Mplayer ang Subtitles
Hello there....
I'm trying to watch a movie with greek subtitles... But i cant !!!
Here are my settings so far....
-There is no /etc/mplayer/config file
-I've edited ~/.mplayer/config and added inside
stop-xscreensaver="yes"
sub-fuzziness=1
font=/usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans.ttf
#with subfont-text-scale you can change the size of fonts
subfont-text-scale=3
subcp="iso-8859-7"
and the file command for the srt file outputs
Prison.Break.The.Final.Break.WS.PDTV.XviD-iLM.srt: ISO-8859 text, with CRLF line terminators
The result is something like " ___π____ . .π "
Can anybody please help me??
Thank you very much
archkick, you are already told how you can remedy the problem, I just want to explain why.
srt subtitles may be in different character encodings, unfortunately a character encoding is not written in srt file. Some media players determine a character encoding by themselves, mplayer does not. So you should change "subcp" mplayer option to different Greek character encodings (including UTF-8 and other Unicode) until you get readable subtitles.

It works fine with VLC using the codec avc1 , so the fix might be to use coreavc codec with mplayer, unfortunately mplayer-coreavc-svn from AUR does not compile :S
Thank you

Can't see what was the problem with mplayer but now it plays perfectly

Little troubles with DVB-S2 via MPlayer
Hi,
I use the MPlayer already for quite a while to stream DVB-S and DVB-S2 with it. But for approximately two weeks something changed while watching HD-channels: the video track lags every few seconds; the audio track is quiet normal. However, the non-HD channels hide the problem.
E.g. while watching a German HD-channel, I find following terminal outputs:
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]mmco: unref short failure
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]reference picture missing during reorder
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]Missing reference picture
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]Increasing reorder buffer to 2
h264 @ 0xf2b820]Increasing reorder buffer to 3
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]Increasing reorder buffer to 4
[mpegts @ 0xeb3080]PES packet size mismatch
**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
Specially this message I can't understand, because I'm using a CPU AMD Phenom II X4 955 3,2 GHz, 8 GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 RAM and the graphic card ASUS GTX 460 Top GDDR5 PCIe 1024 MB. But, let's continue with the outputs:
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]concealing 880 DC, 880 AC, 880 MV errors
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]mmco: unref short failure
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]number of reference frames (0+6) exceeds max (5; probably corrupt input), discarding one
[h264 @ 0xf2b820]illegal short term buffer state detected
Furthermore I'm using two HHD WD20EARS, which are connected to RAID1 via 3ware 9650SE-2LP, and the DVB hardware decoder card Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-HD-S2. My desktop environment is KDE SC 4.8.
For starting the DVB-S2 streaming I use szap-s2 -r -p -S 1 -c ~/.mplayer/hdchannels.conf "NAME-OF-THE-HD-CHANNEL" in one terminal and mplayer /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 -demuxer lavf -cache 8192 in a second terminal.
I just mention all this stuff because I've absolutly no idea, what could be the reason. Before this troubles started, two weeks ago, everything worked flawlessly. Checking the /etc/log/pacman.log I can find out, that the Linux kernel was upgraded from 3.2.6-2 to 3.2.7-1 on 24th February. I'm not sure, but maybe since that time these failures appears. Presently I'm using Linux 3.2.8-1.
Has anyone an idea what might just be the cause? (Perhaps it could be a option to try the LTS-kernel?)
Last edited by maik-hro (2012-04-13 10:39:59)So, today I just made some small tests. First of all I tried to start a HD-channel with WinTV7 on Windows 7: The channel was streamed correctly for almost one minute and than it was lost - and I had no possibilty to get it back.
After that I tried again to start the same HD-channel on Linux. I apologize in advance to the large amount of text but following is the terminal output of the first minute (finally canceled by STRG + C):

**** Your system is too SLOW to play this! ****
Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
- Try -ao sdl or use the OSS emulation of ALSA.
- Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
- Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
- Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try some of the lavdopts,
e.g. -vfm ffmpeg -lavdopts lowres=1:fast:skiploopfilter=all.
- Broken file
- Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
- Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
- Try -nocache.

I will not get rid of the feeling that it might actually be due to faulty input signals. May something's wrong with the satellite system (LNB, multi switch, something else)? -
Greetings everyone,
I am experiencing some weird behavior while using External Subtitles, e.g. Playing an AVI file with PS3MediaServer works fine but playing the very same AVI file with external subtitles gives me the video with subtitles and no sound.
My Server configuration is as follows :
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
RAM :2048 Mo
OS : Archlinux 2.6.37-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 8 08:34:35 CET 2011 x86_64
Target : Playstation 3 Slim, firmware 3.60
Here are the various Sofware versions I use :
PMS version I am using is PS3 Media Server 1.21.0 (built from AUR, PKG: pms-svn)
Java version is Java: 1.6.0_22-Sun Microsystems Inc.
MPlayer version is "MPlayer SVN-r32792-4.5.2 (C) 2000-2011 MPlayer Team" and so is "MEncoder SVN-r32792-4.5.2 (C) 2000-2011 MPlayer Team"
TSMuxer version is "1.10.6-10"
FFMpeg version is "FFmpeg version git-2611e52"
The network configuration of the server is : 192.168.0.20, netmask 255.255.255.0 ; 100MBits Full Duplex (Wired)
The network configuration of the Playstation 3 is : 192.168.0.15, netmask 255.255.255.0 ; Auto (Wired, no WiFi !)
Both are linked on a 100MBits Switch : Playstation 3 <--> Switch 100 Mbits <--> PS3 Media Server

So, obviously here, the only thing which changes from before was that, this time, the PS3 Media Server did a transcode/remux of the file (for the subtitles to be streamed)

This file is well played by PS3 Media Server.
I am quite confused with this issue ; did anyone experienced the same thing ?
Best Regards,Having the same problem. I'm watching all of my movies without subs now, because transcoding kills the 5.1 audio (no problems with 2 channel audio). A workaround is posted in the comments of the pms-svn package.
I will post the URL to this thread to another thread with probably the same problem (mplayer/x264). I have not yet seen a real solution to this, and I'm not really familiar with the bugzilla's from both projects.
Other threads with similar problems:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=112219 (devede also uses mplayer and x264)
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/22654 (related bug in Archlinux)
http://bugzilla.mplayerhq.hu/show_bug.cgi?id=1865 (related bug in mplayer)
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=115165 (this thread)
Another workaround might be to trick pms into using ffmpeg or vlc rather than mencoder. I'm also streaming to a ps3 - I didn't try it, but it could be as easy as temporarily changing settings inside the profile for a ps3-client.

Running mplayer at boot with systemctl. fails with alsa-lib error
I am running Arch ARM on a raspberry pi and would like to use it as a headless music player.
I am trying to run mplayer in slave mode at start up and have in read from a fifo pipe which I could write to over SSH.
I have written this mplayer.service file:
[Unit]
Description='mplayer service'
[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/tmux new-session -d -s mplayer 'mplayer -idle -input file=/systemdservice/mplayerfifo /systemdservice/1.mp3 &> /systemdservice/mplayererror.log'
User=user
Type=forking
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

mplayer starts within a tmux window but I don't get any sound and have to stop mplayer from within tmux with CTRL+C which ends the process.
interestingly when as user I run:
/usr/bin/tmux new-session -d -s mplayer 'mplayer -idle -input file=/systemdservice/mplayerfifo /systemdservice/1.mp3 &> /systemdservice/mplayererror.log'
it works perfectly.
If in mplayer.service I change the user to root it also works perfectly.
user is a member of audio group.
I am confused as to what is causing this problem which appears due to a limit of users audio group privilages when a process is started via systemd.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Last edited by epoynton (2013-10-30 21:44:43)Have you tried setting the audio output driver for mplayer explicitly? See:
mplayer -ao help
I would try
-ao alsa
ALSA doesn't use /dev/dsp anymore I don't think. On a Pi you will also need to make sure the mixer is set with amixer like:
amixer cset #
You can use
aplay -l
to see the available device IDs etc.
Hope this helps.

Mplayer with caca video output "blinks"
When I attempt to watch a video in mplayer with caca, the output (in xterm) seems to "blink" or "tear".
Here is the output of running it:

.avi files and subtitle drag&drop
Is there any video player that can play .avi files and also support drag&drop subtitles? I tried Perian with Quick time and now it plays .avi files perfectly. However still can't drag the subtitles to Quicktime screen. Also I tried Miro and VLC Player. They both lack of 'drag&drop subtitle' function.
I'm new to mac, only 3 days. Maybe there is a trick to do that drag&drop thing. Any help?use Mplayer from appstore and its free..:)

MEncoder: DVD to avi with subtitles results in screen flicker
I'm trying to make an avi-file using mencoder with subtitles. Playing the DVD, or the VOB-file in mplayer works and encoding it without subs in mencoder works, but as soon as I include the subs, the avi-movie starts to flicker like crazy after the first subtitle appears.
The command I use to encode.
mencoder dvd://1 \
-ss 00:10:00 -endpos 00:01:00 \
-oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=96:vol=3 \
-ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:cmp=2:subcmp=2:autoaspect \
-vf crop=704:544:8:16 \
-sid 5 -aid 130 \
-o movie.avi
I've tried this on several movies, and the same result on all of them, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.I've tried using xvid (before I ran into the subtitle-trouble), but found it was a bit slower, (maybe because the default bit rate was higher?), and most of the mencoder tutorials talked about using lavc with mpeg4; plus x264 was too slow, on my 1 GHz machine when I tried it.
The important thing is that I can play it on my (rather cheap) DVD-player, and include the subtitle in the video ("hard code it"), since my dvd-player can't read .srt or .sub-files, and I don't want to watch my backed up movies from the computer, but from the DVD-player, just as I would I do with the originals.
At first I assumed the trouble had to do with the encryption of the discs, but since it works without subs, I assume these are the culprits. I'm new at using mencoder, so I assumed I was missing something, and google just tells me a lot of people are having problems with "motion flicker" but I could not find anything related to subs.
Are you suggesting I do something like:
-ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=-700000 \
instead? -

Playing it as root produced the same result.

Thank you for your help, but I have also tried the scale option, both as scale=1366:768 and scale=1366:-3, which produced the same result as without scaling. As you can readily see, the essential problem is that mplayer is being refused access to /dev/fb0. Here is mp.log when using

Writing to mplayer's stdin from bash script.
I was just fulling with some bash script in order to automate the listening of my favorite radio stations via mplayer and a bash script. Going through the mplayers manual I saw the option -slave.
-slave
This option switches on slave mode. This is intended for use of MPlayer as a backend to other programs. Instead of intercepting keyboard events, MPlayer will read simplistic command lines from its stdin. The section SLAVE MODE PROTOCOL explains the syntax.
At first I thought "ok, easy". I made some tries like "mplayer -slave -quiet .... < /tmp/stdin &" and then something like "echo -e 'mute' > /tmp/stdin" but it wouldn't work.
Is it possible to send a process to the background inside a bash script and then write to it's stdin?
SLAVE MODE PROTOCOL
If the -slave option is given, playback is controlled by a line-based protocol. Each line must contain one command otherwise one of the following tokens:
Commands
seek <value> [type=<0/:1/:2>]

I've written some applications that do just what you are trying to do ( http://github.com/trapd00r/rmcd and http://github.com/trapd00r/RPD ), if you need inspiration.
As for the backgrounding - you want to make a 'daemon', to detach from the running shell. See man fork, man 3 setsid and man 3 wait / man 3 waitpid (or my daemonize() function). -
Hello All,
I use mplayer-vaapi (with intel i7/hd4000) and can't figure out how to configure the osd settings properly.
If ass is disabled the subtitle fonts look like below. If ass is enabled the subtitle fonts are OK, but the OSD message fonts ares still ugly:
Thanks for your help!I'm using vanilla mplayer though, because according to mpv mplayer2 development is slow, and is not merging new stuff from mplayer, so no mplayer2 for me. I may try mpv if it were in the repos... The whole mplayer fork thing sounds like bikeshedding to me, after all...
The mplayer fork situation is indeed funny, but I won't comment about that further.
I don't know the details, but I get the feeling VDPAU / VA-API can both be each other's backend? So they're like competing to be the most widely adopted interface or something?
VDPAU was Nvidia's implementation of video acceleration API, while VAAPI is freedesktop's. So basically vdpau-vaapi implements VDPAU interface to the application, but in reality uses the VAAPI interface behind these functions AKA wrapper of sort. I have no experience with any of these API's, but I think I've heard things about VDPAU being nicer to develop for.
I installed libvdpau-va-gl and created executable /etc/profile.d/vdpau_vaapi.sh, but the processor usage with mpv -vo=vdpau was very high (~40-50%) compared to mplayer-vaapi ~3-4%.
I don't use HW decoding myself for various reasons and don't have VA-API enabled GPU, but that doesn't sound right indeed.
You might have more luck asking in the thread above. -

Playing subtitles on Quicktime
Hi I am trying to play a foreign film which has a subtitle file in a separate folder. How can I add this to the film using Quicktime?
The file is an .avi, I am using the Perian plugin to play it on Quicktime. When I try and open the subtitle file on its own, MPlayer OS X 2 launches and that is useless.
Please help, I am trying to watch this good Korean movie....Thank you!You only need the "codec" used to create the file to play it back using QuickTime Player.
Open the "Movie Info" window (open the file with QT Player) Control-i
Do a Google search for a Windows compatible codec, download and install it.
Restart the QuickTime Player for these newly installed codecs to be found.
