  • Mac book starts to boot, then turns off

I have Mac Book Pro (13", Yr2011) which will not boot.    It has a 1TB HD which has been partitioned for Mt Lion (primary) and Snow Leopard.  The computer has worked fine in this configuration.    For about 6 wks, the computer was not used and apparently the battery charge depleted to zero.    When an attempt was made to use the computer with battery only, the screen was just light gray with a circular wait icon.    After several minutes with no change, the battery was noted to be discharged.   A charger was connected, but there was no change in the screen.   The computer was then turned off and left to fully charge.   On first attempt to turn on, the computer did come to life.   However, when attempting to Update software, it displayed No Internect connection - even though it was connected by ethernet.     The computer was power cycled, however the screen then again only showed light gray with wait icon.    Now when attempting to boot, the screen shows light gray, circular wait icon & horizontal bar graph indicating something is loading.   After about several minutes, the bar graph fills & disappears, however, the screen remains light gray with wait icon - indefinitely.    On a few attempts, the computer and screen simply turned off after about 30secs.
If I hold the Option key while powering on, then the Mac does boot ok to Snow Leopard.   Apparently, the Mt Lion side of the HD was corrupted during the low battery boot appempt.   The last time I backup MtLion was several months ago, so if I prefer not to reformat and reload from scratch.
Since the Mac did boot up once, I'm wondering if there is a way to recover without having to reformat and start again.
    Don

Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).

  • Torch Wont Start, loads partway then shuts off or resets.

My Torch 9800 was recently went for a swim in rainwater. At first I didn't realize the phone was water damaged, and thought it has just randomly turned off, so I took the battery out, put it back it, and then it started making a static sound. So I immediately removed the battery and put the phone in rice. Unfortunitely got my time lines mixed up and tried to put the battery back in too soon and again the phone started making a static sound. So I took the battery back out, and put it back in rice worried that I'd fryed all the circuits. However, 48 hours later I put the battery back in and the loading screen came up, but when it went to the rogers screen pre-my wallpaper the phone reset and started to load again, then it shut off. Everytime I do a battery pull the led light comes on for a couple seconds, and then it shuts off and nothing happens. So I took the sim card out, and tried the batter again and the phone started to load then shut off.
I've found that If I leave the battery out for a while the phone will start to load, but either gets stuck at the 2/3 mark and will freeze there, or it'll shut off. Today I tried putting the battery back in, and the phone loaded to my home-screen, but then froze and shut off.
If I plug my phone into my computer through the USB the phone connects for a second, and then disconnects. I've tried with both the battery in and out.
I've also tried re-installing the OS through the loader app as mentioned (http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-12-how-reload-operating-system-nuked-blackberry), and through a force connect with desktop manager (by hitting update button when desktop manager tries to connect with my phone when I first plug it in to my computer, before it resets and disconnects). Both times the phone starts to load the OS, but when it comes to re-initialize the phone, it'll disconnect, then reconnect, but then after 4-5 seconds dissconnect again, and so I get the "Application Loader was unable to connect with your device" error while the loader is trying to recconect to JVM...
Is there any hope for my phone? I love my torch and was realllly hoping to hold out until Blackberry releases their new phones in the new year.
I think I might try soaking the phone in 99% isopropanol in hopes in might be just some mineral build up from the rain water.
But I'd really appreciate any suggestions anyone has to help me try and get my phone working again.
    Thank you.

Hello...and apologies for the delayed reply!
Hopefully you already have resolved this...but just in case...
Applying power to your BB between it getting wet and doing the proper process (including the maximum waiting time) reduces the chances of success. Further, the only thing predictable about moisture intrusion into a BB (indeed, any electronic device) is that the results will be unpredictable. I've seen some come back up right away and be fine. I've seen others never work at all. I've seen still others run for a bit, and then die later. And every thing in between.
    Good luck!

  • IMac starts boot then cuts off

My iMac was working fine.  I got a message that the memory was almost full then it just cut off.  Now when I try to turn it on, it goes to the white screen, The booting bar comes up, but as it starts to boot, everything just cuts off.

You may have totally filled your internal HD adn need to move libraries such as you iTunes, iPhoto or iMovie libraries to an external HD. Please attempt to boot into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key when you hear the startup tone until a progress bar appears. If you can do that then move those libraries to an external HD and then attempt to restart.

  • Macbook pro wont start. grey screen then shuts off

I have been having some problems with my macbook when my battery would die and i would plug it in and try to turn it back on it would take forever to start back up. Sometimes i woudl have to unplug, take out the battery then put them back in and zap the pram and it would start. Then today it just started taking forever to restart so i shut it down and tried to restart now it starts goes to the grey screen and the little thing starts spinning and then about 5 sedc later it shuts itself down.
    PLEASE HELP

If the Apple Hardware test does not bring up any problems with the hardware, I would advise doing an archive and install before you zero out the drive and erase all of the data on it.
Some things to keep in mind:
If your computer shuts down while booted to the install disk (either the AHT or the installer) you're looking at a hardware problem.
If you need to erase and install or send it in for repair of a hardware problem, you will need to back up any data you do not want to lose before doing so. If you are unable to do backups, an apple store or authorized service provider can do data retrieval for you. Bear in mind this is an optional service and you would be charged a fee for data retrieval.

  • Lenovo G570 - Stays on Lenovo start up screen, then powers off

    Lenovo G570
    Model 4334
    Hi
Whenever i switch on my laptop it stays on the Lenovo start up screen for about 30 seconds, and then powers off. During the 30 seconds the laptop fans runs louder than usual but nothing else happens.
Ocassionally it does get past that stage but then takes a long time on the 'starting windows' screen.
I've used the onekey recovery to return it to my backup and even returned it to the factory settings but the problem persists.
I'm unsure of what to next and how the problem can be solved. Any Suggestions?
    Thanks.

try to load safe mode when you see lenovo logo at start-up. ( f8 )
if it works, press f8 again to load "last known good configuration"
otherwise, check your ram sticks ( remove/replace/swap ) and check if your hdd is working properly.
do you have any heating issue by the way? did you make changes recently?

  • Black screen on system start, before boot.

This machine had a noisy cooling fan for some time, then the screen suddenly went black but could see very dimmed images on it when using a flashlight.
Now the fan is quiet, but working and cooling, however the screen is entirely black after power up, the ESC to enter menu appears in orange color, then nothing at all. When pressing escape, it also goes entirely black. Can see the hard drive light flashing and have removed the drive to check it externally. The drive is fine. Different RAM makes no difference.
Is the graphics chip damaged and if so, can it be replaced in the Philippines at a service center?
    Thanks.

  • Mac Book pro start up page then turns off

My Mac book pro goes to the start page and shows the apple logo it will stay on it for about 30 seconds with a loading bar at the bottom and then it turns off. I try to restart it but it just does the same thing over again. Is there anything I can do to get it going again?

If you followed the article then that means you've completed an Erase and Install of your computer (one of the final steps).  If the symptom persists after an erase (without restoring from a backup), then the issue is harware in nature and you'll want to get it in for diagnosis:
"If the issue persists after you follow the above steps, you may wish to make an appointment with a Mac Genius at an Apple store, contact AppleCare via phone, or contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assistance."

  • It boots- then powers off

I've had my MacBook for a few months now, and so far I've not had any issues- except one.
    This happens intermittently.
I power on, and it boots. Then, whilst on the logon screen, it powers off. No shutdown, just power off, as though the battery has just been pulled out.
This happens when the battery is charged fully, so it's definately not low battery.
I'm not sure if it's related, but whilst watching a dvd using the DVD Player software, the same shutdown occurred when I moved the MacBook.
    Any thoughts?

There are many post in this forum about this problem called random shutdown.

  • System won't boot up constant spinning colored pinwheel

I installed Leopard on my Mac last night. After it finished I received the message that the install was successful. I noticed that my desktop items were not showing up so I restarted my computer. When it boots up now, I still don't get my desktop items. My icons all appear in the navigation bar at the bottom, but the little colored pinwheel spins and won't stop so I can't access anything.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Bill

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
First, I trust you made a backup of your previous system.
Did you repair HD and permissions prior to install?
Did you choose the default install (merge)? If so some of your older or non-compliant 3rd party apps may cause problems.
If you had any of these non-compliant apps in your "Login Items" list, that might be the problem.
Insert the Leopard DVD and reboot. When the system starts to boot (after the black screen) hold down the "C" key and you should wind up in the DVD. Skip past the Language screen and top left you will see a menu. Select Utilities and Disk Utility and repair HD and permissions.
    Remove DVD
Then reboot in the safe mode (hold down shift key at boot) and at the login screen click restart.
See if any of this helps. No guarantees.
Your profile tells us little of your computer. More data would be helpful.

  • [SOLVED] - Arch Boot Error: Unable to find Root Device /dev/sdb1

I had Arch running perfectly using /dev/sdb1 (versus Disk Label or UUID) and decided to do a update.  After the Update I can't boot
to a running system, and I get this error message:
ERROR: Unable to find root device /dev/sdb1
You are being dropped into a recovery shell.
Is there an easy way to convert to UUID or Disk Label since the latest Upgrade doesn't allow me to continue to use /dev/sdb1 ??
I'd prefer not to have to rebuild both USB Flash Drives to get functional systems.
    Any Help is greatly appreciated.
    Suggestions?
    Larry

  • Trying to set up time capsule but keep getting message stating airport utility was unable to find any airport wireless device. What do I do know?

Trying to set up my time capsule on my imac.
Keep getting message "Airport utility was unable to find any airport wireless devices."
    What do I do now?

When having difficulties accessing the Time Capsule (TC) via the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the TC wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the TC's LAN ports.
Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.
Finally, if you are attempting to access the TC via an Ethernet connection, be sure that your Ethernet port is NOT configured for Jumbo Frames, i.e., using an MTU of 9000+.
