes...
... ah, and don't miss the update to iM08 vers.7.1 (... who's in charge for that number scheme?!)

IMovie or iMovie HD

I am new to mac computers. I started using imovie to edit home movies to put on DVD. I am not making full length features, just taking out garbage clips, adding transitions and chapters and titles and burning to DVD to watch in the future. I see now there also imovie 09 and FinalCut.
Can anyone tell me which is the best software to use for the purpose I want to use it?

There was a lot of pain from iMovie fans when Apple bought out iMovie '08, but, from the surface it looks like iMovie '09 addresses a lot of these early complaints. The one thing they haven't reneged on is sharing from iMovie '08 / '09 to iDVD.
Again, it would seem (at least from the online tutorials), if DVD is your intended end media, then iMovie HD 6 (depending on your camcorder model of course) is still the best choice as here you can add chapter markers integrally and share to iDVD from within the application without the need for extra steps (via Garageband, or, via Final Cut Express). It's a shame, because iMovie '09 looks to be a great step forward from Apple, but it seems as an organisation they have decided DVD's are a thing of the past.

IMovie vs iMovie HD

Now I am really confused, and this may be a really silly question. When I first started using iMovie a couple of weeks ago, I guess it was the HD version (5.0.2). I imported some 8 mm video tape yesterday--apparantly into iMovie (version 3.0). What is the difference? Should I use only the HD version or does it matter? If I should be using the HD version, can I simply drag and drop from version 3, or will I need to import the file some other way?

iMovie HD handles non-HD video just as well as previous versions.
I suppose it is a bit of a misnomer. It's not exclusively for HD it's just that it can now handle HD.
For a variety of reason, some folks keep older versions of iMovie on their computers. But I think for most, iMovie HD (5.0.2) is the way to go.
