MPro, 10.7.5 mouse/keyboard intermittently become unresponsive

I am running OS 10.7.5 on a 2009 Mac Pro and recently the mouse started to intermittently become unresponsive. I usually can fix this by conecting the mouse to a different usb port but last time it happened this didn't work and I also lost the keyboard. I switched both mouse and keyboard and problem persisted, even when moving to different usb ports.  After several hard reboots the mouse and keyboard came back and has been working since. I know the second mouse and keyboard are good and I am able to ptint from all the usb ports on the Mac Pro so I son't think it's a hardware problem. Could this be some kind of driver conflict? There are two canon usb printer drivers installed and two network printers )Lexmark and Brother). I have been running software update regularly. No other problems and I do regular disk maintenance (Diskwarrior). There are two SSDs and two hard drives installed, 32 GB ram. No problems with any hardware that I know of. Could a memory error? Thanks in advance for any ideas as to cause or insights into tracking it down appreciated.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Wireless mouse/keyboard intermittent dis-connects

In the last three days, I have looked at over 20 different posts regarding wireless mouse/keyboard disconnect problems. Thew fixes ranged all over the board and NONE fixed it. And, none of these problems matched mine exactly, except for one other. I too, have two iMacs and this problem has over the last few days gotten increasingly worse and irritating. Regardless of what you're doing, whether it is actual productive work, or playing a stupid game on your computer, when your mouse quits responding, and the graphic flashed on the screen "MOUSE DISCONNECTED", it irritates.
I think a senior apple tech finally pin-pointed the problem, at least for my two systems. It has nothing at all to do with Bluetooth or Wireless networking. I tried ALL of those fixes including resetting the SMC. None fixed it.
Here is what the tech had me do. Under System Preferences > Users & Groups > My Login, I then clicked on "Login items. I was astounded to see a list that exceeded the size of the window of "startup" programs that have been installed from iTunes Helper, to Dropbox to blah, blah, blah. You name it. He had me remove ALL of them except iTunes Helper. one item "Connect service (all users) could not be removed. However, as we later discussed, the specific item the I believe to be the culprit was "Bittorrent". I've forgotten what I downloaded that used that as the download agent, but in the future, I shall NEVER AGAIN use it for ANY reason. I also removed from the applications area, some non-used programs (that probably weren't the problem, but...), emptied the trash, re-booted and have not had the problem since. I want to stress here, that if your problem is actually Bluetooth or Wireless network related, this will not fix it. However, my mouse had gotten really molassesy in that when I would try to quickly move from one spot to another on the screen, it took some time to catch up, as if something else had control. That's what I think Bittorrent or someone trying to share one of my files was causing. I don't share my files. Period. I didn't realize that it could be subverted to that use of I wouldn't have ever used it in the first place.
Anyway, neither one of my iMacs has exhibited ANY of the former symptoms since clearing that list on each system. Turns out, my second iMac also had Bittorrent in the list. That's about the only thing the two have in common besides Yosemite 10.10.3. Maybe this will help, maybe it won't. I sure hope it does. Forums like this one are extremely helpful to me.

I had the same problem... didn't find anything useful in the forums.  Just on a whim, I went to the
Control Panel | Device Manager | Universal Serial Bus Controllers
For each "Hub", right click and select "properties"
On each properties page, select "Power Management" tab
On each power management tab "uncheck" the "Allow the computer to turn off..."
I did this for the Generic USB Hubs, the USB Root Hubs, and the Reneasas...Hub.   After that was completed, all USB ports started working immediately.  So far, they are staying working but it has only been an hour or so.   Will report back if this doesn't stick.    Also, there may be a more elegant solution... but this works for now.

  • My aluminum keyboard is becoming unresponsive.

Recently, my keyboard for my Mac Pro 1,1 has randomly become unresponsive.  Disconnecting and reconnecting it resolves the problem for several minutes, then it becomes unresponsive again.  This started occurring a couple of days ago, but has never happened before.  Nothing configuration wise has changed.  I've already performed a disk/permission verification and repair with no success.  Any suggestions would be greatly apprecicated.

Linc, I did some testing and verified this only occurs when plugging in my iPhone 4 - the keyboard will intermittently die out and eventually become unavailable.  Unplugging the iPhone solves the problem.  Did Apple not supply enough power to the USB system to charge my iPhone and use a keyboard at the same time?  Those are the only two devices connected...

  • X61 Keyboard buttons becoming unresponsive

Hi, when I press either of the buttons above the left and right scroll buttons, the keyboard (excluding the windows button and CTRL ALT DEL) becomes unresponsive. Does anyone know how I can reverse this - and what are these buttons for? The buttons have a rectangle with left or right corner folded over. Thanks John

  • My trackpad and keyboard randomly become unresponsive on MBP Retina

I just got my Macbook Pro with Retina a week ago. Its the newest model that just came out the week I got it. Its a 13 Inch. I noticed when I am using it, the trackpad and kayboard randomly become unresponsive for sometime. I have to close it and wait for it to start working again. Do you have any idea what the problem might be. Should I contact Apple?

I went through this with my old Late 2008 Macbook Uni when I installed Kingston Value RAM.
Take your new RAM out - install your old RAM back - do a PRAM reset and see if your keyboard and trackpad are working again.
Once that's done - turn your Macbook off - install the new RAM - if keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive again - install different brand of RAM.
I ended up intalling Crucial RAM in mine.
    Good luck.

  • Wired USB mouse freezing intermittently, becoming more frequent

I have an old Mac running Snow Leopard.  I have been having an intermittent problem with the USB wired mouse freezing.  However, the frequency of occurance is increasing to the point where it has moved beyond occasional annoyance to multiple times a day problem.  The keyboard still works but it requires a Crash reboot into safe mode to get the mouse working again.  Changing to a different brand mouse doesn't help.  Repairing disk permissions doesn't help.  Turning off the energy savers doesn't help.  Doesn't seem to matter whether bootcamp is running or not.  Doesn't seem to matter whether VMWare is running or not.  Occurs with more frequency when camera is hooked up to the USB, but only increases the occurance rate.  It still freezes when the camera isn't hooked up.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Keyboard gradually becomes unresponsive

Hey. I've noticed a kind of odd problem on my MacBook (2.16 GHz, running 10.4.10, two weeks old, clean installs of software). After use for a few hours, put to sleep and woken up, the keyboard becomes progressively ignored. I usually notice it first with the command key - I'm using it mostly for web surfing, so I'm not purely entering text, more frequently shifting between apps. I lose the ability to do a Cmd-H, and in a short while can no longer enter text.
Anyone had this problem? Any suggestions?

    I figured it out!
I keep hitting the Num Lock key, and then all goes to ****.
Still have no clue what the Num Lock key actually does...

  • Help! my GS3 keyboard randomly becomes unresponsive

It's fine for days or weeks then randomly locks up...either the keyboard doesn't even appear or its just unresponsive. I've googled the topic but seems like i'm all alone with this one. Does anybody have a solution? I've downloaded another keyboard app which works right now but the return and menu buttons also act up periodically.

        Hi RJBoud
That's a very odd situation. Let's look into this together. The issue may be caused by a third party application. Please try powering the device in safe mode and retest. Here's how:http://bit.ly/Wvg2zd
Please let me know if the issue persists. I would be happy to further troubleshoot.

  • Xserve 10.5.8 Becoming Unresponsive

I've been running an Xserve relatively smoothly for a few years now. A few months ago, the Xserve became unresponsive and after a reboot it seemed that Kerberos had stopped. Since this moment the Xserve will intermittently become unresponsive in which case it needs to be restarted. Typically, this will happen once or twice a day.
By "unresponsive" I mean that any attempt to connect via ssh or sftp fails, cron jobs fail to run, and attempting to launch any application from the server itself results in the application crashing immediately.
While the Xserve is unresponsive, DHCP, Apache, and all port forwarding seem to work fine - most of the time.
Nothing stands out to me in the system log, and more than anything I wanted to see if anyone has experienced similar behavior and a potential fix.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No its not, sorry I forgot to add that. Nothing is locked I have monitor keyboard and mouse hooked up all of which work fine when booting from the old system drive, just the cloned hdd wont boot, however system prefs says its bootable and will allow me to select it as the startup disk. 250GB SATA2 HDD GUID partition map 1 partition total cloned through disk utility's Restore function.

  • Intermittent problems: unresponsive keyboard, mouse, USB, etc.

In the last couple weeks I have often been experiencing a wide range of symptoms - wondering if anyone has seen similar or if there is some troubleshooting routine to try. Sometimes, like now, the machine runs fine. When something goes wrong, most commonly the keyboard and mouse will simply stop responding (this includes USB keyboard and mouse as well as the internal keyboard and trackpad), although the display still works and anything running continues to work so I know the machine isn't totally locked up. Sometimes everything freezes up: mouse, keyboard and OS. Another thing that happens sometime is audio playback will not switch from the internal speakers to headphones when an 1/8" phone plug is inserted, audio continues to play through internal speakers. Any one of these problems can be solved by powering off and restarting (which seems to take a really long time usually). It went an entire week without problems but now they are appearing again. Any chance these problems are related? Any idea how to narrow down the cause? thanks for any advice. Dan

I think I figured it out and wanted to record the answer here in the event that anyone else encounters similar symptoms. It seems the culprit was some bad RAM. I've got two sticks and experimented with using just one or both in various slots. Although the available memtest software did not detect any problems, my system has been stable by operating without one of the sticks for quite a while now. Thanks to everyone who wasn't able to solve this problem but at least took a look.

    Problems:
-laptop's (dell xps 15z) keyboard and mouse not working
    -X broken
I am really stumped here and looking for any help / direction. I am running out of questions to ask, and would appreciate any feedback.
    What I have tried:
    -creating a new modprobe.conf,
    -merging rc.conf.pacnew,
-downgrading to my previous udev, mkinitcpio, and module-init-tools, using the packages found in cache. remade init with
    mkinitcpio -p linux
and keyboard and mouse still did not work
    -merged locale.conf.pacnew
    -merged pacman.conf.pacnew
-traversed almost all of the logs multiple times (have not found a silver bullet, but not positive on what Im looking for..)
Below I have included some notes, my relevant (dates) pacman.log, and what I pulled from dmesg that seemed related to me.

I'm glad that fixed your keyboard.
Good idea about the wiki page. If/when I have time I will add something. Feel free to do so if you have some.
I've not had the computer for long, however the core install boots and works fine, but after updating the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, so unfortunately from my perspective, one of the updates in the past 4 or 5 months broke it! However, though I've not tried any combinations of boot parameters, the vast majority of live CDs won't even boot without acpi=off (or presumably, only acpi=noirq is actually needed, looking at your tests) so it doesn't look to be Arch specific.
For your X problems, are you using a DE or WM, and how are you logging in? If you can disable the login manager (if present) and start an X session with startx, with say only exec xterm in your ~/.xinitrc that might help pinpoint the issue. If that works, it will unlikely be an X issue, more one of your DE/WM.

  • Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

    Folks,
I have exacly same sympton described here on my 5 day old 15 inc macbook pro.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad may become unresponsive
Has anone tried to apply this patch on 15 inc ?
    Kind Regards,
    Neroshige

The patch is only for MBP late 2013 13 inch. 15 inch is not able to install this patch
    I'm facing this problem intermittently.
When my keyboard & trackpad went unresponsive, I plug in my USB keyboard and the keyboard & trackpad went back normal.
I search the web and somebody highlight it may due to connector to keyboard/trackpad appear to be curled.
Not sure is hardware problem or software bug...

  • Sometimes my keyboard becomes unresponsive when using Photoshop CS6, & I have to restart

Since I upgraded to Photoshop CS6, I've found that every once in a while the keyboard becomes unresponsive.  I can't tell whether anything specific that I'm doing triggers it, but I'll be editing an image and will press a shortcut key and find it doesn't work. It doesn't happen when I first open up an image, but usually after I've been working for a while. As far as I can tell (it's pretty random) it seems to happen when I'm using a tool to apply an effect to an image, like this last time it happened when I'd been using the Spot Healing Brush repeatedly on a photograph. (Of course that could be correlation without causality, since I'm a big fan of the Spot Healing Brush and tend to use it quite a bit whenever I'm editing photos). Note that the modifier keys still function, but all of the letter and number keys are unresponsive.
Sometimes - and lately it seems like it happens always, there's a sound associated with the shut off.  It's possible that the times I didn't hear the sound I had my speakers off.  It's a brief clicking noise - and I don't think it's any of the built-in alert sounds on my Mac, since I just listened to all of them and I recall this sound being different - but the sound is definitely coming from my speakers and is not a mechanical sound from the machine.  I have no idea what might be causing this. I saw someone complaining of this a couple of years ago, who thought it might have to do with a Wacom tablet. I own one, but don't always use it, and this happens even when I'm not using it.  The only way I've found to get my keyboard responding again is to shut down Photoshop and restart.
I'm on a Macbook Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, with 8GB Ram; I'm on OS X 10.7.4 (not quite ready to upgrade to Mountain Lion).

Okay - it looks like I've solved my own problem after a few hours searching for related problems on the web.  It's not a problem with Photoshop but with Mac OS X.  The default "Universal Access" mouse and trackpad preferences were set to "Press the Option Key five times to turn Mouse Keys On or Off." So when I use a tool that I'm modifying with the option key, and I use it repeatedly five times in a row, I hear the clicking sound that means turn on "Mouse Keys" (and turn off the regular keys). Turn off that option, and the problem is solved!

  • Macbook Pro Retina Mouse/Keyboard freeze

    Hi there,
I have a 2013 macbook pro retina that's less than a month old. I have experienced a number of trackpad/mousepad freeze issues while using the computer. They occurred in close succession while using 10.93. I update to 10.94 and had not experienced the problem again since then(a week or more) but today it crashed. this is a big problem as i am a dj and use this laptop to play live gigs. I was hoping that you could help me isolate the problem. What happens is I will be working away and suddenly the mouse will freeze and the computer will become unresponsive, the keyboard doesn't work except for the power button.... also, the desktop background disappears upon forced restart.... any ideas? what may be causing this? Thanks in advance, Richard

If your machine is less than a month old, you should use your warranty and call AppleCare (you have 90 days of phone support) or take your machine back to the Apple Store (make an appointment with the Genius Bar first) and let them deal with the issue.
If yours is the 13" model, there is a thread on here (somewhere) about trackpad and keyboard failures when also using Bluetooth, I think (don't quote me on that - I don't have the affected machines so I don't follow the thread too closely).
But I do believe that Apple is aware of the issue and had 'fixed' it in either a patch preceding 10.9.4 or in 10.9.4 itself.
    Give them a call...
    Clinton

  • Mouse/keyboard non-responsive, system locks up

I have a Touchsmart IQ816.  At times the wireless keyboard and mouse become unresponsive and the system seems to lock up.  I can see the blue light that comes one when I type or move the mouse is on solid and does not turn off.  The touchscreen beeps like I am touching it but nothing happens on the screen.
I am not sure if the lock up is the wireless reciever locked up and nothing works on the screen because there is no input, or if the system itself is locking up.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you all very much for your time.
