MS Natural Multimedia Keyboard & iTunes

When using MS Natural Multimedia Keyboard & Media Player, the Play/Stop button works okay. However, when using this button with iTunes, this happens:
iTunes is playing and is minimized. I press the Play/Stop button. ITunes stops (as it should), but also maximizes.
When I press the Play/Stop button again, iTunes plays for about 1 second, and then stops.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem?
I use XP Home.

Most likly you will have to goto Microsoft and download a update to the keyboard software to fix this issue.

  • ITunes Not Working with Multimedia Keyboard... help?

I recently installed a new keyboard and mouse software, where the keyboard is a multimedia keyboard. Since that, I've been unable to get any SOUND from anything playing in iTunes, whereas the sound for my computer and any other audio/video programs works fine.
I've tried fooling around with the multimedia buttons on the keyboard, but nothing helps this..
Can someone help me? I want to get back to using my iTunes!

Anyone know anything? If it's any help, I'm using the 20GB iPod that I bought under a year ago.

  • Multimedia keyboard controls

Was using iTunes 7.2 for a while with no issues. The multimedia keyboard buttons (play, pause, skip forward, skip backwards) worked whenever another window was active. I upgraded to 7.5, and that is no longer the case. The only time those buttons work is when iTunes is the active window, which is useless, b/c then i normally just use my mouse. Oddly, i use the keyboard functions enough to where this is REALLY getting on my nerves. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

on a side note, i don't think apple's website should flag iTunes as being a typo.

i have the same issue. i run itunes in the background while gaming so i can't really tab out to switch stuff easily. i went to update my drivers but the button was greyed out which leads me to believe that it doesn't need updating. any other thoughts on this one? computer's new since the last version of itunes came out.

  • Logitech Multimedia Keyboard (key not working)

I got a new Logitech Multimedia Keyboard and using xbindkeys I got almost all the keys mapped.
There is one key, however, (the Messenger key) that does not seem to be recognized at all.
It does not show when I use "xbindkeys -k", nor when I use "xev" and there is no "action" whatsoever when I press this key. Yet, being the key there I should be able to map it.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how could I find out and/or map this key?
In all honesty, it is not just about the key ...  I can just as well use key-combinations and get Gaim going, but I want to know why it is "invisible". I other words, I want to understand the problem.
    Thanks in advance.
    R

Copied from gentoo-wiki (and edited for Arch):
If pressing a key doesn't do anything at all (ie, xev produeces no output), run the following command in an X terminal:
    dmesg
You will probably see some lines like these:
    Code: Output of dmesg
atkbd.c: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x96 on isa0060/serio0).
atkbd.c: Use 'setkeycodes e016 <keycode>' to make it known.
This means that the kernel doesn't have keycodes mapped to your keyboard's scancodes. You will have to add one line in /etc/rc.local for each missing key as follows:
    File: /etc/rc.local
    setkeycodes e008 136
    setkeycodes e016 150
    ... And so on ...
Where the first number (e008) is what you see in dmesg, and the second number (136) is an unused keycode in your kernel. In general you can find a good keycode by taking the last 2 digits of this first number, converting it from hex (base-16) to decimal (base-10) and adding 128.
This will set up the proper scancode - keycode mapping every boot. To set them up without rebooting, run the following as root:
    sh /etc/rc.local
After you have the proper mappings setup, restart X and try running xev again, to ensure that a keycode is displayed for each multimedia key you want to use.

  • How to add Multimedia Keyboard Shortcuts

    Brand new to mac/apple...
I use a wireless keyboard and mouse and want to use the multimedia keys on this keyboard. How do i add keyboard shortcuts in 10.5.5?

Is there a way to verify the OS sees the "extra" keys on the keyboard (the mouse also has some extra buttons that i would like to assign but i want the keyboard first)?
Go to the system preference mentioned in my earlier post & follow the instructions it provides to try to assign an application-specific shortcut to one of the "extra" keys (which will require one of modifier keys to be pressed along with it). If it recognizes the key, you will see some symbol for it in the second box, along with one for the modifier key. (The modifier keys are the shift, option, etc. keys that don't do anything by themselves).
You might also check Logictech's website for software that supports the keyboard with OS X.

  • In Win 7 on Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000's quick-launch keys, Firefox & Thunderbird launch only in Taskbar, without opening program, then unfocused

Although these quick-launch keys on this keyboard worked fine on this computer when running Windows XP, when I switched to Windows 7 64-bit they started to have this problem, but only with Firefox & Thunderbird. And if I program these keys to open other programs, they don't have the problem. So it's some compatibility thing between Firefox/Thunderbird, Win7 64-bit, and this keyboard's software (latest version).
When I press one of the quick-launch keys on this keyboard programmed for Firefox/Thunderbird, they display a program rectangle in the Taskbar only, but no program opens on the screen. When I hover the mouse over this rectangle on the Taskbar, the program immediately opens, but out of focus.
I've also tried resetting Firefox, but that doesn't change the behavior at all.

The window that is focused is whatever the previous one opened was. If Firefox or Thunderbird are launched with no other windows open, nothing is focused.
After working with Microsoft's tech support on this problem over the phone, and replacing the keyboard driver & software with the one called Microsoft Mouse & Keyboard (both this and the one I had used are shown as the current drivers on Microsoft's 4000 Keyboard download page), nothing changed. Then I worked on the computer for a while, and the problem suddenly went away.
The only remaining problem is that Thunderbird doesn't search for mail right away when I open it. This is true regardless of how I open it (from the keyboard quick launch key, from the start menu, from a shortcut, etc.). Perhaps this is a totally different problem.
    Thanks for your help.

try the 2.6.20 patch there, it *may* apply to 2.6.21. I'll give it a try now.
    http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Microsoft_ … board_4000
there's a how-to there, though it's slightly out dated, and some of it didnt work to me. importantly though, it mentions Li Yu's patches, which also add support for the extra keys. He sends updated patches to lkml frequently, and there's one there that should work on 2.6.21. you can find them here: http://search.gmane.org/?query=&author= … Ali+yu---A

  • Mini and MS Natural ps2 keyboard question.

    Hi.
I ordered my Mac Mini today, as there was no Intel version of it shipping (a tad disapointing really), anyhow... I have to have one because I hate the noise my gaming pc has when I do basic stuff as surfing the net and so on...
As my keyboard is a PS2 MS Nautral Keyboard, will the mac mini recoqnize my keyboard if i add a ps2 to usb converter to it?
    Thx,

    Martian Marvin Other OS Lightsaber

Judging by comments posted here recently, people seem to have little success with PS2/USB adapters - when I tried one (on a PC as well as a Mac) the keyboard wasn't detected.
As a consequence, I'd have little confidence it will work correctly. It might.... but then it might not!

Have you contacted MicroSoft about this? I presume that there are many PC keyboards that are not supported completely under Leopard.

  • UK PC Keyboard Key Mapping problem

I've tried two UK PC Keyboards on my new mini. Both work fine apart from a few keys which are mapped incorrectly.
The most annoying are that the @ (at sign) and " (double quotes) are the wrong way round.
Is there a setting I can change (or some software I can install) to re-map these keys? I've tried changing the keyboard type in system preferences but it has no effect.
Everything else on the device is superb!
    Thanks

Incredibly, i found the easiest solution to this problem (no, not the solution of buying a Mac keyboard!) lay on Microsoft's website...
I was using a Microsoft Natural Multimedia keyboard with my mini. I went there out of interest to see if there were drivers for it that would allow the use of some of the media keys (and there were incidentally, but that is off-topic!).
I went to http://www.microsoft.com/mac and followed a link to hardware. I forget exactly what route i followed, but i besically tracked down the mac drivers for the natural multimedia keyboard. In addition to the drivers download there was a microsoft keyboard layout download as well. I suspect this layout would be available as a download whichever keyboard you picked.
After installing this layout i then had an extra option in the international settings box called "British - Microsoft". Bingo! Job done.
Now i still found it frustrating since everything you read and all the software you have still talks about keys that the MS keyboards simply don't have and you have to remember that the "command" key is the "windows" key, etc., etc. In the end i just gave in and bought one of the apple pro keyboards. It gave me two extra usb ports and is LOVELY to use.
Bit of a learning curve mind since the @'s and "'s are in the "wrong" places if you come from the MS world, but i figured i may as well go through the entire learning curve and take that on board as well

  • Is a mechanical keyboard a good idea?

Currently i am using a Microsoft Natural Multimedia keyboard 1.0a that i got back in 2003/2004 some of the keys are starting to have problems and i'm thinking of spending ~$100 to get a mechanical keyboard. I obviously use the space-bar a lot as an editor as well as WASD for video games and i'm wondering if anyone has any experiences with a mechanical keyboard as well as what key type would your recommend red/blue/brown etc.
The keyboards i am looking at:
Das Keyboard Model S Professional (blue keys) $115
Zowie Celeritas Gaming Keyboard (brown keys) $101
    More information on mechanical keyboards

    Eric,
I have three of these Filco's with Cherry Brown switches: http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-2-Tenkeyless-FKBN87M-EB2/dp/B004WOF7QM/ref=sr_1_1?s =electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1345516017&sr=1-1 .   If you want speed and feel, with reasonable quietness the Brown switches are great.  The Blue switches are supposed to have a bit more feel, but they are a bit louder.
I used Microsoft Natural keyboards for years.  They would last a year or two, but they would then be so mushy and sticky that they were useless.   I would never go back to the old cheesy keyboards.   They are junk, regardless of brand. (In my ever-so-modest opinion, of course!  )
If you mostly type text consider an 87 key version like mine and then use a 10 Key pad for those times you need to enter a lot of numbers and/or for gaming: http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-TenKeyPad-Tactile-Numberpad/dp/B000MGBPNI/ref=sr_1_ 19?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1345516017&sr=1-19  You would be amazed how much less keyboard to mouse movement you'll need with an 87 key keyboard versus the standard 105 key keyboard.   With a Filco, you have the choice.   I don't think many other brands offer 87 key keyboards.
I have one of the 10 Key pads that I thought I would use.  I'm not a gamer and do very little data entry, but I type at least ten hours per day (I'm a software develper).   It only took me a few hours of use to get used to typing using the number keys at the top of the keyboard.   So I've only used it about twice.
Consider getting a keyboard rest: http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Leather-Wristrest-Compact-Keyboards/dp/B001EY9RJQ/ref=sr_1_12? s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1345516017&sr=1-12 They come in 105 key and 87 key sizes.
    Regards,
    Dan.
p.s. The only downside of mechanical keyboards is that they are not water resistant.  You have to keep them dry.  To me that's a minor issue.
