MS-DOS 6.22 under Hyper-V

My question is really 2-part. I have a temporary need for an MS-DOS VM on my Server 2008 (R1) x64 test machine, so I downloaded MS-DOS 6.22 from the TechNet subscription area and created 3 VFD files for each of the install floppies. I then created a new VM and proceeded to install DOS 6.22, only the message I got was...
"Setup cannot install MS-DOS 6.22 because there is no operating system on this computer. This product is the MS-DOS 6.22 Upgrade..."
Question 1) Why in the world would the TechNet version of MS-DOS be an UPGRADE version??? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Is a "non-upgrade" DOS 6.22 installer available?
Question 2) I read that Hyper-V doesn't support MS-DOS. Is this just because there are no integration services for it? I really don't need them for this test.

Hi,
Question 1) Why in the world would the TechNet version of MS-DOS be an UPGRADE version??? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Is a "non-upgrade" DOS 6.22 installer available?
>> First of all, MS-DOS is out of life. For the further research on MS-DOS upgrade version, I recommend that you Contact a representative so that you can get the most qualified pool of respondents. Thanks for your understanding.

Question 2) I read that Hyper-V doesn't support MS-DOS. Is this just because there are no integration services for it? I really don't need them for this test.
>> As I mentioned, MS-DOS is too old, it doesn’t make sense to support it on Hyper-V.

  • Ubuntu running under Hyper-V with high load

I'm running a VM for Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS under Hyper-V and with no web server or any other public server installed, the system load is 1.0
The VM is using a 75GB fixed VHD on its own partition (the hard drive is using raid 0).
Is this normal for running a linux OS under Hyper-V?
Here's what top shows (i restarted the vm for fresh numbers, but it still shows a load of 1.00 even after its been running for a day):
    top - 16:58:17 up 23 min,  1 user,  load average: 1.00, 0.58, 0.24
    Tasks: 235 total,   1 running, 234 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombie
    Cpu(s):  0.0%us,  0.0%sy,  0.0%ni, 98.8%id,  1.0%wa,  0.0%hi,  0.2%si,  0.0%st
    Mem:   4040336k total,   870384k used,  3169952k free,    13232k buffers
    Swap:  7812092k total,        0k used,  7812092k free,   225396k cached
The host OS is running Windows 2012 R2 and it too isint running anything else that would put a lot of load on the server.

    Hi Sir,
The following daemons must be installed manually for Ubuntu distributions:
VSS Snapshot daemon – This daemon is required to create live Linux virtual machine backups.
KVP daemon – This daemon allows setting and querying intrinsic and extrinsic key value pairs.
To install both daemons, please use the following command:
    Copy
    # sudo apt-get update
    # sudo apt-get install hv-kvp-daemon-init
    # uname –r
    <kernel release>
    # sudo apt-get install linux-tool-<kernel release>
    # sudo apt-get install linux-cloud-tools-<kernel release>

  • Unable to repair degraded Virtual disks in Storage Spaces under Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core

    Hi all,
I am finding myself in the following conundrum. I have a storage pool under Hyper-V Core, with 2 2TB Seagate drives.
One of the drives completely died (wouldn't spin up, tried it in a different box, still to no avail). I sent it in to Seagate for warranty replacement, got the new drive. Installed it and went through the notions of adding it to the pool and retiring the
one that was with "Lost Communication" status.
Tried to repair the virtual disks that are showing as "Unhealthy-Detached", quickly get 100% complete, but the repair didnt work.
The storage pool is in degraded state.
    Looks like metadata is corrupted.
Followed this post to upgrade Storage Spaces to latest version:
     https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/eead59e9-5e49-4bb6-8cbb-1dafddd9576b/unable-to-repair-degraded-virtual-disks-in-storage-spaces-2012r2?forum=winserverfiles
    Still, to no avail.
    Couple of questions:
    1) Is the data on the 3 virtual disks in state "Unhealthy: Detached" not recoverable?
    2) How can I get the storage pool back to "healthy"?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Network does not work, on Red Hat 5.6, 6.0 and 6.2 under Hyper-V 3 (Win2012R2)

I´ve tested 3 different linux versions ( Red Hat 5.6, 6.0 and 6.2 ) running under Hyper-V 3 (Win2012R2) and the behaviour is always the same, the network service starts up, the IP address is binded to the NIC, the NIC responds to PING requestes
    coming from localhost, but...
There´s no communication with any other host n the network. I have several windows machines working well, same vSwitch for all VMs, Generation1 machine, tested with Legacy adaptaer and "standard" net adapter as well.
I have to install ICs even using the Legacy NIC?
    RH7.0 works better?

For RHEL 6.3 and below, you need to install IC for network to work with "standard" NIC.
Can you use a newer version of RHEL 6? The IC are integrated in them.
RHEL 7 comes with IC integrated.

What you want to do is using "OGPIPE Open System Command" to create the pipe handles for stdin and stdout and optinally stderr. Then use "OGPIPE Write To Pipe" to write to stdin and "OGPIPE Read From Pipe" to read from stdout and optionally stderr. When finished close each opened pipe handle with "OGPIPE Close Pipe".

  • Application running slowly under Hyper-V (factor of 100 times slower)

I have an application running in a non virtual Windows Server 2008R2/SP1 environment.  It processes about 60,000 records from an indexed file (about 20MB in length) in about a second running in that environment.  I want to move the application
to a Hyper-V virtual server also running Windows Server 2008R2/SP1.  When I do so, the application runs, but processing the same file takes almost 2 minutes.
The application is the only thing running in the virtual machine and the virtual machine is the only VM running on the physical box.  The VM is configured with a single processor, 2048M of fixed (not dynamic) memory and a fixed size disk of 255GB.
There is no network traffic so the single network connection is not used.  The physical machine is a quad core with 8GB of memory and two 1TB drives that are less than 1/4 used in each case.
Now for the weird part.  The application runs from the command line.  If I start it and do nothing else, it takes about 2 minutes to complete its process.  But, if I start the application, switch focus to another window on the virtual
machine then switch back, the process completes immediately upon switching back to the command line window.
    Any thoughts?

The VM is configured with a single processor - The physical machine is a quad core
Do you mean the physical machine that was running the application has a quad core processor?  If not, what did the physical machine running the application actually have?  Is the application multithreaded so that it can make use of multiple processors?
Did the application in the physical world have OS and data on the same disk or on different disks?  Did you run this application shortly after you started the VM, or did you let the system quiesce a bit?  Did you measure performance on the physical
under the same sort of conditions?  Are you running from a cmd window or PowerShell?  (Your comment about clicking away and coming back brings to mind things I've seen with PowerShell)  Does it run quickly on a second instantiation, or does
    it run poorly every instantiation?
Determining performance requires a lot more information than what you provided.
I always assign at least two virtual CPUs to any Windows Server VMs.  There are enough system processes running on the box that two processors will almost always benefit the workload.  Also, it it not uncommon that the first run of an application
shortly after a machine has started will never perform as it will after a machine has settled in.  This is why every benchmark worth its salt will start the benchmark and let it run for a few minutes before they actually start measuring.

  • Trying to set-up the network adapter in Solaris 11 under Hyper-V fails

I was using Virtual Box to run Solaris 11 for testing purposes, however VB was disappointing as my VM hanged too often so now I am evaluating Hyper-V under Windows 8 Pro. If I can get the network to work I will use Hyper-V even if it lacks seamless mouse
and keyboard integration. So, I installed Solaris 11 in Hyper-V but I cannot get the network to work. What I have done:
    - I have created a Virtual Switch of type External with Virtual Switch Manager
    - I have created a Legacy Network Adapter for my virtual solaris machine
    - in Windows 8 I have created a Bridge for my WiFI NIC and the Virtual Switch
I can access the internet from my host machine (windows 8)but I cannot do it from the guest (solaris)
If I type "ipadm" in my solaris's terminal I can see that the NIC is listed but it has no IP address. So how can I assign an IP address to the Legacy Network Adapter?
    Thanks

    Hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply. I have managed to get networking working by creating a legacy card attached to a virtual switch, but I have not used the bridging anymore, instead I simply shared in the host OS the wifi connection to the virtual switch. This way it works.
Now I have another problem with the Solaris guest OS not seeing the SCSI controller, but I'll open a new thread for this after some more testing.
    Thank You

  • Best practices for installing Win 10 under Hyper-V on Server 2012R2 host

Yeah, yeah, I know I could probably get my answers after spending 10 hours reading hundreds of isolated threads here.  I've already put in about 2 hours, and I'm exhausted.  Plus, this site does not have a very sophisticated search function.
I want to install Win10 as a VM on my Server 2012R2 machine.  I am not currently hosting any other VMs, so my first decision was whether to try it using Hyper-V or VirtualBox.  I started with VirtualBox, but I ran into two problems: networking
and video.  Also, VirtualBox itself seems to have some issues with failing to install the extension pack.  So now I think I'll give Hyper-V a shot.
I found some blog posts from last year providing guidance on setting up Hyper-V for Win10, but given the rate of change of this beta OS, I expect there are many new "features" that can be mitigated against by specific settings on the VM.
    Some specific questions:
    1. Generation 1 or Generation 2 in the Hyper-V setup?  The blogs I've seen say to use Gen1, but provide no justification.  Perhaps because they are using Win8 as the host?  I am using 2012R2.
    2. Does the Win10 ISO file need to be continually available to the VM, or is it only used in the initial installation?
    3. How do I get the VM to access the GPU card, which has lots of memory, over the useless onboard video chip which only has 8MB and no 3D instruction set?  This was a dealbreaker with VirtualBox.
    4. I anticipate many issues with networking, but I'll start with this: I have dual onboard NICs going into a managed switch.  Should I just give one physical NIC to the VM and let the host have the other?  I think I'm going to have some issues
with DHCP IP address assignment, but we'll see.  Any best practices here would be helpful.
    Thanks.

    >1.
I'd use Gen 1, that is a BIOS type boot, but that's just because I've had
less trouble than with Gen2 VM's.
    >2.
Only during install, refresh, reset, or sfc.
    >3.
No virtualization solution does it easily, but there is RemoteFX if you can
get a Windows 10 client to use it.  I've never tried.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/16652.remotefx-vgpu-setup-and-configuration-guide-for-windows-server-2012.aspx
    >4.
That's what I would do (assigning one NIC to the VM, and one the host).  If
both are receiving an IP address right now from DHCP, they will continue to
do so the new way unless you have a managed switch that would prevent more
IP addresses.  It's hard to tell...

  • How to make dos window scrollable under win98?

Hi, I am using win98, every time when I run my GUI application, whenever I got bunch of error message that can not be displayed in one window, I will miss the original error information. Can anyone tell me how to make my dos window scrollable so that I can view all error message.
    Thanks a lot.

I don't think that you can do this. There is another way, however: When java throws an exception, if it is not caught in your program, it is sent to the standard error, which is the console. You can simply reset this to be a file, so you can read this to get all the error info. Try using the following code in your main method:
      public static void main(String[] arg) {
        try {

  • Virtualized firewall under Hyper-V?

We are currently considering installing an instance of pfSense on our Hyper-V R2 based server to act as a content filter, captive portal and general firewall.
Although it is usually bad practice to virtualise a firewall / gateway.. sometimes you gotta work with what you've got! :)
We've got 2 physical NICs.. 1 Facing the internet (WAN) and 1 facing our internal LAN.
How would one go about making sure all internet access goes through the pfSense VM?
Is there a configuration that eliminates any possibility of traffic coming in on the LAN NIC bypassing the pfSense VM?
    Sorry if it's a silly question, I'm a developer by day :D

Simply setting all PCs, switches, routers and etcetera network infrastructure to use the pfsense virtual machine as their default gateway will make all traffic flow through the content filter.
Certainly, someone could yank network cables out of the server and plug their PC straight into your WAN. You could set some kind of MAC filtering or 802.1x authentication to enact port level security. Of course, someone could just wire around that as well.
The point being: There comes a time when you are merely relying on "I've got the passwords and the keys to the server room and you don't."
Simply setting up your gateway as the default gateway / router and not having any other routing options on the network prevents all outlets with the exception of someone storming your server closet and frobbing with cables.
Also this as a bonus for my answer
    +----------------------------------+
    | +----------+ +---------+ | +----+ +----+ +----+
    | | pfSense | | Host OS | | | | | | | |
    | | | | | | | PC | | PC | | PC |
    | +----------+ +---------+ | | | | | | |
    | ^ ^ ^ | +----+ +----+ +----+
    | | +------+ | | ^ ^ ^
    | | | | | | | |
    | V V V | V V V
    +--------+ +---+ +-------+ +-------+ +---+ +-----------------+
    |Internet|<-->|WAN|<->|WAN NET| |LAN NET|<->|LAN|<----+| LAN SWITCH |
    +--------+ +---+ +-------+ +-------+ +---+ +-----------------+
    | Hyper-V Host |
    +----------------------------------+
t's actually possible to use the same NIC on the Hyper-V Host for both WAN and LAN, but you'll need to setup vLANs and need a switch that supports them. It gets messy quickly and NICs are fairly cheap. A note on NIC chips, get a good one, like Intel, Broadcom,
etc. Stay away from Realtek, Marvel, and most of the on-board chips on cheaper and DIY motherboards. They're nothing but trouble for virtualized environments.
Also, keep in mind that Hyper-V is a bare-metal Hypervisor. It is NOT a service that runs in Windows. What used to be the Windows installation on the machine becomes a special VM. This will not appear to be the case for simplicity and usability reasons, but
comes into play when you do things like setup the Hyper-V Networking.

  • How to Safely Remove Hardware under Hyper-V 2008 R2?

    Hi,
I'm using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, but it seems that there is broader experience/support with Server Core, so I'll try this question here.
There's no GUI, so how do I Safely Remove Hardware, e.g. a USB-attached external backup drive? I'm looking for a command-line tool to list removable drives, let me specify what to remove, and tell me when it's safe to remove it.
Also, how do I configure the drive properties (either safe removal or turn on write caching)?
    Thanks,

  • Accessing USB device in Windows 10 Tech Preview under Hyper-v

I am using Windows 10 Technical Preview in a VM created with Hyper-V on a Windows 8.1 machine, and accessing the VM with Remote Desktop Connection.  In RDC, I have set the local resources to include ports and "other PnP devices," but I still
cannot see my USB Microsoft LifeCam.  The camera works fine on the host, but in Windows 10 I get a message that says, "To get started, connect a camera."
What setting do I need to change in order to access this device in the VM?
    Thanks!
    MW

    Hi,
Since USB drive could be work properly, VM and RDP settings should be ok. For this problem, it is probably a driver compatibility problem, it would be better to contact LifeCam support to confirm the problem:

  • Enhancing the DOS Experience Under Win 7

Let’s be honest, more than a few of us still have a DOS application we like to run once in a while. Concern about losing access to these old family favorites may be keeping some of us from upgrading out of XP long after we would otherwise have done so. If you’ve tried running a DOS application under the Win 7 beta or Vista, you are already aware of the problems. The new operating systems will run DOS applications, but not very enthusiastically.
For one thing, shortcuts created for running DOS-based programs under Win 7 or Vista will display only an unattractive blank vanilla icon on the desktop. For another, all you get to run your DOS application in is a cramped little window almost too small to be usable.
Here’s a way to improve on both of these situations and enhance your DOS experience under Win 7 or Vista. It is adapted from a posting by Edward Mendelson on a Word Perfect-DOS site a year or so ago.
First, be sure you have copied all the files you need for your DOS program to a folder you can locate again when prompted. Now right-click on the desktop. Select New from the menu, then Shortcut, and then enter cmd.exe when asked for the location of the item. Click on Next, and type the name you want to use in the shortcut. For example, if the program you want to use is Professional File, as it is in my case, type in Pro File and then click Finish. Next, right-click on the resulting generic shortcut and choose Properties. Select the Shortcut tab and note what is now displayed in the Target field.
Do not alter what you see there, but move the cursor to the right of cmd.exe, type a space, then add this text:
/c c:\(folder location)\(executable file name). In my computer this would be /c c:\PF\PF.exe. Notice that the text to add begins with a forward slash, then the letter "c", then a space, then the folder location.
Now you are ready to select your icon. Click on Change Icon button and type moricons.dll in the space under "look for icons…" at the top. Click OK and select the icon you want from the choices offered. Click OK again, and your new shortcut, complete with a new icon, will be displayed on the desktop.
The next step is to help resolve the problem of the cramped window you get to work with for your DOS application. You can’t actually increase the number of lines allocated to the DOS window, but you can make it bigger by choosing a larger font size. Right-click on your new shortcut and then the Font tab. Now select the Lucia Console font size you want. I find 20 about right, but you can pick a larger size if you prefer. The working window will enlarge in response to the font size change. Click OK, and you will finally have both a shortcut icon of your choice for your DOS application, and a window large enough to actually use.

A very good idea: To write the name of a program to be executed by CMD as parameter!
For example, I’m using a batch file INI.BAT containing the command PATH C:\UXD;%PATH% and a menu display.
The directory C:\UXD is my User eXecution Directory containing all the old program files to be executed in the CMD environment. By adding
this directory to the system PATH variable, it is accessible as long as the CMD environment is active.
One more hint optimizing the CMD window: By right click on the CMD icon, you can open the properties (in German *Eigenschaften”)
window. You click on the register card “Layout” and can now enlarge the CMD window according to your monitor space.
A very good idea is to click on the options register card and specify more buffer space. I’m using 8
buffers with 200 lines allowing to scroll the CMD window. After typing HELP CMD for example, I can study easily the long help text of more than 100 lines.

  • Two VMs inside Hyper-V Under 2012 Essentials R2? Need 2003 To Run as Well for CRM and SQL Server

We are a small office (8 users) with a new server on the way.  We are running Server 2003 and CRM 4.0 and will upgrade to Server 2012 Essentials R2.  I would like to run this as a VM and integrate Azure's cloud backup.  The problem --and I'd
like to be wrong about this -- is there is no included SQL server with Essentials 2012.  Our old server has SQL server 2005 which I believe was included.  Our database is only 1.6GB so we could use the free version of SQL Server 2014, but it is limited
to one CPU.  Our new server is dual CPU, 8 total cores.  My thought is to use P2V and make a virtual machine from my current 2003 server, then run that inside the Hyper-V environment along with 2012 Essentials.
So I have two questions?  Does the Essentials (or Hyper-V) licensing permit me to run any more VMs than the single instance of 2012 Essentials?  And secondly, will the primary 2012 Essentials installation acting as the Hyper-V administrator be
able to use Azure to back up both virtual machines?
If I am acting on any incorrect assumptions please correct me.

I suggest that you follow your own suggestion on what to believe from posts.  Read the EULA on Essentials on your own.  And talk to a trained Microsoft licensing specialist.  Some of your assumptions are not valid.
"I have purchased Server Essentials 2012 R2, which allows for one instance to implement the hypervisor and one instance of a virtual machine."
From the data sheet describing Server Essentials is this statement - "
With Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, the product licensing terms have been expanded to enable you to run one operating system instance on the physical server in order to run Hyper-V, plus a second instance on that server in order to run Essentials as
    a virtual machine.
Therefore, the only VM you can legally run under Essentials is another copy of Essentials.
"Furthermore it would be foolish for Microsoft to deny me additional virtual machines under that scenario since I can install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 for free and use Essentials to manage it."
FALSE.  Actually, virtualization rights are part of the Server operating system license.  Since the license is written by Microsoft, they can include whatever limits they deem appropriate.  In fact, when looking at Standard and Datacenter
Editions of Windows Server, the ONLY difference between the two are the virtualization rights included with the operating system.  Your assumption that you can run it for 'free' under Hyper-V Server is incorrect.  True, Hyper-V server is
a no-cost download from Microsoft, but it does not include any operating system licenses.  Those must be purchased separately.  Licenses are assigned to physical machines, not to virtual machines.  So it would be possible to use your 2003 license
on a Hyper-V Server instance, but only if it is a non-OEM license.  OEM licenses are non-transferrable from the hardware with which they were sold.
"It would also be foolish because I could virtualize everything under VMWare's ESXi --for free--"
FALSE.  Same reason as given above.
Lastly, be forewarned about P2V of a Windows Server 2003 machine.  If you spend any time reading this forum, you will find lots of horror stories about people having less than successful attempts at P2V'ing WS2003.  The recommendation is to build
a 2003 VM from scratch to avoid the many pitfalls, assuming you do not have an OEM license.  Of course, even then you are still putting a business critical system on an operating system that is dropping support come July of next year, followed shortly
thereafter by no support on SQL 2005.  Bottom line is that you would most likely be better served by trying to upgrade your application to a version that runs on the current release of Windows Server.

  • Acrobat 9 - hyper link issue and print in larger font

I am using Acrobat 9 and have two issues :
When I try to convert a web page to pdf file i.e. through the print command in FF, the text links are there in the new file but without the underlying hyper links ?
How can I print the files with a larger font. It is okay for seeing it on monitor but too small for me when I print.
    thanks.

Do as AbhigyanModi suggests or use the Adobe Acrobat plugin that should be in your web browser if you're using Internet Explorer. This happened because you "printed" to convet to PDF. You have to use either AbhigyanModi method or use the Internet Explorer plugin to save active hyperlinks.
In terms of the font size -- You can set up the web capture preferences first. Explore the menu that AbhigyanModi suggests or use the built in help. It's there for a reason.
