MPG convert to MPEG-4

I was told QT Pro would do this for me. I can't see where or how to do it. Any ideas? Thanks

One workaround is to convert mpeg-1 files to uncompressed avi with this freeware Windows program.VirtualDub
QT will read the uncompressed avi format and will export both video and sound from the avi if you have QT Pro. Only problem you may have is that the uncompressed avi will be a very large file (8 megs/sec or so) so if the mpeg is very long you will have to do the conversion in small segments. Otherwise just open the mpeg-1 in VDub and go to the File menu, where you can use Save as Avi and it will by default use uncompressed format.

  • .mov to .mpg Converter?

Is there a converter, preferably free, that would convert an .mov file to an .mpeg (and not mp4)?
I have a PC-based friend who wants such a conversion, but (as confirmed by discussions on these boards) QT 7 doesn't do it. MPEG Streamclip apparently has the capability in certain circumstances, but with an .mov file loaded, the "convert to MPEG" options are grayed out.

Is there a converter, preferably free, that would convert an .mov file to an .mpeg (and not mp4)?... BitVice makes MPEG-2 not MPEG-1, AFAIK.
On a Mac the extension ".MPEG" usually refers to multiplexed MPEP2/MP2 (but can include MPEG2 with other MPEG-1 audio layers) file compression. Multiplexed MPEG-1 files are normally designated with the ".MPG" extension.
If MPEG-1 is desired, then iVCD or Visual Hub (no longer supported) are both viable options but still not free. FFmpegX (share-ware) or MPEG2 Works (pay-ware) will also work but are not as easy to use.

Great hearing for you all! I thought I was all alone this past weekend. I did learn a lot this weekend. I really like the InDesign product.(half-the-battle) But to be helped by the prestigious “Sandee Cohen” was an honor indeed.”  I ordered the InDesign CC today.  Peter, I appreciate all the feedback on Lynda too. They are loaded with lots of good videos. Derek too honed in on one of the most important aspects!  Since I have been working with Word for most of the first portion of the book this will be a big help. I looked at the comments big help ! Thanks a ton ALL!  Have a wonder day or evening whenever you read this reply.

  • Converting muxed mpeg 2

Which 3rd party utility should I use to convert muxed mpeg 2 (from sony hd camcorder) to format compatible with imovie?
Thanks - new macbook pro owner.......having difficulties!

For most Sony HD camcorders, you should be able to import the MPEG2 directly into iMovie.
    For example [see this link|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793]
However, if you wish to convert manually, there is a free third party app called MPEG Streamclip that will convert. I recommend converting to Apple Intermediate Codec in the same dimensions.
You may also need the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, which os $20 online from Apple.
MPEG Streamclip will tell you if you need this.

  • Convert from MPEG-1-film to iMovie

I have some video sequences from a Kiwi friend sent to me back in 1993 on a cd. They run easily on my pc (Compaq), but I would like to include them with a newer footage.
However I cant open the files and iMovie 8 keeps telling me that the files are not a movie file?
When I look at the file it says
    Name: 1993 Denmark4f.mpg
    File type: MPEG-1-film
    Size: 233 MB
What shall I do to get access to the film on my iMac4,1 with an intel core duo processor

oh...and Jon, the mac recgonizes my files as mpeg-1...in the preview screen there is NO thumbnail and next to "kind" it says MPEG-1 Movie. ???
QT applications tend to be somewhat non-specific with muxed compression formats. If you check using different "Info" windows you may find the file described as "Muxed MPEG Stream", "Muxed MPEG-2", "MPEG-1", etc. Remember, QT is not based on "muxed" synchronization technology and identifications may well depend on trapping programmed into the given application you are using at any given time. Best source for info would be the MPEG Streamclip "Show Stream Info" window. It will correctly identify the audio and video compression formats, their data rates, audio sampling rate, recognized aspect ratio for the video, etc.
I had some teenagers at my house last week and let them play around on my "super-cool" imac...I thought maybe one of them had accidentally changed a setting???
Probably not a factor. Recognition process is automatic for the most part. Some have said that mixing HD with SD content creates problems. (Believe the fix was to download all SD content and then delete it before downloading the HD.) Others say the setup order is all important to prevent getting stuck in one "mode" or the other. I also prefer capturing manually which seems to work 100% of the time for me as long as I first play back as sample of the camcorder file first to "reset" the current capture mode. (E.g., HDV shows a "blue screen" until I am actually playing HDV content and press the import button.) Suspect you either discovered and later forgot the "proper" work flow for your camera or, as some have said, the v7.1 update modified the routine so it doesn't work as well as it first did. Suspect only time will tell for sure. Remember, this is all newly charted ground as far as Apple is concerned and frankly, I think their still trying to "iron out the bugs."

  • PLEASE HELP: movies converted to Mpeg-4 files won't sync to ipod

    hi,
i created some movies in avi format, used quicktime to convert to mpeg-4 files, pulled them into itunes and they play fine. however, when i try to sync/transfer them to my ipod, it won't let me. i have taken all symbols except for alpha/numerical out of the file names, and it makes no difference. ANY help would be appreciated.

Just because they are in mp4 format does not mean they are iPod compatible.
Files must conform to these standards:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • Converting to MPEG-4 Files

I am a novice with iMovie. Awhile back, I purchased a digital camcorder (JVC Everio with hard disk drive 20GB) with the idea of creating iMovies. My camera allows me to directly download movie files (by UBS; no firewire option) only as Capty MPEG (MPEG-2 Format) which I then must convert to MPEG 4 files to edit with iMovie. What software is recommended for this conversion? (Apologies if this has been answered before.)

Search this discussion group for mention of "MPEG Streamclip". That free application, combined with the Quicktime MPEG-2 plugin (US $19), is probably the most popular choice for converting such clips into DV format for editing with iMovie '06. VisualHub ($23 I believe), DVDxDV also work.
Some JVCs also come with a Quicktime plugin that lets you do editing in iMovie directly.

  • I want to convert the MPEG-4 Audio (.m4a) to a window media audio file

i want to convert the MPEG-4 Audio (.m4a) to a window media audio file,  i downloaded some songs so i can run them with a photo slide show on my samsung video.  the machine would not play them (could not find them)  the files that work are all windows media audio

You can't convert to WMA with iTunes. I'd be surprised if the software can't read mp3 files. iTunes can convert to that. Otherwise there are free format converters out on the web. The suite from http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ is handy and includes an audio convertor. There is no need to install their toolbar or any other 3rd party software that gets offered.

  • Convert to Mpeg the differences

    Hi all,
    Just a quick question.
I have been asked to convert some short 30 second clips to be used in a Power Point Presentation.
The client has asked for them as .mpeg I have only see .mpeg4 as format that I can convert to. Is this the same as .mpeg? And if is not then how would I convert to .mpeg?
    Thanks,
    Jamie

Your client needs to be more specific.
    My simple MPEG descriptions:
MPEG 1 is lousy quality so I would not be surprised if PowerPoint accepts this format.
MPEG 2 is used as an "inbetween" stage of DVD authoring.
MPEG 3 is the audio format .mp3
MPEG 4 is reasonably good quality, considering the data size.

  • Converting an MPEG to JPEG

I downloaded a movie clip from my camera to the computer and the default format was .MPG with a file size of 37.8MB I want to share this file through email and when I compress it into a .zip file, it only reduces to about 34.7MB. Is there a way to change the format to the much smaller .JPG format?
    Thanks!

MPG is short for MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group). MPEG defines a set of standards for compression of low-to-moderate resolution full-motion video. In your specific case, it is probably video matching the MPEG-2 specification for video data compression. MPEG-2 (with some additional constraints) is the format used on DVDs. It's not very compressible. The zip file you created is only smaller because there's a little bit of redundancy in the beginning of each frame.
JPG is short for JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group). It's a standard for compression of low to very-high resolution still images.
You cannot turn a whole movie into a photograph, but you can turn individual frames of a movie into photographs. Note that if you convert every frame of a movie into a JPEG, the result will be several-times bigger than the movie itself.
You can open your video in quicktime and use the export function to export to Picture or Image Sequence and use the Options... button to specify you want JPEG(s).
Alternatively, if you Quicktime Pro, you can re-encode the video and scale it using the h.264 codec and make it quite smaller.
