MPEG2 Muxed - No Audio

I just bought a Sony Handycam DCR-SR80 Hard Drive based camera. The file format it records in is MPEG2 Muxed. Now, everything is fine when you record it and play it back in every app besides quicktime, imovie, itunes. Obviously everything is centered around quicktime. My question is, after laying down 800 dollars for this camera, will quicktime and all my other apps support this camera without me having to use other apps to convert the files? Is there a way I can get imovie alone to work? Thanks

Question: since hard drive based camcorders seem to be the future, anyone have any insight as to whether and when Apple will upgrade its apps (QT, iMovie, Final Cut Express, etc) to integrate the new technology? Is there any way to import audio with my MPEG2 files into iMovie/iDVD or Final Cut Express? This is probably a "not gonna happen" type thing. Basically, there are two forces working against it.
This first is the fact that the MPEG-2 format is, to be frank, somewhat old and not worth the time and trouble when newer, more efficient formats like MPEG-4/AVC (H.264) are available for handling HD content at MPEG-2 data rates.
The second is the difference in technology involved. Basically, audio and video content can be synchronized either in terms of time or space. QT employs "temporal" relationships for its "frame-to-frame" synchronization strategy while both "muxed" and interleafed files employ "spatial" relationships. For instance, MPEG-1/MPEG-2 audio/video data is stored in alternating "blocks" of autio and video data in a single stream or track. As such, it remains synchronized because one form of data cannot physically "overrun" or "outrun" the other. AVI, while assigning audio and video data to separate streams, are physically interleaved in order to maintain synchronization. (Think of this as two separate tracks with "meshed cogs" which force the relative speed of one track to remain constant in comparison to the other. Lastly, you have QT synchronization which is based on an arbitrary unit of time which is used as a "frame of reference" for synchronization. This approach offers both advantages and disadvantages. For instance, QT technology does not require that every audio or video frame of data be played. This means the QT structure can have a wider range of platform CPU power requirements with older, less CPU intensive formats. (I.e., an older platform simply drops more and more frames during playback until the structure finally decides it can no longer keep up.) On the other hand, any reliance on a time reference means the playback software is very sensative to loss or absence of timing reference data. (Ever wonder about those "timecode breaks" and why part of an MPEG2 file appears to be missing or why a QT file won't load a file when it can't find a proper file termination?)
I guess you might simply say that Apple is betting that time reference based file formats will dominate the future of multimedia and they are less than williing to support what they consider outmoded and/or hybrid technologies. (Consider how long took for public opinion to get Apple to even support "muxed" MPEG-2 video with an add-on component.)

  • Since 10.6.3 - Quicktime: MPEG2 muxed without audio

    as subject...
since 10.6.3 Update, I have no audio on MPEG2 muxed video, what was fine before as well as on my 10.6.2 backup.
I dont know if this is wanted or a bug, or depends on my config.
I did only the update and have no 3rd party codecs installed.

This does not work, and it worked before the 10.6.3 update:
As you note, program stream MPEG2/MP2 files are compatible and should play under under OS 10.6.3 for you the same as they do (as indicated above) for me. Since certain components (most notably the QT MPEG-2 Playback and Perian) became "disconnected" for some people originally upgrading to Snow Leopard, you might try re-installing the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component even if it is plainly visible in the appropriate folder and see if this makes any difference or you get a message saying a newer component is already installed. I.e., if you observed the upgrade process, did you note any mention of the installation of new components. I did, but am not sure if this referred to the installation of new/updated QT media components or not. Just thought I would mention it in case the upgrade process was interrupted and might be the source of your problem. (Just throwing out guesses here as I have nothing concrete to offer as to why my system continues to work properly but yours doesn't.)

  • Multiplex a mpeg2 video and audio stream recorded via a satellite receiver

I would like to know if upgrading to QuickTime pro and/or adding the QuickTime MPEG2 add-on would allow me to multiplex a mpeg2 video and audio stream recorded via a European satellite receiver (like the Aston Xena 1800 HDU) in order to make movies that can later on be converted to be viewed on my iPod.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

No. The MPEG-2 component is to play MPEG-2 not encode it.
Use Toast. I assume you have separate audio and video transport streams, if they are named identically (1.m2v and 1.m2a) Toast will detect that and multiplex into a new MPEG-2. If not , add the video stream to Toast, which will ask for an audio stream to go with it. Either way it makes an MPEG-2 anew.
Of course you cannot use MPEG-2 in iPod so rip that DVD (Toast can make just an image and you can mount that) to get the VOB file, then use MPEG Streamclip or iSquint to convert the muxed MPEG-2 file to MP4 suitable for iPod.
Note I am very curious - are you sure this device delivers separate audio and video streams? Not a proper muxed MPEG-2 file? If the latter then just MPEG Streamclip or iSquint will do.

  • Import MPEG2 Muxed from external hard drive

    Hi there,
I am interested in the trick for iMovie 08.. I've updated from iMovie 05 HD and ready to import existing MPEG's from an external hard drive.
    They are: MPEG2 Muxed
How do I trick iMovie to recognize and import these files?
    Thanks
    Deb

With a USB flash memory drive, or an external hard drive, create on it a folder named MP_ROOT, inside it create a folder named 101PNV01, now put your mpg-2 files in this folder. Have iMovie open; after creating these files and putting the mpeg2's on it, disconnect the drive from your computer, now, when you re-connect, is like connecting a camera, and with iMovie open already, it will tell you that you have connected a camera etc, etc, now import into iMovie 08.
I use this to import mpeg 2's.
Remember to create this at the root level, at the very highest level in your external hard drive or USB. I do not use a USB stick because my files are very large, I use a external hard drive, so if one does not work for you, try the other one, if you have both.

  • Purchased Quicktime MPEG2. No audio.

I've just purchased Quicktime MPEG2 playback component for my Mac OS X, and downloaded MPEG Streamclip, and I'm getting no audio from the DVD I imported into imovie. What do I do now?

I've just purchased Quicktime MPEG2 playback component for my Mac OS X, and downloaded MPEG Streamclip, and I'm getting no audio from the DVD I imported into imovie. What do I do now?
What content are you trying to play in which application on what operating system? "Muxed" MPEG-2 content imported to iMovie for instance, should now be a MOV file containing all I-frame MPEG-2 video with AC3 audio converted to linear PCM. This file should play in almost any player on the importing system assuming the playing application/system is not muted. On the other hand, "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 or MPEG-2/PCM content is not normally supported natively by QT (except by Lion and then only in a supported file container) since the MPEG-2 Playback component is a video only codec. MPEG Streamclip should be able to play/demux/convert "muxed" MPEG-2 content and if it doesn't then you may be looking at a more serious or complex problem and will have to provide more information and/or a sample of the problem content for examination/playback comparison on other systems/system configurations.

  • MPEG1 Muxed - MISSING AUDIO FILES

I have a few QT clips that are MPEG1 Muxed. When I import into FCP all I get is the video file and not the audio file. Is there a way obtaining the audio files from a Muxed clip?

Rather than demuxing with MPEG Streamclip , this demuxing advice which is tirelessly offered to many who then have no idea what to do with separate video and audio stream files, use MPEG Streamclip to export the MPEG-1 to DV and let it do the work for you in one pass. It can export to all QT formats and DV and you get the video and audio in a ready to use file. Better no?
Keep in mind MPEG-1 which is typically 352X240 at <30 fps will suffer a lot quality-wise when upsampled to 720X480 at 30 fps. There is not much data there to work with.

  • Converting MPEG2 Muxed back to Dv

I'm working on a video project, and the person doing the filming keeps sending me muxed mpeg2 video. I've had it professionally converted to DV, but was wondering if there is a way to do it in Final Cut Studio, or if there was some freeware that would also do the trick.

    Shawn
you're absolutely right. however, transfering broadcast files using high bitrate MPEG compression as an intermediate codec is quite common. the real issue is whether you intend to recompress to a lossy codec later ...
.. that said, we have received high bitrate MPEG's which were transcoded to DVCPRO50 using MPEG Streamclip, dubbed to DigiBeta and later digitised, compressed and broadcast from our MPEG servers ... i'd challenge anyone to tell which spots have been through that loop.

  • MPEG2- DVD missing audio

I recently exported a project in MPEG2-DVD and played it from my desktop before burning to a disc.  There is no audio in the export.  What did I do wrong, and how do I best export this 52 minute project to disc keeping HD resolution and audio?  Is there a better codec to use?

    Stan,
Thanks for your advice - I tried exporting the file with H.264 as you suggested and it worked perfectly.
The next problem was trying to download the 8GB file onto a flashdrive  which gave me error messages of not being able to handle a file of that size.  Research on he web and I figured out how to reformat the drive from fat32 to ntsl.
Again, thanks for the help.  I'm going to revisit Lynda.com on exporting and formats!

  • AME CS6: Exporting to MPEG2 (Broadcast) losing audio

    Hello,
I've got to send a local TV station commercials with the following specs:
    MPEG2 HD
         4:2:2@HL
        1920x1080
         45Mbps
          29. 97 fps
    Audio
         MPEG or PCM audio
         2 to 8 channels
         384kbps
         48KHz
we accept and air 5.1 audio
Oddly, when I encode using the MPEG2 setting I find under the Broadcast settings, I get a silent movie. I seem to remember a workaround on this, but can't find it in my searches. I'v got Multiplexing set to MPEG2.
It may help to know that I'm using a Quicktime file exported from FCP 6.0.6 and that encoding the same file using the h264 preset results in a file that includes audio.
    Any ideas?

    Hey MM,
    Thanks for the reply,
I'm tried using HDTV 1080i  29.97 High Quality. The original QT file from FCP is at 23.97, but the station wants 29.97.
I AEM runs the encode, but I get no audio (even though the audio checkbox is checked). I get an MPG file and an XMP file, but the MPG file is dead quiet. I'm uploading the files as per your PM instructions so you'll have them to look at. In addition, here is the info on the file that gets produced (whcih as I meant to say is being uploaded).
I didn't mention this earlier, but I'm having this issue while traveling with a MacBook Pro (2.33G with 3GB SDRAM) running OS X (10.6.8) and I'm stoked by how fast AME encodes vs compressor. Nice to be able to use all of the processor ion this (dated box) and I'm thrilled when I'm in the office using my MacPro with 16 cores and 12GB SDRAM plus an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800. After a couple of years owning this card, you guys are actuallly using it! Sorry I waited this long to move!

  • Edited MPG (mpeg2) Clips lose Audio - Premiere Elements 8

I have 2 mpg files recorded off a TV.  When I bring them into Elements 8.0 I can play them back and the audio is fine.  However, after I edit them for length the audio disappears.  It looks like somehow when the video is edited for length that the audio track is deleted.  I am editing in Scene mode.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Steve,
Thanks for the quick reply to my question.  I have a HAVA (like a slingbox) that records directly to hard disk from the cable box.  It creates DVD quality MPGs.  I have previously been using Pinnacle Studio to make my DVDs, but wanted to try Premiere Elements.  When I bring the clips into to Premiere, I can play them just fine.  I normally clip off the first 1-2 minutes of  commercial items and the last several minutes before actually burning the DVD.  This is where the problem comes.  Once I trim the video clip, it no longer has any audio - even though the video is fine.  Just as a test, I fired up my old Pinnacle Studio and brought these 2 mpgs into it.  I was able to easily trim the video clips and burn a DVD - with audio.
Since I am new to Premiere, I assume it is just something I am doing wrong in the trimming process.  I went through the tutorial online and think I followed it OK.

  • Quicktime MPEG2 Plugin - no audio playing VOB

I would really, really apreciate any help.
I have the latest MAC X on a macbook pro and minimac 1.86, both running latest version of QT7, not Pro. I installed the MPG2 plugin. I get video but no audio with VOB files. I was having the same problem with VLC on both machines, but I fix it changing the audio device from 0 to 1 on the preferences.
How can I get the QT to play it with audio?
I just want to play my ripped DVDs using the front row.
    TKS a lot

QT Player can play only M1A a.k.a. MP2 audio in
    MPEGs.
MPEG Streamclip can play also AC3 and PCM audio -- it
can also convert them to M1A audio that QT Player can
    understand.
Thank you, it is very helpful information, because at least Streamclip is universal binary! But... it is not an absolute solution, because Streamclip is a converter - so it converts video, so it takes a lot of processor time...
If it is just a QuickTime extension...
    However - Thanks!

  • MPEG2 Muxed, 480 x 360        @ 25 fps

    Hi There,
I have some video that looks, and sounds OK on my computer, but when I burn it to iDVD, or Toast 7.
I either get no sound, or herky jerky video. (DVD)
The lack of sound I have a handle on, but for the jerky video, I can use some help..
    It's an MPEG Movie..
I'm sure that it has to do with the 25 Frames per second frame rate.. Correct?
Anyway, any help would be Great,
    Thanks,

.. hmm, as you read in the first link, Sue posted, the mentioned tool MpegStreamclip does some marvel in conversion...
    but...
mpegs are for playback only, a socalled delivery format.. not meant for further processing. so, you will ALLWAYS recognize a loss in pic quality...
to mention that, there's a new kid on the block, VisualHub (<<click on, 23.32$), which does not rely on the Quicktime technology/uses some own algorithms, and people report "aaaahhhs&oooohs" concerning quality... in my other, German forum, the video specialist gave it a 6 stars of 5

I want to connect my laptop to my tv so I can watch television with my friends. The visuals are great but the audio doesn't work at all.
I tried a male to male stereo cable as well as an rca cable for audio and neither have worked. TV and laptop audio have been at max but I hear nothing.

I have read that article and I thought it ment that the sound will work after you convert to the MPEG4 format, which I did.
