MS Project 2013 keeps corrupting my project files...

I've got a fairly large project plan I've been working against in Project 2013 for several months now. Up until about a week ago, everything was fine. Now, when I go to open the .mpp from file explorer or "recently opened files", Project (the program)
opens, but does not open my .mpp. It just blips really quick and acts like it's going to open, but then doesn't. When I try to just open the program, and then manually navigate to the folder where my .mpp is located and open it that way, Project actually stops
responding and crashes.
I can open new blank project files fine, so I think my file has become corrupt. I've read a few things that could potentially help like repairing Project, recovering previous versions, and removing all links/predecessors from the plan, but they don't help.
I was able to get a previous working version of the plan, but soon thereafter opening it successfully and re-saving it in Project, it reverted to the same corrupt behavior. Interestingly enough, I've found that I "can" open the project file directly
from SharePoint in read-only (I have it uploaded there for my customers to see), but if I try to save-as locally again, and then re-open it locally, it becomes corrupt again.
This is very frustrating and mind-boggling -  I'm hoping somebody else that has experienced this can point me in the direction of a solution. Thanks in advance!!

Hi Ryan,
Here is my feedback in addition to the excellent advice given by Phani.
It could be interesting to determine weither MS Project is corrupted or your file. Since you already tried to repair MS Project through the control panel, I'd say that the file might be corrupted.
In order to repair it, save it locally as an XML file, then open the XML file with MS Project (you'll go through an import wizard) and save it back as an MPP file.
I assume that it is a standalone file, not connected to Project Server.
Hope this helps,

I downloaded the 64-bit trial version of Microsoft Project 2013, but when I try to burn the .img file to a DVD, I get the message: "The selected disk image file isn't valid."
When I use winrar to expand the file and then run setup.exe, i get the message "Setup cannot continue because a required file is either corrupted or not available."
I've repeated the download several times, each time with the same result.
(The 32-bit version downloaded fine, and I was able to burn it to DVD, but it's not the version I need to install.)
My OS is Windows 7 Professional.
    Any ideas?

    Hi FKA-PBR,
Sorry you are having issues.  I managed to download OK from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/hh973401.aspx and extracted without any issues and could run setup .  Worth deleting what you have downloaded before just in case it is trying to over-write something.  If it happens again then
getting logs from you might help establish what it thinks is broken.
    Best regards,

  • How to import Word or Excel files in Project 2013.

I am facing a problem in Microsoft Project 2013. I am trying to insert a word or an excel file into Project 2013. But for each file,
an import wizard appears and after trying all the possibilities, I am unable to finish it. Please help me out and tell me how to import Word or Excel file in Project 2013.

    Parulg --
From your description, it sounds like you are trying to attach a Word or Excel document to a project, or to insert the Word or Excel document into the project.  If that is the case, you actually need to attach the Word or Excel document to a task in
the project.  There are several ways to do this, but in either case you first need to open the project to which you want to attach the Word or Excel document.  You can then use one of several methods, which are:
Click the View tab to display the View ribbon.  In the Data section of the View ribbon, click the Tables pick list button and select the More Tables option.  In the More Tables dialog, select the Hyperlink table and then click the Apply button.
For any task in the project, enter the hyperlink to the Word or Excel document in the Hyperlink column for that task.
Double-click a task and then click the Notes tab.  On the Notes page of the Task Information dialog, click the Insert Object button.  In the Insert Object dialog, select the Create from File option and then use the Browse button to navigate to
the folder containing the Word or Excel document.  In the Browse dialog, select the Word or Excel document and click the Insert button. In the Insert Object dialog, select the Display As Icon checkbox.  You can also select the Link checkbox if you
want to create a shortcut to the document rather than embedding the document in your Project file.  Click the OK button when finished.
Just a couple of ideas based on my assumption about what you are trying to do.  Please let us know if my assumption is wrong.  Hope this helps.

  • Cannot Open Project 2010 file in Project 2013

I have a 2010 Project file that will not open in Project 2013. It seems to be something dealing with predecessors and successors. Project 2013 stop responding when I try to open the file, and when I try to copy the information from Project 2010 and paste
in 2013 it give me an error on every predecessors and successors and does not copy the predecessors and successors. The error is "A pasting error occurred on ID nn in the predecessors or successors column. The information is not valid". then it remove
the predecessors or successors, however, the information in the predecessors and successors are valid line numbers in the file, they work fine in Project 2010.
    Has anyone came across this?

    ProfMelle --
There is a possibility that this file has somehow gotten corrupted.  You might try the following:
Open the troublesome project in Project 2010.
Click File > Save As and save it as an XML file.
    Close the file.
Open the XML file and use the Import Wizard to create a new project.
Save the new MPP file over the old one.
Now try opening the MPP file from 2010 in Microsoft Project 2013.
Let us know if this helps.

  • SP2013 and Project 2013 - project files open in read-only mode with no options to edit only Save As

    Hi all,
    Environment:
    SharePoint 2013 (15.0.4420.1017)  RTM
    Windows 8 - Project 2013 (15.0.4433.1506) 32Bit
    Issue details:
When opening .mpp files stored within SharePoint they are opened successfully within Project 2013 however they are opened in Read-Only mode with no options to edit/check out only Save As.  The
same outcome is experienced if you click the document link within SharePoint or you chose to edit from the document menu.
Opening the file through windows explorer also opens only in read-only mode.
To date we’ve tested the following
    Windows 7 – Office 2010 = working as expected
    Windows 8 – Office 2010 = working as expected
Windows 7 – Office 2013 = opening as read only, no prompt to edit
Windows 8 – Office 2013 – opening as read only, no prompt to edit
Current thinking is that it is an issue with either the SharePoint Office Documents Class ActiveX control or Project 2013 itself interacting with SharePoint 2013.
We have tested this in multiple SP2013 environments with the same outcomes.
The workaround therefore is to save locally and then upload again which is not ideal.
Unable to find an exact issue match to this.
    Any help with this appreciated.

    Hi Dan,
For us after investigating this further it was found that using the document menu to edit or checkout and then edit results in the project file being opened in read-only mode.
The same issue was present for Visio files.
Using the FILES ribbon menu results in the document being opened in edit mode successfully in both Project and Visio.
Please note that we found that this issue only exists within document libraries where checkout is required to edit which was our case.  If checkout is not required the document
menu can also be used as expected.
    Cheers,
    Dan

The printing of .pdf file from Project 2013 stops when the file name should be written. Project 2013 crashes. Does someone know what is wrong between Project 2013 and Adobe Acrobat 9?

The Acrobat 9.x product family passed into "End of Support" mid-year of 2013.
Acrobat 9 support of MS Project via PDFMaker stops with Office 2007.
For Office 2013 support you must use Acrobat XI (11.0.1) or newer.

  • How should we be going about creating and saving and/ or exporting our ODC files using Excel 2013 for use in Project Server 2013 Online?

Hi I need your guidance on how I should go about setting up my Excel 2013 reports so that others in our Project Online 2013 environment can access and updates these reports of mine.
    My questions are as follows:
I presume I need to create and save my ODC files in a PWA > Data Connections folder.  I have English and French users in our environment.  Do I need save them twice?  Once in the French and again in the English Data Connections folder?
     Likewise for the Excel file?
How should I go about creating my ODC files within Excel?  By default, the ODC files are being created on my PC's > My Documents > My Data Sources folder.  I presume I need to get them saved or exported to the PWA > Data Connections
folder. So, How should I be going about creating and saving and/ or exporting the ODC files???
FYI...My oData Feeds that I wish to use and join in this particular Excel file are as follows:

Thank you Guilaume.  May I ask you to help clarify a bit more for me?  If I have to do it for both languages (the reports and ODC files), do I simply copy the same ODC files from e.g., the English to French folder in PWA (Odc files)?  Or does
that defeat the purpose?  Or, do I need to create a new set of oData Feed Connection files with a French version of Excel 2013 and save them to the French Data Connections folder in PWA?  Do I need to have a French version of Excel 2013 to create
French ODC files and ultimately French based reports and/ or vice versa?
I did notice that the following oData metadata command from within a browser produces different results (ie., English versus French metadata returned) depending on who runs it (i.e., French or English user, etc).  As you can see I am a bit confused.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
    iDVD encoding settings:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
    Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

I think that this is related to some of my project pages having accented characters in their name, as all the ????? in the filenames corresponds to just those files, and they are the corrupted ones.

    Hi,
It happened only to that project, and I actually fixed it by hex editing the project. The problem was related to then enconding and size of the filenames in the zip file, I used accented filenames with (If I remember correctly) UTF8 encoding. Some of the characters used 2 bytes to represent the filename, but only 1 was accountedd in the zip headers. I just added one to those size fields of the zip headers, and the it opened just fine.

Can users share MS Project 2013 Pro files on a network without installing Project server?
I am having the same problem but I'm storing the MPP file on a SharePoint site.  My boss and I want to share the MPP file so we can both make updates and use other Project features.  I can open it in Project Pro 2013 with no problems, make changes,
close it and everything is fine.  When you opens the Task List from SharePoint and click on the Open in Project it opens and he can do everything, but it saves the MPP file to his local drive and I don't see his changes.

  • Sharepoint 2013, MS Project 2013 - Task List not updating when the project file is changed

    Hi
I have created a SharePoint task list and timeline from a MS Project 2013 file on my PC. I have then created a new Project file from that task list which then places the new project file in the site asset folder and provides me with a synced copy. I now
only use the SharePoint copy of the project file in my MS Project as any change I make to the project file should be reflected in the Task list and vice-versa
However if I add some tasks into the middle of the project with MS project, the SharePoint Task list is not updated to show these additional tasks. If I open the SharePoint task list with MS Project - from the task list toolbar - the project file shows the
added tasks.....so the MS Project file in the site asset folder is correct  but the tasks in the SharePoint task list is not being updated
    Anyone seen this before ?
    Thanks
    Geoff

    Hi Esben,
According to your description, the error occurred when opening the task list with the content approval enabled in Project.
Per my knowledge, when we enable the content approval for the task list, the field named Approval Status which is required will be created in the list.
However, if a project plan doesn’t contain a field that is required in SharePoint, the plan won’t sync.
The error occurs because of the required field Approval Status when the content approval is enabled in the task list, so we need to add the required field as a custom field in Project.
    More information:
Sync with a SharePoint tasks list:

  • Importing xlsx file in Ms Project 2013

I have followed Mr Dale instructions in his book "Ultimate study guide : foundation Microsft Project 2013" about creating a new Project from an excel Workbook" Module Project Definition, page 125 to 133, but unfortenatly i can't import the
Excel file i have first exported from Ms Project?  I have exported the file "Using new filters 2013.mpp" to Excel format and it works well. but when i tried to import the excel file with the task_table, resource_table and assignment_table
it does'nt work. Can Mr Dale help me?

    Oumarou SANOU --
As I believe you must have done, I saved the Using New Filters 2013.mpp file as an Excel workbook using the Project Excel Template option, and the export process generated the Excel workbook as expected.  If it is any consolation to you, when I attempted
to use the Import Wizard to import the exported Excel Workbook, I see the EXACT SAME ERROR DIALOG that you see!  GRRR!  So, your are not doing anything wrong.
I then tried exporting the same MPP file, except this time using the Selected Data option.  I ended up with the same error dialog you see.  I can only conclude that there is a bug in Microsoft Project 2013 that was not present at the time I co-authored
the book.  At present, I cannot see any workaround.  We should not be seeing the error dialog when we attempt to import a project in Excel format that was exported directly from Microsoft Project 2013.
I will report this to my contacts within the Microsoft Project 2013 development team and see if they can confirm it is a bug.  And if I hear back, I will report the results in this user forum.

    Hi Rajeev,
Since the issue is more related to Project server 2013 products, and here we do not have sufficient information and resource to offer. I'd recommend you ask the question in Project server forum for professional assistance. For your convenience:

  • HELP! Can't open project created in MS Project 2013....

For the last 3 weeks I've been working on a project plan.  Created in MS Project 2013.  All of a sudden, today I'm not able to open it.  Not in 2013, 2010, or 2007.  The message is the same each time:  "Project cannot recognize
this file format.  Do you want to open this file as text only?"  I don't understand why I would close the project and everything was fine, then I reopen it and I get that error.
I've tried converting it to text but nothing happens.  Nothing appears.  I looked to see when I could restore from and it's two weeks ago.  That is not going to help.  I'm under a deadline and can't recreate two weeks of work in 8 hours.
I've sent the file through two different file fix programs for MS Project and both came back as "file cannot be fixed".
    Any ideas??  I'm desperate.  Thanks!

    naw002 --
If you tried two different programs to fix the corrupted project file, and neither of them worked, it sounds like this project is severely corrupted.  I would recommend you try the first two methods that Phani recommends, but if you cannot open it,
you cannot save it to XML.  Beyond this, your only option would be to revert back to the copy from two weeks ago and try to update it.
I know this experience has been painful for you, and I am truly sorry for that, but my advice for the future would be to save your projects in a network folder that is backed up on a nightly basis.  If that were possible and you had done that, you could
have reverted back to a more recent version of the project.
    Hope this extra helps.

  • Cannot install Microsoft Project 2013 Trial

    Hi everyone,
I'm having a nightmare trying to install the Microsoft Project 2013 trial. I've read various forum posts, but can anyone give me a basic step by step guide to installing the trial!!!! I keep getting an .img file which does not open anything relevant! all
i want is a microsoft project icon to click on...please!!!!!!!!!

    Matt --
I think your question is the most repeated question in this public user forum.  Most people download the Microsoft Project 2013 trial version and expect to find an EXE file, which is not what you get.  Instead, for some reason only known to Microsoft,
you end up with an IMG file.
To install the software, you have the choice of burning it to a disk, or you can use third party software to unzip the contents of the IMG file.  I have opted for the second choice, and used the free software from 7-Zip.  If you use the 7-Zip software,
you can unzip the contents to a folder, and then run the EXE file you will find in the folder.  And no, I do not work for 7-Zip; I have used their software successfully and like it.  Hope this helps.
