MS Office Mac wreaks havoc with arabic fonts on OSX

i always have this problem when installing the dreaded MS Office for Mac on any OSX system and that is that Arabic fonts that work fine start going haywire because MS Office Mac installs some funky corrupt fonts.
Does anyone know how to go back to the original pre-office installed fonts that came with OSX snow leopard? im guessing i have to use the install discs or something.
i've tried to selectively figure out what Office has installed and remove them and its a pain.
on a related note, will Office do fine if I dont allow it to install its own fonts on my system?

tom -
i am not sure of the specifics but here's some info from a poster on a board:
"2) There is an entirely separate issue about viewing Arabic in Safari. Installing MS Office for Mac also installs Office fonts on your Mac. Two of those fonts (specifically Arial and Times New Roman) will corrupt Safari's ability to display Arabic properly and you will wind up with disjointed Arabic text like ? ? ? instead of ???
To fix this all you need to do is delete the offending fonts from your Mac (go to Library>Preferences>Fonts and simply trash Arial and Times New Roman. Your mac will then revert to using the original versions of those fonts that came with your system -- in other words, you'll still have access to the Arial font in Microsoft Word and other Office apps, but Safari will display Arabic correctly."
http://www.emiratesmac.com/forums/arabic/604-writing-displaying-arabic-my-mac-3. html
and there's some useful information here as well http://www.smi.uib.no/ksv/ArabicMac.html .
are there any other font folders that i should time-machine restore besides the two aptly named ones i mentioned in /Library and /user/Library ?
and on a related note, there was an option in the custom settings of the MS Mac Office installation to install 'fonts' (or was it 'additional fonts' ?) that, in hindsight, maybe i should have unchecked. if i ever have to reinstall office one day i will pay more attention to this as well as have my fonts backed up for sure.

Funnily, it doesn't seem to happen here, but it does when entering text in a web interface (using Firefox, font Bayan) and when using Text Edit.
Seems to be a problem of a specific font, as e.g. Arial MS Unicode works fine. Any hints?
    Thank you!

You can't do Arabic on MS Word for Mac.  This app has never supported RTL scripts, so you need to use something else.  Mellel is best, but Pages 5, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, Open/LibreOffice should work OK.
You switch between languages by using the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen or by using the keyboard shortcuts apple/command plus space.  Go to system prefs/keyboard/shortcuts to make sure that is activated.
To see which key does what, you use Keyboard  Viewer.

You place vowels on letters by typing the key for the vowel after the key for the letter.  The vowels are on the option/alt keys, option/alt + a gives you َ

  • TLF in Flash CS4 showing ??? with Arabic fonts

I got TLF to function on my work computer (XP-32) with no trouble.
However, at home (XP-64), when I type in the TLF box in CS4, I only get ????? showing. If I copy and paste Arabic from Notepad into the text box, the arabic text shows up with no problem. I've tried using Adobe Arabic, Transparent Arabic, and Standard Arabic font with the same results.
I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I first installed the TLF component, it set it up in my Flash CS3 extension manager. After deleting it from there, I installed it again to the CS4 extension manager.
Has anyone else had this situation? I can't figure out why my work computer and home computer are behaving differently.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi azeem
I have been learning how to deal with arabic fonts now in flash10 and from what i have read up so far adobe has stopped updating the TLF component and it is been said it will only reappear with flash11 again. So if there is a bug with 64 bit os , then it is stuck like that for now. Another point to mention while using the forums and from personal testing is that the adobe arabic font will not handle diacritics correctly. You should try use Arial version 4 (the arial that ships with vista , the arial that shipped with xp is also faulty).

  • How can i buy mac book air with Arabic keyboard

how can i buy mac book air with Arabic keyboard

Nobody here represents Apple or any store.  To find out whether you can buy something, you need to contact a store directly yourself.  Since you didn't say where you live, it's hard to even suggest a store.  Of course you can buy what you want from stores that sell to Arabic speaking countries, like
    http://store.apple.com/ae/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_air
If you are in the US, you can try asking an Apple retail store if they can make a special order for one for you.

  • PDFs with Arabic fonts

I got problems with PDFs with Arabic fonts?
    Is it  a frequent??

What specific problems are you having? In the general case, we know that Hebrew, Arabic, and other non-Latin fonts do properly display with the Adobe Reader assuming of course that the fonts are properly embedded in the PDF files.

if you are coming to Dubai for a stopover. Then you might want to consider buying this from iStyle (Apple Premium Authorized reseller). because you just can pay and yake it right away. unlike online store where you want to wait like 5-8 days for delivery.

Why is Firefox intruding and sending updates when auto updates are turned off? This constant updating wreaks havoc with add-ons
Why is Firefox violating my computer?

I left "automatic updates" for Firefox UNCHECKED and left download when updates are found UNCHECKED. " Ask me wha I want to do" is CHECKED.
In English, that means don't automatically update and if updates are found ASK.
It does NOT mean ignore all the instructions and download!

  • Office Mac 2008 compatible with Windows 7 through Bootcamp?

Hi, this is my first post to this forum and am seeking some assistance.
I have always been a PC user and switched to a mac around 8 mths ago and loving it, although I am still trying to drive the thing
For study I have just installed Windows 7 through bootcamp for some CAD programs and have the following question. Can I run my Office Mac 08 through Windows or do I need to purchase again under the windows platform?
When I purchased my mac I bought office mac at the same time for excel etc, but I don't want to pay again just to run on Windows? This may be a simple question to some, but I don't know much about programs.
    Thanks, Evan

No. You may want to run Windows in emulation.

  • Need Help with Arabic Font from Microsoft word to Adobe Illustrator

hello after i spoke with a adobe professional at the mac store, I was told that in my Mac computer in systems preferences, click on international and then click tab on Input Menu and select the arabic input source. Once I did that i thought it would work but then realize i saw another issue.
It look totally different. Please any suggestions?
    thanks

Without a different version of AI (AIME from Winsoft) your are not going to be able to handle a Right to Left language such as Arabic in regular AI. Your best bet is to make a PDF from Word and place it as an image in AI.

  • Kerning different between mac and pc with ttf fonts?

    Hello!
When I take a file from my PC to my company's mac the ttf font kerning is fine, but when I go from mac to pc the kernning gets all messed up. is there anything that I can do to fix this? Or do I need to buy a mac to be sure I get accurate fonts across my and my company's computers?
    Thanks!

Kerning information is part of each font, whether TrueType, PostScript Type 1, or OpenType. If you have the exactly same font on both platforms (in their respective versions, if necessary), going back and forth should be a straightforward process. (The only exception concerns ligatures with TT and PS fonts, but, even there, the kerning should be unaffected.)
Are you sure you are not seeing just some screen display anomaly? Have you compared actual printed output?
Are you using a professional-grade font? Many cheap or free fonts are deficient in areas, such as kerning. You might think you have the same font on both platforms, but the "cheap" font on your Windows machine might, in fact, not be the exact equivalent of an identically named font on your company's Mac.

    Hi
I have office 2011 loaded on my Macbook Pro.  When I save my xcel docs and then try to reopen, I get a message to say that the doc has been locked (by me) and is read only.  If I agree to the read only, the doc opens and then another mess comes up saying that the document HD:Users:etc.xlsx is available do I want to edit.  If I choose the yes option, I then am asked to save under a different name.  Why does this keep happening.  I am new to Mac. Tks yr help

You may need to rebuild permissions on your user account. To do this, boot to your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys while booting) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In Terminal, type:  'resetpassword' (without the 's) and select the admin user. You are not going to reset your password. Click on the icon for your Macs hard drive at the top. From the drop down below it select the user account which is having issues. At the bottom of the window, you'll see an area labeled Restore Home Directory Permissions and ACLs. Click the reset button there. The process takes a few minutes. When complete, restart.

  • "Phantom" accounts on second drive wreaking havoc with the main drive!

I recently bought a new hard drive for my 2006 MacPro, intending to use it as a new startup disk.
Trouble is, the drive it replaced, a 2TB drive has too much info I want to keep to move it out and reformat.  So I figured if I deleted all of the old system files I'd be ok.
Since then I've been plagued with problems, mostly permissions changing in the core services folders.  There are other minor issues as well, like my apple keyboard function keys not doing what they're supposed to, and if I accidentally hit the eject button in the menu bar I get the beachball of death, with no way to force quit.
I have done everything I could, and a lot of research, and I stumbled upon the answer.  In the startup disk utility "Reset password' I noted that the admin account, and user account from the old drive were still being recognized as existing.  So basically it's like my computer is having an identity crisis!
I've been searching for a way to get rid of those phantom accounts, and my best lead turned up some apparent glitch in Leopard regarding old accounts.  But how to get rid of them?
It would be very difficult for me to safely backup the sheer amount of data on that drive in order to reformat, but I can't seem to find how to rid myself of these accounts.  I tried logging in as the root user, but didn't see any tell-tale files on that drive.
It's driving me nuts!  I even started studying UNIX in hopes of being able to find a solution in Terminal.
    Any suggests?

Actually I had no intention or desire to move the account to the new drive.  Two of my drives were on the verge of utterly failing, and I wanted to do an entirely clean installation on the new drive, in case anything on the failing drives could have been corrupted in any way.
Ironically, it's not the original accounts that concern me.  I had three drives and in desperation quickly installed osx on the third (2TB) drive (The only reliable one) in the hopes of saving anything from the two drives that were going belly up.  At the time we really couldn't afford a new drive and I was hoping I could at least save the data by doing this drastic step.
When it didn't work I bought a new drive, remove the two failing ones leaving me with the new clean drive and the 2TB with the emergency backup install.  It's the accounts created by THAT installation that concerns me :/

  • JPEGS wreaking havoc with Leopard users

I have had serious problems in sending an email with a JPEG attachment to recipients who are running the Leopard OS. The email will basically make the recipient's Apple mail program, and sometimes the whole operating system, choke. One recipient had such a bad time he had to reinstall his entire OS in order to get up and running again. NOTE: The JPEG in question is a small file (176k), and had no problems being received by people running Apple OS 10.4 or earlier, nor any problems for those with PC/Windows platform.
As a workaround, I tried sending the image embedded as part of an HTML formatted email, but Leopard users (and again ONLY Leopard users -- all other recipients had no problems) received the properly formatted text, but the image (from the same original jpeg previously sent as an attachment) did not display. Ironically and interestingly, when Leopard users clicked on a link from the HTML formatted email, when viewing that URL in Safari they could STILL not see the same image on the web, viewing instead an empty box where the image should have been. When they went to the same URL in Firefox, the image displayed correctly. For anyone interested, the web page that will not display correctly for those using the Safari/Leopard combination is here:
    http://www.lernerphoto.com/content.html?page=5
Clearly there is some kind of problem with the JPEG and the Leopard OS/Apple Safari. No one else has any kind of trouble like this. Anyone have any idea what the bug is, and when/how it might be fixed?
    Many thanks for any feedback.

Yes, it is a new twist on the problem discussed for several pages here:

I used Firefox to grab your jpeg, the used HexEdit to open it. Sure enough, at the top was the exif information, including this:
Shahla and one of her daughters stand in their courtyard to remove their shoes before entering their mud-walled house. Many Kandahari women rarely leave home and live most of their lives within the confines of their compound walls. (Photo by © Paula Lerner)
--I had to remove some unrecognized characters to get the above to display correctly here
Once I deleted the exif data in HexEdit and resaved the file it opened fine in Safari and Preview.
