MS 694D Pro (MS-6321) XP crashes with L2 cache

I have a single 800Mhz P3 CPU installed PC133 memory, and have OS/2 and Win 98 running without problems.  I have tried installing both Win XP and Win 2000 and both will frequently crash - usually I cannot get past the splash screen.
I have tried different memory (including individual memory DIMMS), another power supply & video, and every setting in the BIOS - even underclocking memory/CPU.  I have also tried disabling ACPI in Windows.  The only thing which will make the system stable is to disable the external cache.  This is obviously unacceptable.
The only other problems I am aware of with this machine is that a Matrox G400 Max would crash Win 98 if bus mastering was enabled for the video.  I also have to disable AGP FastWrite for OS/2 using the ScitechSoft drivers on my NVidia TI4200.
When windows crashes I get a BSOD with a MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION, though it is difficult to see the details because it reboots straight away even though disabled.
I have BIOS version 1.9 (6321v19.exe) - is this the latest suitable for my motherboard?  I have also tried windows with and without the latest 4in1 drivers.
Can you guys suggest *anything* to try, such as replacing components (CPU?), or is there some setting I can tweak inside windows?
I just don't understand why it works inside OS/2 but not in windows.  How can I disable the "advanced" feature that windows is using?
Thankyou for your help.
Mark

Ok, I've loaded PC Alert III off the original CD and run lots of tests - but keep in mind I've had to disable the L2 cache otherwise it won't boot.  For reference, it had CD/CDRW/SB Live/Floppy/1 HDD/Ethernet and NVidia Ti4200 plugged in, 2 * 256 DIMMS, and was overclocked and using all the fast settings.
First I ran my own tests to thrash the computer, 3D rendering/OpenGL, with concurrent network, HDD, floppy, CD and CDRW access.
The power settings were stable at any given time, though did show some fluctuation over my testing.
VCore1 Min 1.64 Max 1.70 Typically 1.65
VCore2 Min 2.02 Max 2.03 Typically 2.03
+5V Min 5.10 Max 5.18 Typically 5.13
3.3V Min 3.27 Max 3.29 Typically 3.27
+12V Min 11.80 Max 12.00 Typically 11.90
Fan Speed 4488 to 4615
During this time the temperature started at 34/30.   (Obviously there is no second CPU, but it might be some guide to the heat inside the case - though it has remained open for the last few months).  It rose to a peak of 44/34 and quickly dropped off when I killed my tests.
I then downloaded CPUBurn, I don't know if I didn't have the latest/best package but it only supported P6/K6 etc testing, so I ended up running all the tests over a couple of hours.  BurnP6 got the temperature up to 51/35 with power on 1.63/2.02/5.08/3.29/12.10.  With BurnMMX & BurnBX  I ran two tests, with 2K memory size and 64M memory size.  I noticed with the 2K test VCore1 was 1.63 and +12V was 12.10.  When switching to 64M it immediately changed to VCore1 1.70 and +12V of 11.80.  This of course changed back when I killed the test.
In summary, it is a pity I can't boot with L2 cache enabled.  If I get keen, I may wipe Win 2000 and reinstall Win 98 to try PC Alert under that - or is there OS/2 software that will get the VIA motherboard info?  Do you think these tests or other tests would be beneficial under Win 98?
Are the deviation in voltages that I observed in a normal range?
In retrospect during the boot phase - particularly when using Safe Mode, how much concurrent device access does it do that will drain the system?
Can I get Windows 2000 to display device driver names on the screen or actually get something meaningful from the bootlog to track down what it is doing when it dies?
Any thoughts welcome.
Thanks - Mark

  • Need help with 694D Pro (MS-6321 ver 1.0)

Hi there, I'm having problems with my 694D Pro, I have installed 2x Piii 1Ghz at 133 x 7,5 (auto-detect). RedHat 8.0 smp mode doesn't boot, but hangs during boot, single cpu boot works, Mandrake 9.0 boots with 1 cpu in smp mode, Windows XP only shows 1 cpu in the taskmanager graphs, 2 are listed in device manager, what is wrong?
I'm not able to boot in smp mode in Lunix...

Some comments.  For Windows XP Pro to work correctly with SMP, you need to make sure to install it (XP) after both processors are in place.  If you do not, it will install a single-processor kernel.  Other than that, I have no clue why it would only use one processor.
As for Redhat/Linux, the default kernel that they provide has problems with the promise raid controller on this board.  I would suggest getting someone to compile a custom kernel for you and using that.  It makes it a pain to install as you can't just boot into their install CD, but it is very possible (I've done it too many times ).
If Mandrake 9.0 works, (haven't tried that one) then install with that, then build your own custom kernel.  Then you'll have both processors up and running.
As far as kernel configuration goes, make sure you disable APM and ACPI (yes!), enable Promise PDC20265 support and, if you like, software raid support.  I think both of these are marked EXPERIMENTAL, although both are very stable on my system.  Finally, of course, enable SMP
    Good luck.

  • Satellite Pro M10 freeze and crash with some programs

    Hi
    I have a Satellite Pro M10...
a few weeks ago it's freeze and crash with some programs like wmpayer, messenger... I delivered it in the authorized agent and they had not detected no problem.
Already I formatted it some times, but the problem continues.
Some ideia of what it can be?
    Thanks

    Hello,
Sounds to me like you could have a Motherboard problem. Formatting it takes away the chances of it being a software issue. Try taking out 1 stick of ram and testing it with that. If it continues to crash, take out that stick and try the other one. If it does it with both RAM then those are ok. HDD is not the culprit, so now it could either be processor or MB. Find a program to measure the heat of the notebook and run some heavy programs to make it overheat. If the temperature goes up and then it crashes, it could just be overheating. If it continues without overheating you either have a problematic CPU or MB. Hope this helps.

My macbook pro early2011 keep crashing with no reason. What can I do? Is this a sign of virus? It just started a few days ago.

    Un-install Avast and CleanMyMac2.
    Avast Un-install
You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.
    CleanMyMac - Uninstall
    CleanMyMac2 Un-install
After un-installing, run this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

  • Pro 7.2.3 crashes with korg microkontrol

    Please excuse newbie gaffs...
But Logic Pro 7.2.3 crashes when I try to use some factory modes with my Korg microkontrol. >Pots>Instrument Edit, Plug-In Edit, and Plug-In Setting all send it off the rails, other modes work fine.
I've installed Pro App support 4, trashed all the preferences, turned off my only 3rd party plug in with AU manager, rebooted to kingdom come...
Guess I was looking forward to integrated microkontrol support (at last) never really got on with the old Korg .lso file, and it would be nice to have hands-on with the plug-ins.
I gather www.opuslocus.com/lcxmu might be the answer but given there's supposed to be integrated support I'm a bit narked Logic doesn't want to play ball.
Anyone with any ideas? (Of course this may all be lost in the Logic 8 pandemonium but all wisdom gratefully received).

  • MacBook Pro (2011) 13" keeps crashing with Yosemite 10.10.2

My MacBook Pro8,1 (early 2011) "Core i7" 13" started crashing after I upgraded and installed the free Yosemite 10.10.2 from Apple.  Has anyone else with a similar model MacBook Pro laptop experienced this problem in general?  Problems with Yosemite started soon after the upgrade install... the startup would get to full boot up after several restarts then crash after a time.  At first I thought it was a conflict with other applications.  Then after days of trouble shooting and even changing to a new Samsung EVO 250 SSD the problem still recurred repeatedly.  I have re-installed the original install CD numerous times checking disk utility, partitions, etc. and got Snow Leopard 10.6.6 installed OK.  Then I would update all that I could clicking updates on the Apple menu icon up till OS 10.6.8 and some other applications.  Up till that things seemed to be OK.  As soon as I downloaded Yosemite OS 10.10.2 and installed it...then all the crashing problems began.  I could get into safe install every now again then restart only to get in a startup crash loop.  I've repeatedly check my new SSD with disk utility and volumes are OK.  I've run virus checks with no infection.  I've run a hardware test (provided on one of the original CDs) with only good result.  So I'm really baffled when my understanding is MacBook Pro of my vintage can accept OS 10.10.x as it doesn't appear to be OK on my laptop.  Perhaps it clashes with my virus checker (MacKeeper) or some other application.  Can anyone shed light on this problem or have a similar problem?

You probably have some software that you keep installing that is not compatible with Yosemite. The first thing you need to do is remove MacKeeper, which is a scam. See:
    Ongoing MacKeeper fraud
Beyond that, it's impossible to say what might be causing the problem without more information. I would suggest downloading EtreCheck:

Run it and post the report that it generates here.

  • Macbook Pro running slowly and crashing with sleep

Title says it all, really. Whenever I open my Macbook Pro, after closing it to sleep, I have to hard-reset my computer by holding down the power button. Occasionally this problem springs up if I manually have my computer sleep, but typically only when I close it. Additionally, recently it's started running quite slowly as well. I've tried verifying/repairing permissions on the boot disk, but "Repair volume" just does the same thing over and over when I try it. I have 4GB DDR3 RAM, a 2.7GHz DualCore Intel i7 processor, and the Intel HD3000 Graphics Card chipset. 500GB internal hard drive (not a Solid State Drive to my knowledge), of which a little more than half is used. I'm pretty sure my laptop is the 2011 model. I'm running OS 10.7.2, or whatever the latest official release happens to be. Any help would be appreciated, seeing as I close my laptop between classes during the day, and having to reboot it every class is incredibly obnoxious.

I can't provide screenshots at the moment. I live near UNH so I sent it in to them for a supposed hardware fix - I got an email today saying what they tried didn't do anything. I read somewhere about deleting a certain extension relating to power management of the CPU (AppleIntel______.kext), but I didn't get to try it before I sent my computer in, and I can't find that article again. The only thing I had recently installed was Poker Night at the Inventory (a game from Steam), but I installed that on a separate laptop with no issues (my dad's 15" MBP). The fresh Lion install did put me up to 1.7.3. My activity monitor shows like this, normally, only "kernel_task" is taking up 300% CPU and my entire little CPU-meter at the bottom is filled with red. This is a screenshot from my dad's Mac, right now, which is identical to mine except it's a 15" instead of a 13".

  • WinXP problems with MSI 694D Pro v1.0 (MS-6321)

Greetings, i have some serious problems with WinXP install with my "brand new" MSI 694D Pro, PCB Rev 1.0 motherboard.
Running with one cpu is just fine, installation and inside windows it's completly stable after chaning a few leaking caps.
However, if running with both cpus I have serious problems installing as well as running Windows.
Once I manged to get in, and then it was 100% 2xPrime95 stable for 6hours.
Latest BIOS, no issues with ram etc.
I narrowed the problem down (I think) to the ACPI identification of the secondary processor on startup. Is this a known problem to v1.0 PCB's of this board, is there a workaround, can one set the ACPI ID manually.
I'd prefer to run WinXP Pro SP1 on this computer, and sure hope I will not have to be forced to Win 2000 Pro for this issue.
Does anyone have any tips or workarounds?

    HEC 400w PSU
A handfull of HDD's and a few optical units.
WinXP Pro (early release without any SP on install), don't recall build atm sorry.
So far I have tried with diffrent ram, diffrent BIOS's, diffrent PSU's, inside and outside the case, Memtest86 error free, a horseload of diffrent BIOS settings, minimum hardware installed and most things in diffrent compinations.
I'm a hardware geek and is well versed in those checklists so I don't think I have missed anything and is pretty convinced that the other hardware is working as it should, I'm pretty lame on OS handeling thou.
    Anyone?

Everything was just fine once I was in WinXP, thats where I ran Prime95  ... But I only managed that once, I havn't managed to replicate that.
That once I installed with once CPU and the added then second one then rebooted. Realy wierd that I can't replicate that...
    EDIT;

  • Why does Logic Pro 8.0.1 update now crash with certain templates?

I just updated to Logic Pro 8.0.1. The previous version, Logic Pro 8.0 never had this problem.
Logic Pro 8.0.1 starts up and functions overall just fine. However, when I try to open the "Instruments" template or the "Guitar Tones" template, it crashes Logic Pro 8.0.1.
The "Empty Project" template opens and works just fine.
I have not changed the original installed templates whatsoever, and I have never had a RAM issue on this machine. These exact templates all worked perfectly with the previous version of Logic on this machine (Logic Pro 8.0). The problem only occurred after the update to Logic Pro 8.0.1.
For the template "Instruments," Logic Pro 8.0.1. tries to load the audio files for "Basic Synth Det.exs" and crashes on "3hook24.wav".
Yes, I have verified and repaired the hard drive, and yes I have verified and repaired permissions.
Does anyone know what the problem with Logic Pro 8.0.1 crashing with certain templates could be?

There should be a crash log, which you can view in the Console.app in your utilities folder. Look for 'Logic' logs. They are often arcane, but something obvious might jump out at you, like a certain plug in crashing etc.. If you look for the number of the thread that crashed, often there is an indication what brought Logic down in the listing details for that thread#.
+or the template "Instruments," Logic Pro 8.0.1. tries to load the audio files for "Basic Synth Det.exs" and crashes on "3hook24.wav".+
Did you check that this .wav file is still available (not corrupted) and plays OK in the finder?

  • 694D Pro-A (MSI-6321) issues

Just bought a 694D Pro-A v. 1.0 in retail box off Ebay.  There are several confusing issues that I would like to ask about.  This board has the "B" chipset version (so there is no separate ATA-100 chip),  no RAID, and onboard sound.  Running Dual PIII 700, 1 Gb SDRAM, 2 WD HD on primary IDE, and a Matsushita DVD and TEAC CD-ROM on the secondary IDE.  GeForce MX2 64Mb AGP graphics card.
    1)  The BIOS says v. 3.3 01/30/01 but the MSI website says that this version is only for the Pro-AR or -AIR?  But this board is NOT RAID equipped!
    2)  The system will not boot from a CD-ROM, even with it configured properly in the BIOS, where the same CD will boot on my other computers.  I found a note somewhere that says that some boot scriptors have problems because some older BIOS versions have a bug with regards to booting from CD.
    3)  I tried to FLASH the BIOS to v. 3.7 using an NTFS boot disk and following the appropriate directions on the website for non-FAT drives.  The FLASH utility started, and allowed me to save my old BIOS, but then nothing happened.  When I manually rebooted the old BIOS was still there.  There is no BIOS protection in the BIOS itself, and the pins that are supposed to be on jumper J5 (per the manual) to lock/unlock the BIOS do not exist!
    4)  The system will not restart, either by pushing the reset button or doing restart through either W2k or XP.  This also happened during set-up of those systems independently.  The only way to get the system to boot is to completely power it off and on again.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

No luck flashing the BIOS with the new boot disk.  I am able to get the flash utility to work, but it comes up with a message saying "flash type - unknown flash" and then when I try to install the BIOS it says "error message - unknown flash type"
I also tried the LiveBIOS auto-update, but it could not find a proper BIOS, despite the fact that the MSI website says all MS-63xx boards are supported, but there are not MS-6321 BIOS listed?
Is it even possible to flash this BIOS?

  • Dual CPU prob w/ MSI 694D Pro-AIR v1.0 (MS-6321)

I am having some difficulties with my MSI 694D Pro-AIR V1.0 (MS-6321). It will only boot up when one processor is installed (in CPU1 Socket).  Both CPU's work in CPU1, when only one processor is installed.  I haven't powered up the machine in over a year, but everything worked fine then.  I have tried different video cards, etc...  When I have two processors installed the DLED light alternates green from 3 to 4 continuously.  What does this mean?

Re-flashing BIOS does not seem to help the situation.  I am experiencing the same problem.  If I set the FSB manually to 66/83/100 with both processors installed the board will start POST and then freeze after memory is tested and '2 CPUs' is printed on the the screen, I am not able to get into the BIOS.  Motherboard works great with one processor (Either one).  I don't get it.  All of the other components check out (both processors, memory, and video adapter tested in a ASUS CUSL2-C), there MUST be a problem with the motherboard.  I am sending it in, unless you have any other suggestions.

  • Macbook pro early 2011 - overheat and crash with blue screen and glitches

    Hi
since last wednesday my MBP has started to freeze and then crash with bluescreen, glitches and so on...
Most of the time doesnt not restart with any command as is overheating as well.
I did a clean installation on friday night and i am now running mavericks and then again on sunday it start with all the above issue. At the moment i am able to restart only if i reset NVRAM each time, which i do not think is really safe to do it everytime.
    i also tried
    Macs Fan Control
    gfxCardStatus
to fix but they doesn't help.
I read many customers are now experiencing similar problems with this mac as the GPU Amd is faulty.
APPLE SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE IT or will lose many custumers
I am now waiting to be seen at Genius bar on sunday, however i read about etrecheck in this related post

and meanwhile i want to hear your opinion...

  • Logic pro 9.1.7 crashes all the time with OSX 10.7.3

    Dear all
Since more or less 7 days my logic pro 9.1.7 crashes all the time. Is there a known bug with logic and the latest OSX?
According to the fact that I have
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
I am a little worried about possible hardware issues. Does somebody have an idea?
    Cheers
    -Marc

    Hi
I confirm that your are right:
Since 10.7.3 uses a newer version of 'ProKit'.
    Version 7 won't install.
    Maybe I found a workaround:
Curently I am running Logic in 64-bit mode. In my project (36 tracks) I was removing all the plug-in's and re-instanciate them (**** of a waste of time).... since then I did not have any crash.
I also found a issue with iZotope Products that use iLok. I am using iZotope Alloy as well as Ozone 5 advanced, Stutter Edit and Vinyl. All iZotope products produce memory errors that can be seen in the console. The only iZotope product that is running fine is Vinyl... and that plug-in is free and has no iLok security check.
That is the statement of iZotope Customer Service:
1.) Go to the following folder:
    (Macintosh HD)/Library/Application Support/iZotope/Alloy
2.) Delete "AuthAssistant.bundle" from that folder.
It is rare, but occasionally this package (which interfaces Alloy with iLok drivers) becomes corrupted on some systems.  If you use iLok you will need to use Challenge/Response authorization, but deleting this may prevent instability.
    Hope that helps
    Cheers
    -Marc
PS: I would have deleted the unnecessary error stuff to make it more readable... but I didn't fgure out how to change a posted message. Sorry.

Only Apple could hamstring and tie Mac OS to Windows. There isn't any other than whether you can download the drivers into Windows (you can) but Apple puts a block on the installer setup even if your mac does not support it.
Windows 7 needs at least Boot Camp 3.1 and 3.3 is what you should already have. And you are not getting security updates if you don't have at least 10.6.8 as was pointed out.  --- you arent using Software Update as you should. And you should backup and clone Mac (and Windows) as well.
You need Mountain Lion to use Boot Camp 5.x which supports Windows 7 & 8 and 64-bit.
I would upgrade to Lion if you can realizing that Rosetta and PowerPC are no longer supported though.

Is there a download of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software if I'm not using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.3?
Yes, you can download the Boot Camp 5 Support Software here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638
How do I use the Boot Camp 5 Support Software I downloaded from the web page?
The download file is a .zip file. Double click it to uncompress it.
Double-click the Boot Camp disk image.
Copy the Boot Camp and "$WinPEDriver$" folders to the root level of a USB flash drive or hard drive that is formatted with the FAT file system (see question below for steps on how to format).
Install Windows, leaving the flash or hard drive attached to the USB port of your Mac.
Installation of the drivers can take a few minutes. Don't interrupt the installation process. A completion dialog box will appear when everything is installed. Click Finish when the dialog appears.
When your system restarts your Windows 8 installation is done.
Note: If the flash drive or hard drive was not attached when you installed Windows and was inserted after restarting into Windows 8, double-click the Boot Camp folder, then locate and double click the "setup.exe" file to start the installation of the Boot Camp 5 Support Software.
How do I format USB media to the FAT file system?
Use Disk Utility to format a disk to use with a Windows computer. Here's how:
Important: Formatting a disk erases all the files on it. Copy any files you want to save to another disk before formatting the disk.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the disk you want to format for use with Windows computers.
Click Erase, and choose one of the following from the Format pop-up menu:
If the size of the disk is 32 GB or less, choose MS-DOS (FAT).
If the size of the disk is over 32 GB, choose ExFAT.
Type a name for the disk. The maximum length is 11 characters.
Click the Erase button and then click Erase again.
Which versions of Windows are supported with Boot Camp 5?
64-bit versions of Windows 8 and Windows 7 are supported using the Boot Camp 5 Support Software. If you need to use a 32-bit version, you need to use Boot Camp 4 Support Software, and you must use Windows 7. 32-bit versions of Windows 8 are not supported via Boot Camp. Fresh install with all older itunes un-installed as well as other Apple software.
Now cannot get any songs, videos, or even scan library folder for songs to work on the computer.
itunes just simply crashes with no error comments.
This is itunes 10.5 on a Windows 7 Pro system.

Same here, though on XP. Have tried cleaning registry, reinstalling, deleting preferences. Created a new user with no library and I have the problem there, too, so it's not the library.
Is there no one to call about this??
