MS 645E MAX-U & ATI Radeon Pro 9700

I took delivery of a new PC a little while ago but it has never successfuly run any of the games I currently play.
Age of Mythology
Battlefield 1942
Warcraft III
Variety of errors including exiting to desktop, freezing, blank screen, unsupported frequency errors etc.
Tried XP Home, W2K, XP Professional but none work. XP Sometimes catches the errors, offers to file a report with MS and accuses the RADEON Drivers.
Tried variety of Radeon drivers (Currently 6200).
Have spoken to suppliers a number of times and they suggested reformatting as FAT - no joy, loading DirectX 9 - no joy (Yes I know its only Beta but the supplier didnt).
Now want to request suppliers replace components but not sure which. Other information suggests users have played battledfield with the 9700 so I think it may be MB or the combination.
Suggestions please??
Spec:-
Systemax Premier Midi Tower 300W
ATI Radeon 9700 pro 128MB DDR with TV-Out + DVI
Intel® Pentium® 4 2.8GHz 512K Cache 533FSB
120GB Ultra DMA 100 7200rpm
Systemax 40x12x40 CD-RW
1GB PC2700 333DDR (2x512MB)
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Creative Audigy 5.1 With Firewire
MSI SIS 645DX Socket 478

Hi All,
Finally got the supplier to replace both power supply and Radeon card.
Power supply is now Antec SL400 which is not as good as the True Power I asked for but still appears to meet the specs being recommended.
Radeon is like for like to cover possible hardware fault (They would have swapped for GeForce but none in stock at moment).
Problem is if anything slightly worse (Now using 3Dmark2002 which appears to give repro results).
With new H/W 3DMark doesnt even start, before it used to cause reboot during tests.
Tried fiddlying with BIOS and it appears that reducing Memory clock so that memory is at 266 instead of 333 produces a stable system. No other change seems to have an effect.
Not yet had chance to report to supplier.
Suggestions Please.

  • How to tell if an ATI Radeon Pro Graphics card needs any updates?

I have upgraded the firmware on my G4 Gigabit and re-installed the combo update for OS 10.4.11, and am on an update rampage. I am wondering if I need to update driver/firmware for the video card in this computer. It is a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. System Profiler lists its ROM Revision as 113-99703-127.
How to tell if this needs an updated driver? Also, the ATI site lists both a download for ATI Displays Panel, and Retail Update. If I need to update, which is it, or both?
I know nothing about graphics cards.
    Thanks!
    BC

    Hi-
The ATI Displays panel is a handy tool. Install if you like, with no worry as to adverse effects.
Other than that, Tiger has all the drivers that you need. No firmware update is needed, either.
Should be no need for outside updates for the 9000.

  • Can someone explain why ati radeon mac 9700 pro: not working in MDD?

    Hi,
I might have posted a long thread about the 9700 mac pro video card that I just got, however why for some reason its working in the Digital Audio machine I have and not in my MDD machine? When I connect it to the AGP 4X slot and turn on the computer, I get nothing but a black/cold screen.
And yes, I have the molex connected to the power supply? I am trying to figure out where I am going wrong with connecting this video card up to my MDD mac. Works in the DA machine, but not in the MDD.
It required me to tape pins 3 and 11 and I bought it off of ebay. I might appear to be a pc card, though the PCB is red in color.

    Oh this helps!
What is so different that the card won't work in my computer? Remember, though the seller told me through his ad on ebay that it is a MAC card, I highly doubt that it was a real mac card to begin with, but rather a PC card because in the end he told me to tape pins 3 and 11 - but his ad did not mention this.
I have also done an in depth analysis of my entire system using techtool pro and the AHTCD - Both have determined that there is nothing wrong with my system at all.
So, what is the conclusion as to why it worked in my Digital Audio machine and not the MDD? Can an MDD refuse a PC video card flashed w/mac firmware? Is it some sort of smart slot?

  • Ati radeon pro hd 3870   any experience to report?

is anybody using this card? impressions? problems?
i have an X1900 and i am getting little stutters in video capture and playback (the movies render ok) and i wonder if the 3870 would help.

I just wanted to do a quick update. I tried completely uninstalling the drivers (including running driver sweeper) and reinstalling the drivers. That made no difference.
However, because I've seen quite a few reports of this card working for other people, I decided to exchange it for another 3870 in hopes that maybe I got a bum card. Well I did the exchange yesterday, and I have been in Bootcamp-gaming-bliss ever since!
So I guess my 2 cents is try the complete uninstall/reinstall of drivers (thanks hatter for the recommendation on that) and if it still doesn't work, maybe you got a bad card like I did.
I just wanted to toss out some hope for others having the same problem.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 PRO Graphics Card

I am thinking of upgrading my graphics card, my computer came with a Nvidia Geforce4 mx, I was at the apple store and noticed a few people having problems with this card. I was wondering if anyone out there has any info for me about the odds of this card working on my Quicksilver G4 933 MHz. Iam driving a Cinema Display 20 inch. I really like gaming online and could use the added memory that the ATI Radeon Pro 9600 has, plus my curent card has problems with full screen games.

    StephanZcat,
I've been out of town for a bit and just saw your post and links. I'll do some research and see if I can come up with something. ...and maybe we can get some other experts in here.
    JBernstein:
Apple usually has a disclaimer about all 3rd party upgrades to Mac's that states they 'do not support them'. So, if it's not for sale at the Apple Store or a Dealer, "It's not supported" - even if it works just fine. For Apple Authorized Do-it-Yourself upgrades there is a page you can access:
    http://www.apple.com/support/diy/
There are many sites that track Mac upgrades, I'll list a few.
For 3rd party upgrades and issues, look at:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/
    http://www.barefeats.com/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/benchmark/index.cfm
BTW, your 20' just needs at least a 32MB Video card to push it. Here's a list of most cards that will fit in your 'Sawtooth'. It's set up for Apple Cubes but the information may be helpful in
seeing the differences in video cards
    http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=1327
Note: Your Sawtooth's motherboard does NOT support ADC connections. There is no power supply for them. You will have to make sure whatever Video card you get has DVI and VGA (not ADC).
Look at this for compatible video cards for a Sawtooth:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=166&type=Video&TI=%23TimeForm at%28Now%28%29%2C&shoupgrds=ShowUpgrades
Finally, there are a host of 'flashed' PC video cards available for Mac's on Ebay. I have a few and most work fine. If you want to see some options, I suggest you look at what a seller named 'yoyomarv' has for sale. Ask questions before you buy. A card you might consider is a converted NVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4600
    It's a start...

  • Can't make ATI radeon use 1680x1050 resolution

I can't get my ati card to display 1680x1050 resolution in xorg. I'm running xorg 7.1 and the newest ati drivers. but I only get 1600x854 (or something) when trying to set it to 1680x1050. My video card is ATI Radeon Mobility 9700. Do  I need to update the firmware of the card, or is there a setup issue?
    Thanks in advance.

  • G4 Sawtooth and ATI 9800 Pro

I just acquired an ATI Radeon Pro Mac Edition video card. I have an Apple 15" flat screen monitor. The monitor cable connector won't fit the video card connector. Is there an adapter or is it that this is the wrong card? The Apple monitor connector snaps on and is a bit wider and the video card usines screws to attach and is just a bit shorter.

    Hi-
The monitor has an ADC connector? Confirm here.
The 9800 has DVI and VGA, and will require a DVI to ADC adapter to connect the 15" display.

  • MSI KT4 ULTRA-BFISR + Ati Radeon 9700 pro = not good??

    Hello everybody!
First of all, i youst have to say that i think MSI have the best motherboards....
Here's the problem (i haven't buyed anything yet!):
I am going to buy MSI KT4 ULTRA-BFISR and ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, but i have read many places that Radeon aint working with MSI KT4-based cards! Im am going to buy an 520W Power (i aint so good in english so i hope you now what i write  :D )
I am also going to buy 2 x Cosair pc3500 xms ram... Is this one working with the motherboard by the way?
But my question is: Will the Ati Radeon 9700 pro work with this card? (i must remember to buy the 1.3 version!) I am gonna get my Radeon 9700 pro from USA, how can i now when i order that is an 1.3 card?
    Thank you for answering!  :]

I think also that even there is two drivers, that is not a reaseon why it isn't work. One time I install only standard VGA drivers, but result was that I got two standard VGA driver.  8o
First time I try without VIA drivers, then with 4.42 and 4.43 VIA drivers. Result was almost same all the time, it always crash when Nature test start, but this exist also to older mobo (Abit KT7A-RAID). Problem exits few games they lock up or stuttering. Ati demos works fine, but one time that car demo stuttering a lot, but I transfer data at same, so I'm not sure what was reason.
This moment I don't have possibilities to try Hyperion 4.45 drivers or something else, because it's my friend computer.

  • ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (Original)

Just a little question; Why doesn't ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (Original) work properly with K8N Neo Platinum 1 and 2 ? At any of these mboards  computer hangs on a reboot. It's not a deadly issue to me due to that i use the 9700-card on a computer that always is running. But have i maybe missed something ???

I had the same problem with my 9700 Pro (built by ATI) on the K8N Neo2. To resolve it, I upped my AGP voltage in BIOS to 1.6 volts. Worked fine then. I've since switched cards to a Leadtek 6600GT and leave the AGP voltage at 1.5 volts. It works fine so I think maybe it's an ATI/MSI problem.    . Hope this helps.

  • ATI Radeon 9700 Pro - Power Supply too small?

I'm having a problem with my Powercolor 9700 Radeon Pro. My system will simply not power when i plug this video card in (no power supply start, no posting beeps, nothing).
The 9700 pro card I have will work fine on another PC that I have with a lesser power supply and lesser cpu so I know the card is ok. My Geforce3 card works fine in the new 865PE computer, so it seems the MSI board/AGP slot is ok.
I've tried unplugging all peripherals (HDDs, CD, DVD drives) and still no power up when the 9700 is plugged into the power supply.
    My system consist of:
    MSI 865PE Neo2 FISR(v1.7)
    P4, 2.8, 800fsb
    512MB Corsair XMS Twinx (2 256MB sticks)
    2 HDD (Western Digital, 60 & 120GB)
    DVD/CD drive
    CD-RW drive
    Soundblaster live
    2 internal case fans
    360w PS
    Stats for power supply:
    +5v - 35A
    +12v - 17A
    +3.3v - 28A
    Bios settings:
    CPU BUS (FSB) - 200
    AGP Voltage - 1.5
    PCI/AGP speed (PCI clock) - 66.33/33.33
    PCI latency timer - 32
AGP setting - (if this is the 4x/8x setting, I can't find a way to change it)
APIC ACPI SCI IRQ - disabled
    AGP aperature - 64MB
    Dynamic overclocking - off
    Performance mode - slow
    hyperthreading - disabled
I've tried upping the AGP voltage to 1.6 and I have disabled cacheing.
I read that some folks have recommended setting the AGP down to 4x, although for the life of me, I cannot find a way to do that in bios or anywhere else.
Does this power supply sound acceptable? Do the 9700's draw their power off the 12v circuit?  If this PS is weak, then what +12v amp. should I aim for?
Does anyone have any ideas of any of issues that might cause my system to not power up like this?
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks for responding Sean,
I did try upping the AGP voltage to 1.6v while only having the the 9700 card attached to the power supply.  Same result, no power-up what so ever.
The other computer's video drivers are were the standard windows vga drivers.   I don't think that really is a problem since I can't get the computer/power supply to even come on, let alone load windows.
What baffles me is that I have a geforce3 agp card that works fine in the neo2, and the 9700 works fine in another computer.  Other then the power supply, or a problem/setting with the mainboard, I can't imagine what the problem is.  The thing is, I don't want to shell out $100 for a power supply until I know that'll fix it.
    thanks

  • ATI Radeon 9000 Pro video card is conflicting with additional memory

I have a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro video card. I have a 645E Max motherboard (MS-6547). I recently purchased a 512MB dimm of Kingston PC2700 Cas 2.5 memory (KVR333X64C25/512) to go with the the 256MB dimm of the same model # above. I installed the memory and my screen stays blank. When I remove the new dimm it runs fine. I did get the memory and the motherboard tested at the store where I got the motherboard and they work fine. I came to the conclusion it was my video card when I removed all my components except the memory and the video card, and turned on the machine, nothing. I did try swiching dimm location and changing any bios settings I thought would make it work. I tried updating the video card drivers and motherboard AGP drivers. If anybody had this problem in the past could you tell me how you got it to work.

I took the board and the 2 dimms to the store where I bought them.  They hooked up both dimms and a video card to the board.  When it was powered up, both dimms were recognized.  After I got home I proceded to determine if another component it conflicting with the memory.  I started with both dimms and my video card the Radeon.  I powered up with no other hardware connected and the screen remains blank.  I remove the 512MB dimm and leave the 256MB dimm in, and powered up and pc booted up normally.

  • ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x in Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 PMac G4

    Hi,
This is my first time posting to these discussion group... I've been going through related threads and have not found an answer to my problem...
I have a Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 G4. Awhile ago I upgraded the processor to a Sonnet 1.8ghz so I could run Leopard.
I just bough the ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x video card. I researched around and that seemed to be a card that would work in my machine. I even read a review on Amazon where someone had also upgraded to the 1.8 processor used this card with no issues.
I do have an older monitor - Apple Studio Display CRT with the ADC connector. So I also bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter kit.
I installed the card and do not get any picture at all - I believe I have installed everything correctly. I'm pretty sure I can hear the fan on the video card in the machine. The monitor is getting power from the adapter since the button lights up when I press it - but it does not stay lit -- the monitor never turns on. Using my old graphics card the monitor makes a little "beep" when it turns on.
In reading the other topics I am wondering if it might be a power issue? According to Other World Computing's profile my machine has a max of 220 watts. Although they suggest this video card as one the will work in my machine.
I have disabled the hard drive that came with the machine (too small) and am using two Maxtor hard drives that I added - one ATA (120gb) and one SATA (500gb) that is connected to an SATA pci card. I also have two additional pci cards with usb 2.0/firewire ports.
In looking at the topics here I came across the link about taping the 3 and 11 pins on the video card. Even though the card I have is 4x/2x not 8x I thought I'd give it a shot. That did not work either.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I don't wish to sound redundant here, but I've been reviewing the vendor's page:
It's OK- I don't mind beating this dead horse....
The maker says such to protect themselves from possible claims that may arise due to over loaded systems and power problems when their card is installed in said system.
Of course, 300w would be nice, but they didn't even specify the PSU rating a couple years ago. The Sawtooth, with it's 237w PSU, used to be listed as a compatible machine for the 9800...... They just didn't consider how far a Sawtooth might be modded.
Within reason, the early G4's (Sawtooths) are capable of using the Radeon 9800 Pro. The GE has the same 338w PSU as the DA (they are interchangeable), so there is plenty of power for the 9800.
One thing to remember, the requirements of the ADC port of the AGP slot are removed by using a non ADC card. This really changes the calculations of the power available.
It's kinda' a long post, but, if you care to get ALL the details, check the following:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7065653&#7065653
I think you'll be satisfied with the explanation.......
Which leaves your second, and very appropriate, point.
The main enemy of all, though, isn't power. Heat is the biggest concern.
Reducing heat/increasing cooling by using a third party fan on the 9800 is highly recommended. The 9800 is a hot card, and the stock fan is prone to early failure.
Adding additional cooling to remove the extra heat produced by the 9800, by using an exausting PCI fan, will also help the PSU provide adequate voltage to the system, by reducing the amount of hot air moving out of the PSU.
Super heated air moving through the PSU reduces the cooling ability of the PSU. A hot PSU doesn't produce reliable power.
So, add the 9800, add some cooling, and enjoy!

I have been looking for someone with the same or similar problem as mine to no avail
Ok so heres my problem...a few months ago i noticed that the screen saver had frozen on my G4 mac
At the time i didn't think anything of it so i try to reboot but it wouldn't get any further than the "Blue" screen after weeks of trouble shooting, reading through logs and surfing what felt like 90% of the net i tracked it down to the "ATI Radeon9700 Extensions" in my system folder.
As you can see from above i have a "ATI Radeon 9800 PRO" and i presume that it runs off the 9700 drivers because there are no 9800 extenstions in the driver updates from ATI....
Anyway this is the strange bit ....if i boot up in "Safe Mode" and delete all the "ATI Radeon9700 Extenstions" below
    ATIRadeon9700.kext
    ATIRadeon9700DVDDriver.bundle
    ATIRadeon9700GA.plugin
    ATIRadeon9700GLDriver.bundle
    ATIRadeon9700VADriver.bundle
    Then trash...
    Extensions.kextcache
    Extensions.mkext
Then put a new copy of the "Radeon9700 Extensions" from the 10.4.8 upgrade back in, it boots fine.
These extensions come with the apple OS updates so everytime i upgrade the OS i have to go through the above steps again.
I am starting to think that the openGL capabilities of my card is fooked because the screensaver that im talking about is "Flurry" and it is really jerky now if i try to run it
I know that the SS users openGL
Also if i try and launch UT2k4 i get a crash log error of "unable to create pixel format.
This is what the boot up log looks like before i trash the extensions

Any ideas ...please dont just say"Buy a new card" i would really like to get to the bottom of this...if it turns out that my card is fried then fair enough

I'm getting exactlly the same error. This occures after several weeks of sudden & spontaneous shutdowns. And now I get this error whenever I try to launch W.o.W.

Now, my card is actually a 9800 Pro. I think it's something to do with OpenGL. I'm gonna try to launch other apps that access OpenGL directly and see what I get.

In 2.

  • Will the following ATI Radeon 9800 Pro work on a G4 MDD?

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 128MB DDR, and I'm wondering if anyone can verify if it will work on a G4 MDD. It was bought for a G5, but that G5 doesn't exist.
Embossed on the front of the card it says:
    PN: 109-a14400-01
On the back there are 3 stickers:
    1) J53480YRQ74B 603-4070
    2) SN + PN: 102A1440103 000009
    3) J53480YRQDMA 630-4908
On the metal back-plane it has etched: 805-5422-A
The card has 1 ADC connector with 25V/4A Max written beside it, and one DVI.
Google brings up some hits, but nothing definitive concerning G4 vs G5.
    Thanks in advance!

If it looks exactly like this one, including the "teeth" along the bottom, it won't work in any G4.
This card has an "AGP Pro" connector, which gets all of its power through the slot (it has no molex connector).
Even if the card was cut to physically fit in a G4, the AGP slot in a G4 (any model) can not provide enough power for a 9800. It would fry the G4, the card, or both.

  • Has Firefox 8 solved the multi-tab issue?

I have remained with an older version of Firefox because when I fire it up, it opens all the urls that were last open when I closed down - saves loads of time. Anyone able to say if 8.0 also does this. I'm not upgrading until a version does, and Fire
