.mpv ends up darker after imported into DVDSP, why?

Hello All,
I'm using Squeeze to compress my uncompressed .mov files into mpeg2. After a lot of tweaking the Sorenson Squeeze settings, I get a file about 95% accurate in comparison with my source. I them import the .mpv into DVDSP. When viewed in simulator, the video is clearly darker, and has gained a bit of contrast.
Has anyone else encountered this? Are there any fixes, or do I have to adjust Sorenson Squeeze to accommodate for the import into DVDSP?
Thanks.

I haven't yet burned it to disc, but that is obviously the next step. I was just comparing everything to make sure something didn't slip by, and need to be corrected later. My monitor is calibrated for photo work, but I doubt that calibration also applies for video. Can you suggest software for video calibration?
Yes, Squeeze generally wreaks some kind of havoc, right out of the gate, so I end up tweaking quite a few things.
One of the biggest problems I've found is that the images are very slow moving, morphing, color sequences, and going from an uncompressed 100 gig file to 2 gig mpeg2 is just a nasty thing to do.

  • Photos appear dark after importing into iPhoto

I am having an issue importing photos into iPhoto 6. When I download photos from my digital camera (Canon Rebel XTi) they view perfectly in Preview.app. Once I import them into iPhoto they all appear dark, however I can open the photo file from the iPhoto directory with Preview.app or even Photoshop and they appear fine. Any suggestions?
    Intel iMac 20" 2.16 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The images appear to be darkened as if they were taken in low light or overly saturated colors in iPhoto only. I can open them in Photoshop or Preview.app and they look as they should. The camera is using sRGB Profile. The option for iPhoto to add a ColorSync profile is off. I get the same results with this features on or off.

  • Image Corrupted After Import into LR4?

Several times now I've imported images into LR4 from my External HD and and a few the files are corrupted. (See attached image)
I realize that LR is not suppose to do anything to the files on the disk when importing... but I've checked the RAW images from back-ups and they are not corrupted prior to import into LR. AFTER import into LR the actual file (on the external HD) IS corrupted in both LR and then on the External HD.
My workflow has been to copy files from my CF  Card to the External HD (Western Digital 3 TB) ino the appropriate file... then go to LR4 and import.
Can anyone suggest what the problem is?  I replaced the Card Reader... same problem occurs.  I've checked numerous RAW files in Bridge... none are shown as corrupted (prior to LR4 import)

The corruption may or may not be “sudden”.  If things look ok in Library then it happened sometime between initial preview building during import and you’re viewing the image in Develop.   If the last place things looked ok was in the Import thumbnail grid, then that is only showing the camera-embedded previews, so the images may be corrupted on the card, already.
The most important thing is to determine what the problem is, where the corruption comes from, so you can fix it.  It could be the camera, the card, the camera-to-computer USB cable, the card-reader, the usb-slot, the computer-memory, the computer hard-drive, the USB-drivers, LR, itself, or some other software, like Microsoft Security Essentials has caused problems for some people in the past, although why is not really understood.
If the corruption is still occurring with the latest images, then you can experiment by changing one or more of the components mention above, and see if things are ok or still corrupted.
As far as recovery, if part of the image data is missing or zeroed out overwritten with random junk, there’s no way to get that bad data, back, from the existing file because the files, themselves, only have one copy of the data.
The three things I can think of to suggest are:
    1)      If the preview in Library doesn’t show the corruption then there are ways to retrieve the previews from the LR preview cache as JPGs.  This isn’t the same as the RAW data, but is better than nothing.
    2)      If the camera-embedded preview has not been damaged—it is typically stored in front of the raw data so depending on where the damage is, it could be intact, then there are ways to extract the camera-embedded preview from the raw file, which again is better than nothing.
    3)      The best thing is if you have a backup of the images that don’t show the corruption, either because the images are still on the card, or because you made a backup during import and the corruption happened sometime after import, then you could copy those over the top of the corrupted files and be ok.
These things may or may not be possible depending on your situation, though.  If you don’t have any backups that are ok, and LR’s previews are bad, and the in-camera preview is tiny or also damaged, then you’ll entirely out of luck for those images.  And things maybe really bad if it’s the hard-drive that’s failing and you have no backups of your images, there, either.  It is important to determine what is wrong, and with the least effect on the images that are still good.

  • All of a sudden my RAW (Nikon D7100) files are dark after importing

Could anyone tell me why all of a sudden my NEF files from my Nikon D7100 raw files turn dark after importing them to Lightroom 4.4? I did use Dactive lighting setting in camera...is this why? Is there anyway to stop this from happening? THanks!

    I can't argue with that.

That would be truer if stated thusly:
Having ADL on will make for darker initial rendering in Lightroom and reveal non-optimal ADL setting as under-exposed images.
However (and contrary to popular belief), that does NOT mean there is no value using ADL in conjunction with Lightroom for post-processing - quite the contrary: there are ALL the same benefits as when using ADL in conjunction with NX2, *except* that the compensations are applied automatically in NX2, and non-optimal setting manifests as a slight reduction in shadow image quality and not as under-exposed images when using NX2 instead of Lightroom for post-processing.

  • Different colors after imported into LR3

I really i do not know what is this problem related to, but after I imported pitures into lightroom , it makae some modification and change the color of the picture.
    Here are the examples:
The picture rendered by CDPP, looks as i wanted the picture to look like (also looks like this in the camera), while the one in LR modified the color, I have check the setting in the importer and i do not apply any preset. What am i am doing wrong? or there is a known problem in LR? Note: the render preview option is minimal.
The other issue i have. is when i shoot a picture with a high iso it ended up in LR with a red color. if needed i can post some exmaples as well.
    Thanks for the help.

    Helena,
    You're right.
    @Cafu_co,
Lightroom won't automatically match your camera settings, and it never will.
What you can do is to edit a file in Lightroom so it approximates the starting point that you'd like to have, and then make that the default change to the image that you're presented with after importing. You set the default in the Develop Module: hold down the Alt/Opt key and the button on the lower right of the window changes to Set Defaults... Press it.
One of the things that you'll want to investigate during that process is the Profile setting in the Camera Calibration panel. Most Canon models have profiles available that mimic your picture styles that can be set in the camera.

  • H.264 will not import into DVDSP?

So I have been searching several discussion forums and the question I have seems to pop up in each of them, but is never answered???
Simply put, I have a FCP 6 project sequence that is 720p24frame which is an editing timebase of 59.94 with an aspect ratio of 960by720.
This is an 8.5 minute piece so I know that it will fit onto a regular DVD-R.
So I go through compressor and compress it into both an MPEG2 and H.264 - each at an HD bit rate.
Then I set up an HD project in DVDSP and try to import the two. The MPEG goes in fine and burns with no problems. My BlueRay/HDDVD combo player is on its way in the mail so I can't test it, but it will not play in my SD DVD player. Then I try to import the H.264 - It states something to the effect of not a compatible format....
That is my question - Why will the H.264 not import into an HDDVD project in DVDSP - all of the settings are correct from the initial edit - through compressor - through DVDSP.
Thank you for anyone who can help - we have a large festival coming up that has the option of 35mm or HDDVDs (we cannot afford a print).

    So...this issue is somewhat solved.
I have done several exports using the provided H.264 presets then tweaking them each to my own set specifics. There are four places in the formats sections of compressor that have H.264 as a codec - one of these is for iPod and web so I disregarded that one completely.
I always applied the same settings as to have a control base when doing this experiement - I haven't done a science project in probably 15 years. I also pushed the bit-rates to the highest level.
After many hours in and out of compressor and DVDSP, I found only one of of the presets loaded properly into DVDSP - the 60min under HDDVD H.264 preset (altered to my higher bit-rate)
I am still waiting on my player to try it out, but it did burn fine. This is all so strange since all of my own settings (bit-rate) and other data was constant.
Oh well...at least I've got one test completely burnt.

  • After import into iPhoto, originals disappear and only thumbnails remain

After importing photos into iPhoto, working on them and then closing iPhoto, when reopening iPhoto only the thumbnails remain and can't find the originals anywhere on the computer via a Spotlight. Ran Disk Utility and no problems found on HD. Have rebuilt the iPhoto Library. This has happened on multiple occasions.

Here's a little more background on this problem. JPGs originally were imported from a CD and had camera given filenames, like 20110428-DSC_0118.jpg. After the import into iPhoto the application was closed. The next day when iPhoto was opened and any of the just imported photos doubled click on, a dialog box similar to this appeared that changed with the different file names:
I did a little research and discovered that the camera that had given filenames were identical to those by a different group of photos from a different camera that already resided in the iPhoto Library! So I imported them again from the CD except this time I used the utility, Better Finder Renamer 8, to batch change the names to something completely different, like Mary_Spring_2011_Visit_001.jpg, and so on. Those were imported into iPhoto. iPhoto was closed and opened and everything was OK. The next day iPhoto was opened and the newly imported photos when double clicked, the same exact dialog box as above opened and the only newly named photos that could be found were the thumbnails. None of the original full-res images can be found doing a Spotlight search of the entire computer. So to answer your second question the same dialog box shows up. I'm confounded as to where they are going. Plus, why would the original filename that was changed be showing up in the dialog box?? That is why Disk Utility was run to see if there was any directory damage. But no problems were found.

  • Titles off center after import into FCE

I seem to always have to adjust the position of my titles after importing them into FCE because they are off center. They are centered in LT and I have tried changing the project properties to different video formats, but they continue to be off to one side after import. This occurs both when I import the .ipr file into FCE and when I render the movie and import it as a .mov file. Any suggestions on how to have the titles show up where I designed them in LT?

I am not sure if they are always off the same number of pixels, but they do always seem below center and off to the right. Could it be that I am using the incorrect project preferences? I am using Captured DV footage in FCE and I have tried both NTSC DV 3:2 and NTSC 4:3 and I still seem to have the problem.

  • Itunes does not play after importing into timeline

I have looked at similar topics in this discussion forum but still unable to get the answers.Basically the problem is that after importing (purchased) itunes(6) music(and it imports OK)there is no music when played back in the time line.In the imovie palette (audio view) the itunes music plays normally.CD is also greyed out even if there is a CD in the CD drive,so obviously CD tracks cannot be played.Itunes 'by itself' plays normally and CD is also recognised.Voice overs thru microphone, original audio from footage also plays normally. All boxes ticked on the right/computer volume set to high etc so setting seems allright.I am using formac studio to import analogue footage and can hear the original sound when importing.Using imovie 3.03 on ibook.this may/maynot be relevant-on the G3 imac in imovie(3.03)the itunes/CD tracks imports and plays on the timeline, however the original footage soundtrack sounds like gunfire from a machine gun.It is normal with the imported itunes soundtrack switched off.

Hi rav - are you sure that if you have a CD installed you cannot see its tracks in the Audio Pane? Even though 'Audio CD' is greyed out, the contents of the CD are still there and accessible.
Can you convert the track to mp3 format? iMovie does accept mp3s. Doing so might break the deadlock.

  • Screen Capture Video Loses Quality When Imported Into iMovie - WHY?

I am using screen capture software to make a video of my screen at 1024x768. The video is for a tutorial. I want to use iMove to get things like transitions and such into the movie, and to add text and audio. The problem is that, although the video looks great in QuickTime, it loses quality significanly when I import into iMove. The text on the screen is blurry, and the quality of everything else is terrible as well.
Is this s limitation of iMove? Can screen capture video be imported? Does it only work with DV?
Also, I tried to convert the file to many other formats, from QuickTime to MPEG-4, so it's not the file type.
If anyone can help me out, I've be very grateful.
    Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Your dimensions are getting in the way. iMovie converts your 1024X768 to a DV Stream file that is 720X480.
One workaround would be to set your display resolution smaller. Try 800X600 (if your windows fit that size).
If you're using Snapz Pro you should set your window capture to 640X480. This size will import nicely into iMovie.
An even better way would be to do all of the work using QuickTime Pro. Again a 1024X768 QT.mov file would not fit on the most common display settings used. When you add the QT Player window the controller would be below the screen and not accessible for most users.
800X600 would make a better file (smaller, too). It would still be 4:3 aspect and would also import into iMovie.

  • OIM 11g (11.1.1.5.0) issue with AD connector after importing into new env

    OIM 11g 11.1.1.5.0
I had exported the AD connector from our Dev environment and imported it into Test. When I try to assign the AD resource to a user, provisioning is stuck on the AD Create User adapter, specifically the isADAM Task.
I'm assuming something isn't populated in the IT resource or there is a disconnect in the tables after the import. The IT Resource config looks identical to the Dev env, isADAM = no. The group and org recon jobs run fine and it gets past the server validation task.
If anyone can point me in the right direction to resolve this, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Delete photos after import into iPhoto

Is it possible to delete the photos on the mac after they have been imported to iphoto?

Yes, if you're running a default Managed Library. In that scenario the file are copied into the iPhoto Library on import.
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Video looks terrible after imported into Encore CS3

I have a great looking m2v file (for Blu Ray) that I compressed with Squeeze. After I import it into Encore CS3, it looks poor in preview. The clips starts off with white text on a black background. In preview mode, the text looks aliased or "jagged". I thought this was a preview issue, but it looks just as poor after I burn it to BD-R and play it back on our PS3.
    Encore project specs : 1280 x 720 59.94fps MPEG2
The specs of my m2v file: 1280 x 720 59.94fps av, bitrate is 28000 kbps.
Naturally, our client is getting impatient for an explanation. Any help on solving this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Vince

You should wind up with an encoded asset (your clip) as 1920x1080 m2v which should be automatically created, if you use a BluRay Project and select MPEG2 under the project settings.
Why don't you try that and then burn a BluRay folder and burn the disk with IMGBurn, using a BD-RE disk, so you won't waste money on several BD-R disks?
I'm not sure where the "encore specs of 1280x720" come in.
I'd be interested as to how this comes out.
