Mpg and 3gp files

I am new to imovie and having trouble getting past the first step!! I cannot get any of my files to import. They are all .mpg and .3gp files.  What can I do to make them import?  HELP!!

QT does not export sound from muxed mpeg files: QT Mpeg Limitations. This freeware should do the trick: Mpeg StreamClip
If the mpegs in question are mpeg-2 you will need to buy the mpeg2playbackcomponent from Apple ($20 US). Note that these programs will not work with encrypted Hollywood movies.

  • I have .MPG and .MTS files on my computer. Can I convert at high quality?

    I received .MPG and .MTS files from a friend who shot the video clips on a Sony HDR-CX150, and are now on my computer.
    Log and Transfer sadly doesn't work because of the disassembled file structure... Total Bummer.
    Will these AVCHD camcorders allow me to throw the footage back on the camera, and THEN perform a log and transfer?
    (I don't know if my friend still has the manual)
    Side note: I bought Aimersoft Total Video Converter and it seemed to work great, but the quality of the video output is AWFUL. I'm so disappointed.

    Try MPEG Streamclip for the MPG files. Lots and Lots of posts explaining its use can be found here on the forum.
    Did ClipWrap work on the mts files?
    iirc, AVCHD seems to be a one way format. It may be worth reading through the camera manual or going to one a website for the camera to see just to see if going backwards is possible.
    Good luck,

  • How do you play MPG and WMV files on a MAC?

    I am no longer able to play MPG and WMV files on my MAC. I have Flip4MAC, which is I think what I used to use to play them (but not sure). All I know is that I used to be able to before but now they won't play. Do I need some sort of different software or has Microsoft started making these files in a way that won't allow MAC users to play them? If anyone is kind enough to help, please explain in the most basic terms as I'm not that computer literate.

    If the .mpg/.mpeg files are non-rights-protected you should be able to play them in Quicktime or iTunes. If the wmv files are non-rights-protected you should be able to use Flip4Mac. If the mpg/mpeg or wmv files are rights-protected you'll need the software or subscription that allows you to view copyrighted files.

  • Itunes/quicktime crashes when trying to play video podcasts and 3GP files

    Hello all,
    I've searched these forums and didn't see anything that might help me, so if know of any solutions posted already, please let me know. I have an HP laptop(AMD Turion 64 X2 2.0 GB processor, 2 GB or RAM) running Windows Vista Home Premium. I used to be able to play 3GP files at one time with Quicktime, but now I cannot. Then, the other day I tried to play a video podcast and it starts to play, then says, "Itunes has stopped working". Quicktime does the same thing with 3GP files. This was before my update to Itunes 8.0. It happpened with Itunes 7.5.11.1 or whatever the last version was. It obviously does the same thing with Itunes 8. I've tried completely uninstalling Itunes and quicktime, then reinstalling them both and I still have the same problem. Just a note: I tried playing the video podcast via Windows Media Playey, and it worked fine, except for no audio(I don't think WMP has AAC support) so I think something is conflicting between Itunes and my computer. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
    From the notes for the release:
    iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

  • Converting mpg and avi.

    hey everybody, Ive been scanning these forums for information on adding video into the 5th gen ipod , Ive learned alot of things but surprisingly theres not much information on converting mpg and avi files without quicktime pro. In my opinion Id rather have many music videos, live performances etc, than making the effort of coding 2 hour long dvd movies. so ive tried FortyTwoDVDVxPlus http://ipsp.kaisakura.com/fortytwovx.php and this program is great for just that, just drag the avi or mpg in and select ipod as the output and thats it. Without the license you can only get 10 minutes of any file, none of my music videos are that long. so it codes a 4 minute music video into .m4v in less than 4 minutes. itunes opens them up and im just waiting to see if my ipod will play them. if it goes smooth I plan on buying the license, hope this helps.

    I think .avi is a container, not a format. You can try with flip4mac and create windows media files (if you can't create any other format powerpoint accepts). On the other hand, if you have iWork-I think Keynote can be viewed from powerpoint.

  • [solved] Joining 3gp files with same aspects and everything

    Hi!
    I am using archlinux and for watching movies I use mplayer.
    When I record movies with my mobile they are in the format .3gp.
    Sometimes I record or recive through mms smaller movie clips in a series.
    I want to join them together to one .3gp file with the same quality and all.
    I have been looking for a good help for doing this on the web but so far haven't found anything.
    If anyone can help me how to join multiple .3gp files into one .3gp file I would be glad...

    got an error saying that I should use -oac pcm for the sound.
    tried that and the sound merged great but not the video.
    it got a lot messed up and when I try to fastforward in the movie it ends the mplayer.

  • Play .3gp-files with JMF (jffmpeg)

    Hello,
    for a MMS-Application I'm trying to show 3gp-files with Java. I heard that it should work with jffmpeg but I still couldn't get it to work.
    I added the Codec:
    String JFFMPEG_VIDEO = "net.sourceforge.jffmpeg.VideoDecoder";
    try {
        Codec video = (Codec) Class.forName(JFFMPEG_VIDEO).newInstance();
        PlugInManager.addPlugIn(JFFMPEG_VIDEO,
                video.getSupportedInputFormats(),
                video.getSupportedOutputFormats(null),
                PlugInManager.CODEC);
    } catch (Exception e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }and then started the player.
    It already works for mpg-Videos, but if the file-extension is .3gp the player throws a javax.media.NoPlayerException: Cannot find a Player for : file://C:/test.3gp
    When I change the file-name to test.mpg the player initializes but doen't show a picture.
    How can I register the 3gp-extension? Or is anything else missing?
    Thanks in advance for any hint :-)

    I still didn't get it to work as I need it, but I made some progress so far:
    Instead of jffmpeg I used the FOBS for JMF Package (http://fobs.sourceforge.net/index.html) in addition with the JMF.
    Using this package allows you to play a 3gp-Video in Swing that is stored in your filesystem (!).
    I'm still having two problems with this solution:
    - I use a Java Webstart-framework and can't acces the user's harddisk, so I need to play the 3gp-Videos directly from memory (they are stored as byte[] in a database), but the current version of FOBS is limited to 3gp-Playback only from filesystem.
    - Each user of the application has to download and install JMF and FOBS for their OS (system-specific libraries). Especially FOBS is not always very easy to install, because it needs to change some of the jmf.properites. This can not be done with the JAR-distribution-System of WebStart and I'm expecting problems, when the users try to install both packages on their own.
    If you are developing a plain Swing-Application you might be satisfied with the possibilities of FOBS and JMF.
    Good luck :-)

  • Using Windows Media player to view .3gp files

    I really need help opening up a .3gp file that was sent from a cell phone.  It said that I had to choose a file to open it with, and I chose Windows media player, but I keep getting this message.......Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player
    might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.
    Can someone please tell me how I can correct this problem.  I must see this video right away.
    Thanks!

    Looking for a way to play 3GP or 3G2 files on your computer? If so,
    there are a couple of ways you can do this. First of all, 3GP files are
    usually movies that are taken from a mobile phone.
    If you want to play these on your computer, you can either install a
    codec or download third-party software to play these files. In this
    article, I will try to mention all the different ways to play 3GP and
    3G2 files.
    Method 1 – Install Video Codec
    Firstly, if you want to play 3GP files in Windows Media Player, you have to install one of the two following programs:
    Haali media splitter
    FFFDShow MPEG_4 Video Decoder
    However, during the installation, you also have to select a specific configuration in order for it to work properly.
    For FFDShow, you need to make sure that AMR is enabled on the Audio
    Decoder screen and H263(+) is enabled on the Video Decoder screen.
    For the Haali Media Splitter program, just make sure that the Enable MP4 support box is checked.
    Method 2 – Convert File
    The second way you can play these videos is to simply convert them.
    This might be a better way so that you can play these videos on anyone’s
    computer or stream them to devices like the XBox, etc.

  • Importing 3GP Files into a Final Cut Timeline

    I'm trying to import 3GP files from a cell phone video camera into Final Cut to edit. I've read that it can be done, but I'm having difficulties setting the correct presets in FCP.
    When I import a clip into FCP I get the following settings in the clip window:
    FRAME SIZE: 352 x 288
    Vid Rate: 10 fps
    Compressor: H.263
    Aud Rate: 8.0 KHZ
    That said, I cannot replicate these settings when I try to set the "Sequence Settings" and therefore, the clip does not appear in the timeline when I drag it down. Is there a preset for using this file format? Is there an easier way to do this?
    Thank you in advance for your help.

    as your mobile phone footage is a non standard tv format, you really need to start off with a proper sequence setting, SD PAL, SD NTSC 4:3 then import your footage into the browser, drop it onto the timeline and let fcp auto conform to the sequence. You could also look at compressor to convert it to the right frame size, or use mpeg streamclip to turn the footage into DV QT movie
    but as the mobile footage is small and highly compressed @10 frames a sec it is never going to look great anyway

  • Importing 3gp files

    Hi, I've shot a short clip with my mobile phone which generates 3gp files. I can't import it in fcp because a message appears saying "access denied, 1 file unknown".
    How can I do to get it into fcp project ?
    Thanx for answering.
    Steve

    What is the file extension? Rename it with a .3gp extension and FCP should recognize it. Not ideal for working with in FCP though, even if recognized. It would be recommended to transcode the file to a more acceptable edit format before you bring it in to FCP. You can use the excellent (and free) MPEG Streamclip application to open this file and Export it to Quicktime Movie format (.mov) using a suitable edit codec such as the DV codec.
    MPEG Streamclip can be found here: http://squared5.com

  • Using .3gp Files In Captivate

    I'm attempting to use Adobe Media Encoder to convert a .3gp file into a .F4V or .FLV file to insert into a Captivate project.  The conversion seems to go fine in AME but when I insert the resulting the file into my project the video portion plays as expected but there is no audio (and yes, I've checked my speakers).  :-)

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

    Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
    It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
    There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
    So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
    Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
    ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
    Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
    Do keep us posted please .
    Cheers,
    Rob

  • H.263 Exports and .mp4 Files

    First off I am running CS5 on Windows 7.
    I am trying to export videos for Blackberry devices (specifically the older models which I don't believe support h.264 decoding.)  On my old computer, using Sorenson Squueze, I was able to produce a file that would play on the older models. I've exported several videos using the h.264 format, which play on newer devices but only play audio on the older phones.
    I've been trying to use the mpeg4 preset, but it seems to only be capable of playing 3gp files, and the ones that I export don't seem to play very well, if at all,on the devices.  There's the option under the mpeg4 preset to change the Multiplexer to mp4, which I've tried.  This always results in an unplayable file.  Unplayable in Device Manager, unplayable in Quicktime.  Does anyone have any experience with these devices? or with the mp4 multiplexer?  Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
    I ran the old file, that I was exporting from Squeeze through GSpot, so if any of you can read it and tell me where to start, or conclusively that this file/its properties cannot be replicated in Premiere, I'd be very grateful.

    Any chance you can explain what you did/why it helped?  I see that you have it on level 3, and have enabled the resynchronization marker... is that what made it work with the mp4 multiplexer?
    I used the MP4 multiplexer instead of the 3GPP multiplexer; I think that 3GPP is far more strict about how a file can be encoded and packaged, and the BB seems fine with MP4 as a container. That said, the BB video camera records to 3GPP files, so who knows?
    Simple profile is a must; ASP won't work. Levels dictate the pixel dimensions of a file, the frame rate, and the maximum (and probably minimum) bitrate. Profiles actually describe what capabilities an particular standard or "part" has and can use to encode a file; for example, B-frames. To define a 320x240, 30fps, 400kbps file, I had to use Level 3... no biggie. Changing the level will automatically clamp those parameters, so you can see where the restrictions lie. Check here for more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG-4
    I used CBR, though you could probably use VBR 1-pass; 2-pass is not available. Your content will dictate what's best.
    The biggest change I made was setting the Short Header to "No;" this was set to "Yes" by default. With this on, the dimensions were flip-flopped: height became 320, and width became 240. However, instead of being stretched, the video just expanded to the width dimension and stopped, maintaining aspect ratio. Turning this off allowed a proper encode. Resynchronization Markers were on by default; it didn't seem to make a difference. It might with streaming/transmitted video, but probably not with locally stored video.
    That's pretty much it; I've typically used Squeeze in the past for my BB encodes, but I was actually quite happy with what came out of Premiere. I might use it going forward.
