MPG in iMovie

I have just moved over to mac's so please excuse what may seem to many as idiot questions.
I am transfering my pics and MPG movie clips to my Mac via image capture. I am able to import AVI clips from my old camera into imovie, but the mpeg clips from the new one wont import.

Michael
an update as to my progress:
Even though i love a lot that the mac has to offer it is still very frustrating. A few of the issues I have are as follows:
Still have an issue with mpeg in imovie:
I have got my clips from my Sony 73 camera now converted from mpeg1 to DV but what a waste of time. With my old fuji camera the files were .avi and imported fine, copied accross an straight into imovie. With the Sony I copy THEN convert Then delete the old file and THEN import. Why imovie just doesnt support these standard clips is beyond me.
Iphoto is another.
I just want to be able to view the photos on the camera and import the ones I want. iphoto makes me import the lot then delete the ones I dont want. The other solution is to use image capture THEN import. Again more time wasted.
On my PC I had DVDshrink. A great freeware program that ripps and burns in one go. Now I have to import the DVD then pay for another program to shrink it. More steps more money and more time. (I've only done the first part of this as I am still trying to find a freeware shrink program)
I havent started on a backup program yet but am begining to expect the worst.
I was thinking of upgrading to a ImacG5 but am having 2nd thoughts now until I can get these bits smoothed out.
How are you getting along?

  • How to get MPG into imovie

I have a Sony cyber shot camera with some video on it. Its format is mpg.
imovie will not import mpg. How do I convert it into anything so it can be used?!?!

Download MPEG Streamclip, which is free.
Drag the MPG file into MPEG Streamclip.
Use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME and choose Apple Intermediate Codec.
Import the resulting file into iMovie using the FILE/IMPORT/FROM FILE menu option.

  • Easiest way to import MPG to iMovie 08?

I need a quick and easy suggestion if possible... I do not have a ton of knowledge in this area but was put in charge of creating a movie using my own files as well as files sent to me... and I told them to send me DV, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 based on what I read in the iMovie guide. Well, none of the files being sent to me are working. I need to figure this out as quickly as possible and I can't spend a ton of money. I tried the MPEG Streamclip with no luck. I will buy the quicktime plug-in for $20 if it will work but don't want to waste any more time/money on another dead end. Anyone have any guaranteed suggestions? Thanks so much in advance!!

You have to install the $20 plug in. After that, you don't have to interact with the plug in. MPEG Streamclip and Quicktime use it behind the scenes.
You can drag the .mpg into streamclip and export it in a variety of formats, including DV.

  • Does iMovie 08 actually work at all?

Long story short, I was trying to make a dvd of some old movies of our family for my daughter's upcoming wedding. The movies are in .mpg format. iMovie won't import them as .mpg. After reading some articles and forum posts I googled, I've used MPEG Streamclip to convert them to DV (which iMovie wouldn't import) and to .mov (again, which iMovie wouldn't import) and so I'm stuck. So, does iMovie actually do anything at all besides suck up space on my drive? If so, you couldn't prove it by me.
    <Edited out by the Hosts>

MPEG Streamline has a mass of options to choose from when converting video formats - which unless you have some pointers, can produce some very ******* language.
So here are a few snippets of information I've learned from a few other users and claim no credit for the advice, well except to say thank you to the original posters for their help and assistance.
    So here goes...
In order for you to be able to import your DVD footage into iMovie 08 you need to change the format of the video files.
I use MPEG Streamclip which is a free download from http://www.squared5.com/ to convert the video.
Once you have downloaded the software and installed it, pop your DVD into your iMac, open up Streamclip, then click FILE > OPEN DVD > Select the DVD from the Devices. You should see VIDEO_TS but ignore this, simply click on SELECT, then select from the drop-down list which track on your DVD you wish to open and click on Select.
After a few seconds the video should open in a new window. If you see 'Warning, the stream may have timecode breaks', click 'FIX NOW', the next page opens, make sure that 'DO NOT SKIP ANY FRAME' is ticked and click 'PROCEED'.
Wait until the video is processed and the opened page shows the video.
Now click on FILE > EXPORT TO QUICKTIME, select compression 'APPLE DV - PAL' from the dropdown menu, and move the quality bar to 100%. Click on 'Make movie'.
From the next page rename the video footage to something more memorable, and save it to th Desktop or somewhere else NOT the DVD which it defaults to - if you forget it will fail!!!
You can now import this video footage into iMovie 08 using the FILE >IMPORT MOVIES from within iMovie 08
Sailingmaster, I hope this helps you out with making a DVD for your daughter's upcoming wedding, and note, I've been using iMovie 08 for approx two months now, and find it extremely intuitive to use.

  • IMovie wont recognize my format??

quick question, I'm trying to make a dvd of in-car race footage. The video camera saves the video in a .mpg format. iMovie will not let me import any of the files because it says that quicktime cannot "Parse" it..... if i download the "QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component for Mac OS X" will that allow me to import the files to iMovie? and allow me to edit the footage?

    Yes.
    For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.

  • Trouble importing movie into iMovieHD

I'm having trouble importing a video into iMovie HD. Here's the message I get when attempting to do so: "The file could not be imported: The file “Macintosh HD/Users/Edd/Movies/ITI videos/don keehotay- Otto's 2.15.09” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -1409".
the file name and extension are, "don keehotay- Otto's 2.15.iMovieProject".
Any ideas on what I can do to get this to work?

Hi dupedd - it is an mpg file. iMovie HD needs DV formatted material. What was the source of your file?
You will need to convert it, using:
    MPEG StreamClip (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
    Apple MPEG2 PlayBack ($20):
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    And see here:

  • Premiere 12 won't recognize Cannon ZR960 and allow capture

Premiere Elements 12 won't recognize my Cannon ZR 960 video camera so I can capture video from mini cassette to my Mac computer

    RGI
    Thanks for the reply.
Premiere Elements (any version) classically works only with a firewire connection between the camera and the computer to the Premiere Elements Capture Windows for DV and HDV data capture firewire.
I am unfamiliar with this "lightning outlet". I see some say Thunderbolt = Lightning and other say Thunderbolt is not the same as Lightning. Whatever the case, I suspect that computer port is at the core of your issue with Premiere Elements which has been firewire requiring. Have not tried it, but I do not think that a firewire adapter for the lightning port would work. Have you tried that?
But, good news that iMovie recognized the Canon ZR 960. Can you import the DV.mov and MPEG2.mpg (assumed iMovie capture formats) from save location  into Premiere Elements 12 Mac?

  • Help I need a real mac

I just bought a mac mini and was excited to start saving my home movies from 8mm cassettes to my hard drive and go nuts with editing and so on and so on, yea right..not with this puppy, I have a new intel mini 1.83, what do I need to handle video editing without waiting 5 hours for a dv to become a .mov and or waiting 300 hours ti import a mpg into imovie, lol.
I have about a grand to work with, will a g4 tower be enough OR g5?
will be looking on craigslist and have found several however I have no clue what equals a mac mini towerwise for a starting point, someone told me they have an old g4 and have no problems with video editing, however looking at the specs it is underpowered versus what I have, please help.

I did video editing on my old PowerMac 9600/350, which predated even the G3 models, so it can be done on a Mac Mini.
What it boils down to is that you are having issues because you a) don't have enough memory (RAM), b) your hard drive is either quite full or simply too slow, or c) you're using software on your Mac Mini that wasn't designed for the Intel CPU.
How about telling us more about your current machine and your workflow?

Change the selection and try again."
Ive even tried opening in itunes and copying from thier but they wont open in Itunes, no message or anything they simple just dont open. its strange because it does open in quicktime player.
please if anyone has any ideas that can help me please let me know XD thanks.

First problem: You're fine. The hotter it gets, the more the fans spin up. The computer is designed so that at max load, at max fan speed, it won't overheat (unless it's obstructed by something, e.g. sitting on your bed swallowed by a comforter). It's not the best thing to keep it that toasty for days at a time, but a couple hours at a time shouldn't be a problem.
Second problem: If something in the trash won't delete, just use Secure Empty Trash and it should be fine. Since .torrent files are quite small, it should only take a couple seconds.

  • PLEASE HELP!  iMovie and .MPG Files

Hello. Please help me. I'm on a G5. 10.5.3. iMovie 7.1.2 (577) I have a series of .MPG files that I need to import into iMovie to edit, arrange and then export over to iDVD, etc. iMovie does not see the .MPG files. The Apple site states that iMovie sees only MPEG-4 files and DV files. I also own Quicktime Pro 7.5 (149.5). When I open the .MPG file in Quicktime Pro, even though the file plays perfectly, when I select "Export to MPEG-4" so I can create a readable file by iMovie, I get an error message that say's "Failed: Export process terminated unexpectedly (10). Complete frustration. Is there another way I can convert these files so iMovie can see them? What's wrong with my Quicktime Pro? I bought DivX Pro last night. I thought maybe that program would make an iMovie readable file. No luck. I used DivX to convert and it created a DivX file with NO SOUND. Wasted money.
If anyone has any solutions for my problems noted here or possible alternatives so I can achieve what I'm trying to do successfully, PLEASE ADVISE as soon as possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and THANKS, in advance, for your help.

I'm still wondering why QT Pro is failing to convert with that error message.
Well, if the video codec used in the .MPG container is MPEG2, QuickTime cannot export with a source of this format; it can only play it.
I remember reading about the reason for Apple doing this, and I forgot exactly why it is, but I think it had something to do with some legal issue. I also read that this is why Mac OS has a separate DVD Player instead of just playing DVDs right inside of QuickTime.

  • How do I get an MPG video from iPhoto to iMovie

I have several .mpg movies in iPhoto (from my SONY DSC-H5 camera) that I want to bring into iMovie. If I tr to drag them nothing happens If I export them to the desktop they are greyed out in the iMovie import.

The MPEG1 compression format was not developed by Apple and does not share Apple's QT temporal synchronization technology. As such it (like MPEG2, Flash, and other third-party proprietary compression formats) is not "fully" supported by nor can it be edited in the QT structural environment. In this case, use an MPEG based third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free), iSquint (free), Visual Hub ($$), etc. to convert your files to an intermediate compression format for editing in iMovie.
Would normally recommend DV as the intermediate format for FCP, FCE, and older versions of iMovie to avoid a secondary conversion during import. However, iMovie '08 will accept and edit in a number of different compression formats. DV is, of course still acceptable and is a reasonably fast conversion with reasonably high relative quality. Unfortunately, Animation (a very quick, higher quality compression format often used for intermediate conversions) is not properly exported at this time by iMovie '08 and should be avoided at least for the present. AIC (Apple intermediate Codec) is also a high quality compression format that could be used but is somewhat slower in conversion speed and, like DV and Animation, produces rather large files for editing. At the opposite end are codecs like MPEG4/AAC and H.264/AAC. These produce much smaller files for editing which are somewhat reduced in quality.

  • .mpg with sound in Iphoto, no sound in Imovie

    Hello Everyone,
Can someone tell me why when I play a small .mpg movie in Iphoto it will play with sound but will not when I import it into Imovie?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

I guess I must be doing something wrong, being a newbie, I probably am. I downloaded and installed Perian and set it up in system preferences, then loaded a snippeet .mpg file into Quicktime,(I have just the player version not pro) and it played fine. I then imported the same clip into Imovie and will only play with video but still no sound.
Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Can't import mpg files into iMovie

Hi I just bought a Mac (new user) and wanted to edit some old movies I had saved as an mpg file. However i can't import it into iMovie to edit it which is disappointing as I was looking forward to doing that. Anyone got any suggestions?

Once the file is converted, is it sufficient to drag and drop into an iMovie event? I tried, and certain conversions still gave me the message "not compatible with iMovie". Others, it appears the files slid into the iMovie event, but when i clicked on that event, they were no where to be found. (says "no matching files"). Any help will be greatly appreciated- I am a newbie and am lost!!

  • File conversion, from .mpg files to useable files for iMovie on new MacBook

i wasnt really sure where to post this, but since my end goal is to be able to use all my videos for editing on iMovie it seemed like the best place, i have many .mpg files that i would like to simply convert to a file of equal quality that iMovie will recognize, theres pages and pages of converters on google but they either are trial versions that will leave water marks or there are websites that will only convert files up to 100mb, i just need a simple converter for the videos i have, i dont want to spend 50 bucks on software that ill only use once and i obviously dont want water marks or a decrease in quality, if anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

You want MPEG Streamclip: http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html which is a free download.
If your movie is an MPEG-2 or VOB file (i.e. from an unencrypted DVD), you also need the MPEG2 Playback Component from Apple: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/ which costs US$19.99
