MS Project 2010 Opens Blank

I have a 2010 Project Pro file I've been working on, in the same location on my hard drive, and all was fine with it on Friday. When I try opening it now it just opens a blank file with no content. It also doesn't display the file name at the top and instead
shows "project1". Searching the internet I've seen other people with similar issues, one resource said to go to view and select 'arrange all' and their data then showed, didn't work for me. I've tried different views, there's no data anywhere in the file that
opens and there's no error message displayed when I try to open my file. I've tried making a copy and renaming it, doesn't help. I've opened other project schedules with no issues, just not my most current file. Is there anything I can do to restore my last
saved file? I did retrieve a backup version however that still has lost a days worth of work.
Thanks in advance if you have any suggestions to help.

It just occurred to me that one of those macros might be an AutoRun macro that would run and then close the file automatically after you attempted to open it.  Try this to see if you can possibly open the most recent copy of the file that refuses
to open:
1.  Click File > Open.
2.  In the Open dialog, navigate to the folder where you have the project that will not open.
3.  Press and hold the SHIFT key on your computer keyboard.
4.  Select the file in question and click the Open button (remember to keep pressing the SHIFT key until the file actually opens).
If you are able to successfully open the project, you can click File > Organizer > Modules and delete the offending macros.  If this does not help, then at least we tried one more avenue that doesn??t work!  :)
Let us know if this helps.

  • Can't open Project 2010 file in Project 2007

I am trying to open a Project 2010 file in Project 2007, I get an error that asks if I would like to download the converter and I say yes and get a generic product page for Project 2010. I can't locate the file that I need, how do I find it?

    Addressed here:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/opening-project-mpp-files-from-different-versions-HA001045020.aspx
You have reached this page because the Project MPP file that you are trying to open was created in a later version of Microsoft Project. Check below to determine if a converter for opening later files is available to you.
Which Project version are you using?
Which file version are you trying to open?

No converter is available. If you received a Project 2010 file that you want to open using Project 2007, ask the person who sent the file to first save it to the Project 2007 file format.
Alternately, you can install the free
trial version of Project 2010, and then view the file, or save it to the Project 2007 file.
Note Once the trial version of Project 2010 has expired, it can continue to open and view project files, but it won’t be able to save them.

    There are two possibilities here.
If you are using Project 2003 with SP3, project files from Project 2007 can be opened read-only.
Download Microsoft Office Project 2003 Service Pack 3.
If you are using Project 2003 without SP3, there is no converter available. Upgrade to Project 2003 with SP3, or ask the person who sent the Project 2007 or later file to save the file first in the Project 2000-2003 file format.

  • Error opening Project 2007 file after using project 2010

This is the second time I'm experiencing this problem.
Created a file (say Rev 1) in Project 2007 at work and took it home and updated it using Project 2010. When I finished updating using Project 2010, I saved the file in Project 2007 format. Came to work the next day, opened the file using
Project 2007 and did a "Save As" so that I have another revision of the file (Rev 2).
After updating Rev 2 in Project 2007 I closed it but when I came to work the next day I couldn't open Rev 2 file again either in Project 2007 or 2010. This has happened to me with 2 different files.
The error message I get is
An unexpected error occured during command execution.
    Try the following:

It seems to me that it has to do something with invalid characters in the file name of the timeline. Or it could be anything from an '&' to two concurrent spaces, mulitple '.' or even a dash (-). Stick with single spaces, letter and

  • Cannot Open Project 2010 file in Project 2013

I have a 2010 Project file that will not open in Project 2013. It seems to be something dealing with predecessors and successors. Project 2013 stop responding when I try to open the file, and when I try to copy the information from Project 2010 and paste
in 2013 it give me an error on every predecessors and successors and does not copy the predecessors and successors. The error is "A pasting error occurred on ID nn in the predecessors or successors column. The information is not valid". then it remove
the predecessors or successors, however, the information in the predecessors and successors are valid line numbers in the file, they work fine in Project 2010.
    Has anyone came across this?

There is a possibility that this file has somehow gotten corrupted.  You might try the following:
Open the troublesome project in Project 2010.
Click File > Save As and save it as an XML file.
    Close the file.
Open the XML file and use the Import Wizard to create a new project.
Save the new MPP file over the old one.
Now try opening the MPP file from 2010 in Microsoft Project 2013.

  • There was a problem sending the command to the program when opening Microsoft Project 2010 files

When opening MS Project 2010 files from the file and print server, I receive "There was a problem sending the command to the program."  Copy the same file to my local drive and the file opens fine.  This can be repeated by several other
users.  Created a simple project file and once the size hit 1 MB, the error appeared.  The error appears on all files over 1 MB.
I am a domain admin, so it is not a rights issue.  This does not seem to be a network latency issue, the file copies extremely fast.
    Any ideas?

This message appears to be caused by Windows Explorer trying to send old-fashioned DDE messages to the Application.
Since MS Project has no "Ignore DDE messages" setting you might want to go change the compatibility settings for WinProj.EXE (and any shortcut to it) to Windows 7 or greater.  Hopefully then Windows Explorer will stop trying to send DDE messages.
Another possible culprit is older versions of the WinZip explorer extensions - I would disable them as well.
    Good luck,

  • Cannot open project file in Project 2010

    Hi,
I have a project created in Project 2010. I can save it without any problems. But some saves are broken and I cannot open them again. When I open saved project an error message is displayed:
There was a problem sending the command to the program and Project freezes. Project 2010 itself starts without any problems. What's strange I can open this file in viewers like MOOS Project Viewer 2.0 but not in Project.
    Any tips highly
    appreciated.
    Lukasz Chomin

    Hi Lukasz,
Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :-)
It sound as though that project has corruption.  If you can open it at all, follow the advice given below.  If you can’t open it at all, it seems like it’s lost – you do have a backup don’t you?
If you can open it in another program, try copy/paste the data back into a new project.
If you suspect a corrupt file, you could try the suggestions in FAQ Item: 43. Handling project file corruption and/or bloat.
FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at this web address:

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :-)

  • Error saving Project 2010 files to network drive - doesn't see network drive

    ANSWERED (11 April 2014):
So it seems the resolution to this is to simply create a new share with a different name. I used the existing folder (to retain NTFS permissions) and just select to Add a new Share (applying the same Share permissions as the non working Shares).
Deploying this new Share via Group Policy as a test resulted in staff being able to open files from Windows Search, save files through MS Project and the Share being accessible through browsing SMB.
All problems resolved by using a new share name for the existing folder. Seems to be a corruption in the namespace.
Note: I had previously deleted the share and recreated it. I had removed all NTFS permissions and readded (through both the GUI and icacls). This didn't make a difference.
Only changing the name of the share fixed the problem.
    Original Question
    Already
posted here... but Microsoft Support has not responded.
It seems some staff on some computers are having problems saving MS Project files to the network. This is only since an upgrade to SBS2011 (from SBS2003). The only difference now, is that network drives are mapped via group policy rather than a  'net
    use' script.
This is affecting users on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, with either MS Project 2007 or 2010. The users have full change access to the folders and can create new files and modifying existing files, just not a MS Project file. Other file tyes, e.g
Word .docx, Excel .xlsx, Adobe .pdf files, all work fine. These files can be opened, edited and saved normally without problem.
    To replicate this:
The user opens an existing file or creates a new file on the network folder (either through Windows Explorer or MS Project). They then click File > Save in MS Project and receive the following error (see pic below):
An interesting symptom of this is that if you select File > Save As in MS Project, the Sae As dialog box doesn't remeber the path location of the network drive. MS Project instead prompts to save the file in the local users documents folder (see pic below):
If they browse back to the original folder where the file was saved and choose to save it there, they are of course, prompted to overwrite the existing file and they can save the file. But the same thing happens every time they open the file.
It seems the problem is that Project isn't seeing the path of the file or that the network drive is attached.
If a user closes the file without saving it, they are prompted to save the file and the prompt shows the drive path:
Do you want to save changes to "N:\... Projects\Active Projects\CC...\F4 Project Plan File\004 Programme\test project file.mpp"?
But choosing to save the file gives them the same result as Save As, they are prompted for a new location as if the original file location doesn't exist.
I have disconnected the mapped drive and connected it again using net use but get the same error.
I have reinstalled MS Project 201, installed Project 2010 SP2 and installed Windows updates and it does the same thing, exactly the same symptoms.
Further, if the user opens a file from the network drive, the file shows in the Project recent files list. If they try to open the file from the recent files list in project they get the following error:
    "Project cannot open the file.
-Check that the file name and path are correct.
-Check that the file format is recognized by Project.
Project files saved in a version earlier than Microsoft Project 98 can't be opened...."
This is a test file that I created on the user's computer and network drive, This is being opened with the same version it was created in. If I browse to the folder in Windows Explorer I can open the file. Of course, I then can't save the file (I still get
the original error). I'm logged on with Domain Admin privileges.
I've checked these links from other threads (neither apply to my scenario):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983458/en-us|
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/excel/thread/2eeea140-7e6c-4cb9-a89b-06d2102bd9f7/
I've downloaded my TechNet version of he software and installed it with Sp2 and Windows updates and it does the same thing. This also happens on the Remote Desktop server (Server 2008 R2) using MS Project 2007.

    Case 1
This error message appears when the document is open on two or more computers that are running different operating platforms. For example,
if the document is open on a Macintosh computer and you open it on a second computer running Windows or Windows NT, the error occurs when either user tries to save the document.
This problem stems from a difference between the ways Macintosh OLE and Windows OLE open files. As a result, you cannot save a file on two different operating platforms at the same time.
    Case 2
This error occurs in Word 97 for Windows if you save to a MAPROOT type network drive connection on a NetWare server where spaces exist in
    the file or folder name.
    Case 3
This problem may occur if an anti-virus program running on a network has the ability to scan for macro viruses in documents in shared network
    folders.
For example, if you have the following:
a shared folder on a network server
    -and-
an anti-virus program is running on the network server that is set to monitor the shared folder,
when you attempt to save a document (across the network) to the shared folder, the anti-virus checker may cause the error to occur.
    Case 4
This problem may occur on Novell networks when the AutoRecover files path is either blank or set to a network drive.
According each, please try the following workaround:
    WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods appropriate to your situation.
    Case 1
    Method 1:
Move the document to your local hard disk for editing. Move it back to the server after you finish.
    Method 2:
    Save a copy of the
    file with a different
file name, and work on the copy, either on your hard disk or on the server.
    Case 3
    Method 1:
Move the document to your local hard disk for editing. Move it back to the server after you finish.
    Method 2:
Do not use spaces in the directory or document names.
    Method 3:
Do not use MAPROOT-drive connections. Map your drive connections to the volume-level only.
    Case 4
Turn off the anti-virus protection on the network server and then try to
save the document. Contact your anti-virus protection software company for additional details and/or updates to their programs.
    Case 5
Set the AutoRecover files path to your local drive. To change the AutoRecover path, use the following steps:
    1.
On the Tools menu, click Options.
    2.
On the File Locations tab, select AutoRecover files and then click Modify.
    3.
Change the Modify Location dialog box to a
folder on your local drive and then click OK.
    4.
Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
    Hope that helps.

  • Why does Project 2010 Pro crash on cut and paste operation, among many other problems?

I guess my question has more to do with this: I'm trying to find a hotfix, patch or update for this. Can you advise?
    Thanks,
    Aldo

    Hi, Mike,
Thank you for your very informative reply. Please accept the comments below in the interest of understanding the problem a little better. I will read your articles and comment on them, if applicable.
What I think you are suggesting is basically for me to provide more information. Perhaps you could advise on how my concern could best be addressed. It's a simple matter of copying and pasting lines until it crashes, which I can't understand why I would
want to avoid, particularly when the actions of the interface clearly support it. So, from a UI design perspective I have to ask, if this is a valid task for an Excel spreadsheet why is it not for a Project spreadsheet?
Please bear in mind that the issue here is not related to the effective use of the product, but quite plainly why doesn't this stuff work out of the box on a simple paste operation?
By "Adding", in my previous comments, I mean go to the "Project" ribbon, and select the "Subproject" button. Following is a very detailed set of steps.
    1. Open Microsoft Project 2010 Professional, in either 64 bit or 32 bit mode.
    2. About Microsoft Project displays (14.0.4751.1000) MSO (14.0.4760.1000), by going to the quick access tool bar, selecting "Customize quick access tool bar", selecting "More commands", selecting from the pull-down "Choose commands
from" the option "All commands", and then the "About" option in the list view right below it. Press the "Add" button in the middle of the form. Press the OK button. You will see the about button on the quick access bar. Press
the button to see what version of the software this is. If you need additional information to help troubleshoot the issue, please let me know.
    3. On the currently open default blank project, first save the project by pressing the save button on the quick access tool bar. I've named this file "Project1.mpp", and the physical file location is the Documents folder on Windows 7. The task
name becomes "Task 1". I then click outside the row.
    4. Select the entire row by clicking on the number column to the left of the spreadsheet. Press the "C" key while holding down the "Control" key. Now select the next row and press the "V" key, while holding down the "Control"
key. Do it again if it makes you feel better.
    5. Press Ctrl-S to save. Now close the project by clicking on the "File" menu and selecting the close button.
    6. Create a new Project file, by selecting "File", then "New", then "Blank project", then "Create". Repeat steps 3 through 5 but this time name the project "Project2.mpp"
    7. Click on an empty row on the spreadsheet. This will serve as the placement location of the sub-project. Click on the project tab, Click on the  "Subproject" button on the left of the ribbon and select Project1.mpp. Your original Project1
will appear as a sub-project. Select a row in this subproject and copy and paste this row onto the previous project. Everything should work fine and your rows should paste.
    8. Now try pasting onto the same subproject on the row below. The application crashes.
    Thanks again for your reply,
    Aldo

  • MS Project 2010 with Outlook 2013 - "send as attachment" missing function / not working

Office 2013 Professional running on Windows 7 (64bit).
After Re-installing MS Project 2010 today the option under
File (alt-f) --> 'Save & Send' --> 'Send as Attachment' is shaded out / unavailable.
Is this a known integration gap between the older MS Project and Current Outlook ? Alternatively, does anyone have any recommendations to troubleshoot and / or enable the function within MS Project 2010?
Thanks for any suggestions , guidance or pointers.
p.s I have tried completing a repair on Office 2013 and the MS Project 2010 from within the control panel.
This functionality is working with all other Office 2013 applications in the suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Visio etc.)

    Julie ,
Kinda / sorta ... In Mid 2014 I had MS Project installed and working (I can't confirm if the Send as Attachment was working at that time...) A few days ago I was sent an '.mpp' (MS Project file) for review. When I attempted to open it MS Project
gave me a warning message that it needed to start in safe mode but then failed to start. This seemed weird and thus began two days of googling and investigation.
I elected to uninstall (which also failed) and reinstall  (which also failed) the MS Project 2010 since I have the media at hand to do so. At this point I was really truly 'stuck' (p.c term for the younger audience reading this).
My course of action was to engage Microsoft Support (specifically the MS Office group). They verified some registry entries, confirmed installation of MS Project 2010 , confirmed files were installed , available and in the appropriate
spots (files etc.) , tried a few 'fixit' tools ,  made multiple suggestions that I spend $1000+ on upgrading to MS Project 2013. After ~90 minutes or so they were able to 'Force' the orphaned installation to uninstall. (although
they needed to install and use a 3rd party tool to do it) We then re-installed MS Project 2010 and verified it could start.
After using project a little bit I realized that 'Send as Attachment' option was non-functional. I spent a few hours trying to research (more google) and finally threw in the towel and cried out for help (i.e posted the message that started this
    thread).
Thanks again for any suggestions or wisdom you are willing to share.

  • Project 2010 SP1 Installation Crashes

I'm trying to create a package that will handle both brand new installations for Project 2010 as well as upgrade installations for those running Project 2007, the latter of which represents a large population in our environment.
I basically followed the same process I used when creating packages for Office 2007, Office 2010, Project 2007 and Visio 2007, all of which work today:
    run setup.exe /admin
    create a new .msp
    make my adjustments (very few)
    save into Updates directory
customized PrjPro.WW\config.xml (after first creating a backup!)
    run setup.exe
I'm testing the package on a machine that previously had Project 2007, but after running for a short time, setup crashes.  I thought maybe the problem was with the config.xml so I undid the changes one at a time, then moved up to restoring the orignal
config.xml file but it continues to crash.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's an issue with the existing Project 2007 installation, or the way it was uninstalled [by the Project 2010 setup] - but maybe its something altogether different.
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My point above is that Project 2007 was extremely buggy and unless files are saved using Project 2007 SP3 first you are likely to experience problems with the files when opening in project 2010. Project 2007 to 2010 with no service packs is problematic.
With SPs applied you should have far fewer problems.
Doesn't look like a exe with SP2 is available yet so you need to add the service pack separately, probably in the updates folder.
If all Project 2007 installs are already at SP3 then no need for this.

  • Invalid Duration error in MS Project 2010

    Hi,
I have a user who has brought an issue to me.  He is a regular user of MS Project.  When he opens up his .mpp file he instantly gets an error of "Invalid Duration.  This is not a valid duration or it is outside the range for this field".
He has tried out every validation resolution option there is, he has looked at unpublished work items, he has also checked it through Excel.  He has re-entered the data, checking the format of every single piece of data.  Nothing was wrong and none
of these checks have made any difference.   If he clicks on the Ok button on the error message, the file does then appear to operate normally with no issues, but he can't be 100% sure this is the case due to this message re-occurring every time he
opens it again.  Is there anyone that has any ideas why this might be happening.  Please could someone throw some light on this ...?
    Thank you,  Lisa

Check if using Macro on the plan. Similar issue has been fixed in June 2013 for project 2010, not sure which version you have seen the reported problem.
    Project 2010 hotfix package (Project-x-none.msp): June 11, 2013
    'http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817385'
You run a macro that sets the duration of a custom duration field for a task in a project in Project 2010. When you save and then reopen the project, you receive the following error message:
    Invalid Duration
This is not a valid duration, or is outside the range for this field.
Type a duration in the correct format: for example, 4 hours (or 4h), 12 days (or 12d), or 2ed for elapsed days.
If its 2010, test with the above cu as its latest one.
If this isn't case, please try using XML and check if that helps.
If above doesn't help, provide information on project version and past history of plan, like was it created in past version and now opened in other version, etc.

  • MS Project 2010 - An unknown error has occurred while syncing to a SharePoint site.

    Dear all,
I encountered a generic error when using MS Project 2010 to sync with our SharePoint 2013 on-premise. I want to clarify is it default behaviour or a bug.
When I start MS Project 2010 professional from new -> sync to Sharepoint by type in URL and the list name. I can create a new project list successfully.  I have verified the tasks are sync to the Sharepoint and I am able to see them listed on site.
After sync, I save the Ms Project document to local computer. Named test1.mpp. Then I close MS Project. Then open test1.mpp again and then sync immediately. This time an error show up:
An unknown error has occurred while syncing to a SharePoint site. Ensure the SharePoint site is running and try again
Since I didn't add anything to the mpp file, I believe it doesn't contain any invalid data blocking the sync. What would be the problem? Thanks.
    Mark

No, I didn't. I just fill the site path like:
    http://sharepoint.com/sites/Project/
    and then the List field:
    ProjectA
I want to clarify the sequence should be:
After sync, I save the Ms Project document to local computer. Named test1.mpp. Then I close MS Project. Then open test1.mpp again and then sync immediately. Then error occur.

  • MS Project 2010 Product Key Activation Error

    Hello,
Our company purchased a version of MS Project 2010 a few years ago and it was installed on a laptop in our office and was working without any issues.  However, that laptop recently had a virus issue and it needed to be completely cleaned off and rebuilt.
So now I am reinstalling all the software that was on that laptop.  When I try to install the MS Project 2010 for that laptop it says that the Product Key is good and lets me install Project, but when I open Project it asks to Activate the version using
the Key online.  When I say yes, it says that the Product cannot be activated because the Key is not valid.
Why won't it let me activate?  It is the same version that was previously installed on the same laptop?  Please let me know what I need to do to activate this software.  Thank you.
    - Sarah

    smonville1,
I think this is an issue you'll have to resolve by contacting Microsoft directly. Have your key available when you talk to them.

  • 1 new update have been added to the project would you like to close the project and apply these updates message in project 2010

1 new update have been added to the project would you like to close the project and apply these updates message  in project 2010.
One of the PM is getting above message and not any recent changes happened?

    Hi,
This message appears when an update has been sent for his approval and is pending. It could happen while opening the project plan, or when clicking on something like "retreive tasks updates" from the backstage menu of MS Project Pro.
The PM should go to his approval center and check for any approval pending.
    Hope this helps,

  • Project 2010 Filter Selector (+/-) Not Displaying

    Hello all.
I'm using Project 2010 and am having a problem with the "filter selector" - the "+" or "-" symbols which allow you to roll-up or expand sections.
I first noticed this with Summary Tasks in my project file not displaying the small boxed in "+" or "-" symbols.  I've hunted around for a setting option that could affect this but haven't come up with one.
Now I've noticed the same thing when using the "Group by:" function and choosing "Critical."  The tasks do group by Non-Critical and Critical - but there's no "+" or "-" symbols Critical: No or Critical:
Yes lines and thus I can not collapse them or expand them.
Complicating things is when I create a project schedule of my own in order to test things and those "+" or "-" symbols appear and function as expected.  The project file in which they are lacking seems to lack them on other
computers than mine so it doesn't seem to be a particular hardware issue.
Is there some setting in Proj 2010 that I'm missing?
Is this an indication that the Project file itself is corrupted?
While a somewhat low level problem, this is reducing the functionality within that file and if the file itself is corrupted them that could lead to other problems.

    Madoc,
There is a setting, (now hidden in Project 2010), that turns on and off the outline symbols and that setting is saved with the file. There are various ways to correct the issue but let me show you where to find the setting so the next time, if there is a
next time, you will be prepared.
    1. Right click in the ribbon area to bring up the "customize the ribbon" item
    2. On the right side of the Project Options window, hit "New Tab" and then "New
    3. Under that new tab you will see a "New Group". Select it
    4. On the left side chose "Commands not in the ribbon"
    5. Find the Outline Symbols and select it
    6. Hit "Add" to put that into your new group under your new tab
    7. Hit "OK"
Now select your new tab on the ribbon and you should see the Outline Symbols option unchecked (for this particular file). Check it and close.
You might want to peruse the list of other commands not in the ribbon that you've been racking your brain to find and add those to your new tab. I did.
If the Outline Symbols option is already checked for this file then the file is probably corrupt. In that case save to XML and re-open in Project. Note, you will lose any custom formatting.
If this answers your question, please mark it as the answer.
    Hope this helps.
