MPEG2 when compressing from HDV

Hi
I'm new to compressor and FCP and HDV. I'm coming over from the SD Avid world of editing and have a question aboutMPEG-2. IsMPEG-2 the best when it comes to finished quality when being compressed from HD to SD??? When I play a SD dvd that has down converted HDV footage on it, it looks real bad, just very pixelated??? I'm outputting HDV 1080i60 from FCP then opening Compressor and using the setting under DVD:Best Quality 90 minutes which is MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass. I was told to use this setting from a friend of mine. Or even the DV NTSC Anamorphic setting as well.
I hope I'm doing something wrong and using the wrong setting because I can't deliver this low HDV down converted product to my client:( If there is a much better quality setting out there, I would love to know about it:)
PLEASE HELP!!
Thanks, Jonathan

Hi
First a confession: I don't work with HDV ... but I found that [Bonsai’s HDV to DVD workflow|http://www3.telus.net/bonsai/Welcome.html] have helped others before in these forums.
Hope that helps !

  • Quicktime movies compress from HD to TV Ratio when writing DVD

    I'm using version iDVD 7 (sorry...no forum for v.7 ???).
Using "ONE STEP DVD from MOVIE" feature to convert a Quicktime Movie that was created in Final Cut Express into a DVD. The item properties in FCE are letterbox 1920x1080. After writing DVD, the image on the screen is compressed to TV ratio. QUESTION #1: How do I avoid this and QUESTION #2: There's probably a better software app for making DVDs from FCE...what do you suggest? Many thanks!!!

Hello again...I have some conflicts in the information provided and the links to others therein.
Article TS1611 mentions to save in 854x480 NTSC, but there's no option to that ratio...in either HD or other formats. The other direction to use the specific compression is something that I was not doing. I was going with the default...so Article TS1611 is a hybrid solution at this point.
The second link suggestion takes me into iDVD's themes...which I do not use. I only want the player without all the graphic stuff. That's why I go to FILE>"One step DVD from Movie".
The other mention within an article suggested using a program that "amorphs" the file during stamping. This user had a file that when exported from FCE was not in the 16:9 ration. Mine are in the 16:9 ratio in HD and then in changes the ratio to 4:3 when writing the DVD within iDVD.
So all seems to be correct, then the DVD plays in TV ratio.
    Thanks again in advance!

  • How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Compression errors: HDV to HDV/DV (green square dots)

    - Compression errors: HDV to HDV or HDV to DV (green square dots) -
I'm having compression errors when trying to export HDV Projects using
    - FCP Export Quicktime movie
    - FCP Using QT Conversion
    - Compressor
For example today I tried to export 1,5 hour HDV Project (edit version) to master HDV clip. I used FCP Export QT Movie and the new master clip has 19 compression errors. Most of them were during first 30 minutes.
    See the picture from: http://www.aavekammari.com/comperr.html
Errors are mostly green dots lines, but they can also be other coloured dots or just small squares.
I have tried to remove extra RAMs, using only Apple's original RAMs, tested RAMs with couple of softwares. I read somewhere else that the RAM could be the issue.
Does anyone else having this kind of problem?
Final Cut Studio with all latest updates (FCP 5.1.2) / Quicktime 7.1.3
    G5 dp2.5/2.5GB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    http://www.aavekammari.com/comperr.html
It seems that errors can appear even when rendering in FCP (second picture in the link above).
    I did some research.
    - when I tried to export QT file: In 1,5 hour project all errors were during first 50 minutes.
    - when I forced FCP to render all clips (CC added): All errors were again during first 50 minutes!
So I found that all media files in first 50 minutes are in the same internal HD (not same where the FCP is). And the rest of them are in external firewire HD. Could this be reason, but why, anyone?

  • Mac Pro restarts when waking from sleep

    Hi everyone.
I just got a brand new Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz), and had Apple upgrade the RAM to 2GB (4 x 512MB). My first problem is that the computer always restarts when waking from sleep, which is annoying! I have reset the SMC by unplugging the machine for a minite, but the problem persists. I have also tried sleeping the computer with nothing plugged in except the monitor and keyboard/mouse, but I get the same problem. All software/firmware is fully up to date.
I have also just noticed that the System Profiler states that there is only 1GB RAM in the computer, even though I am sure that it recognised 2GB when I got the machine a fortnight ago (I even have a screen shot of 'about this mac' to prove it!). Can anybody help, or do I need to phone Apple support?
    Thanks,

  • "media server application expectly quit" when submitting from final cut pro

browsing through the list, it seems the problem couldn´t be solved so far.
doing some systematic testing, the following riddle shows up:
... when adding a QT ref movie (or movie) directly to the compressor batch list and submit to the cluster, everything runs fine.
... when exporting from final cut pro:
    menu -> export -> using compressor ...
    submitting in compressor using:
    1) Cluster: this computer: everything keeps running fine.
    2) Cluster: MylovelyCluster ....
the job fails with the message "Failed: HOST [clusternode_name.local] media server application unexpectedly quit"
since there is 5TB + of data to be compressed, copying files to the render nodes is not an option. all data is on a shared xraid, connected via giganet.
Any ideas, any hints appreciated !
    regards,
p.s. Anybody running an XSAN having the same issues?
    G5s, G4s, G3s, macminis, powerbooks   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   xraid

... well, the answer is in other topics.
showstopper explains it patently again and again ...
    thanks from here.
shortly: when submitting from FCP, every node HAS to have FCP installed and MUST have access to the same relative file path (mounted shared volume). If the volume is not present, the render node will open the reconnect media dialogue and waits for user input.

  • Large PDF file sizes when exporting from InDesign

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew why some PDF file sizes are so large when exporting from ID.
I create black and white user manuals with ID CS3. We post these online, so I try to get the file size down as much as possible.
There is only one .psd image in each manual. The content does not have any photographs, just Illustrator .eps diagrams and line drawings. I am trying to figure out why some PDF file sizes are so large.
Also, why the file sizes are so different.
For example, I have one ID document that is 3MB.
Exporting it at the smallest file size, the PDF file comes out at 2MB.
Then I have another ID document that is 10MB.
Exporting to PDF is 2MB (the same size as the smaller ID document)... this one has many more .eps's in it and a lot more pages.
Then I have another one that the ID size is 8MB and the PDF is 6MBwhy is this one so much larger than the 10MB ID document?
Any ideas on why this is happening and/or how I can reduce the file size.
I've tried adjusting the export compression and other settings but that didn't work.
I also tried to reduce them after the fact in Acrobat to see what would happen, but it doesn't reduce it all that much.
    Thanks for any help,
    Cathy

    > Though, the sizes of the .eps's are only about 100K to 200K in size and they are linked, not embedded.
But they're embedded in the PDF.
    > It's just strange though because our marketing department as an 80 page full color catalog that, when exported it is only 5MB. Their ID document uses many very large .tif files. So, I am leaning toward it being an .eps/.ai issue??
Issue implies there's something wrong, but I think this is just the way
    it's supposed to work.
Line drawings, while usually fairly compact, cannot be lossy compressed.
The marketing department, though, may compress their very large TIFF
files as much as they like (with a corresponding loss of quality). It's
entirely possible to compress bitmaps to a smaller size than the
drawings those bitmaps were made from. You could test this yourself.
Just open a few of your EPS drawings in Photoshop, save as TIFF, place
in ID, and try various downsampling schemes. If you downsample enough,
you'll get the size of the PDF below a PDF that uses the same graphics
as line drawing EPS files. But you may have to downsample them beyond
    recognition...

  • When converting from a .wav to a .mov is there a loss of audio quality when using QuickTime?

When converting from a .wav to a .mov is there a loss of audio quality when using QuickTime?

When converting from a .wav to a .mov is there a loss of audio quality when using QuickTime?
That would depend on your work flow. MOV is the generic QuickTime file container and is not related to any particular data compression format. If you perform a simple "Save" or "Save As..." action that merely copies the data in the WAV file to an MOV file, then the data remains unchanged and maintains its original quality. If, on the other hand, your transcode/re-compress the original data to a different compression format, then there is always the potential for some loss in quality. Depending on the codec and/or settings, the potential loss could be inaudible to severe.

  • Saturation Loss When Exporting from Lightroom.

This happens to me when exporting from Lightroom 2 or 3. It happens regardless of the color profile, file format, bit depth, image size, compression, or the method of export. I regularly profile my one-year-old iMac monitor with an Eye One Display 2. My working color space for Photoshop CS4 is ProPhoto. After exporting, I am viewing the images in Photoshop, Safari, Firefox and Apple Preview, with the same result. I have used pretty much all the available export methods in Lightroom, including exporting with Lighroom ad-ons such as SlideshowPro. And, conversely, if I edit an image to my liking ourside of Lightroom, there is a saturation increase when I import it into Lightroom.  The effect tends to be most obvious and bothersome with shots taken outside on sunny days, with lots of blues and greens.  I am shooting raw files with a Canon 5d II and I use the Adobe Standard profile in Lightroom.
There is a section at the back of Martin Evening's Lightroom book where he talks about the Lightroom color space and Lightroom versus Photoshop curves, which seems to relate to what I am seeing, but I have the feeling that what I seeing is more pronounced than what he is talking about there.  It is a real dullng of the look, not merely a slight difference in how the colors are rendered.

Looks like Lightroom doesn't like your display profile.
Try removing the profile (don't know how to do it on a Mac) to leave your display uncalibrated. Are the colors still different in Lightroom and Photoshop?

  • QT Player 7.0.2 crashes when encoding from MJPEG into H.264

Another interesting thing about QT 7.0.2 (first one was 10GB bug, check my earlier thread here) - it crashes when the user switches to another account and back while the QT Player encodes MJPEG video into H.264. How to reproduce this bug, step by step:
    1) open any MJPEG video in QT Player 7.0.2, could be in MOV or in AVI, doesn't make difference which
    2) do File->Export
    3) choose "Movie to QuickTime Movie" in the "Export" drop-down menu
    4) in the "Save exported file as" dialog go to Options->Video->Settings and set H.264 as your output video codec, encoding settings don't make a difference as well
    5) close "Movie settings" dialog, then click "Save" in "Save exported file as" dialog
    6) QT Player starts encoding your MJPEG video into H.264 video, the small "Progress" window appears with a progress bar inside
    7) now switch to another user account using Fast User Switching feature of Windows XP
    8) switch back to the account where QT Player was encoding your MJPEG video
    9) observe the crash window - your QT Player has joined his ancestors now
Can anyone reproduce this? If yes, please post your crash dump here, so that I can send another bugreport to Apple (10GB bugreport is in the works now, almost done
If you follow all the steps above and your QT Player does NOT crash, please post the details about your system. My setup is QT Player Pro 7.0.2 and Windows XP Pro SP2. Also post the details about your MJPEG file - the codec you used to encode it (mine two codecs were Pegasus PicVideo 3 and Apple Motion JPEG A), and the resolution (mine was 720x480).

when i said i couldn't do audio and video at the same time i meant that i cannot edit and process video and at the same time record or edit ADR, sound effects. i have an audio engineer in the audio room working on the audio while i work on the video. is that clear?
Yeah, now it sounds reasonable. You possibly could do that on a single computer using X Windows or Windows Terminal Server but it's totally different topic.
as for fast user switching...here's a comment from another forum... "just don't use fast user switching, it isn't implemented well and it breaks some programs"
"Don't use Windows, it isn't implemented well and doesn't run some poorly written MS-DOS games"
I found several others in that regard, but you know more about it so i don't need to post links, right? plus a lot of them dealt with quicktime, but again you are the expert.
If you found anything that's related to QuickTime crashes during account switching, you're welcome to post this concrete info here, it'll help with my bugreport.
and since you make the inference that i have a cheap system operating on ms-dos which is laughable because that means that you can't read.
I said that when I read about single-task computers this reminds me about MS-DOS times, but now it looks like it is not about your case, since you have two people working in parallel on two machines.
i looked up on Yahoo! the terms "mjpeg"+"crashes" and got 16,800 hits. plus i do recall on another forum someone was having problems with mjpeg and the responder said it wasn't a good codec to work with...
So what's the deal if 95% of these 16800 Yahoo posts are about crash in Premiere or Microsoft Movie Maker or some other buggy tool? You could even search for an f-word, and you'll find a lot of posts with that word, then you can make any conclusion you like about that word being so often cited and then we could start a lengthy discussion about it, but what's the point? I can find 10000 posts about "single task" + "bad" but I'd never use this to justify anything. I give you concrete facts from my experience, so please give me something concrete in return, not 16800 Yahoo posts about something out there.
"Disadvantages: There's also the problem of recompression. While the human eye can be fooled by JPEG's compression, computers aren't. Thus, when you compress from MJPEG into another format to use for distribution, you will receive a lower-quality picture than if you had a lossless source because there is data missing which, while it's not important to the visual cortex, is very important to a mathematical analysis of things such as color data. The only time you should use MJPEG otherwise is for fast-editing temporary files, but DON'T use them as your final source."
I know that already, thank you.
since you said i'm the one who suggested that you use uncompressed video and that doing so the computer doesn't crash...
You suggested that in a different thread about 10GB MJPEG limitation. That's another bug that may be or may be not related to the crash problem.
then why don't you work that way and finish your video?
Yes, I can employ this trick. I will do it if I'm forced to (i.e. if I absolutely have no other way to load MJPEG in QT Player and Apple refuses to fix that crash). However, I'll push Apple with fixing the issue at the same time. Maybe they'll work something out while I'm using uncompressed RGB workaround or some other workaround.
mjpeg is unstable in that regard so contact the codec manufacturer/developer and ask them why or give them the bug report because it's not apple
Unfortunately it is Apple, because it's the Apple's software that crashes. All the other codecs and video editors work fine, and there are even conditions when Apple doesn't crash, like loading uncompressed RGB. Since crash is inside QuickTime I will send my bugreport to Apple. If the crash had happened inside the MJPEG codec, I'd have sent the bugreport to

hello. is there a way i can see recorded date and time for each clip after i have captured hdv from my xha1 via fcp?
i have search many forums and found no answers. this would make organizing much easier
i know it works with dv. but with hdv, obviously it is a different case, unfortunately:(
well, i really hope someone could help me with this.
    thanks:)

    thanks for replies.
well, you cant access this information from the finder. you will get the date when it is captured into your mac, but not when the clips are recorded. if i am wrong pls tell me.
I have catDV and it is only working with dv and not hdv. i havent tried to capture with live capture though. but as far as i have understood Squarebox doesnt support hdv.
if you managed to access this info with live capture and catDV from HDV, can you please confirm it again. if you did, i would be very happy...

  • Bad image quality when importing from word

When importing from MS Word 2003 to RH X5.0.2, embedded
images are converted to jpg whith an obviously quite moderate
compression qulity. This is particularly evident for screenshots.
Is there a way to improve the image quality?

Peter , these images were copied and pasted directly in to
the Word-document (using the Print Screen button) but I did find
out something. RoboHelp generates two image files of the types PNG
and JPG for each Word image (named, e.g., image102.png and
image103.jpg). Regretably, the lesser quality JPG is always
referenced in the topics instead of the much better PNG. Sometimes
the two images greately differ in size (pixel size), but most of
the time they are about the same size.
So the task might be to change the references in all topics
using a script and then manually checking the images for their
    size.
An observation: Any GIF images in the Word file (i.e., real
*.gif files that were inserted over the Insert menue) remain GIF
files after the import, they are not converted and maintain a good
    quality.
