MPG won't play on a Mac

I'm new to Premier, so I'm sure you may need more information being diagnosing my problem.  Basically, I have a project from which I exported an MPG file. The file appears to play fine on PC's, but on a Mac, my customer is getting "The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands."  Can anyone give me some suggestions on what might be the problem?  Thank you...

Thanks Jeff.  In this case, I should have mentioned that my customer is able to play other MPG files without any issue.  In this particular case, I was editing an existing video - I simply deleted a scene and exported a new MPG.  Client can play the original MPG, he just can't play the one I exported.  Sorry - I should have mentioned that in the original post.  Any idea why this might be the case, and what I could try to fix this?
I've read a lot about codecs recently btw - but I don't really understand how to identify what codec an existing file has - or what options I have when exporting.  Might it be the codec I'm using that is incomptable with Macs?

I used iDVD to create an IMG file
You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.

  • Downloaded tv show from itunes and it won't play on my mac, just a black screen

downloaded tv show from itunes and it won't play on my mac, just a black screen

Did you burn the CD as an audio CD?
If not, that's your problem. Otherwise, without more details I can only guess. You might try a different brand of disk, or if you're using CD-RW try CD-R.
    Regards.

You can't boot OS X with a Windows boot device.
Internet Recovery is the next step. Follow ssls6's advice.

  • How do I fix? Flash videos like YouTube won't play sound on MAC OSX 10.5.8

Sound won't play on YouTube and other flash web based videos on my MAC OSX 10.5.8 So I installed the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player and it still doesn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled adobe flash player. Nada. I updated my computer software and firmware. Still nothing. I checked my sound and apple movie trailers play just fine.  Please assist.
    Thanks so much!!!!
Oh, I have tried to play videos in both Safari and Firefox. No sound in both.

Yay!!!! My business partner @goodbadtech (on twitter) fixed it.  Apple repair fixed it. Just got it back this morning. Then I updated Adobe flash as Mozilla asked me to do and the sounds disappeared again! Was so frustrated.  But Spencer found this link and that saved the day :-)

  • Dualdisc cd side won't play on my mac mini intel core duo w Superdrive

Shakira Fijacion Oral DualDisc "CD" side will insert and then automatically reject from my Mac Mini - Intel Core Duo. The DVD side plays fine. Unfortunately iTunes not smart enough to work with DVD side. There is a query in IPOD forum about Springsteen DualDisc also failing on intel mini mac that is listed at "answered" but for the life of me, I can't tell if you are supposed to just not buy DualDisc or else take the Mac Mini back for a new drive.
mac mini (intel core duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB RAM

Mac Mini Intel Core Duo's did not ship until 2006 which seems plenty of time for Apple to announce 'we have a problem' and what their recommended solution.
Why would they do that ? I mean, they don't have a problem. The inventors of DualDisc made a type of disc that won't play in all players, and Apple can't really do anything about it. Superdrives are not made by Apple, it's just Apple's name for a DVD burner; the Superdrives that are found in various Macs come from several different manufacturers, and although Apple probably ensures that the Superdrive and the Mac work well together, they won't test whether it works with each type of disc (usually, the manufacturer will).
However, that is probably limited to redbook/standards-compliant discs; since a DualDisc's CD side doesn't comply with any standard other than "DualDisc", and because it is not considered important enough to be officially supported by most (if not all) manufacturers, they probably won't test them since they're bound to get mixed results anyway.
Similarly I don't remember seeing a "strictly redbook only" disclaimer on any of the media available from Apple describing the capabilities of its Superdrive when I was making my mac mini buying decision.
You didn't see one because it is not required. Asking that Apple (or any other company) warns you that their players won't play non-redbook CDs is a bit like asking that they tell you everything your optical drive won't play. Apple claims that their Superdrives will read CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R DL, which aren't only a bunch of weird-looking letters, but also correspond to a standard. When you see a CD logo on a drive, it means that it will play redbook-compliant CDs. Your Dell player simply does more that what it is supposedly capable of, but because one (or many) optical drives will play DualDisc doesn't mean that they all have to.

  • After a itunes update my HDV mov files won't play on my mac.

I applied and update to my MacBook pro and BAM!! Now my HDV.mov files won't play with QuickTime or final cut pro. I'm in the middle of a project and I can't finish it because when the files play in fcp I get a error. Can anybody help me with this?

I have two anserws I think might work for you. The first one is: This solved the issue down loading and re-installing Quicktime 7.5.5
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/blog/posts/using_pacifist_to_downgrade_quicktime .html
I'd create a backup of the System / Components and Quicktime folders first though, just incase you need to revert back.
    and the 2nd one is:
I HAVE A FIX...AND IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!  Actually a friend found this fix somewhere else, but I just did it and it worked.  The only rub is you need to have access to another system that has not been updated to iTunes 10.5 or QT 7.7.
On the system that has not been updated, go to:
MAC HD/System/Library/Components and copy that folder to an external drive...next go to
MAC HD/System/Library/QuickTime and copy that folder to an external drive.
On the system that is not working, go to the same places on the MAC HD and delete those two folders.  Then copy the folders from your external drive to the same location.  Restart you system...i did it twice...and everything should be back to normal.  This has worked on both systems here that were previously jacked up.  If you do not have access to a system that was not messed up, let me know and maybe we can swap files.
I havent tried any of these yet because I'm in the middle of a project and I dont wnat anything to go wrong right now. After I'm done I will be sure to get started on one of these.
If you try any one of these let me know how it works out.

  • DVDs made in iDVD won't play on a Mac

I've made a fair share of dvds from DVDSP and iDVD (version 7.0.4) but a few days ago I tried playing one that was created in iDVD on my computer (in the same drive that burned it) and it wouldn't recognize the disc. I tried several other dvds and they're spit back out too (all of them play fine on a standard dvd player). At this point, none of the dvds I've made from iDVD will play on my computer, while the dvds made from DVDSP seem to play just fine.
It seems odd that a dvd won't play on the very same drive that burned it. Does Apple do this intentionally? I need to copy one of the discs, but that won't happen until the computer recognizes it. Is there a workaround?

Thanks for the help. I looked into all these possible issues:
The drive itself works fine. Tested about 15 "homemade" discs and they all played normally.
I don't think it's the DVD brand. The at-fault dvds are Panasonic but my other Panasonic-burned dvds work okay. And they're all DVD-Rs.
I have 30g of hard disk space.
I checked the burn speed and it is set at the default ("Maximum Possible"). I've used this setting on my other DVDs which play fine, but maybe it could be the culprit?
The only other issue I could figure out is that the DVDs that won't play all have the same iDVD menu template. Perhaps there is a glitch with that menu?

  • Downloaded a song on my Iphone. Song also downloaded to itunes when I opened it. However, the song won't play on either Mac or my Ipod though it shows up in Library. Plays on phone just fine!

I downloaded the single Skyfall on my iphone. When I opened Itunes on my Mac the song downloaded with no problem (so I thought). I loaded the song onto my Shuffle and it froze when I went to play that song. I knew the order of my library and every single time I tried to play Skyfall my Shuffle would stop playing anything until I turned it off and then back on. I plugged it into my laptop, opened Itunes and deleted it off. My Library shows Skyfall under Adele as artist but it will not play the song! I just downloaded 2 other songs this week and have had no problems playing on my laptop and being loaded onto my Ipod. This laptop is authorized to play my downloads. The song plays just fine on my phone, but I really want it on my Shuffle because that is my running buddy.

    Hi Krys1030,
You can try deleting the song and downloading it again by following this article:

  • DVD won't play in my mac, but it will in the DVD player

So we made this great little film about our son swimming and burned it to a disk. The disk playes just fine in regular dvd players. However, when we tried to view it on the computer, it says that it is a blank disk. Why would this be and how can I view the movie on my computer?
    Thanks
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Welcome turk_cubed
Try making a disc image from the file menu of your iDVD6 project first. Test that disc image with apple's DVD Player application. If it plays as expected then use apple's disc utilities or toast to burn to Verbatim DVD-R or Maxell at 4x or slower.
    Hope this is Helpful.

  • MPG won't play

I have an .mpg movie I made several years ago on a PC. However, I cannot get it to open on my mac or under Windows (on Fusion). I get an error n Quicktime that says it is not a file format that it understands. I cannot open it in FlipforMac or in iMovie. From the Get Info, it appears to be an MPEG 2. Are there any converters that may be able to help out?
I can open it with VLC. But I want to be able to import it into my iMovie library and burn it off to a new DVD.

I have a similar issue. I have some short videos that I want to edit together for a DVD...they are in .mpg format (whatever that is) and they are viewable in Quicktime and also with VLC> I use the VLC expoert wizard and re-formatted them to .MOV which I am assuming is Quicktime?) Formthere, I attempt to import them (using "IMPORT MOVIES" cmd in iMovie. That's when it gets weired. The vidoes virtually disappear from the desktop folder they were in and they are NOT visible for editing in iMovie! I feel like I am close, but must be formatting incorrectly. ANy hep is appreciated.

  • Movie Downloads from iTunes Store won't play on my Mac or iPhone

Have just downloaded my Star Trek digital copy from the iTunes store; it is sitting on my Mac's hard drive as a .m4v file of nearly 2Gb; seems OK. However, if I click on 'play' in iTunes it shows a progress bar playing in iTunes & in the separate movie window I get a blank screen & no sound. I then sync'ed it with my iPhone & when I go into the iPod on the iPhone & play the movie I get the error "This movie could not be played". I have some podcasts on the Mac & iPhone & they work OK on both platforms.
Now I understood that the .m4v format was alright to play on both my Mac & on the iPhone but it's not working for me...anyone encountered this before / got any ideas pls?
    Appreciate any help thx...Brooke.

Same issue. I've been buying TV shows and movies on iTunes for a long time and copying them to my iPhone to watch on my TV. A few days ago, I tried to move a rented movie to my iPhone the same way I always did, click the "move" button next to the movie under the movies tab for the iPhone in iTunes when iPhone was connected and then click "apply". It would do a quick sync without copying anything.
I thought I had a bum file, so I e-mailed Apple support and they reset the purchase so that I could redownload, which I'm doing now.
But my recently downloaded episodes of Lost will also not copy to my iPhone. AND they will not even play on my iMac. When I try to play them, it shows only a grey screen with a progress bar. TV shows and movies purchased and downloaded weeks or months ago still play fine.
No changes have been made to my system. After the rented movie didn't play and copy, I did a update check and downloaded and installed the latest versions of iTunes and the iPhone firmware. That didn't fix it. I have the newest versions of the Quicktime and iTunes. The computer is authorized for these purchases. The iPhone is authorized.
I've looked at similar threads and have not found a solution. I'm stumped. If anyone has a solution let me know.
