MS-6380E Memory Trouble

I am running the Athlon XP 2000+ on the KT3 Ultra-ARU MB with one 512MB Kingston PC2700 ram chip. I ordered another Kingston chip of the exact same specs and I popped it in. Booted the machine, it counted up the 1048576KB of ram, displayed the Windows XP splash, then once that disappeared a blue screen comes up talking about halting the system to prevent damage, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
I have tried booting the system with the new chip alone, all works. I've tried swapping the two modules around in every combination of slots but it just won't boot up with the two chips. I've updated to the latest BIOS (5.x), also tried playing around with the BIOS settings. I reset the BIOS and the system did boot, but the FSB was incorrect at 100mhz instead of 133 so my cpu was way underclocked.
Is it easy to tell if its my board or the chip?
(Sorry if this was answered - I tried searching through all the posts)
More specs

Ok, well im sure i tried this before, but I put in the ram and did safe mode (again) and it worked surprisingly. So then i rebooted regularly, noticing now the SDRAM clock was 266 instead of 333 and CAS Latency = 2 instead of 2.5, and my system booted fine! I checked the successful BIOS DRAM timing settings > first setting: SPD and the SDRAM Freq. ~> HCLK. So i played around with the BIOS to try and get it to run at 333 but it would not boot at that freq. without the BSOD. At one blue screen it mentioned win32k.sys
I dropped from a 333 bus to 266  ;(
If anyone has the same board and similar RAM specs (pc2700, possibly 512 chips) and you are running at 333 can you post your DRAM timing settings.

  • New MBP, and am having memory trouble errors with MS Word 2004

    Hi,
    I know this has been talked about before, but I'm not sure where to post this question. I have a new MBP, with a full version of Word (no previous trial software installed). I have been trying to copy and past basic text files from Yahoo mail, to create a book of emails of sorts. My file size has been approaching my memory capacity (basic setup). Does it not create a swap file and let you keep going if you approach the limits of the onboard memory? I understand it will run a bit slower, but I'm only moving text files and nothing else. Why the proverbial memory/disk full error messages? Does it have anything to do with the software being non universal code?
    Do I need to get rid of temporary files, as Im copying and pasting alot? If so, how?
    Anyone have the same trouble, and have a clear solution? I could also swear my MPB is running alot slower with Word than I would have expected.
    Any help you can give me would b appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    I’ll try to answer your questions briefly without going into too much detail. First of all, I think the error message you are seeing is generated by MS Word and not your operating system. That particular error, and other similar ones, are quite common in Word in particular situations and are the result of a known bug.
    As far as I know, there is no fix, but there are several work-arounds. The bug has to do with the number of temporary files that get created when working with large Word files. As you might guess, the larger your file, the larger the temp files, and they will quickly fill up your existing RAM, which then causes the error that generates the message. You have to delete the temp files---you can do that by saving and closing your file, then restart it. There are some scripts you can run, but that is beyond what I want to get into here (and usually is not necessary).
    The other problem is that by copying and pasting text from Yahoo Mail, you are not pasting simple text---you are pasting all the HTML code, formatting, and everything else that is contained in that text. And Word saves it all, then adds its own formatting and other code---leading to corrupt files sooner or later.
    And then, to make it all worse, if your file is as large as you say it is (close to system memory in size), that is one huge Word file, and Word does not handle really large files very well, especially Word 2004, but all versions of Word, Windows versions included, have trouble with large files.
    Word does in fact run slowly on even the newest MacBook Pros because Word is not yet compiled for the Intel Macs and does not run natively as a universal binary but runs under Rosetta, which translates Word to run on Apple computers running Intel CPUs. If you are working with small files, it isn’t too bad, but big files will slow it down to almost a crawl at times, or it will even stop responding for several seconds between each command.
    You can work around these problems by breaking your file into much smaller ones, save often (and close the file once in while), and save as a text file, rather than as a doc file.
    An alternative is to use another word processor or text editor to save your copied text---there are many that will work as well as or better than Word for what you want to do. Pages is a good alternative----I have to collaborate on Word files every day, and I prefer to work on my MacBook Pro (although I also use Windows-based computers about as frequently, too), and except for the most complex Word files with tables, charts, and pictures, Pages works very well, and you can save the file as a Word document, too, if you need to.
    Hope that answers some of your questions----and always remember….I could be wrong.

  • MSI K9N Neo (AM2) memory troubles

    Hi guys, I just got a new system which is having some issues, and I'd appreciate any suggestions on what could be wrong.
    At first, the system simply crashed during OS boot. A quick test with memtest86 showed 50-60 thousand errors on a single run, so I asked at Corsairs site, got the recommendation to up the voltage to 2.1V. The memory got a whole lot more stable, but still showed a few dozen errors per run.
    So, I proceeded to test the modules one by one, and found them operating well as long as only a single module was inserted (no errors on a 12+ hours run). I moved them around, tried different dimm slots, but as soon as both modules were in, there were errors ranging from a few to several dozen per memtest pass.
    The system specs are:
    MSI K9N Neo (nforce 550 based)
    AMD Athlon64 3500+
    Corsair Value Select 2048MB PC5300 kit (2 1GB dimms, 667 MHz)
    Geforce 6600 video card.
    BIOS settings are defaults (memory timing set from SPD) with memory voltage increased to 2.1 volt as per Corsairs suggestion.
    Any suggestions? Is the MB shot, should I get it exchanged, or could there be some other problem?

    Hi Raider,
    I would not run in dual channel mode until you get at least one stick to run w/o errors in Memtest86. I had a similar problem with different memory but the same MSI K9N MoBo. Sometimes it passed and sometimes it did not. My two problems were (1) power supply, only 350W, so I jumped up to a 500W, and (2) memory timings. The MSI site said the MoBo has trouble with SPD timings. So try moving the mem speed down a whole bunch, like 166Mhz or 133Mhz clocking first. If it passes all mem tests, then move the clock back up and try to look up the memory timings for your memory and type them in manually in your BIOS. For me, I went from 2.5-3-3-8 2T  to  3.0 5-5-8 2T and it ran forever.  From Windows I used CPU-z to see the memory SPD and timings and set it to the lower settings from CPU-z to make it work the first time. This week I am taking back the memory to the store because it won't run at spec.
    Good Luck

  • Memory trouble with 790FX-GD70

    Hi,
    Last Saturday, I bought everything located in my signature. There seems to be a problem with the mainboard and the memory, though.
    I couldn't install Windows 7, without removing some of the memory, XP went fine.
    When running windows, either 7 or XP, with the 8 GB in the pc, it freezes, gives BSOD's, reboots..
    I've done a memtest, with all for memory modules, I get errors. If I only have 3 modules in the board, the memtest runs fine. Every memory module in itself works fine. Every slot on the mainboard in itself works fine..
    I don't know what might be causing the problem. The mainboard should be able to work with 16GB of memory, why would it fail with 8?

    Quote from: Hans on 13-August-09, 01:13:52
    When you install 3 dimms, the memory runs in single-channel mode which is less demanding on the memory controller which is inside the CPU.
    Installing 4 dimms will make all run in dual channel mode which the memory controller cannot handle with 4 dual sided memory dimms. Four single sided dimms can be done. That's why there are 4 dimm slots. And, on top of that, some people seem lucky and can make it work, but they often need to lower clock speed and loosen timings manually.
    Reason for all this: it's simply the limitation of the memory controller in the cpu.
    Thanks for the information, you've taught me quite a bit.
    Quote from: Stu on 13-August-09, 01:46:10
    Both are 32bit? In which case you're wasting your time with 8gb of RAM, as you can only use over 4gb with a 64bit OS and 64bit software. There is no point having more than 4gb if you're only using 32bit OS and software, as the rest is unuseable.
    No, Win7 RC is 64bit.

    Were you doing something with VLC at the same time you were collecting EtreCheck data?  Or does VLC consume resources while idle.  I suspect you were doing something, but I figured I would ask.
    Otherwise I do not see anything obvious, HOWEVER, I am not familiar with all the 3rd party additions you have.
    If there are any you are no longer using, you might remove them.
    You can try booting in Safe Mode (as an experiment).
    <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>
    which will not load the 3rd party additions, however, if you need them to do your work, that would be self defeating.  You still might try booting into Safe Mode, as it will clean out some caches.
    Anyway, if Safe Mode does improve things, then it would point to a 3rd party addition.
    i was thinking of upgrading to latest OS but unsure since i noticed this issue.
    You can create a partition for installing a new version of Mac OS X and then see if the new version works better or worse.  That way you would not have to commit.

  • P965 Platinum - memory troubles

    I completed the following system over the weekend:
    P965 Platinum w/ 1.2 BIOS
    Core 2 Duo E6400
    Corsair Twin 2GB 800MHz 4-4-4-12
    Rosewill 550w PSU
    eVGA 7600GT
    I checked the BIOS and verified that the memory is recognized as 800MHz.  However, it is currently running at 5-5-5-18 timings at 1.9v.  I am able to change the timings to 4-4-4-12, but then the system does not boot (stuck on extended memory test).
    I checked with Corsair, and their documentation states that the 4-4-4-12 timings are achieved at 2.1v.  Unfortunately, the BIOS will not allow me to change the memory voltage.  The number is grayed out.
    How can I fix this?  I installed Duo Core Center to try to adjust it from there, but it will not run...I get the "This application has caused an error and must be closed..." message when I try to start it.  I reinstalled it with the same problem both times.

    First of all, Run a memtest86 session for each memory stick seperately , one of the sticks may be broken ... you never know...
    Quote from: EricT on 20-December-06, 11:08:30
    OK, I adjusted the voltage to 2.1v.  Then I disabled SPD and set the timings to 4-4-4-12.  I rebooted, and it crashed while loading windows.
    Try a little more voltage if the bios allows you to, 2.2 or 2.3Volt - It IS a budget motherboard, and budget boards tend to give less real voltage then what you selected.
    Quote from: EricT on 20-December-06, 11:08:30
    I went back to the BIOS and enabled SPD, leaving the voltage at 2.1V, and CPU-Z is showing the timings as 5-5-5-18 like before.  Frequency 400MHz, 2:3 ratio.  It is also reporting Channels # Single.  This should be dual-channel memory right?
    The SPD tab in CPU-Z tells me that each module has 400 MHz frequency with timings 4-4-4-12.  Now I'm confused.
    Might have something to do with having both sticks in single channel - Since there are 2 memory sticks in one channel it might automatically loosen timings for that channel...
    Quote from: EricT on 20-December-06, 11:08:30
    Another thing, if I put modules in slots 1 and 3, the system hangs at memory initialization.  I can only get it to run if I use slots 1 and 2.  I believe this is why I'm in single channel mode?
    Yes...

    Can someone help me get this memory running optimally?  I spent the extra money to get CAS 4 memory, but apparently I am not getting that performance.
    Core 2 Does not really benefit all that much from tight timings, you are confusing with athlon64 wich like tight timings ...
    http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&articID=472 This article shows that core2 does not really benefit a lot from expensive high end memory.

  • Can't add more than one memory stick

    Hi guys,
    I could really use some help, this is driving me insane for weeks and I can't find any solution among teh interweb or this forum.
    My problem: I've a very instable system : different bsod on win7 start up, infinite reboot, random black screen, freeze...even the bios freeze once.
    My 2cts: Memory trouble. By using various ineffective methods (listed below), the only repetitive pattern I've found is that -> the more memory stick I use, the more instable the system became.
     - With 1 stick I get sometime a stable system (3 days without trouble) but it goes back to infinite loop after a crash
     - With 2 sticks I get a stable windows but freeze after 5-10min of gaming, and infinite loop
     - With 3 sticks I can't get pass windows start up, and infinite loop most of the time
    My current solution: I manage to get these results with by downgrading the memory (otherwise I get bsod on start up or infinite reboot every time even with one stick).
     - EIST and Intel Turbo Boost turn off
     - Ram frequency set to 1066Hz (instead of 1333) -> Funny this parameter seems not to hold, it goes back to 1333
     - Unlink ram configuration: CRate at 2 and 9-9-9-27 (instead of 9-9-9-24) -> not sure because the value on center column is still at 24
     - Vram set between 1.5v and 1.65v (instead of 1.46 in auto)
    Other unsuccessful stuff I've tried:
     - each tests are made with barebone configuration (one HDD, no DVD, etc...)
     - multiple CMOS clearing (all night with jumper)
     - several clean win7 install
     - several tests with each of my 4 ram sticks alone (on DIMM 1)
     - all drivers update
     - return the motherboard to get a new one (the actual is 3 months old)
     - buying 2 more ram sticks
     - BIOS flash with 1.H, 1.G and even the brand new one 1.I !
    My configuration :
    i5 2500K @3.3Gb
    P67A-GD55 (b3)
    GIGABYTE GTX 560 ti
    2x2Gb Crucial DDR3 1333MHz (CT25664BA1339.M8FR)
    2x2Gb GSkill DDR3 1333MHz (F3-10600CL9D-4GBNT)
    SSD HD for system
    Windows 7 64bits PRO sp1
    Corsair TX650
    No fancy keyboard like GR11 (microsoft wireless 10.A)
    Logitech G500 usb mouse
    Any ideas ?? Thanks !

    Sorry! Not going to work, no way, no how!
    Ditch the G.Skill & use just the Crucial. RAM defaults the way it does because of the SPD profiles programmed on the chips. Use either 'Link' or Auto. Set Dram V. to 1.514-1.521v., manually set timings to CR 1, 9 9 9 24.

  • Running out of memory - where do I not free objects?

    Hello there,
    I am analyzing data on an Itanium with 1GB of memory using the JSDK 1.4 (Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2-beta-b19)). I have a lot of memory troubles reading data as small as 120MB and processing it (using the Pattern class and ArrayList or static String array), so I wrote this little program to test the memory:
                   print("Starting memcheck - press key...");
                   int border= 100000;
                   int bCount = border;
                   int limit = 18000000;
                   String tst = new String("Hi, Tester!");
                   System.in.read();
                   print("Key for 1-String-Buffer...");
                   System.in.read();
                   StringBuffer checkSt = new StringBuffer(limit*tst.length());
                   print("1-String-Buffer created. Key for clearance...");
                   System.in.read();
                   checkSt = null;
                   System.gc();
                   print("Key for Strings...");
                   System.in.read();
                   String [] checkS = new String[limit];
                   for (int i=0; i<limit; i++) {
                        checkS[i] = (new String(tst));
                        if (--bCount == 0) {
                             bCount = border;
                             print("Created: "+i+" strings!");
                   print("Strings created. Key for clearance...");
                   System.in.read();
                   checkS = null;
                   System.gc();As I originally thought, this only uses about 800MB with the static String array, 471MB with the StringBuffer, and crashes (out of memory) when being permitted up to 1000MB with ArrayList.
    The odd thing is though, that when I put the part with the static String array after the StringBuffer part, it crashes too (out of memory). So I guess, that I have not fully understood how to free memory in java yet and that I am overlooking something here - can someone please help me? I have already tried for more than a week to fix this problem, but I must be overlooking the obvious...
    According to my math, if I read 100MB, it should at most use 2*100MB+overhead (2* because of Java's internal unicode representation). Where am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

    Double posted,

  • Why does my ipad close apps because of low memory?

    Low memory trouble shooting..

    You are answering your own question actually. If you want to, you can close apps in the recents tray - and while the overwhelming majority of those apps are not actually running, there could be an app that is doing something that could be causing a problem. Close all of your apps and restart.
    Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    You should not have to do this on a regular basis, but try it and see if it helps at all. Then keep an eye on what apps are running when you get the low memory warning and sse if there is maybe a setting or a file associated with that app that you can change - or delete and then see if that helps even more.

  • Best practices for working with large placed bitmap images?

    Hey all,
    I need some advice on the best way to approach building these files. I've been working on some banners that are very large: 3 x 7 feet.
    Each banner has a simple vector graphic treatment at the top and bottom (rectangle with a different colored rule on top, and vector logo) and a small amount of text, just a URL and a headline.The headline is type (not converted to outlines) and usually has some other effect applied to it, say a drop shadow or outer glow. Under these graphics is a full bleed image. The placed images need to be 150ppi at actual size, so they're honking big, sometimes up to 2GB. Once the layouts are approved, they have to go to a vendor for output.
    The Illustrator docs are really large, and I've read in other threads how to combat that (PDF compatibility, raster settings). But even still, does anyone have any insight into the best way to deal with these things? The dimensions are large, and then the images are large, and it just makes for lots of looking at the spinning ball of death...
    If it were me, I'd build them in InDe, but the vector graphics need to be edited for each one, and I so don't like to do that in InDe unless forced. To me, it's still ultimately a page layout app, not a drawing app. (Old school here.)
    FYI, our machines are all MBPs with 8G ram and the latest Intel Core 2 Duo chips, 2.66 and 2.8GHz. If we keep the files local (as opposed to working on the server) it should be fairly zippy... No?
    Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

    You can get into memory trouble with very large placed pdf files. Tiffs too.
    This has to do with the preview, which contains much more information than you need for working with.
    On the other hand if you place EPSs and take care not to turn on overprint preview you can get away with huge files.
    If you do turn on overprint preview your machine will slow down a lot and the file may become totally unmanageable.
    Compare this with to InDesign where you can control the quality of the preview. A hi-res preview will slow you down and most often you don't need it anyway.
    I was working (in Illie) the other day on much larger files than you mention – displays for whole walls – and had some considerable trouble until I reverted to the old EPS format. They say it's dying but it ain't dead yet .

  • Computer just beeps when it's turned on

    My computer screen went black: My screen goes black every time I turn it on I tried a bunch of things but it didn't work. I think the screen was just broken. It seemed to be coming on like normal, just without a screen.
    Then I really messed it up. I pulled out the battery and followed the instructions under there to pull out... motherboards? Bad idea. Then when I put it all back together, every time I turned it on it would just beep... a lot.
    I don't know if there's anything on the screen because the screen doesn't work.
    At this point, I think the computer is broken. But I'd like to be able to at least get the files off. Any ideas? Is there some way I can fix this and hook up a backup to it? Is it worth it to try to bring it in to a computer fixing store?
    Thanks!

    I suppose it's a memory trouble. Reseat memory sticks or get new memory and install them could solve the problem.

  • Printer wont do as its told in I.E

    I have a Hp photosmart  C410
    When printing from Internet explorer, for some reason it defaults to double sided printing, even thou for every other program on the computer its single sided.
    Even if i click on printer properties and change it back to single sided it still prints out double sided, it does not matter where i change the settings the printer all ways prints out in double sided when printing from I.E and other program it prints out single sided no problem, no changes it just does it, I only have a problem when printing from IE.

    It looks like I have solved my problem
    Geil customer support mentioned that the CAS listed in CPU-Z is based upon the memory SPD not the actual of the Motherboard (although the motherboard seems to drive the memory at SPD CAS regardless)
    Using AIDA32 and checking the SPD item under Motherboard I saw the following…
    Highest CAS Latency   2.5 (4.0 ns @ 250 MHz)
    2nd Highest CAS Latency   2.0 (4.30 ns @ 232 MHz)
    I took this info to mean SPD CAS would be 2 with FSB 232 or less.
    The memory itself says CAS 2.5 on it and I bought it based upon reviews stating its speed at CAS 2.5.
    My assumption is that it needs CAS 2.5 to run properly.
    On cranking FSB to 236 and setting memory to 400 I am getting stable, consistent, FAST CAS 2.5 (in CPU-Z) in Win-XP.
    Im even able to set performance mode to Turbo and am getting a 5300 in Sandra Memory Bandwidth not to mention a rock solid 3.3 Gig P4 system.
    I will probably push FSB up closer to 250 in small increments tomorrow, but for now Im satisfied and its bed time.
    I would suggest to anyone having memory trouble to use AIDA32 and have a look at the SPD, I certainly found it instructive.
    I would advise anyone running Geil 4000 Platinum PC 500 memory to get their front side bus up over 232 (and of course raise mem voltage, im using 2.8)
    mmmmmmmmmmm success

  • How to implement this algorithm ?

    Hello all,
    can u help me in implementing the following algorithm in java?
    1.suppose we start with a single pixel p and wish to expand from that seed pixel to fill a coherent region. lets define a similarity measure s(i,j) such that it produces a high result if pixels i and j are similar and a low one otherwise.
    first, consider a pixel q adjacent to pixel p. we can add pixel q to pixel p's region if S(p,q)>T for some threshold T. we can the proceed to the othr neighbors of p and do likewise.The process will continue till all the pixels in the image are labelled or belong to one region or the other.

    You may want to look at the various Connected components algorithms out
    there. These (tend to) recursively search the neighbours of the seed
    pixel and check for similarity. If the neighbours are similar to the
    seed they are marked as being in the same region. These algorithms can in general be made to run using a stack and while loop rather then using recursion (which on large images can get you into memory trouble very rapidly).
    A basic algorithm does the following
    create a second image containing ints. This image is the output from the algorithm. different regions have different integer numbers assigned to them. Ensure all pixels have -1 as their value.
    from your seed pixel check each of its neighbours in turn
    // the output image of integers
    private Image output;
    // the input image to process
    private Image input;
    // origin of the image is in the top left
    // assuming input image is greyscale and getPixel() / setPixel()
    // return Pixel objects. regionvalue should be greater then 0
    public void processPixel(int x, int y, Pixel compareTo, int regionValue)
       // am I similar to the pixel passed in
       // if so set my corresponding pixel in the output image
       if(isSimilar(input.getPixel(x,y),compareTo))
          output.getPixel(x,y).setGreyValue(regionValue);
       } else
          // i am not similar so bail out at let the caller check its
          // other neighbours
          return;
       //check north
       if( output.getPixel(x,y-1).greyValue() == -1)  // -1 means that its not been processed
          // this compares new pixel to this pixel
          processPixel(x,y-1,input.getPixel(x,y), regionValue);
       //check north east
      if( output.getPixel(x+1,y-1).greyValue() == -1)  // -1 means that its not been processed
          // this compares new pixel to the seed pixel
          // achives a different goal then the search for north given above
          // choose which goal suits you best
          processPixel(x+!,y-1,compareTo, regionValue);
       // check east
       //check south east
        //check north west
    // nope you are not mistaken all 8 neighbours may need to be checked if
    //  processing a greyscale image.
        return;

  • P45 Neo3FR restart issue

    Ello
    4 days have passed since I got my new pc.. 4 days in which I tried to make it work (with no result of course). The system : MSI p45 neo3fr, leadtek 9800gx 2 with 1gb, 2x1gb a-data 1066, intel e8500 and a corsair 470w power supply.
    The system reboots everytime I do something other than just watch the screen. If I try to run prime or orthos it reboots in 2-3 seconds. I checked the cables and all the other components but Im wondering if there is a compatibility issue between the mobo and the memories since A-Data was not on the "supported by neo3" list.
    Any directions?

    Okay okay I get it but the psu is not the problem. I know this for sure because I switched the 9800gx2 with an older 8800gt and it still restarts and stuff. So right now the psu<>gpu is not the main problem.
    Yep, thinking the same according to test that you have done:
    /* VGA is not underload when you doing the Orthos testing where you the problems, that means CPU overheating, Memory troubles{Too tight timings, underpowered memory sticks, defective stick} Do you have any OC?}
    Do memory check with >>Memtest86<< 1st
