MPEG2 in FinalCutPro

All,
I work for a company who build "TriCaster" which is a portable live production device (visit http://www.newtek.com/tricaster/ for more information.) As part of this and out other products we write industry standard MPEG-2 files which pass all of the MPEG-2 compliance tests.
Unfortunately we still have a good number of FCP users who are reporting problems with these files and I wanted to post here to see if anyone can give me assistance in working out how to make them work reliably.
These files are standard NTSC video, so are normally 720x480 lines, 4:3 aspect ratio. The field dominance is upper (the first line on the image is field 1, the second line on the image is field 2.) I have uploaded an example file to this URL :

I would very much appreciate anyone who can help us understand what set of settings FCP requires to import and use this file correctly.

This is an I-Frame only MPEG file, so should edit just fine without transcoding; indeed high bit-rate I-Frame only MPEG2 is pretty much the format of choice in most medium to high end live production. Every other NLE we have worked with so far seems to have no real problem with these files, so I am just assuming that this is a problem of our lack of knowledge with FCP.

FCE-HD Fails when trying to Export MPEG2

I am trying to export mpeg2 files so DVD Studio Pro 1.5 can use them.
However, When I try to export from FCE-HD using quicktime mpeg2 format, it causes the application to fail with the following error.
Please help.

I want to burn it to DVD. I want to create DVDs with no menu navigation, just play track after track, or one large track consisting of videos mixed-edited in FCE. Don't I have to export my project from FCE to DVDSP to do that? iDVD doesn't seem to give you the option to create a DVD without a menu, except as a lead in track that ends with a menu.

Putting back MPEG2 Option in Final Cut Pro

Ok guys and gals, please help! I desperately want to put back the MPeg2 option back in Final Cut Pro. I just installed Final Cut Studio 6.1 and yes, I realize it deleted the option. But I really want it back, and no, I dont want to embrace Compressor at this time. Does anyone know a work-around on how to do this? I tried reinstalling previous versions but no luck. Final Cut 3.0 puts it back in..but on my husbands mac, he was able to somehow KEEP the option in Final Cut 6.0!!! Driving me crazy...please help if you can. THANKS!! I'm working with a brand new Imac with the latest version of Tiger.

Media Encoder CC mpeg2 Question

Basically what the title says. Where exactly is the option to format a video into an mpeg2 file? I've been Googling this to death. I know I've seen some people say they had it, then it disappeared. But I literally just downloaded Media Encoder and its nowhere to be found. Even under the DVD and Blue-ray section, the only options are for Blue-ray. I need to burn a wedding video onto a DVD. Is there something special you have to do to get this done? Are there limits on the free trial version that don't allow mpeg2 downloads? Help!

Are you using AME CC 2014? MPEG2 is included in AME under more strict license than other formats and is only activated only if you have Premiere Pro CC 2014, AfterEffects CC 2014 or Prelude CC 2014. If you are using them under a free trial, MPEG2 becomes unavailable after a trial period expires. After a trial has been expired, AME CC 2014 can be used extra 30 more days, but without MPEG2.
If you already used up a trial period, you can either 1) install one of three apps I mentioned earlier that you haven't installed before and activate it as a trial or 2) purchase a subscription for Creative Cloud. #1 option allows you to use MPEG2 30 more days. With #2 option, you can use MPEG2 as long as you keep your subscription active. I hope this helps.

Adobe Media Encoder Error with MPEG2 Formats [../../src/Command.cpp-2519]

I am trying to use some of my presets using MPEG2 format and it is giving me this error: [/Volumes/BuildDisk/builds/ame602_mac/main/app/frontend/prj/mac/../../src/Command.cpp-251 9]. I try the system presets that use MPEG2 and I get the same error. I notice if I try to make a new preset, I do not even have the option to choose MPEG2. I only get MPEG4 or MPEG4 (Legacy). I am using AME 7.0.2; if anyone has an idea on why I can't use MPEG2 please let me know.

IMovie 09 has trouble importing large video files from my JVC HD-40. I am trying to edit files such as these in 09. What should I do? Would buying iMovie 2011 help? I am shooting AVCHD files instead of the other mpeg2 file format.

I am new into the Apple Community. I have a camcorder known as the JVC GZ-HD40 US and I currently am trying to use iMovie 2009 to edit my movies. With my camcorder, I have the choice to use two different video formats: AVCHD or Mpeg2. All my videos are shot in the AVCHD (HD) file format. This camcorder also has a 120 G Hard Drive built into it. When I plug in the camcorder through USB to my MacPro, the Hard Drive of the camcorder shows up as a icon on the desktop. Many of my video clips are at least thirty minutes in length, inside the camcorder. When I try to import in iMovie my video files, it only imports around ten minutes of the video and skips to the end of the clip. I would greatly prefer to use my MacPro desktop to edit movies instead of my Windows 7 computer which seems to work fine. Is there a solution to this problem? Would the new iMovie 2011 application solve this problem? I also have the Final Cut Express to work with, and also, can't get it to work. What should I try doing?

I have the exact same problem. I've just been to Thailand with my girlfriend, and we recorded a lot of stuff with my brand new Sony HD camcorder. And whenever the we ran out of camcorder memory we just emptied everything onto my HP laptop using the supplied Sony software, which produced m2ts files. When we got home, I realized that my Mac Pro/iMovie09 was not able to import this format. What a huge disappointment! Especially considering the fact that I just bought my mac back in March (my first mac ever) only for video editing and music composing (no problems with music composing, however!).
Well, I needed a solution, so last week I just bought the Voltaic HD converting software (35$), and it works great. No problems. Only thing is that my Mac Pro (quad intel core) had to work 24 hours a day for four straight days/nights in order to finish the converting job - resulting in 434 GB worth of mov-files. This is no problem as such, and the quality is great. BUT it seems rather stupid that this converting has to take place. If I use Sony Vegas on my PC, it works out of the box with my original m2ts-files. And I would really appreciate if Apple would implement a simple import function of m2ts-files in their software - one that would (if necessary) automatically convert the files to mov. Or even better: would work natively with the m2ts-files.

MPEG2 codec not working in Final Cut Pro on Mac OSX Tiger

We have been using the File-export-Quicktime Conversion-MPEG2 codec for exporting of files from Final Cut Pro to DVD Studio Pro. On the new mac system that was just bought, the option does not show up.
Currently the system is running Quicktime Pro 7.1.2/ FCP 5 and DVD Studio Pro 4 and it is a new mac system running Mac OSX Tiger.
This problem has happened before on a mac running on an older system, but that was solved by reinstalling FCP and then DVD Studio pro and making sure that the QT Pro was of the latest version.
Right now, we have reinstalled everything the same way, tried installing DVD Studio Pro after, we have also done a full software update of the software over the net.
The codec is still not working, all the macs in the office are supposed to be upgraded to Mac osx tiger, but right now we can't do so, cos then we wouldn't be able to burn any DVDs.

The installation of QT 7 is the culprit behind the missing MPEG-2 Export Component. But during upgrades, it doesn't always get rid of the file ... probably what happened on your older system when you upgraded to QT 7 or Tiger. Either the new system came with QT 7 preinstalled, therefore not including the Export Component, or if it was upgraded, the upgrade missed it.

Mpeg2 blueray gives me better quality that H.264 blueray

When I use the set prests for H.264 - blueray that CS5 has in the media encoder the quality looks a little poor? But when I use the Mpeg2 -blueray option this gives me a quality identical to the orginal HDV footage. Everywhere I've read people say that H.264 is a better format. I made no changes to any settings in the media encoder. And that was my result. Does anyone see what I see?
When I created the Blueray in enocre I made one small clip in H.264 and one in Mpeg2. Mpeg2 was night and day better. The H.264 files looked bleary when motion was faster in the video. When the image was near static or stationary the image from h.264 was clear. When I watched the mpeg2 file on the blueray it stayed sharp and clear the entire time identicle to the orginal HDV footage. To give you an idea I have Dish Network HDTV and they use mpeg4 wich is I'm guessing from what I've read is H.264. I get the same thing on there. If the image is still not alot of motion clearity is very sharp and HDTV looking, but when a lot of motion is involved the quality is a little bleary, not blurry (bleary which in my definition is between clear and blurry.).
I've learned that the h.264 makes a smaller file than mpeg. But it appears if I change the bitrate setting on mpeg2, and take the bitrate down a hair from the defaults I should be able to get a 2 hour video or near 2hr video to fit on a blueray and at the quality I want.
Anyone with some advice or know what I'm talking about? I'm new to the HD world I've just upgraded to Production Premium CS5 from Pro 1.5 and Encore 1.5. So video formats and the settings for these and the way premiere exports is way, way different than I'm used to. Any help would be appriciated.
I would like to know which formats are best and what setting I should use to get the best picture, It appears that I've found it with mpeg2 blueray but would like input from someone.

I'm not sure about the format of the commercial Blu-Rays but I'm defenetely using MPEG-2 for mine as similar to your observations this gives me the closest image to the original files using the highest possible sampling PrP allows - 40mps.
My cat-polot's helmet is easy to make - use few limes for the helmet and the juce goes into your gin-tonnic.

MPEG2 Export failed

Hi all,
i´m running in problems generating MPEG2 (m2v) with compressor.
That´s what i´m usually doing (worked 100 times before, last time 28.03.2008):
I´m rendering out a video MJPEG A PAL from AfterEffects.
Then I´m using a Compressor Droplet to generate a approval Version for my clients (QT Sor3 halfres) and a MPEG2 file as final delivery.
But now the MPEG2 Export fails. Find the error report at the end of this thread.
I tried it with the last files when it worked, also failed.
I tried another MPEG2 Preset (the apple ones) -> failed.
Playing MPEG2 Files using QT-Player and VLC works fine.
Any help highly appreciated.

The source frame rate is 23.976, so I guess I would go with 24p. My intention is to upload the file to a streaming video website. They have their specs laid out for me, I just happen to be new to all of this so I am having a tough time meeting them.
My question right now is, if i have selected the MXF OP1a XDCAM option with XDCAM 50 NTSC (4:2:2) video codec, will the export be in mpeg2 and what will my bit rate be? I have no way of viewing the bit rate with this configuration.

How can I export an mpeg2 with 4:2:2 chroma?

I've done a lot of searching on this and learned a little bit but can't figure out what I'm missing. I need to supply a company with a movie to very specific mpeg2 specs. I've got all of the settings right except the file is rendering out with 4:2:0 sampling and it needs to be 4:2:2. There isn't any sort of option for this in my Export Settings (using CS4). Am I missing something obvious? Or does this depend on the source material and it's something I can't change?

My client gives me the mpeg 2 source for dvd authoring.
he requires subtitle.
how do i burn timecodes in mpeg2 files for subtitling.
one way is we can directly type the subtitles in dvdsp.
but Is there any easiest way to burn timecoding in mpeg2 files,
with the minimal usage of time for exporting to mpg or Mpeg 1
so that my subtitle person can work individually

Error code -2048 while opening a MPEG2 file

Probably a straigth forward question.
I have captured some HI8 video in various MPEG formats using a Pinnacle Movie Studio Box with Windows. I can import MPEG1 file to my new IMAC G5 however while trying to open a MPEG2 file (which open with RealPlayer on Windows) I get the Quick Time "error -2048 : the file is not a movie file".
Do I need to install QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component?

Don't waste your time! I installed the MPEG-2 Component and now Quicktime will "play" the movie but freezes after the first frame. The audio plays; the video just sits there.
This forum is full of people with the same issue, which Apple has not addressed.
It freezes despite having the Pro version, and the latest system and Quicktime.
If you find a solution, let us all know!
The MPEG-2 Playback Component is required.
To further edit the files (and retain the audio)
you'll need additional software.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can convert your MPEG-2 file
to DV Stream that can then be edited in iMovie (and
any other DV editing software).

MPEG2 broken when upgrading to 7.0.2

Hello all,
I upgraded to QT7.0.2 and afterward OSX can not recognize ANY MPEG2 file. The file shows up in finder but there is no QT icon. In fact, if I try to open one up it crashes my finder. I am running Panther 10.3.9 - G5 Dual 2.0 - 2.5Gig RAM - Final cut studio - Compressor 2.
Any help would be great.

I've not had a problem with MPEG2 playback but .AVI playback using Xvid video and AC3 audio codecs. This too would appear to be down to the iTunes 5/Quicktime 702 upgrade as nothing changed apart from this and I had just finished watching a movie then upgraded and then it didn't work.
After an hour on the phone to Apple an archive restore was recommended. I chose not to take that advice.
Would Apple admit that there's a problem with the OS X upgrade as they have with the x86 version for the PC?
Will we be expecting a new version?

Quicktime mpeg2 plug in

I have an imac 24 and snow leopard is installed, on aplles web site it has a plug-in that allow mpeg2 to be played on quicktime, downloaded it and for a while it worked great. now it will play the mpeg2 but I have not sound. I have video but the volume slider is gone, any other format that is made to play on quicktime normally, plays with sound, but mpeg2 with this plug in will play the video, but no sound any help with this would be great, since this is not a apple product no support is available even though it is on aplle's website and I had to pay apple for it.

If you are referring to the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component ($19.99), then it is an Apple product. It is a video codec only and does not support all forms of "muxed" audio possibilities. There are three like possibilities here:
1) Your movie may contain an unsupported audio format along with the MPEG-2 video,
2) You may have failed to update/install the latest version compatible with your OS, or
3) When you upgraded to Snow Leopard, you may have neglected to install the older, 32-bit version of QT 7.
Therefore, to try and determine where your particular problem lies, please determine:
1) What is audio format and file container type for your problem movie?
2) Do you have the QT 7.6 compatible component installed?
3) Is QT v7.6.3 also installed on your system?

[SONY HDR-SR8E] no audio in imported SD files (MPEG2/AC3)

Our office just bought a new HDR-SR8E, and i need help so that SD (MPEG2) files shot with it can be edited, but apparently we couldn't get any audio from them. I know it's because iMovie doesn't support AC3 5.1 and it's not actually MPEG2 imported but rather gets transcoded on the fly.
We tested this on 2 computers, a G5 and MacBook Pro, both outputs no audio, only G5 has Perian installed (i can't get my hand on MBP again to see if it has Perian installed or not, belongs to co-worker), used iMovie HD 6 in G5 and iMovie 08 in MBP. We will use it in iMovie 08 & Intel-based Macs.
So my questions are:
- Is there anyone with the same camera succeeded in importing it?
- If there must be a workaround, what is it?
- If we must convert the files to DV or other format first, what's the fastest and easier way to achieve this (automated/scripted is even better)? Using MPEG Streamclip i presume? or is there any better software to do it?

The files got transferred as is from the camera HDD, so quicktime player saw it as muxed MPEG2, no audio channel.
This seems to indicate the transfer was performed at the "Finder" level and not via the iMovie '08 "Import from Camera" module. Since QT is not "natively" compatible with "muxed" content or AC3 audio at all -- there would be no audio during playback. Don't believe a separate MPEG-2 component is required here but I could be wrong. (Hard to tell any more which were installed by what applications and many MPEG-2 components no longer seem to function/be compatible with Leopared-- e.g., the MPEG-2 Export component in particular.) In any case, have assumed the conversion modules are actually built into the latest round of "editor" applications (either that or "borrow" routines already built into the Apple DVD Player to handle MPEG-2 and AC3) since the QT "structure" itself does not contain an MPEG-2 (or AC3 for that matter) "engine."
I kinda forgot that i posted this in iMovie 08 forum, but i think we need to have to be able to work with these files in iMovie 06. That's impossible without any 3rd party software huh?
From my point of view the use of third-party software provides the best work flow that assures the goals you specify -- i.e., producing an iMovie '06 compatible file with a "balanced" stereo "downmix" of 5.1 AC3.
Someone swore he can record in stereo instead 5.1 using HDR-SR8E, but failed to find the setting. I kinda hoped he was right.
It would seem to be a logical setting to be included but, I would have to agree that I sometimes find Sony's penchant to "hide" or duplicate access to certain "soft-switches" difficult to fathom. Unfortunately, I have never used (or even seen) one of these models and so would be of little or no help here. And, I am reasonably sure no such "setting" is included in iMovie '08.

Not from within iMovie '06 itself. Would personally copy files from the camcorder to one of my hard drives and then use MPEG Streamclip (with $20 MPEG-2 Playback component installed). This gives me the default option of down mixing the AC3 5.1 to stereo or extracting a pair of selected audio channels or even simply demuxing the AC3 for later conversion to 6 channels of AIFF audio if I plan to create an H.264/AAC 5.1 core audio compatible file. In any case, the downmixed audio can then be output along with the video in your choice of iMovie '06 outputs -- normally either DV or AIC/AIFF (Linear PCM).
While some argue this defeats the purpose of purchasing iMovie '08 in the first place, I find manual conversion maximizes work flow possibilities with regard to iMovie '06, iMovie '08, or FCE editing; gives greater latitude in selecting an editing compression format in terms of quality and file size compromises; provides complete control over audio channelization; and even allows me to perform preliminary cuts to the content and avoid the unnecessary processing of unwanted material later. Unfortunately, having so many options seems to be rather daunting for many users. In any case, try using iSquint (free) to convert a sample file to MPEG4/AAC (you may want to use custom settings to improve quality) and import it to iMovie '06 as a test. If it does what you want and quality is acceptable, you can either use it or one of the other available third-party, MPEG-based converters to optimize you editing work flow.
