MS-7666 motherboard no boot up

I've got quite a problem. Here is what I have:
CPU: Intel i7 950
MB: Xpower Big Bang MS-7666
RAM: OCZ gold series DDR3 PC3-10666 6GB (will run 12GB in the future)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
For my problem, I think that is just about all you need to know for now.
I just finished assembling my computer. I started the computer for the 1st time.
Seems like everything was fine, but my USB keyboard was not quite working. Mouse did.
So, i reach behind the computer and pulled the USB cable out and attempted to plug it in another port.
As i try plugging it in, i hear a spark, the computer completely shuts down and i smell something burning.
I had my window open right next to me at the time and thought it could have been one of the neighbors.
I thought i should let my older brother take a look the next day to make sure that i installed everything correctly, so i unplugged the computer and waited for him the next night at around 1AM.
There were two cables that weren't plugged in, but he said it was fine if i hadn't had them in.
We then tried to start it up this time, nothing. He said he would look at it later, but i can't take his word for it. His idea of being thee in a minute means you have at least an hour of waiting ahead of you if he even remembers...
If i attempt to start up my computer now, my screen does not receive any signal from the computer.
I did notice there was a debug LED and it stops every time i start it up at E8.
I tried letting it run a little longer just to see if it would get past that, but after about 2 minutes nothing.
I then tried plugging in the USB mouse and Keyboard, but then the same spark happened again and then immediate shut down.
It got closer and smelled it like it was burning again.
I have tried clearing the CMOS, running it with only 1x2GB stick, and removing all other USB ports from the front.
I have not had a boot up since the first time now.
I will talk to tech support tomorrow and take a closer look with my brother.
If anyone has any suggestions, i am willing to try them out. If you need any other information, i will try to provide it.
Sorry for the long thread, but i have been out of a computer for 2 months now.
-Thanks!

Well, the barebones boot didn't work, technical support said to return it and my brother actually looked at it and agreed that it needs to be replaced. Next board is gonna be something i can find a little easier but just about as good.
Too bad i couldn't use this board. For something that said "military class" and "top quality components" i definitely do not agree. Well, thanks for everyone's suggestions, but i could not get wither to work for me.
Whoever the moderator is, you can close this thread.
Not closing this thread as there's some wrong information in your post on the idea of "military class" and "top quality components".
Please understand that what happened to your system is probably a short circuit issue. When it comes to electricity spikes and uncontrolled voltages, don't expect things not to die or get fried. "Military class" and "top quality components" probably means longer lifespan under normal usage, suitable for overclocking.
It just like a car crash, it does not mean that crashing a well built and solid supercar would not kill the driver inside when it comes to accidents.

  • A78M-E35 motherboard not booting!

Hello! I have problem with MSI A78M-E35 motherboard. I installed CPU, one memory stick and GPU, plugged all wires (ATX 24 pin and 4 pic for CPU), also front panel connectors.
    Board: MSI A78M-E35 (S/N 601-7721-150B1401110990)
    Processor: AMD Athlon X4 860K 3.7GHz/4MB FM2+
Video: NVidia GeForce 8600 GT 512 MB 128 bit
    DIMM: Kingston DDR3-1866 4096MB PC3-14900 HyperX FURY
It's start spinning fans, but no boot next. Just a black screen. Please help, what version of bios my motherboard have?

without a supported CPU installed you have very little chance of being able to flash the board unless its done VIA a SPI flash programmer hooked upto JSPI1 on the board near the BIOS chip!
so you only have 3 ways to get it fixed:
1: RMA the board to MSI to get it reflashed
2: find a shop near you that can do a SPI flash of a board
3: borrow a supported CPU to get it to post so you can perform a flash
(if you can make a USB stick with the updated BIOS file on it and place it into a USB 2.0 port on the board it may be able to blind flash to the newer version but its not very likely to work but you could give that a go!)

So i just baught my new amd athlon  64 3000 +with a msi k8mm3 mainboared. when i finshed installing it and booted it up it detects both hard drives and all the memory. then it says "loading dmi pool .........." then the maxtor drive overlay splash appears. after that it goes to where you can select to start in safe mode and what ever you select it loads for a second and then restarts and does the same thing again. i've tried changing the power supply, leads, reset the cmos and unplugged all unnessery equipment but it still does it. any help will be appreciated.

If this is a current system in where you had Windows installed and you just replaced those parts, then you will have to do a repair/install of windows due to different chipset drivers and whatnot. This might prevent you from having to do a complete format/re-install. Otherwise you might have to completely format your system. No other way around it.

If it's a multi-bios system, make sure the bios version on both chip are the same.

    Hi,
I think I fixed the USB issue.  I just removed the old NEC USB 3 driver and use only the Intel uSB 3 driver and it has no problems with my front usb ports now.
I also installed the killer network driver only without suite and it works great.

  • KT4V-L motherboard won't boot

    Hello
This n3wb is having major problems getting this motherboard to boot with a graphics card installed. Bought the mb expectng to be able to use a spare gc i had lying around. But no joy - fan spins for a split second and nothing happens. Took the gc out and it booted okay giving some POST beeps.
So went to a store to get a new gc to see if that would work - it did (but i didn't want to have pay for a new gc so i took it back). Have since tried about 3 different gc's i borrowed off friends - MB don't work with any of them - tied resetting the CMOS aswell with no joy.
So i admitted defeat, went back to the shop and bought the same new gc that i'd tried earlier but now this doesn't work either. Also, now when booting without a gc installed it doesn't give me any beeps but does bootup
Anyone know whats happened - i' been pretty careful for static etc and don't think i could have harmed anything
    thanks

  • MSI 970a-g46 motherboard starts up but doesn't display anything.

Hello, I'm having problems with a new motherboard I got from Amazon, specifically the 970a-g46. The following are my specs in use with this motherboard:
    CPU: AMD Phenom 2 x4 965
    GPU: nVidia GeForce 560 GTX
Ram: 8gb Kingston HyperX Fury 1866mhz.
    PSU: Corsair 650TX (650 Watts)
Compatability-wise, everything checks out so I wasn't expecting problems at first. All the other parts excluding the ram I've used before. Here's exactly what happens:
I power up the computer after everything is installed and connected. The 4 phase LEDs turn on which tell me the CPU is powered up and working (so I assume). I don't get any beeps or buzzs mainly because I don't see any speaker/buzzer on this board. The monitor blinks and while it is connected to my GPU, it doesn't display anything, it's just a black screen. I can leave it on for a few minutes and I'll still not see anything happen. An important observation here is that my keyboard which has LEDs will turn on after a short period of time in boot-up (with my older set-up that is). This does not happen ever regardless of how long I leave my computer on on this new mobo.
I've gone over and checked/tested numerous things:
    * The PCI-E and ATX cables for the GPU, motherboard and CPU are all connected and secured (I've tried both 4-pin and 8-pin connections for the CPU, neither help).
    * I've tried jumping the CMOS multiple times to no avail.
    * I tested the ram on another computer and it worked just fine on that one.
    * I've tested the motherboard without a GPU and it still does nothing (though I think that's because this motherboard doesnt have its own integrated GPU for some reason).
So far the only possible reasons why my computer is not working is because of my PSU (very unlikely as it's only a year old and it's a Corsair, which I've heard is very reliable in the long-run), GPU (It is quite a few years old but even without the GPU my computer still doesn't go past boot-up), CPU (possible due to its age and how many freaking time I've reseated it (probably around 8 times) so I wouldn't doubt it, but before I put it into this motherboard I did check its pins and they were all there and placed nice and smoothly into the socket.) and finally the motherboard (it's possible that this is just a defected motherboard and giving me a super hard time which would be a first in all the years I"ve spent computer building).
The best case scenario of course is me giving some kind of oversight to how I transferred over the parts and connectors. I might've missed something obvious to please any advice/insight on how I can solve this problem would be greatly appreciated
EDIT: Some other things I did but forgot to mention:
    * Checked ground nut things and ensured they matched the specifications of the motherboard ATX; only 6 are under the board and each one is aligned up with the holes on the board as designed.
    * Tried booting up without powering the CPU. Only one phase LED light came on, still the same problem (for an obvious reason this time now).
    * Re-seated GPU multiple times, re-connected cables multiple times.
What I have NOT done is re-seat the CPU because I am almost out of acetone so I would need to get another supply of that which won't be until tomorrow. I also have not re-seated everything back on my older motherboard to check if it still works. Tomorrow I'll most likely do that and if I find that the old motherboard works flawlessly then that tells me that the new motherboard I got is either defected or there's some compatability issue I"m missed out on.
EDIT 2: Just found a speaker and plugged it into the motherboard. Booted it up and I got no beeps whatsoever. So this mobo is giving me no video activity (there is a signal it's just blank), and no beeps from the motherboard. I have no idea what that could mean at this point.
EDIT 3: I decided to test a few things with the new speaker I just got. First I removed ram and tried running, I got 3 beeps which I assume is the beep sequence of faulty/no ram. Removed the power to CPU and the GPU itself individually, gave no beeps this time.

What's the serial number of your MB? Needed to determine what BIOS may be on the MB. Exactly which version of the CPU is it? There were several different 965 CPUs and they required different BIOS versions, 1.2, 1.9,2.2 depending on which CPU you actually have.
Also another problem may be that native memory supported by your CPU is DDR3-1333, not 1866
None of the supported CPUs have integrated graphics, any MB graphics would be in the chipset, not CPU. Examples would be 785G, 880G
Thank you very much rhradacut! The problem was that the mobo for whatever reason was forcing 1866mhz on my CPU when it only supported up to 1600mhz. I had to install a spare ddr3 module to downclock it so that I could access the BIOS and manually set the DRAM timing to 1600mhz for it to work. That's a very strange problem that I figured would've been auto-resolved by the hardware, and would also be a big problem if I didn't have any spare DDR3 ram to work with.
Once again thanks for helping out on solving my problem.

  • Blank screen after a change in the motherboard's Bios

    Hi,
Recently, I have bought a MSI motherboard - 865PE Neo2 FIS2R. The computer works fine after I installed all the components and applications (including Windows XP [included Service Pack 1], Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility and all the drivers), as well as updating the bios to the most recent version.
However, after I changed one of the bios settings as follows:
    1. Select Frequency/Voltage Control.
    2. Select Performance Mode
    3. Select Ultra-Turbo
then I try to quit and choose Exit & Save Changes and press the Enter key on the keyboard. Immediately after, the screen fails to show anything.
The reset button on the computer case also fails to response (the reset button works before this incident). So, I shut down the computer, wait for a while and then power it up again, the monitor still does not show anything. Also, I do not hear any special beep sound. At that time, all the fans in the case (including CPU fan, system fans, power fans and video card fan) are moving. Here are the things that I have also tried:
    1) I have tried the monitor and video card separately on another computer and both the monitor and video card work fine.
    2) Also, I have tried to clear the CMOS following the procedure mentioned in the manual jumper but the screen still fails to show anything.
    Here is my computer's configuration:
    Motherboard  :  865PE Neo2 FIS2R (Bios version 1.4)
    CPU :           Intel Pentium 4 2.8CGHz (800 FSB)
    Memory :        Crucial PC3200 512MB CL3 (two of these)
Graphic card :  128MB Crucial Radeon 9800 Pro
    Hard disk :     IBM DTLA-307030
Case :          Thermaltake Xaser III V1000A Black
    Power Supply :  TruePower 380 12V AC 380W ATX TRUE380PGB
Therefore, may I know if the problem is solvable and what caused the problem. Also, I have just bought the motherboard for about 2 weeks, should I go back to the retailer to get a replacement?
Thank you anyone whom may help.

The difference in the performance modes above SLOW is the DRAM SPD timings used ...seems yours is unstable at the Ultra-turbo settings (you may be able to use this setting if you increase your DDR voltage slightly though (I use 2.7v for my CORSAIR)) ...only trouble is gaining access to the BIOS to do this
A few things you can try:-
Use only a single stick of memory -go into BIOS and increase the DDR voltage or reduce the performance setting
If that fails and you have another type of DDR available try using a single stick of that instead (DDR 2700 has worked for me in the past) ...this will force your motherboard to boot at the SLOW timings -you can then enter the bios and increase the DDR voltage, save, shutdown and reinstall your memory.
Try booting with the "Insert" key pressed to force the BIOS defaults to be used
Remove the power cord press the "start" button a few times (to discharge any power left in the PSU) remove the CMOS battery and set the jumper to the "CLEAR" position ...have a cup of tea (or coffee) ...reset the jumper, install the battery, insert the power cord, cross your fingers and BOOT?

  • 915GM speedster motherboard for Pentium M mobile CPU's confusion

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone could advise me, the motherboard has a jumper J6 to alter the cpu voltage between 1.5 volts and 1.8. But none of the pentium M processors use these voltages (they are between 1volt and 1.48).
What do people set this too. Also regarding this jumper which is the number one pin? there are no markings at all on the motherboard. Do I assume that the drawing showing the settings in the manual is orientated correctly, in relation to the motherboard layout drawing. I am unable to get the motherboard to boot properly, the most I can get is a logo page for a few seconds before the board shuts down. This is with a 1.8Ghz pentium M dothan. With other cpu's the board is dead.
I have tried the following without success.
two different power supplys (both known good ones of more than adequate wattage)
    4 different CPU's 1.8, 1.6, 1.5Ghz, pentium M's  all 400Mhz FSB .nd a Celeron M 1.4.
both ddr 2 and ddr 1 memory (I know you can only use one type at once)
Could anyone having this board please let me know the settings they have used for jumpers J4,J5 and J6
and which CPU they are using.
I am waiting delivery of some 533 FSB pentium M,s so hopefully I will have more luck. I have always had good results with MSI boards and want to be sure before I return it.
    Thanks.

I believe I have resolved the problem. The board was doing a thermal shutdown. I must admit to not being familiar with Intel Pentium P4 boards, When they were current I always bought AMD Athlons for cost and performance reasons.
The board has what I believe to be a standard P4 heatsink mount, so I used a what I believe was a standard p4 heatsink and fan. But the heatsink was not contacting the cpu, I have now used another heatsink with a raised "Platform" on the base. I am certain this is contacting the CPU as I can feel it rocking on the the CPU itself before I fit the retaining clamps. The other heatsink had a totally flat bottom so was sitting on the mounting frame not the CPU. I am very lucky that the thermal cutout worked, I sincerely hope this has prevented any damage to the CPU. If it had been an Athlon I would have been in the market for a new CPU as I don't think they had a thermal cutout. The board has been displaying the BIOS PC health status all the time I have been writing this and it has settled to a steady 36 degree CPU temperature. I feel foolish that I did not work this out sooner, I do not want to break things. Although the chip was cheap enough (I got a batch of 4 for £7.71 in total including postage) I pride myself in taking care and doing a good job. I can only say in my defence that the heatsink mounting frame prevented me from seeing if the heatsink was seated correctly. I will be building this board up as a media center, the low noise and power consumption will be ideal. I may look to add a basic passively cooled graphics card so that I can have an HDMI output to connect to my TFT telly.
I very much appreciate your help and I will try to support this forum in the future.
                                                                                                                              Cheers Wilfy

  • Choice of primary/boot drive when 2 drives are installed

    Hi,
I purchased machine (m7-j120dx) with spindle-HD installed in HDD1 slot., and upgraded by adding SSD in HHD2 slot.
I cannot find in BIOS setup controls to designate drive in my SSD (located in HHD2 slot) as boot drive.
It seems the choice of boot drive does not exist.
Is it hard coded in BIOS to use drive connected to HDD1 connector (on motherboard) as boot?
I was hoping to solve this in software, rather that physically move the drives around
(to make my SSD boot, and HD secondary).
Is the physical switch of drives is necessary?
    Thank you.

Yeah you have to switch them. It is hard wired to use only the primary bay drive as the bootable.

  • Problems booting from onboard SATA with PCI SATA controller installed

I have a K7N2 Delta-ILSR motherboard (BIOS v 7.8), and my Windows XP installation is on a single drive attached to the onboard Promise 378 SATA RAID controller.  I have a PCI Promise TX2200 SATA RAID controller installed, currently in PCI slot 5.  The OS boots normally off the onboard controller if I do not have my RAID0 array attached to the PCI controller, but I get disk boot failure messages if I have the RAID0 attached to the Promise TX2200.
I have tried putting the PCI controller in different slots to change IRQ channel routing, tried changing boot order in the BIOS, and even tried assigning specific IRQ priorities to the slot with the Promise TX2200.
My basic question is this:  how do I get this motherboard to boot from the onboard controller while I have my RAID0 attached to the add-on PCI controller?

Well, Promise got back to me.  They were insightful enough to tell me what I already knew and that they didn't support what I was trying to do:

Case Problem:   I have an MSI K7N2 Delta-ILSR Socket A motherboard with an onboard Promise FastTrack 376 SATA RAID controller. I wish to continue booting my OS from a single SATA drive on this controller, while using a RAID0 array on my FastTrack TX2200 controller. When the TX2200 is installed and the array is attached, it is detected as C: by the motherboard BIOS and the active boot drive as D:. The TX2200 is detected during boot (after POST) first, the onboard contoller second. I have tested the TX2200 in...
Case Solution:   Hi Sorry for the late reply. Are you by any chance running both the FT 376 embedded controller along with the FT TX2200 if so than you will run into bios or driver conflict when both controllers in the system. Promise only recommend and support one cards pre system. Thank you.
    ... and MSI
    Quote
Thank you for contacting MSI Technical Support.
As onboard SATA controller and PCI controller are both promise. It exits compatibility between them. You could try the following procedures to check if they could solve the issue:
    1. Please contact the PCI card vendor to ask if there is relative firmware update
    2. Please disable all the onboard devices which you don't want to use in bios setup.
    3. You could try different MB bios version to have a check. You could download these versions from here.
Please feel free to let us know if you still have any further issues or inquiries
So that leaves me 3... downgrading my BIOS is not worth the risk just to make this work.  Looks like its time for a full migration plan so this issue becomes moot.

I don't agree with your comment of Infineon memory being "lousy".  I have very similar memory that you do and my rig is very stable (at the moment)(knock on wood).  This memory is on the compatibilty approved list by nForce; that's why I chose this dual channel kit.
It sounds like your problem was bios settings related with your cpu/memory ratio (1:1).  The nForce2 chipset runs more stable with this setting, than running memory at 400FSB while the cpu runs at 333FSB.  I have learned this by reading a large amount of posts in these forums!

  • Problems with MSI K9N6PGM2-V2 Motherboard in a barebone package

    Hi:
I bought a MSI K9N6PGM2-V2 Motherboard and AMD Athlon X2 5200+ AD5200OCK22GM Processor with a DiabloTek CPA-0280 Elite ATX Mid Tower Case from TigerDirect. This is their so-called barebone package.
Unfortunately, I did not receive the CPU cooler so I bought a FAN from a computer store. Now, I cannot seem to make the system work.
    I have several questions.
First, the JPWR2 power connector on the MSI is 4-pin.  However, I cannot find a 4-pin power cable from the DiabloTek case. There is one cable that has 6-pin and it can fit into the JPWR2. Unfortunately, when I turn on the power, the Motherboard does not boot.
Second, I have an elder case, which does have a 4-pin power cable and the motherboard does boot. However, I do not see the BIOS in the screen.
I guess that I must have done many wrong things there.
Could someone who is familar with this motherboard pelase give me some suggestions?
    Thank you very much,
    Cheers,

Fan? You need a heatsink with a fan to cool the CPU down, just a fan won't do it.
As for the case + PSU: +12V: 30A that isn't a lot, but should show a BIOS if you didn't insert some fancy videocard.
And for the 6pin, that's a PCIe powerconnector!!!
According to TigerDirect: 1x 4+4 Pin Motherboard Connector +12V  so you have the proper connector.
But you may have blown something to pieces by gambling on the connections.
Else? Nothing left to say but: >>Posting Guide<<

A good 350W would have at least +12V~20A.
