MS 6728 - 865PE Neo2 LS - UDMA to PIO mode
Hello,
I have very similar probles as allready discussed - that XP automatically swich from UDMA to PIO mode (described on Microsoft webpages - error ID 9; The device, \Device\Ide\IdePort0, did not respond within the timeout period.). But nobody had problem with this chipset... I checked a lot of things: removing IDE drivers from the sytem - reboot. I did replace 80-pin cable for new one. Checked my HDD with utility from the manufacturer.
I have latest Intel chipset drivers 5.0.2.1002 from your website, latest BIOS 1.5
Have you any more ideas?
thanx

[Other 865 Series] MSI 865PE Neo2-V and Dual Channel Mode Question
Hello, I have a quick question regarding dual channel mode with my current motherboard. I have an MSI 865PE Neo2-V and am wondering if it is possible to enable dual channel mode while having three RAM modules inserted in the motherboard.
For example, I currently have one 512MB PC3200 module in my computer. If I purchase another 512MB module and run them in dual channel mode, will it be possible to buy a 1GB module or another size module, and still have all three slots run in dual channel mode? Or is dual channel only operational on this motherboard if only two of the three slots are occupied?
Thanks.Dual channel requires an even number of sticks.

865PE Neo2(6728) D-Bracket hangs at Memory Detection Test
This is terribly annoying... I just bought the mother board... Its a 865PE Neo2(6728)800mhzFSB the processor is P4 2.4ghz 800mhz, 512k l2-Cache. I dont know who made it like i know nothing about northwood or whatever, it says Intel on the box... I have 512MB of "Legacy Electronics" PC3200 64x64 DDR... I also just bought a NVdia G4 Ti-4200 64mb DDR 4x AGP made by Pixelview. I have a 160GB WD 8mb Cache 7200 HD... Ok the problem is when i go to boot up the computer, the VIDEO doesnt come on, and when i installed the "D-Bracket" the lights hang at 3 light, top right green all other red... Says in the manual that problem is memory detection test, testing onboard memory size, will hang if damaged or not installed properly. Ok. I have no idea how that wo;uld happen so, just to check i took out RAM, no dice, i changed video cards to MX440 G4, no dice, i tried disconnection the PCI slot which has the 160GB hard drive connected(why it needs this i dont know, according to WD WinXP needs...) none of this changes anything.. How do i check the onboard memory or could it be anything else? Ok thats all i have thanks for the help!!
Did you tried to boot up the system without the D-Bracket?
Yes it still does nothing, no video... Thats why i put in the D-Bracket. It doesnt sound like its going through the POST either.. I dont know if computers do that anymore thou;gh haha..
If you did, did you change to another piece of RAM to test?
I have no more DDR to put in, only SDRam and im sure that wont work.. I tried moving to different slots, 1 3 and 4 thinking maybe it was backwords i dunno... Didnt do anything, and you USED to be able to take the ram out and still boot into bios etc...
Did you change any settings in your BIOS?
I havent even gotten video, nada... Black screen.
What is the wattage of the PSU you are using now?
Where do i find the wattage? The watts on the case is uh... 350 or 400 one of the two... The case says USB Deluxe P4 Case... And the watts on the Power supply is 115 if thats what you were wondering... Hope that answer the question -
865PE Neo2-FIS2R and Geil memory problem
With 512MB (2x256) of Corsair XMS 3700, the system is perfectly stable (runs 24/7 crunching for UD, also have done Prime95 torture test).
With 1-GB (2x512) of Geil PC4000 Ultra Platinum, the system is very unstable. It usually won't even boot fully into Windows without a BSOD (which vary) or if it does get into Windows it crashed soon thereafter.
If I put the Corsair memory back in (like I have them right now, to be able to use the system to post this message), the system is back to 100% stable, so it seems to be entirely a memory-related problem.

Have run MemTest standard test on the Geil modules individually and as a pair, and have tried different slots. Testing thus far shows no errors when each module is installed separately, but when used in a pair there are sometimes errors shown.
Have tried the modules in slots 1,3 and slots 2,4 with no difference.
Have tried setting DDR voltage from 2.70 up to 2.85v for the Geil (approved up to 2.9v) with no apparent change in stability.
Have tried changing Spread Spectrum setting between enabled and disabled. Disabled seems to be better, but problem remains.
Have tried using SPD disabled with settings listed above, and SPD enabled (which sets timings at 2.5-4-4-8,8).
Edit: I'd asked for advice, but then realized that the very limited timeframe in which I could return the Geil would expire if I waited beyond business hours today. So I've RMA'd the Geil and have ordered a 1-GB Corsair TwinX XMS 3700 pack instead.I've had similar problems to you but with Corsair TwinX LL's and if you read back a month in this forum you will see others have also with various memories on the 865 FISR.
The fix I found was Kingston memory but others have had problems with Kingston. There was a thread running a week or two ago attempting to document successful memory mobo combinations.
Bottom line, stick with what works on your mobo until MSI fix the incompatability/instability issues. -
(865PE Neo2) - Memory Controller Problems ???
Hi, I've been having problems with my RAM. I've run MEMTEST and found that my RAM continually failed test #5 (64 Block move). However, I pulled the RAM and tested in a friend's computer..... and it passed without any problems..... I went back to my computer and continually changed the BIOS setting until I finally got something to work....
What I did, was change the DRAM Freq from 400 down to 333. And it seems to be stable..... (The RAM was meant to run at 400)
The people at Corsair offered to replace the RAM, however, because both sticks produce them same problem, and because it works at 333 but not 400, and because it fails test #5 and not any other test, then they think the problem lies somewhere other then the RAM. And at the stage, i tend to agree.....
Now someone suggested it might be the Memory Controller..... I have no idea what that means..... but it sounds plausable.... Eitherway, I believe it might have something to do with the Motherboard..... And I was hoping someone here might have an idea on how I can either test it, or fix it.....
Thanks a bunch.....
My SYSTEM Specs are.....

all without success..... And what i mean, is that I still get error#5 in memtest. And ALWAYS the error occures in the 92%-96% portion of the test.....
HOWEVER, When I drop the DRAM Freq to 333.... No problem..... All is fine..... Even at 2-3-3-6
Unfortunately, I doubt I will be able to test any other DDR400 memory in my system, but it would be interesting to know the results.....
I also find marginal confort knowing this problem is a bit 'common', however, i would find MORE comfort solving the problem :-)
Thanks :-) -
I'm still looking for some starting reference points for anyone that might have successfully overclocked their P4 2.8Ghz CPU on an 865PE-NEO2-LS board, especially the Northwood. SoundBlaster Audigy 2Thanks guys for the replies. Yes, you are right, I was hoping specifically for the 865PE-NEO2-LS board, and see no responses. At this point, hopefully my 3.4 Northwood should be here today or tomorrow. On this board, I just could not get past 3.1 Ghz with my 2.8, and it seems as soon as I started creeping towards the FSB of 230, things really went wacky/unstable. No matter if I raised the voltages, loosened memory timings, etc. But having said that, CONGRATS to you guys for getting your 2.8s juiced up - I wish I had better luck!
Obviously, my next question would be is how well does the 3.4 Ghz Northwood O/C - isn't the ceiling about 4Ghz? -
Cannot install 1G of DDR sdram for my 865PE neo2 board
recently i buy another DDR333 512mb kingston sdram and wish to install to my PC,
upgrade to 1G memory
After install, when operation system booting (Window ME) come out blue screen with error message
" While initialing devive shell
Cannot find or load require file KRNL386.exe
The path was not found
System halted "
When taken out the new DDR sdram(left 512mb) - boot Ok
Test the new DDR sdram and plug out old one - boot OK
whenever I install 1G of memory , the system will hang

If your computer has 1 gigabyte (GB) or more of random access memory (RAM) with shared video memory, the computer may boot to a blue screen error when you try to start Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Windows 98.
CAUSE
Windows Me and Windows 98 are not designed to handle 1 GB or more of RAM. 1 GB or more of RAM can lead to potential system instability.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, reduce the amount of memory that is installed in your computer to 512 megabytes (MB) or less.

Identifying exact model of MOBO 865PE Neo2
I am trying to identify the exact model of my son's computer's mobo.
On the board it has MS-6728 Ver. 1
There seems to be a differenct between the 865pe neo2 and a 865 neo2 platinum.
More confusion when I try to determine Current Bios.
On screen at boot : A6728IMS v1.9 110603
When actually in the setup bios screens says ver3.19
When looking online, the bios for the above mentioned platinum is listed as ver3.19 with the same date stamp.
Where can I find if pcbv1 or pcbv2
Sorry if this is a newbie question. I REALLY have tried to locate this info on the MSI site.

Still can't get a clue why it freezes out. Is your system ... OEM?
Think I descovered the problem. My processor is evidently a "prescott". Found in another forum. Installing winxp sp2 on a machine with a prescott chip may lead to the startup failure if the bios on the motherboard has not been updated to a version that supports an updated microcode on the prescott. The temporary solution is to turn off level 1 and 2 cache. When I did that the machine actually started loading windows. (terribly slowly I might add) Hopefully when I get the operating system going, I can flash the bios to 2.5. Then turn the cache back on. If not, I'll have to replace the mobo or processor. Can't live with this SLOW system.

I have this MB: MSI 865PE Neo2-PS (MS-6728 v2.0) and now I have both S-ATA full: one place HD and second place DVD burner.
I ordered now a new HD S-ATA and find out, that I have only this 2 ports for S-ATA
What would you recommend me - send back this new HD or exist any possibility how to connect this HD. I think this is a stupid question sorry.
I mean which HD would you recommend me if I can not use SATA HD?
Thank youhttp://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=528 this your board?

Using 3 Memory modules on 865PE Neo2-V
Hi ! I wonder if it´s possible to install three 512MB DDR 400 sticks on a 865PE Neo2-V motherboard (As it has only 3 slots) Will it work as DDR, even if one channel has 1GB and the other 512MB ???
BTW, I´ve always used two 512 MB sticks on one channel (same color slots) Should I see any performance increase if I switch one stick to the other channel ? (one green and one purple)
Thanks for your help !!!Quote from: Maesus on 23-February-06, 06:28:03
If you want dual channel performance, make sure you plug the DIMM at slot 1 and slot 3; or slot 2 and slot 4. If you have 3 DIMMs and plug them all, you will not have dual-channel performance but you have 512MB more RAM, which will definitely help to reduce the amount of transfer of virtual memory in your HDD and thus improve the overall performance.
So I understand that 1,5 GB of RAM on Single Channel will perform better than 1 GB on Dual Channel ? -
Hi all, thanks for any help in advance.
I'm putting together a new P4 system built around the 865PE Neo2-P motherboard.
Processor: P4 (prescott) 3.0 GHZ
Memory: 2x 256MB Corsair Value Select PC3200 (if you need the model #, ask)
Motherboard BIOS version: 3.A0
Hard Drive: WD 7200 RPM, 80 GB
Video card: old, generic PCI video card.
OS windows XP, no updates (no chance--see below)
The computer locks up predictably at several points.
When I do the INF update from the CD-ROM (it worked once or twice).
When I do the INF update through MSI's Live Update 3
Attempting to download WinXP features to enable Windows Update to do its job
It will occasionally lock up when working with start menu options.
It also locked several times while booting from the WinXP CD prior to installing XP.
Doing the INF update off the CD always brings up the System Properties window and if the system is going to lock, it seems to be locking while trying to bring up the window. I don't know if the Live Update 3 is doing the same thing or not. I never get far enough. The net card and AC 97 drivers installed fine. But then, they don't seem to make the system Properties Window come up either.
Windows Update: The computer downloads the Windows Update program itself just fine, but when I try to get the actual updates, it wants to get additional components. Once I click the button to tell it to go ahead, the computer locks.
Troubleshooting
Memory Swap:
I pulled memory from a functioning computer and replaced the Corsair chips. No change.
I reduced memory to one memory SIMM in one bank (bank 0) That got me thoughrough the INF update from the CD but ran aground on Windows Updste and Live Update 3.
BIOS: Is the current version according to MSI's website and Live Update 3.
Disabled L1, L2 caches on the Processor: slowed the computer to a crawl, but it had the same problem when it came to Live Update 3.
Processor Swap: I don't have another P4 to swap. Both my other machines are Athlons.Sharp,
If I read my power supply right, it's rated for 15A on the +12V rail. Is 16A rock-bottom or recommended?
I have a working machine with a 400W power supply (17A on the +12V rail) and I connected the 400 to the computer. I'm still getting the same problems.
I downloaded memtest and put it on a floppy. It's been running for a solid hour now with no complaints.
When I was trying to get ahold of memtest, I surfed out to the memtest.org and tried to download without the benefit of your forum link. The machine froze after clicking on one of memtest's download links. I'm pretty sure it was the "precompiled package for floppy" link. It downloaded fine off your forum link however.
Any other ideas before I RMA this puppy? -
865PE NEO2-FI2R + games = not good
I have a big problem with my new computer.
The system is working like a charm in Windows applications and when I'm working with video editing, however I cannot play any games because of the major stutter I get in all games. I cannot seem to find a fix for this problem :(
I have tried with BIOS 1.3 trough 1.5b2 and it only gets worse for every new BIOS I use, now I'm back at 1.3.
My system is:
865PE NEO2-FIS2R currently BIOS 1.3 and latest drivers
2 x 512Mb DDR-400 Apacer
1 x 80Gb S-ATA as system disk
2 x 160Gb S-ATA at RAID-0
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO with Catalyst 3.7
DirectX 9.0b
IDE Busmaster disabled in BIOS (enabled before, this was bad I heard?)
No overclocking (even tried overclock)
MAT at slow (tried every setting)
D.O.T at disabled (tried every setting)
PCI Latency at 32 (tried 64)
AGP aper. size at 128Mb (tried every setting)
using the built in audio chip (tried disabled)
Windows XP Pro SP1 with every update available.
FSAA off (tried every setting)
Aniso. filtering at 2x (tried every setting)
every other setting at "performance"
AGP 8x (tried 4x)
Fastwrites on (tried off)
My guess now is that when I had IDE Busmaster enabled and installed the Intel INF pack it installed a busmaster driver which was bad for the system. Could this be the case. I did a fresh install on the system two days ago but I didn't try any games until everything was installed, I didn't expect this to happen :(
The system isn't overheated because I'm using many big fans right now to make sure it isn't overheated.
I'm lost here, what do I do ? :/It's really amazing how many quality component systems utilizing the 875/865 chipset(all mobo manufacturers-not MSI specific)have been brought down by an inadequate PSU. This is one component that can no longer be taken for granted. I'm no IRQ expert but it's funny how some systems work better with the onboard sound and others with a seperate soundcard. Also I have seen more USB problems with this chipset than any other. I jumped on this 875 chipset as soon as it came out(couldn't wait any longer to upgrade my old PIII - which I'm in the process of rejuvenating for my son)but I will certainly wait out all the bugs on the upcoming PCI Express platform.

Hello,
This is my first post here so I would write down my system configuration at first:
my MSI mobo: 865PE Neo2-PFISR (with BIOS update to V3.A since 21/01/2005)
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 HT 2.8E SL79K
RAM: 2GB Kingston 400MHz DDR (4 x KVR400X64C3A/512)
Graphics Card (GPU): Club ATI 9600XT 256MB AGP 8x
2 SATA HDDs: 320GB + 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm
3 IDEs: SONY DVD-ROM 16x, PLEXTOR CD-RW 52x, NEC DVD-RW DL 16x
Sound Card: TASCAM US-122 (External USB)
Power Supply (PSU): Seasonic S12+ 550W 80plus (+3,3V@24A, +5V@30A, +12V@18A, [email protected], +5Vsb@3A) http://www.seasonicusa.com/s12plus.htm
Monitor: EIZO L550 17" LCD with DVI cable connected
O/S: Dual boot on Kubuntu 7.10 and Windows XP (separately in each HDD)
using BIOS IDE setup: Native Mode configuration with S-ATA only, both P-ATA keep Enabled and no RAID which is the only configuration that my Linux installs or starts and USB Legacy Disable for starting a Windows XP installation otherwise it crashes after a CD-ROM boot in the first blue LOAD screen of the bootable Windows XP.
so I would like to discuss the failure problem that I have:
Sometimes I push the pc's power button to power on and the system gives power to the peripherals (CDs, HDDs, FANs, etc) but the screen does not open at all and the front HDD's orange led stays always ON still. The "D-Bracket 2" shows at once started 2 green leds (2nd and 3nd) and two yellow (?!?!?!) or 2 red (2nd and 3rd) and two yellow (?!?!?!). I'm surprised about the yellow!!! I tried out several setups after failure like: barebone, just the CPU installed with no memory, GPU or HDDs etc, another different type of PSU or unplugging any cable (from the USBs' or the D-Bracket's to the Power/HDD/Reset Leds and the FANs') but nothing changed at all. Finally if I "Clear CMOS" using the Jumper JBAT1 as the manual's information, everything goes well and the pc starts excellent again but then, in a random time after a power on or a restart it does the same failure. I do this post because this was happening really rarely in the past but now this is happening usually (once in a week I can say) with no hardware change since a while. Thank you in advance for your time and I will be thankful for any help.
I'm sorry for my bad English.

You have HSF that has retention socket with back plate
Have you done a strip and reassemble of this as yet..........
Could you please rephrase what you've posted cause my bad English couldn't help me understand what you mean. Sorry -
I purchased a brand new MSI 865PE Neo2-FISR along with a P4 2.4C(OEM), a Thermaltake Spark 5c cooler and a Corsair XMS Twinpack(TWINX512-3200C2PT) of DDR400 memory.
The install went fine, the system booted and ran very well right out of the box. I installed the Live Update program from MSI and it updated itself. I then used that utility to generate a BIOS flash/recovery disk to update the bios from 1.10 to 1.30. The update worked fine and I rebooted the machine into Windows XP with no problems.
I then decided to do some tweaking in the new 1.3 BIOS. After several unsuccessful memory/Dynamic Overclocking settings the system refused to boot. I tried the Clear CMOS jumper to reset the defaults but it still would not boot. I checked the D-Bracket, 3 red 1 green(lower right) which indicates that the video card is not initializing. I attempted reseating the video card (a PNY Geforce4 TI4200) with no luck, I then replaced that card with a GeForce4 MX440 SE with no luck. I tried four other video cards, 2 AGP and 2 PCI, with no success.
At this point I pulled the board out of the system and let it sit with the battery out of the board hoping that the BIOS would reset to default values. I reinstalled the board with all the hardware and again the same D-Bracket error with no video generated. I tried different arrangements of memory using the new Corsairs and various other DDR333 & DDR266 again no luck.
What is going on with this thing? How could an errant timing change completely lock out the VGA card? And why can I not clear the settings to allow the card to initialize?
This thing is getting RMA'd soon if I can't find an answer.
Anyone have any ideas or similiar troubles? X(Quote

Or did he have \'hand picked\' memory from Corsair \"2 x 256 MB, Corsair PC3200 TwinX\" and didn\'t report it?
There are a lot of reviews lately that have it as one of the fastest MB's around at the moment, here are a handful I found:

Hello all. I've searched the forums and read alot of posts about my problem, but seem to be missing the information I am looking for. Let me tell you what is going on. I have the MSI 865PE Neo2 FIS2R mobo ver 1, P4 3.0 800FSB, 1 gig corsair twinx XMS 3200 CL2. My problem is when I try to use this RAM my system will not start. No Post, nothing and the D-bracket shows me memory error code. If I use a strip of crucial from my other PC everything works fine (the crucial is 333mhz at 512mb, cl3). I checked out the RAM compatability report on the MSI site and it was pretty confusing to me. I guess my question is, is my RAM compatible or is there a work around to using the XMS modules?
Other components are as follows:
ATI Radeon 9800XT (256)
48xCD-RW
80gig WD drive (PATA)
431w Enermax PSU
Thanks in advance for your help.Hi Dink,
great to see someone who has the same config as I have.
My System:
865PE NEO2 FIS2R (Bios 1.8)
CORSAIR TWINX1024-3200C2PRO
ATI Radeon 9800XT
My system is running very stable with Ram-Settings at 2-3-3-6-8 in Turbo/Sergeant. Pls set your timings to these values. This should work.
Now a question to you. I have problems with the ATI 9800XT cards.
1) Do you also see stuttering or lags when running 3DMark2001SE? With ATI 9800XT Reference Cards I experience these lags also in the overlay mode and in Games when turning very fast (egoshooters). You can see what I mean when you install this little tool which changes the background of your WinXP desktop to a psychedelic wormhole: http://www.geisswerks.com/drempels/index.html
After you start this funny tool. Watch out for your desktop. If it isn't runnin 100% smooth you have the same problems as I have. The only 9800XT card which isn't causing this stuttering is the ASUS 9800XT. Could you pls. tell me if you also see these lags? You can increase the stuttering by copying some files from Dir1 to Dir2.
These lags have no impact of benchmark results!
2) Pls could you tell me what's the IRQ of your card? 16? Is it shared with the USB Controller?
3) Who is the manufacturer of your card? Ati itself or Hercules, HIS or Saphire??
If you cannot see this stuttering I would bet you have a ASUS.
