Mpeg2 video editing

Whenever I make changes to the motion of an mpeg2 clip I downloaded from youtube it is impossible to edit because I must render it after every change due to the video being distorted until I render it.  Its hard for me to explain so here's a picture.
The "video" in the browser is a correct aspect ratio for the video, the "video" in the Canvas from the sequence is what happens anytime I try to crop, move, transform or do anything to it.  How can I get it to just stay within the correct aspect ratio so I can get a correct crop without having to guess, then render, then guess, and render forever.
Thanks, let me know if you you need anymore informaiton,
Nic

First, MPEG-2 is not a supported native editing codec for FCP.  Convert it to ProRes 422 first, and you're rendering problems disappear.
In User Preferences, there's a setting that let's you configure it so FCP asks you what to do when you drop the first clip into a new Sequence.  You'll answer each time the "first" clip is dropped in by saying "Configure the Sequence Settings to match the Clip settings".  That will make sure they both match up perfectly.

  • Video Editing

    Hi all,
I am a newbie to video editing. I have some 8mm tapes and I would like to transfer the raw video to my pc for editing. My camcorder supports composite and s-video interfaces, therefore I need to invest in some kind of video transfer card and software such as adobe encore.
Another option I am considering is to rip the videos to DVD directly and then use encore to edit them. However I don't know if this is possible.
Can anyone provide any help / advise with my mini project.

You do not edit video with Encore... you edit with Premiere Pro http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_current?view=overview - current version is CS6
After editing and exporting your project to MPEG2-DVD you use Encore to author the DVD (Encore is bundled with PPro)
PPro uses Firewire to get your video from your (digital ???) 8mm tapes to computer as DV AVI
If your 8mm tapes are analog, you need a converter http://www.grassvalley.com/products/converters
When you are ready, go to the PPro forum I linked above for editing help
Be sure to read the system requirements before you buy Premiere Pro
    Adobe's MINimums http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html
This message has a really good graphic about requirements

You may also want to consider the all-in-one Premiere Elements http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere_elements
For a "mini project" think about spending about $800 for Premiere Pro -vs- about $100 for Premiere elements

  • MPEG2 Video is not smooth in Quicktime Pro Player

    I have a MBP with Core2 2.4Ghz (2GB RAM, 250GB SATA HDD).
I have a bunch of mpeg2 files downloaded from my Canon HV20 HiDef camcorder. When I play the files with Quicktime Pro with MPEG2 Component, the video looks very very jerky. The CPU usage is not too bad, all other applications behave OK.
On the other hand, if I use VLC to play the same file, the video is lot smoother. CPU usage is roughly the same.
    FYI, the video is 1080i.
Can someone suggest some solution? My problem is, I want to watch these videos from Frontrow and VLC is not a solution.
The video plays fine in Windows XP, Vista and even in Linux in any player I tried so far.
This is really killing me, any solution is appreciated. I definitely do not want to go back to Windows for my media.

Quicktime does play DVDs OK. Its not as smooth as VLC, but very acceptable.
However, my MPEG2 video files are Hi-definition files from Hi-definition camcorder. These are 1080i (1920x1080 interlaced) files.
These files play perfectly smoothly on the same Mac when I use VLC player.
When I use Quicktime player, they are very jerky. Its hard to quantify how jerky it is, but just a naked eye guess would be 2 frames out of 5 are vanishing. Sound is smooth though, no hiccups in sound.
I hope that describes my problem better.

  • How do I export a 98 min video edited in FCP 7 to IDVD for single disc DVD burning?

How do I export a 98 min video edited in FCP 7 to IDVD for single disc DVD burning?

Your current settings should match the source material in your timeline. Though, it probably doens't matter what it is as long as your settings are not for a highly compressed format like h.264 or mpeg2.
iDVD should take any all "I" frame format and encode it. (All I frame formats include DV, DVCProHD, ProRes).

  • Using MPEG2-Videos?

I have a lot of MPEG2-Videos on my Harddrive, but iMovie don't let me import them. I can import other files, but it's not possible to select an mpeg2 file.
According to die Prefernces an the manuals, iMovie should do it.
    What is wrong?
(I have the MPEG2-PlugIn installed and can Play the files in iPhoto, Quicktime etc.)

I have also tried to import two different .mpg 'flavors' (one from Stryker, one from Zeiss) with surgical videos. Neither is accepted by iMovie '08. I am extremely disappointed. Still can't edit surgical videos on my Mac, except with MPEG Streamclip, a program I find un-intuitive., and thus don't like using. I am not a video person, I am a simple minded person with videos that need editing, and Apple is letting me down.
APPLE PLEASE FIX THE MPEG2 IMPORT!!!!!!

  • Import of MPEG2 video

Quicktime has problems reading a DVD with MPEG2 videos. I managed to import only one out of three files from the DVD. It took ages. Import of the film in imovie impossible. system- freeze.OS X 7. 2  is said to be able to read MPEG2 without the Quicktime viewer. It looks as if this is not the case. A test of the DVD in Windows works well. Viewing and cutting (moviemaker) works, why not with the mac and OS X 7.2?

I've read the same information that MPEG2 playback is supposed to built-in to QuickTime X on the new Lion OS X 10.7. As for importing it however, I think you still need to convert the video to Apple Intermediate Codec before iMovie can do anything with it. iMovie doesn't import MPEG2 directly off of the DVD disks. Most often you're forced to rip the DVD using either HandBrake or purchase the MPEG2 QuickTime playback component (it's a plu-in for QuickTime) and use MPEG Streamclip to convert to .mov file encoded internally as Apple Intermediate Codec (aka AIC). AIC format is the native editing format for iMovie, and encoding directly to that format bypasses iMovie doing any extra steps to import the video.

  • HDV MPEG2 Video Playback in QuickTime - frame rate too fast!!

    Hello All,
I'm having a very strange problem which just began this past week when I upgraded to QT 7.2 (darn me, I'm a video pro, I should have known better than to do this mid-project!). I am editing a film with HDV content: 1280 x 720 pixels, MPEG2 video (.m2v file type).
I have the MPEG2 plugin for QT.
When I open the file in QT Player, it plays the video almost 2.5 times faster than the audio, increasing the frame rate to do so. For example, if I view the Movie Properties for one particular file, and compare the sound track to the video track, it will claim that that the sound track has a duration of 7:03:24, whereas the video duration has a duration of 2:49:27. When watching the video, it plays it back too fast. When I import the file into Final Cut, the same "sped up" file is viewed.
I think this is a QuickTime specific problem because I downloaded VLC Media Player (which can also open MPEG2 files) and it opened and played the same MPEG2 file perfectly and at the correct speed.
I tried uninstalling and downgrading to QT 7.1.6 (and then re-installed OS 10.4.10) - but the problem still exists. So there must be something else that was installed in this QT update that I haven't been able to figure out that is causing this very weird problem.
I'm at a standstill with my FCP project because all the files it refers to in my sequences use the same QT engine - so all my video files are playing back too fast. Yikes!
Please can anyone help me or provide any insight, I'm happy to try anything or post more info.
    Thank you,
    Catherine
P.S. I'm going to post a similar thread over with the FCP folks to see if they have heard of any similar problems.

Sorry to dig up an old post, but I am having the same problem. Does anybody know a solution, it seems to occur on all MP2 movies, HD or not.

  • Early 2011 MBP for video editing, or sell and get something better?

I want to start video editing, wont be extremely intensive just yet I guess that depends on my learning curve. Anyway I have a:
Early 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Running on OS X 10.8.4
This is my only computer and buying a newer Mac one would be one **** of a task (pricey, im a broke college kid). So my question is if I upgrade the ram and change the HDD to a SDD would that be enough to run Adobe Premeire, After Effects, maybe Final Cut Pro depending on which I like more and not feel like i have the oldest computer in the world?
I also want to have a 3 external screen setup using USB video adapters and the mini displayport when im home running in clamshell mode I believe its called? I just need some experts advice.

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll go with this config then.
I might look at another capture box that exports the video in DV since that seems like the easiest format to work with in FCE. I understand there aren't many products (Mac or PC) that edit MPEG2 files directly due to complexities in the file format? The product I was using on the PC was called TMPGEnc MPEG Editor which worked well - but I'd use this as part of a two step process - edit all the clips in this one product, and then import all the clips into a second editing suite (Nero Vision) to paste them all together, add photo shows, build the DVD menus and then burn the DVD. It was a bit painful going through the two steps, so hopefully capturing my analog content to DV and editing just once in FCE will do the job.

  • Video Editing feature in latest version of Photoshop CS6 does not exist/work. How do I fix this problem?

Hi everyone! I downloaded CS6 for a graphic design class that I was taking. I later found out that you could edit videos with the essentials portion of CS6 since it no longer has to be extended like in CS5. I went to import some videos from bridge and bridge would not allow me to do so. I also tried to open the files in Photoshop and I as I was looking at the type of files that I could open like quicktime files, wmv., mov., etc., I could not find anything relating to opening videos. The only thing that showed up were types of image files to open. Did I buy a faulty version of this program? Is there a way to get the video editing feature back on here or do I have to breakdown and buy Photoshop essentials separately?
    Thank you!

  • Considering dumping my iMac for a PC used for DSLR video editing on Premiere CS6. Help!

So I edit mostly 1080p DSLR footage taken from my canon T3i camera. I purchased a 2011 (the latest model) iMac a little over a year ago, upgraded the RAM to 12GB and it has worked reasonably well. I purchased the base model for $1200 which has a quad core i5 processor, 512mb of video ram, and a measly 500gb hard drive. The past couple of days I have come to the realization that I only use Adobe Programs for graphically intensive work (premiere, after effects, etc). I originally bought my iMac for final cut, but FCPX SUCKS and I switched to Premiere CS6 which works like a dream. Anyways, I'm a senior in high school and do lots of video editing (going to major in video production in college). I'm likely going to differ college for a year and continue my video production business (pretty informal) as well as video production internships at a couple companies (so don't suggest that I get a laptop for portability, not an issue). I just shot an entire wedding with 2 DSLR's and the footage takes up over 20% of my hard drive which is unacceptable. This is very troublesome for me and has been clogging up my computer considerably. I have realized it would make a lot of sense to sell my iMac and purchase a PC that's not only faster, but has much more space. I was ideally looking to sell my iMac for $1000, and from that get a better and faster PC setup for my video editing. $200 would be allocated for a 24" 1080p LED 5ms Asus monitor (from newegg) which would leave $800 remaining for the PC. Ideally it'd be nice to have a little cash left over. Some things that sound appealing to me are: an intel i7 quad core proccessor at least 3.0+ Ghz,  16 GB of ram (maybe 8 to start), 1 GB of video RAM (here is where I'm stuck, my Imac had a Radeon 512mb video card in it, but I've heard premiere runs especially well with nVidia CUDA cards? Don't really know too much about this stuff.) I have no idea what type of card to get, and if I would even see a performance upgrade from my iMac. For storage I'd like at least 2TB of space, should I get two seperate 1 TB drives? One for boot and software and another for video files? Anyways, I assume I can benefit from selling my 2011 i5 iMac to get a faster PC equivalent at a lower price since I mainly edit videos (which is pretty graphically intense) from an HD DSLR camera. I've noticed premiere rendering times on my mac are starting to get pretty slow these days. Ideally it'd be nice to buy a desktop (already assembled) maybe from HP for around $600 (not including the monitor). I'm not completely against building a PC from parts (since I know a friend who can do it for me) I just need help figuring out WHAT exactly it is that I need and would benefit from.

  • Need Help Building a Graphic Design/Video Editing PC

Greetings everybody, my name is David, and I'm hoping to get a little assistance building a computer system either from scratch or from a couple of computers I have picked out.
I hope this that doesn't sound unrealistic but I only have around $600 in my budget to build a Graphic Designer machine. My intentions are to get a subscription to Adobe cloud so I would have access to all of Adobe CS6 products. (I won’t be using any of the Touch or Game developers applications.)
I would like to post two links to two machines that I picked out that are in my price range and would like some advice as to whether or not either one of these machines have enough processing power to be able to handle all Adobe CS 6 products.
I am aware that neither one of these machines have a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and that I would have to purchase one and add it. Which leads me to my first question; are the processors on either one of these machines capable of handling a GPU that is on the Adobe recommended list for processors?
And secondly, if I were to build a machine from scratch, is $600 enough to build a machine that is capable of handling Adobe CS6  products? When building a machine from scratch can you tell me what the minimum requirements are for a motherboard? Or are there any sites that offer specific advise for building PC's for graphic design?
I noticed after looking through the list of recommended graphics processing units that the majority of those are very expensive, in the $500-$3000 range. Can you please recommend a graphics processing unit that is in the $200-$300 range that would be fully adequate to handle Adobe products? Also what things do I need to take into consideration when building the machine from scratch to ensure that all my hardware is capable of handling Adobe CS6 products.
What do I need to add to either one of these prebuilt computers to make them Adobe-ready, If they are in fact worthy at all?
Here are the links for two machines that I have picked out:
    http://www.costco.com/HP-Pavilion-p6t-Desktop%2c-Intel%C2%AE-Core%E2%8 4%A2-i3-2130-3.4GHz.product.100010197.html
    http://www.costco.com/ZT-Desktop%2c-Intel%C2%AE-Core%E2%84%A2-i5-3470- 3.2GHz.product.100027436.html
I do realize that neither one of these machines have a graphics card in them. Can you tell by looking at the specifications on either one of these machines, whether or not your typical graphics card would fit inside the case If they are indeed worthy in all other respects?
And I realize that I mentioned that I only had $600 to spend, however if either one of these prebuilt machines are powerful enough in all other respects, I don't have an issue waiting a month or two before buying the graphics card and installing a little bit later.
Thank you in advance for your input.
    Sincerely,
    David

Your HP Costco link results in an out of stock message
Your ZT Costco link is very likely NOT expandable due to the VERY small power supply... so you will likely NOT be able to add a video card later
For PPro video editing you want an nVidia graphics adapter http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/GPU.HTM and even the low power nVidia may be too much for that computer
Also, for video editing, you need a MINIMUM of 2 hard drives... and trying to edit HiDef video with an i5 will be a study of waiting for things to happen
As Harm said... a $600 computer will work for everything EXCEPT video editing
This DIY list is just about twice your budget, but it will work for video editing

  • New to Mac and to video editing...need some guidance, please

I've decided to make the switch and ordered a new 3Ghz 24" iMac. I chose a 1TB HD and 4G of RAM.
I want to do some photo and video editing (nothing professional, simply vacation photos and video). I'll be purchasing an HD camcorder later this year to replace my current one (non-HD). I currently have about 5000 photos and about 50 hours of unedited DV on DV tapes to begin to work with.
Any suggestions on the following would be much appreciated:
    1. Back-up: Should I use a 1GB Time Capsule or a 1 GB GTECH drive with Time Machine? I should mention that I plan on purchasing a MB or MBP later this year. Can I use a GTech HD as a NAS-like drive for both the iMac and the notebook?
    2. Should I partition the internal HD?
    3. Should I use a 'scratch disk' for video editing? If so, any suggestions for a particular size or model?
    4. Any suggestions for ease of transfer of my data from my PC (photos, iTunes library, mail, IE favorites, etc.)?
    5. Anything else you would suggest for a new Mac user?
Thanks very much for the help!!!

    Hi there.
First, a couple of websites to help you on your way (and Welcome to the Mac!)
    http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/
    And also
    http://www.apple.com/support/leopard/
Now, as for your questions, these are just IMHO:
Backup - get BOTH the capsule and a separate HD. If you can only get one, personally I would get the non-TB disk so that I can drag the video files that I want onto it. the Capsule might backup other stuff (and slowly compared to the straight drive; get a FW 800 drive if you can, if not then FW 400 at least). I also think you meant TB not GB! Just make sure the DISK is from a good vendor (Seagate, Hitachi or Western Digital).
Partition - Nope; wastes space; you need contiguous space from my experience. Only do that if you really need to run Windows via Boot Camp (not recommended to run Windows at all!)
Scratch disk is absolutely recommended. Get the largest size one you can afford and separate out this from your backup disk. (Worst case, use a bit of the scratch disk as your backup, but also keep the same work files on your main hard disk so you at least have a physical duplicate somewhere). Yup, hard disks are gonna add up!
The above websites have some tips on transferring content from PCs; generally you can just burn stuff onto DVD and import them onto the Mac. That's pretty straight forward.
Suggestions IMHO - forget the Mighty Mouse and get another quality two button mouse. Also consider a Kensington Trackball. Get AppleCare warranty for all your hardware (for peace of mind). Triple check that your camcorder will be supported by iMovie '08. It might not be by Final Cut but at least you can get the files from iMovie into Final Cut. But Final Cut does support quite a lot of them already.
Introduce 10 other Windows people to the Mac. (This is what we do).
    Cheers!

  • Dual 17'' Displays and an NTSC Monitor for Video Editing

I am trying to hook up two 17'' apple monitors and an NTSC television monitor for video editing, but all I have on the back of my G5 tower is one ADC plug and one DVI plug. Any advice on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

If you run in anything other than the LCD's native resolution your graphics card will be resampling the image. This inevitably distorts the image as pixels must be discarded to create the display. Typically this softens the image.

  • Thinking to buy a new 15inch macbook pro retina display. Aim to use it for video editing and compositing... Is ıt worth for it?

Hi... I am a freelance filmmaker. Now I have 2008 model mac pro and I am thinking to buy a new macbook pro 15 inch retina display. Do you think its worth for it? I aim to use the macbook mainly for video editing, video compositing (after effects) and photo editing. My current old mac pro has 12 GB and the graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB (Yes I still use it). My main question is, do you think its better to move to macbook pro or upgrading the old one? Making it 32 GB of RAM and buy a new NVIDIA cuda capable graphic card? I dont have enough budget to make it together... Want to hear your suggestions...

I'm not sure, I've seen pro animators use MBPs but usually with a large monitor. Especially doing video editing, compositing and editing it might make more sense to upgrade the Mac Pro to an SSD as the boot drive. What kind of CPU setup is in your Pro?

I deal exclusively with OWC. I'd call them and walk them through your system and see what they say.
What you do takes a lot of CPU, RAM, graphics and boot disk power.
I've upgraded my two computers to SSDs and the first thing I noticed was that Photoshop CS6 opens in 7 seconds vrs. 50 seconds when the application was on a HDD.
