MS-9247 and Zero Channel Raid Controller

The MSI 9214 Servers did well with adaptec zero channel raid controllers (e.g. 2010S).
But they are not available anymore. The successor is the MSI-9247 server. Is there
any zero channel raid controller that will work with the mainboard in these servers

Doesn't the documentation on the board say anything?  Go to the products page and download the manual, look through the compatible hardwares list.  Just a thought..

  • RD330 - using PCIe-based SSD and on-board RAID controller at the same time?

I've got a RD330 (4304-E1U) with the on-motherboard RAID controller and an OCZ Z-Drive R4 PCIe-based SSD.  Basically the SSD looks to the system like a PCIe SATA controller with a single SATA disk attached.  If I leave the on-board RAID disabled in the BIOS (Setup -> Advanced -> Sata/SAS Configuration -> Disable SCU Devices=ENABLED), then the system sees the OCZ drive just fine and I can select it as my boot device.  Works like a champ, screaming fast.
I *also* need access to the disks attached to the built-in SAS backplane on the server, but if the on-board RAID is turned off, then you can't access those disks.  When you go into the BIOS setup and turn on the on-board RAID (Setup -> Advanced -> SATA/SAS Configuration -> Disable SCU Devices=DISABLED), then the LSI RAID array configuration shows up during POST (as expected) but the OCZ messages do NOT appear during POST, and the OCZ no longer shows up in the BIOS as a boot device.  It's like the SSD isn't even there when the on-board RAID is turned on.
I don't really need any RAID functionality on those disks, I just need access to them from the OS, but I need to boot from the SSD in the PCIe slot.  Is there a way for both the on-board RAID controller *AND* an additional PCIe disk controller to be active at the same time?

I have had a 2.0 USB hub connected to the USP port on my AEBS for almost a year for a printer and a HD. Initially I had intermittent connectivity to the HD but never the printer. As Apple upgraded the software/firmware for the AEBS, the problems have stopped. Reliability has been 100% for several months. Go for it.

  • On-board RAID and PCI RAID controller

    Hello everybody,
I am new to the forum. So, please excuse me if that topic was already covered...
I have MSI MAX2-LR (MS-6398E) board. It works just fine, no problem so far. Though I have 2 problems with add-on cards:
    1.  I was planning to use on-board RAID and additional PCI RAID controller = FastTrack 100 TX2 to cover 6 hard drives into 2 mirrored sets: 4drives one and 2 drives the other.
It doesn't work! I can use either on-board RAID or PCI RAID. As soon as I have any drive connected to on-board RAID, the PCI RAID disappeares. If I have no drives connected to on-board RAID, I can see both RAID controllers, they have different I/O and IRQs, and PCI RAID is working just fine. If only I connect one drive to the on-board RAID, it gets activated on startup, and the other one disappeares. :O
I believe it's a BIOS bug. I wander, if that can be fixed easily????? :D
    2. I have a new Matrox Video card = Parhelia. It doesn't work in AGP slot! System doesn't recognize it, and beeps non-stop. I am dealing with Matrox Tech Support on that matter.  ?(
Maybe, it's a known issue, and somebody can save me time by telling what's that about.
Appreciate any imput. Have a great weekend.!!! :]

Hey I also have the same Raid card and also the Matrox Parhelia, and I see that you also have some problems with the card I got also problems with the card, but they couldnt help me at theire forums (http://forum.matrox.com/mgaforum/Forum10/HTML/005085.html), I hope we have got more luck here  :D

  • StorEge A1000 + PC (with Mylex960 Raid Controller)

    PC = PIII / 800EB / 256MB / 20GB
    Raid card = Mylex DAC960
    StorEdge = A1000 with 3 x 18Gb drives loaded.
Wehn Mylex scans for a new scsi device, Storedge A1000 can't be traced/probed. I tried this with HP scsi box and were able to probe the external devices but for Sun Storedge A1000 it was not successfull.
Any advise on how I can probe/trace this external device (Storedge A1000).
I am planning also to install solaris 10 (x86) and hopefully Solaris could detect the external storage (series of drives) at the application level. (cross finger)
    For your advise Gurus.
    Petalio

Can you describe the features and specifications of that SCSI card ?
    The A1000 array has a High-Voltage-Differential interface.
(See its link in the Sun System Handbook)
HVD is not common in the PeeCee universe.
The array already has a RAID controller in its chassis,
and will not work with a RAID controller SCSI card.
Any attempts to use a LVD card or a S/E card will just not work, either.
It would be invisible to the SCSI chain.
... then, additionally, you're going to need some sort of RAID control software
to administer the A1000 and its internal RAID controller.
if you do eventually get a compatible HBA, you also need to be aware
that functional support for the array was specifically dropped from Solaris 10.
You'd need to run Sol8 or Sol9 with RM6 software, and I cannot remember
whether RM6 was ever ported to x86 Solaris.
I fear you're just going to be out of luck,
and may need to get rid of the array (e.g. Ebay ?).

  • C-220M3 RAID controller

    Hello,
Cisco people has told me C-220M3 has to mandatory bring a RAID controller in it if you configure one HDD...actually Dynamic Configuration Tool doesn't let me configure a C220M3 server with one HDD if I don't add a RAID controller. I'm trying to find a technical explanation for that...as I recall, the old C-200M2 can be configured with one HDD and without any RAID controller at all, and that doesn't pose any problems.
    Any inputs on that?
    Thanks,

    Hi Dani,
the C200 server has a in-build RAID controller which you could use. However on a C220 there are no similar integrated modules available and you need to choose either a mezz or a PCI (LSI) RAID controller for RAID configuration.
here is the chapter from the configuration guide:

  • VT8327 RAID Controller overheating?

I have been reading a lot about the problems with corruption of SATA drives on KT6V-boards, as I have had similar problems myself. I have seen a lot of good suggestions about where the problem comes from. You can read about these in other threads.
I posted a reply in one of those about the temperature of the chipset, the KT600 AND the VT8327 RAID controller. As I understand it, the KT6V Delta-FIS2R has active chipset cooling while the lower models have passive cooling and the RAID-controller has no cooling.
I am beginning to wonder if these chips have a cooling problem, especially the RAID-controller, because it feels really hot to the touch!
So I would like to ask all you helpful people if your VT8327 chip is running hot, and do you think this could be a problem?
    *** WARNING ***
Touching the electrical components on your mainboard can lead to a static discharge that can cause serious damage!
So don't do it.... unless you're really curious, but don't say I didn't warn you!

Here is a list of 3rd party I/O options supported with Solaris:
    http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/ihvindex.html
I would have a tendancy to avoid this type of solution for Solaris/SPARC storage, storage units currently on the market running RAID controllers outperform the card type RAID, this is really the type of controller used for PC back office servers with multiple drives installed.

    Hi,
Was the card previously working in that machine? If it was and you have a G5 tower you could try the card in there. Here is a list of Apple fibre cards and cables which show what's compatible with what. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1769
The card should appear in the System Profiler under Fibre Channel and PCI Cards.

  • RAID set and JBOD on same controller card?

I'm planning to update my RAID from the current 4-disc software 0 in my MacPro to a RAID 5 with dedicated controller (for now) and here's what I'm planning (tentatively)
    • RAID 5 consisting of 8 discs, 4 inside 5.1 MacPro with MaxUpgrade's kit in use for SAS connectivity , and 4 more discs in a 1U rackmount SAS chassis, possibly OWC's new 'trayless' unit, or another similar chassis.
    • Areca RAID controller ARC-1880ix-12 is what I'm leaning towards at this time.
I don't have the cash or demand (yet) for a system in a huge expansion chassis and 24 drives, but my the main thing I want to know, (since I've never had this many discs to play around with before) is when I create an 8 disc RAID 5 Array for storage, can I also connect another external chassis to the controller as a JBOD unit and have those drives therein function independently, with swap capability of single volumes? This would be very handy for individual cleint-drive backups and would free up my eSATA interface for file ingest and more flexibility.
I do know I would have to get an adapter to run more than one external SAS connection cause the Card only has one External SAS port as is. I may go with a different card with more channels for more future expansion, but it will more than likely have more internal ports than external.

    l_elephant wrote:
your system is on that RAID0?
do you regularly clone your system, for when, (not in case), the RAID0 fails?
Yes, when working I backup the data ideally after every time I add footage to the RAID, if not at least once daily.
have you considered the added security of RAID6 (if your going to have that many drives . . .)
I have, and it will probably be the next step if I go to a RAID larger than 8 discs. IF I do start getting the need for 16+ I may go to a RAID 10.
when you mean storage, do you mean like archival, past projects type storage, or current working projects drive space?
Working projects. Also will look into LTO for archival in the future if the demand necessitates it.
can I also connect another external chassis to the controller as a JBOD unit and have those drives therein function independently, with swap capability of single volumes?
    yes
Thank you, this is the main question I had, do you have a specific experience such as this you would share?
I do know I would have to get an adapter to run more than one external SAS connection cause the Card only has one External SAS port as is. I may go with a different card with more channels for more future expansion, but it will more than likely have more internal ports than external.
you're describing SAS expander. You can easily have more than 200 drives connected.
No I'm describing a PCI plate SFF-8087 to SFF-8088 Adapter, like this one:
    http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sascablesadapters/AD8788-4.asp
Like I said, most of the cards I'm looking at have more internal 8087 ports than the external 8088 ports.
what kind of work are you doing? Vidéo, audio? One project at a time, or parallel projects? Alone or with others (colleagues, employees)? The Caldigit system looks nice for large teams of people.
This would be a mobile installation, with me as a single operator handling digital video footage, so this would be direct attached storage, no network interface necessary. Usually one project at a time, but if I get busier hopefully more than one.

  • Onboard promise raid-controller and promise add-on sata-controller

Can anybody help me with the following problem.
I have 4 SATA hard disks.
2 Western Digital Raptors and 2 Seagate Barracuda V of 80 gig.
I would like to do the following:
I would like to put the 2 raptors in raid-striping for my OS on my onboard raid-controller and use the 2 barracuda's for data and connect them the promise add-on card (promise ultra150 tx2).
I have the following with this config: the raid-controller is no problem but when i connect a hard-drive to the add-on card, windows won't boot anymore and i have no possibility in the bios to choose to boot from the raid-controller.
I'm using an MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard with the latest MSI-bios.

I'm having the same problem but I can't switch my drives. I have my 2 200 gig maxtors full of data that i can't let go of. I've installed a new silicon images pci card with 2 sata channels. if i hook up the drives both bios recognize the drives correctly but it tell me invalid system disk. pretty sure that it's reading the pci card, not seeing a os installed and not even looking at my onboard controller. I was told that i can change irq priority, but i can't get it right or it doesn't work. I can install os on pci card but would really rather not. I'm very happy with the setup i have for once.

  • Had to replace Xserve RAID controller and now I get Xsan Admin: ERROR: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1

I need some help, I had one of my five Xserve RAID boxes fail. The upper controller card needed to be replaced and so we replaced it. But now only one of my volumes is loading and I am seeing the following error in my Console.
7/18/12 9:23:18.550 AM Xsan Admin: ERROR: duplicate LUN label RAID1-Left1
This raid box holds three LUNs. the left is split into two with one being the metadata / Journal for the main volume and the 2nd being the same for my secondary volume. The right side of this box is the second volume while the remaining 4 RAID boxes are my main volume. Here is the rub, the main volume is using the left1 LUN and the secondary is left2. The left2 is the one that is not working and when I go into the LUN info the WWN number does not match the actual id on the raid box.
    HELP!!!!
    Thanks,
    Kevin Rosenthal

Did you try turning it off and on again? I mean, the full SAN shutdown/startup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4027
You're probably seeing "duplicate LUN labels" because the MDC has seen two LUNs with the same label but different serial numbers since it has been online. The serial number (which I think is based off the WWN) would have changed when the RAID controller changed. A reboot should fix that specific error message.
If the volume still doesn't start after rebooting, then you would want to check the cvlog for that volume.

  • H61M-P31 motherboard and RAID Controller

    Hi
I have a pc that I want use as a home server, and has the following hardware
    Mother board: H61M-P31
CPU:  Intel Pentium G620 2.6GHz Dual Core
    Memory: 8GB DDR3
    Hard disks 1x3GB, 2x2GB 1x1GB
    OS: Windows Home Server 2011
I have already made one expensive purchase of a RAID controller that didn’t fit the mother board and don’t want to do that again so I’m asking anyone who has any experience with this mother board  and/or RAID controllers what are my options, ideally I would want a 4port card.
Can anyone advise me on what to do.
    Thanks
    Chris

Was the card you purchased a PCI or PCIe model? if the one you got was PCI then of course it would not fit as there are no PCI slots. Get a PCIe version and it should fit in the lower black PCIe slot.
According to this it's PCI not PCIe

This statement is self explanatory, the firmware patches have an upgrade cycle.
3 Can you explain more about your issues? There are steps to be taken after initially creating a volume with raidctl so Solaris can use them, it is covered in a system Spectrum InfoDoc, did you login to Sunsolve?

  • Continues RAID Controller 2 Fibre LIP

I recently installed 7 500GB drives on an XRAID server then updating to RAID admin 1.5.1. With 6 drives in RAID 5 and one drive as a hot spare. Then during the initialization of the RAID 5 I received two errors claiming the 2nd channel card was down and cleared them manually and they havnt come back. Also the initilization of the drives took about 42 hours and after the 1.5.1 update there is a high pitched whining sound coming from the server!
But my main concern now is the constant RAID Controller 2 Fibre LIP warning. I do mean constant...about ever 10-12 seconds.
    Thanks:)

    >The XRAID is connected directly to the back of the Windows Server via a LSI Logix FC929 Fibre Channel Adapter using the same driver as the 1st Fibre Controller.
I vaguely recall some issue with Windows Server and LIP errors on the XServe RAID, but I don't recall what it was.
Did you have them before attaching the second RAID? Is only one controller complaining, or both?
Do you continue to get the errors if you disconnect the original array, leaving just the new one attached (this could indicate a loop problem when both controllers are attached).
It might also be worth checking out AlienRAID who have a lot of resources for running XServe RAID under 'other' OSes.
    >I cant tell the specific location of the whining sound. But it has to do with either the new drives or the load from the new drives spinning up causing the sound to come from the power supply because it starts after the system is powered on.
Do you have both PSUs powered? The PSUs are power-sharing, but if one of them fails the other picks up the load. It's designed more for failover, though, than normal operation, and it's just possible that a single PSU is working harder than it should to keep things running.
