.mpg to .m4v?

I own an Elgato Eye TV 250 Plus which I use to record QAM broadcasts. I also have VisualHub which can take the original file and convert it into a .mov file which contains original AC3 sound track. However, .mov lacks some of the features (notably ratings) compared to .m4v. What's the best way to convert things into .m4v format that maintains the AC3 soundtrack?

Had to rebuild iTunes library and it won't accept most of the videos it previously had? Why?

I'm having a strange problem with iTunes -
My boot hard drive recently crashed and took iTunes and my library with it. Fortunately I had all of the music and video files themselves backed up on another drive. When I reinstalled the OS and iTunes and then attempted to add all of the music and video files back into the new, blank iTunes, it accepted all of my music files but it kept crashing when I tried to add the video files back in.
The details: using a 24" iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X version 10.9.4 both before and after the hard drive crash, and iTunes version 11.2.2 was my working copy of iTunes with all of my media files happily loaded in it's library, but the newly installed iTunes was at first 11.3.0 and now 11.3.1. Neither with version 11.3.0 nor 11.3.1 will it load all the video files into the library (haven't tried downgrading to 11.2.2, maybe I should? but we'll get to that in a minute).
I have about 300 video files of several different file types (.mpg, .mp4, .m4v, .mov) which over the years I had added to iTunes as I acquired them, and at the time of the hard drive failing, they were ALL in my iTunes library and I'd never had iTunes reject any file types. They all played fine as well as being a part of the library. And since I had added them over the years, they were added during quite a few different versions of iTunes as it was upgraded over time.
So, after I added all the music back into iTunes on the new drive, I attempted to add the videos all at one go, but it crashed after only 5 or so files being incorporated. Thinking it may have been too many at once, I tried adding them in smaller batches, but had the same problem. I took a look at what it had added before crashing each time, and found that every time it would load only mpeg 4 files, either .mp4 or .m4v, and would crash as soon as it encountered an .mpg or .mov. So I added all 50 or so of the mpeg 4's, and then tried adding the .mov and .mpg files individually and found that no matter which one it was, it was apparently the file type it didn't like, not the individual files themselves. Randomly trying about 75 led me to that conclusion, but I didn't try all 250, so I guess it's possible there might be some .mpg's it would take, however I only had about 10 .mov files and it won't take ANY of them. Considering all of these files regardless of their type were part of my old iTunes library for years and worked just fine, I don't understand why it won't take them again. I tried adding them by dragging them to the open iTunes pane, and by using the import command, and neither way works, all that happens is it crashes. Every time.
I tried converting these files to mpeg 4 types, and when I do that, it will take the converted version. However, a lot of them don't come out right when converting them, either the audio is messed up or the dimensions of the movie are incorrect and stretched or squished. It seems I could fix this problem by making sure every video file I add is an mpeg 4, but since I'm having so much trouble converting them properly and it's terribly time consuming, I was hoping someone would have insight into this strange, strange problem. I tried to see if this was a known issue with iTunes, that it only takes mpeg 4 files now, but I can't find anything about that. Anyone know if that's the case? And therefore hopefully an upcoming patch will fix it? Or is it just a weird, weird problem with me only?
Very frustrating, hopefully someone can help me out. Even if there's no apparent fix, maybe someone can recommend a good application for converting movie files that is easy enough to use for someone who's not familiar with the process, i.e. maybe it can auto-detect things like the audio quality and dimensions so it comes out right without me having to be a real whiz at it? OK, so I have now found that this is apparently normal for iTunes, to only accept mpeg 4 movie files, all the searching I did before I must have worded it wrong because I couldn't find anything about this, incredibly. Had been looking for why iTunes won't take all the files it previously did, like if it had been changed, and it hasn't, it's allegedly always taken only mpeg 4 files. Also I had been searching for why iTunes crashes every time I try and add/import anything but mpeg 4 files, and even sometimes with mpeg 4 files. That isn't normal, it's supposed to just do nothing apparently as I've just found out. So for these reasons I didn't find the answer despite my searching all over the web.
So I guess that answers my own question now, but I'm still perplexed as to why I absolutely, definitely, without any doubt, had several hundred movies of a few different video file types loaded, accessible and playable in my iTunes library that everything here claims iTunes never accepted. It apparently shouldn't have been possible for me to have done this, but for probably 10 years it's been this way.
Perhaps since I don't remember adding these files to iTunes anymore recently than maybe 6 or 7 years ago, the iTunes back then did accept all kinds of file types? Or could I have somehow had some video codecs or software that expanded the capability of my movie players like Quicktime Player that unwittingly also allowed iTunes to take those files as well? All I know is somehow it worked! So now my question is how did I have it working before, so that maybe I can make it work again.

My iPod doesn't even work, I bought it today!

Listen here, I tried to add some videos, but it didn't work. then I finally found out how to convert files from mpg to m4v... Then I added two m4v files, and one of them worked. Later it popped up a window that I had to update my iPod, and I followed instructions and did everything like I should. Now I'm very unsatisfied of my purchase of this iPod 30 GB. It's only showing a bright, white light. I can't turn it off or on, I can't even open iTunes with it or anything, It's just stuck or something. I really need help! As I see it now, the iPod is totally useless and now it's broken and a piece of junk. What am I supposed to do? I paid so much money for some garbage, please help me, I really need my iPod to tomorrow.

Frontrow playback issues

Hi all,
thanks in avance for any suggesitons.
I have some .mpg and .m4v movies in my Movies folder.
They will open up but stay black, i.e no playback of the movie.
Some normal imported DVDs and .avi files play ok.
Is this normal and if yes, can it be fixed?

You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs. In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them), particularly any DivX extension to Safari. However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/en/software/mac/player

I have started using HandBreak to convert my DVDs.
I am currently using the Linux command line version and wrote a script to mass convert all my DVDs and its doing a really good job and taking about 1/2-3/4 hour to convert 1 DVD.

Converting and storing videos and slideshows to/in MAC

i am trying to figure out where to store my videos and slideshows (i use Aperture) but before i get there i am noticing that i am getting an error on some of my file types and also that i have a lot of different file types.
does anyone know how to fix this error or why it is coming up?
does anyone know a convenient way to convert these various file types so they are Mac friendly and if so what software and command to use?
i have EPS, PDF, mov, mpg, mp4, m4v and wmv etcetera
ideally i would also like to STORE these in one place if at all possible.
i currently have Aperture and Adobe Bridge.

Premiere Pro CC 2014 on Mac - MP4's Green won't import

Hello!
I'm trying to import MP4's that I've recorded but when I attempt to import them they are just showing as solid green screens. I've tried quitting out of all Adobe Products, signing out and signing back into the products, and still not having any success.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

When i attempt to import XDCAM EX clips or MP4 files into Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, received the error message "Unsupported format or damaged file."
For MP4 files that give this error message, rename the file extension from MP4 to MPG or M4V. This will invoke an alternate import module that will correctly handle the file

Problem with video files

Hello,
I'm looking for a PC software wich suport the N8 video files.
When i try to import the movies made with my N8 in Adobe premiere pro, there not opening.
The only way i found out was to convert them in quicktime the reconvert them in APP. But it's taking a very long time and a bit of the quality.
Do someone know an editing software for PC which can DIRECTLY open movies filles from a Nokia ?

The N8 saves video files as .MP4, so when you import, you will either get an "unsupported format" message or the audio plays with no visual.
Have you tried to rename the file extension from MP4 to MPG or M4V. This should invoke an alternate import module that will correctly handle the file.

Why is Quicktime 7.1 hanging up my computer playing video files?

Please, I need help because this is way frustrating. I bought an iPOD 5th gen 60 Gb and QT 7.1 Pro to convert my video files and sync them with my iPOD.
My computer hangs up every time I try and play a local video file from my hard drive. (Same thing in iTunes for that matter). It doesn't matter whether it is -mpg, mpeg, m4v or AVI. Funny thing is that they all play just dandy in Windows Media Player (V10.0) and ATI Media File Player (part of the Radeon All-in-Wonder card multi media suite V9.14). The only files that played on QT 7.1 Pro were the test files on the apple site.
I tried playing the videos in QT 7.1 in "safe mode". I found the video streams worked on most of the above listed formats but without sound (sound card was auto-disabled in safe mode). AVIs still choked as well as did my ATI generated m4v files off my All-in-Wonder capture card. I then tried it again in normal mode with the sound card disabled and got the same results.
Could it be a conflict with my sound card or associated drivers? Could it be a codec issue? I know there are several flavors of codecs for seemingly the same file extension, but if I have them on my computer and other media players are accessing them, why not QT. Or is it something else? Can I update or add codec drivers to QT? Should I roll back to a previous version of QT 7.x? If so which?

IPod video format

I used Quicktime Pro to cahnge the format of my videos from Quicktime format to the iPod format. It worked for 3 of my videos but since then the audio doesn't work after I change the format and play it in iTunes. I changed it from .mpg to .m4v. Does anyone know why this is happening? PLEASE HELP!!

MPEG1 (.mpg) files are partially supported by QT and iTunes players. It is not supported by the iPod player. Changing the file extension (.mpg to .mov) for a file does not change its audio and/or video compression format. Convrt the files using an MPEG based third party file converter. If you use QT Pro to convert muxed files (MPEG1, MPEG2, VOB, some AVI, AVI MJPEG, etc), you will end up without the audio track.

IPod video not showing sound, only image

I have movie files that are .mpg files. I just got my first iPod a few days ago, and found out that iPods don't play .mpg files. In iTunes, under "Advanced" there is an option to "Convert Selection for iPod" to convert the files into .m4v files. When I do this, however, the videos come through beautifully, but with no sound. Is there anything at all I can do about this? I have all these music videos that I would really like on my iPod. Is there any reliable software out there for iMac users that really converts files from .mpg to .m4v?

Does quicktime support mpeg files

does quicktime support mpeg beacuse i downloaded despicable me 2 and opened it up and a messgae said that this file is not supported. HELP.

Mavericks, Mountain Lion, and Lion with QuickTime Player do support some MPEG2 formats, e.g. m2v video only files. Some additional MPEG2 formats can also be played with the (paid for) Apple MPEG2 QuickTime Component and the old QuickTime Player 7.6.6 however this combination still cannot play properly MPEG2 with AC3 audio. As an example nearly all VOB files will not play properly with either of these two combinations.
MPEGStreamClip with the paid for Apple MPEG2 QuickTime component can play all MPEG2 files properly as can VLC by itself, i.e. they can also properly play VOB files.
You would have to be more specific about your MPEG files so we can judge what the issue is.
Note also that some people call H.264 files MPEG files although it is a totally different format.
A starting point would be to tell us what the file extension is, .VOB, .m2v, .mpg, .mov, .m4v, .ts, or something else. If you can also use one of the following utilities it should give you lots of information about what kind of video file it is.

When trying to convert quicktime mpg video files to m4v I am unable to open them or lose the audio completely. How can I fix this?

So I am in nursing school and am making a group project that involves interviews of current RN's. I've been tasked with putting the video together from all the clips, even though I don't really have any experience with iMovie or iMovieHD (both of which I have on my MacBookPro). One of the interviews was recorded on what I think must have been some kind of Sony camera (I can find out if this is important), but I got the files off of a flash drive that my group member gave me. The files all opened in quicktime with no problem with complete audio and video, but when I tried to open it in either iMovie or iMovieHD it stated it could not "parse" the file (in HD) or just simply did not open (in regular iMovie). I'll have to learn the program either way but have been messing around with iMovieHD more so I would prefer to use this if I can. How can I convert the MPG files to m4v and still retain the audio part of the video? I've tried loading it into iPhoto and they won't load. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I'm running out of time to put this video together! Thanks!!

When I import a .mpg video into iTunes and then do the "Convert Selection for Ipod"....the resulting video .m4v comes with no audio!!!

You have to separate out the audio and video tracks (referred to as "demuxing") of an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file before you import it into QuickTime. Try one of the following utilities:

ITunes handling .mpg files as .m4v

Hi, I've got couple of music videos imported long ago in .mpg format that I'd like iTunes to handle as it handles .m4v music videos.
What I'm really looking for is, in Front Row, the .mpg music videos to show within the music folder
(Front Row > Music > ...) as opposed to how they're being shown now (Front Row > Movies > ...) with no choice but to arrange them alphabetically.
Will I need to convert them all?
