  • MS Access alternative for Mac? Filemaker and Bento no longer available?

    Hi,
I need to create a database to track employee training, certifications, etc. Started working in Access but just realized that doesn't work on a Mac. I tried creating something in Excel but it is too much info to manage in a spreadsheet. I've looked into FileMaker and Bento but they no longer seem to be available. Any suggestions? I have Microsoft Office 2011 and I would need more than just read-only funtion in Access so Crossover/Parallels don't seem like a viable route.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Bento is gone, but FileMaker is still available. FileMaker 13 was just introduced in December.

Have loaded lion and now can't access office for mac or apple works as it says it does not support power pc applications, how can I acces them or better still reinstate them please?

MS-Office for Mac versions 2004 and older do not run in Lion since these are PPC-apps for which Apple has dropped support.
Free alternatives to open Word and Excel files:

how do i access word for mac on my macbook air?

Purchase it.  Here's one link to an Amazon site to buy one of the many Office configurations:
    http://www.amazon.com/Office-Mac-Home-Student-2011/dp/B003YCOJA8/ref=sr_1_3?s=so ftware&ie=UTF8&qid=1349217216&sr=1-3&keywords=office+for+mac
You would receive Office on a CD, and need a disk drive for your MacBook Air to access so you could download the software.

  • MS Access equivalent for Mac

    Hi there,
Does anyone know if there is a decent MS Access equivalent for Mac ... and please do not say FileMaker as it has a different interface and table management logic that I do not really understand (Is it good enough to make it worth trying to learn?)
If there is something that works like access (queries, multiple tables, relationships etc.) I would be very happy to take a look at it.
    Cheers

    Hi,
    start from here:
    http://guide.apple.com/
and search Software>Productivity and Utilities>Database and similar items
But remember: Filemaker IS the database for Mac and it is FAR better than Access.

  • Just updated to osx, can't access quicken for Mac anymore

I just uploaded OSX to my I-Mac. I like the upgrade but it does not support quicken for Mac 2007 and suddenly I cannot access it. I can purchase quicken essentials for Mac but need to know how I can access the old records and transfer them to the new program. The new upgrade will not open the old files. Do I need to remove the upgrade first?

Quicken has an upgrade for Qicken that will run on a Mac. It is not Quicken Essentials, as far as I know.

  • Powerpoint and word alternatives for mac

    Hi
I am poised to buy the MS office suite for Mac.
I use MS word and powerpoint on a daily basis.
I have tried open office but found it unreliable when opening documents on a pc (format chenges etc).
Is there any reliable alternative to the MS office?
I have read reports of MS office for mac being unstable but I have also read lots of reports contradicting this.
    Many thanks
    Paul

Office for Mac is very stable so your information is unreliable. However there are a number of alteratives, including Apple's iWorks suite of Numbers, Pages and Keynote and for web based alternatives a lot like LibreOffice which you can find by Googling it.

  • Exchange alternative for Mac Snow Leopard Server

I was wondering what are some good alternatives to Microsoft's Exchange service for use in the new Snow Leopard Server that will be coming out. I am aware that Snow Leopard Server offers open source for mail server, but I would like to go with an actual GUI interface with a third party software. Any suggestions would be great!

You will not be able to do any extensive management of Active Directory from with Mac OS X natively,
and considering the technology, it's best managed using the native Microsoft tools & technologies anyway. There are products that offer options for Mac management from/via AD - beyond what Apple provides and/or is possible by extending your schema, but that's _another matter entirely_.
"Closest thing" is really for you to decide, you will need to investigate the products and if they will meet your needs.
As I have stated, what we know will be available in & via Snow Leopard is what Apple has made known on its own preview pages.
If you needed to seriously know more you would have invested in a ADC Developer account and extensive testing but with the understanding you would be dealing with pre-release technology.
Past that, the two products that offer the most in terms of feature-set(s) are as I already noted:
    Kerio
    and
    Zimbra.
    Best of luck !

  • Photoshop alternative for Mac

    Hi
I bought Photoshop Elements 4.0 for Mac some time ago, but I never really liked the interface. I recently downloaded the trial for Photoshop Elements 6.0, but, though the interface is better, it's still not what I'm looking for.
So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some alternatives in approximately the same price range?
I know of Apple's Aperture, but as far as I'm aware it's more a program for making your camera images look perfect and not a program for adding effects and filters, making collages of several imgaes, etc., right?
    Thanks

Personally I'm with orangekay on the GIMP (and thanks for the morning laugh). The GIMP was built to run in Linux, and it has all the Linux sort of conventions for everything. It does not work remotely like any Mac program you have ever used, nor is it particularly like the Photoshop GUI. If you are used to Mac programs and Photoshop conventions you will have a lot of habits to break.
There is a version that has been tinkered with to be both more Mac-like and more Photoshop-like in its conventions, called GIMPshop. It is donationware. There is also a non-free version of GIMP that runs in the Mac GUI, as opposed to the regular GIMP which runs in X11, called MacGIMP.

    http://www.macgimp.org/

Try out the GIMP and see what you think. An interface is very much a matter of familiarity and taste. Perhaps you would like it.
You might also want to take a look the "new kid" which many people like (I didn't, but if you prefer the Elements6 interface to the older Photoshop interface you might). It's called Pixelmator:
    http://www.pixelmator.com/
It is in the same price range as Elements.

PS--Aperture is not an image editing program in the sense of making composites, applying special effects, and so on. It does basic corrections to color and lighting of digital photos, and is mainly a tool for organizing and batch processing massive numbers of digital photos.

  • Access Database for Mac-Replacement

What is the application for mac that is the most similar to Microsoft Access? I used to use it in my PC days, and it was so much easier to use than free mac solutions I've tried such as NeoOffice Database. I was hoping to find an app in the <100 range, so FileMaker was not an option for me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

FileMaker is so superior in every way to Access that Microsoft gave up updating Access for use with their Office suite for the Mac, but instead ensured that FileMaker works seemlessly with both Word and Excel. (being cross-platform, FileMaker also quickly became the database of choice on PCs.)
But you don't absolutely need the latest (and therefore most expensive) version of Filemaker. Any version from FM6 upwards will work with Office, as well as on OSX. Older versions are readily available on eBay for a song.

  • Tweetdeck alternative for Mac (mountain lion)

I used tweetdeck for twitter and facebook feeds, as well as posting.
Since tweetdeck killed facebook support, i'm looking for another alternative on mac that can handle both.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    By the way,
To uninstall it, this is in the upper left, not the upper right...
    Sorry...
Go to Messages in the upper left and choose "Uninstall Messages Beta"
The iChat or Buddies window hasn't changed.
You do not have to use FaceTime for your Video Chat.......
You can use FaceTime when you are in the Messages window if you choose.
Otherwise, the iChat window is the same.

  • Is there any alternative for Mac google drive?

    Hi,
just like many people here, i had numerous problems with Google drive over those 2 last years. i was looking for a reliable solution that work with PC and MAC.
Unfortunately Icloud is too locked up and we cannot easily drag and drop files to it just like for a google drive folder.
do you have any suggestions to replace Google drive on Mavericks?
I need something that will not make my mac unstable and will do its job.
    Thank you.

I use Dropbox since a few weeks and it works very reliable. You can drag and drop files to the Dropbox folder and you can also direct open files in a program.
By the way, iCloud also has its own directory on the Mac. It is under the user directory in
    Library/Mobile Documents/
In this directory there is a subdirectory for every app you have with iCloud. They have some odd names, but you can recognize whcih app uses which directory. So you can drag and drop with iCloud too.
