MS Project Professional 2010 - Tasks and Formatting Lost

I am using MS Project to manage the SRM Program.  This Program has over a thousand tasks and over a hundred milestones.  As we complete tasks and milestones I am formatting the backgrounds differently for ease of use.  I am shading tasks grey
and milestones yellow/green.
MS Project keeps removing my formatting.  Literally, I will shade a hundred tasks grey and then MS Project will remove my formatting without prompting me.
This is getting frustrating as I have to keep insertting formatting.  How do I fix this?
Is this something a Service Pack might fix or am I doing something wrong in the way I am selecting stuff?

Hi,
I'd suggest to install the latest SP of MS Project Std 2010. Then if it is not working, I'd suggest to repair it from the control panel.
Finally your file might be corrupted. In order to repair it, save your file as an XML file (change the output format from the "save as" dialog box), close Project, open again Project, open your XML file with the wisard and save it back as an MPP file.
If you are willing to dig into this issue, send me your file at guillaumeDOTrouyreATgcosiDOTcom (replace caps).
Hope this helps,

  • Project Professional 2010 and pwa hangs when opening a linked project from PWA on Project Server 2010

When I open a linked project in Project Professional 2010 from PWA, Project Professional 2010 hangs with the "Links Between Projects ..." dialog box open.  Unable to move or close the dialog box.  Unable to move or close Project Professional
2010.  The PWA tab on internet explorere is frozen and unable to access although other tabs in IE are accessible.  End up having to reboot to close down project or force the process to end.  I suspect a hidden dialog box is the culprit maybe
the scheduling conflict dialog box but am unable to access or switch and cannot confirm that there is another dialog box.
Has anybody else experienced this problem?
    Thanks,
    Julie

I have seen it hang when trying to open a project schedule even with no external links.
Project 2013 Pro, Link to schedule is on a PWA on a Project 2007 server.
If Project 2013 is open before clicking on the link, there is a long delay and the project schedule opens up in the web tab where the link was selected. If Project 2013 is not open, it just hangs and has to be shut down via the task manager.
No idea why. I can create a link to the shared volume and that works OK. But if I actually try to open MS Project by clicking on the link to a .mpp file it never opens in MS Project.

  • Dropdowns and many buttons disabled in PWA 2007 after Microsoft Project Professional 2010 has been installed

    Hi Team,
I have Microsoft Project professional 2007 installed and also using PWA for 2007.
I recently installed Microsoft Project Professional 2010, and since the time i installed 2010 all the button in PWA 2007 have been disabled.
    1. I could not select a project from "Project Center"
    2. I could not select resources from "Manage Resources"
    3. I could not select dropdowns in the project properties even if the project is selected.
ALl the other team members are able to use both without any issues.
I also uninstalled IE8 browser and re-installed, that didn't help.
I could use PWA normally after 2010 is uninstalled.
Please suggest a solution for this.

Try running a repair on Project Professional 2007. You always have to do this after installing a newer version of project. Always run a repair on the previous version. What's happening is that PWA is not seeing 2007 on your machine because 2010 overwrote
    some of the shared objects.

  • Project Professional 2010 Not Publishing to Project Server 2010

I am having trouble publishing a project from Project Professional 2010 to the Project Server 2010 (PWA). What I am trying to publish is a master project which is contains many enterprise projects as subprojects. When I press publish, it prompts me
to save and if I click yes then it goes through and saves all the subporjects and then just stops there and doesn't publish the changes to the master project. If I press publish and click no to the save prompt then it gives me the status "sychronizing
data to server" for around 15 seconds and then just does nothing after the sychonization finishes.
It usually should be giving a "publishing job done 0%" or "publishing job completed" when it publishes, but it gives nothing like that. I also check the project through the PWA and it has not updated yet, but when I open it for editing in the client it has
everything updated and up to date, meaning that the save is working properly and just not the publishing.
All my subprojects are able to publish correctly, it's just this master project that is not working.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Is the publishing process timing out for some reason? Or is it something else?
    Please help.
EDIT: The progress notification at the bottom of Project Professional just stops at "save completed sucessfully" whenever I try to publish

To check the queue, navigate to Server Settings > Manage Queue and view the jobs that are present. If there is an error when publishing you should see it in the queue.

  • Activating Project Professional 2010 after a crash

    hi there:-
I am looking to reactivate/reinstall Project Professional 2010 after a crash. I have a product activation code having downloaded the software online (no disks). What do I need to do?
    Much obliged
    Tom

    Tom,
It should be pretty straightforward. I assume you saved a copy of the .img file you downloaded to a location that was safe from your crash. Without that you're probably out of luck.
Just re-install from the .img file and when the installation gets to the part for activation, go ahead and activate it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Copy/Paste Resources in Project Professional 2010

I have a Project Server 2010 environment running SP2 and patched to April 2014. I use Project Professional 2010 patched up to same level. I am trying to copy/paste resources from one project to another, but the popup states that the resource is not found
in the enterprise resource pool, do I want to add as a local resource.  The project from which I am copying the resources are in the enterprise pool.  Both projects are in the server.  Why can't I do this?

    Tom --
The bigger question is why you are not adding resources to your enterprise projects using the Build Team dialog.  That is the approach I would recommend.  I believe that if you do the copy and paste of resources from one enterprise project to another,
then the project in which you paste the resources treats the pasted resources as local resources until you first save the project.  Then the software should display a dialog indicating that a local resource has the same name as an enterprise resource,
and ask you if you want to replace the local resource with the enterprise resource.  Is that the behavior you are seeing?  Either way, I would still recommend you use the Build Team dialog rather than copying and pasting enterprise resources.
    Hope this helps.

  • MS Project Professional 2010 - Unable to open Project Plan from the Server.

    Dear Folks,
Since morning we have been facing an issue with MS Project Professional 2010. When we try to open project plan, it takes time and then show nothing on the screen, project gets checked out to you as well but nothing comes on MS Project Professional Screen.
Strange thing, when busy mouse cursor gets released MS Project Professional show "Disconnected from the Server" message with white icon instead of globe one at the bottom of MS Project Professional and disappear after few seconds.
We are able to open small plans but the plans having 4000 lines is not able to open, Project Professional show busy status when we give it a try.
Everything seems fine to me .. Project Server connection .. queue jobs .. no issues.
What could be the possible problem and how to resolve this issue?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best Regards

    Hi Mohsin,
Is it happening for all users or just some of them? Is it happening for all projects? Have you tried on a different machine?
First I'd suggest to try accessing the project plan through PWA to identify wheither it is a network issue or an application issue.
Then check the Project Pro account to ensure that the connection settings to Project Server are correct. You could also try to remove the Project Server account in Project Pro and create it again.
Finally, ensure that the PWA URL is added to IE trusted sites.
    Hope this helps,

    Hello,
Unfortunately Project Professional 2010 will not connect to Project Online / Project Server 2013. You will need to use Project Professional 2013 to connect to Project Online / Project Server 2013. Project Pro 2010 will only connect to Project Server 2010.

  • Project professional 2010: Physical % Complete field does not roll-up to the summary tasks

    Hi,
I have a project plan which I need to set the physical % complete fields of it in order to use it for earned value over time report. I have assigned costed resources to come of the tasks, set all project task's earned value method to physical % complete,
and finally set a baseline. However, the physical % complete still does not get calculated for the summary tasks! It is always zero!
I have created another project with only 3 tasks and 3 resources, did the same as above, and was able to get calculated values for the physical % complete.
I followed the same procedure in both projects. In one I was able to get the physical % complete value of the summary tasks while it was always zero in the other! What may be the problem?
    Regards,
    George

    Hi Julie,
This is what I am seeing as necessary to make Physical % complete roll up to the summary level task.
BEFORE tasks are entered, set the "Default Task Earned Value method" to Physical % complete. File > Options, Advanced.  This will set both the summary and detail tasks to that method.
    Add tasks
    Add resources with costs.
    Assign resources to tasks.
    Baseline the file
Take a look at the Tracking table and enter progress in the Physical % complete field for subtasks. The value should roll up.
Sadly I don't know of anyway to force the change after the tasks have been added.  You can certainly add the Earned Value Method field to a task view to confirm all is set - but I have never been able to switch mid-flight and get it to work correctly.
I did, however, just try an experiment.  I created a file that did not work correctly - Physical % complete was not rolling up.  I inserted it into a blank project that had the option set correctly without linking.  After a bit of tweaking
(outdenting all tasks to be able to delete the "extra summary task", saving a baseline), it now appears to be working correctly.
    I hope this helps.

  • An Unknown Error Has Occurred - Project Server 2010 - Tasks Page

Greetings!   Some of my resources are recieving the error "An Unknown Error has occurred" (in red)  when trying to access their TASKS Page in Project Server 2010.
I've researched this error quite a bit and am finding suggestions and answers pretty much all over the board.    Before I have my server people start installing a slew of hot fixes - I want to know if anyone has an idea of the underlying cause
for this error.    Since this issue doesn't affect everyone (i.e. I can access my task page), is it possibly related to the actual schedule in which they have assignments?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    ~Randy

i have found the solution for this issue, you need to do this:
in the logs you must search the "exception" and the logs give you a ID, this ID is about the task assignment in the specific resource , so this assignment is corrupt.
this ID, you need to merge in the SQL server in the project server database, you need to merge ID task with ID Project with ID Resource, so when you identify the ID project and ID resource you can
DELETE this assignment in the project from project profesional, because this task has a corrupt assignment, you must delete
    ONLY FROM project professional.
This solutión solve this specific problem for this assignment  that
IS DIFERENT TO THIS SOLUTION  post of Brian Smith:

    Hi,
I faced exactly the same problem: some resources try to connect to My Tasks, and get an Unknown error. No error message in ULS or Eventlog.
I hope I solved the problem, and want to share the experience here.
    First, by reading this article,
http://www.projectserverexperts.com/ProjectServerFAQKnowledgeBase/Unknown%20Error%20My%20Tasks%20Page.aspx: even if the SQL Query returns me no records, it gives me the idea to delete (unpublish) some tasks (i managed to identify some tasks which raised
the problem, by assigning a test account on them, and see that the pb happened).
So I decided to delete my project from the Published Database (and keep it in the Draft of course). Than in Project Pro, I opened and Published: the problem seem to be solved.
I don't know the root cause of the pb: maybe some SQL data were corrupted for an unknown reason.
Hope it could help some one ! Don't hesitate to give feedback if you solved this pb with this solution, or workaround.
    Sylvain

  • Project Server 2010 - task shows NA as actual finish but zero work remaining?

    So, here's the problem:
We are running Server 2010, SP1 I believe (Can check this tomorrow when back in the office)
Users update tasks via PWA but have various options around how they do these updates:
they are able to update %complete (as a %age of duration)
they are able to amend task start/finish dates
they can update no. of work hours remaining
I believe (based on early testing/investigation) that users are updating an assignment (in PWA) to, say 1% complete (to indicate misguidedly that they are aware of the task and then moving the end date, this then splits the remaining work) and extends the
    duration
Somehow, what then happens is they update the task (possibly prior to the new end date they have put in) to show zero remaining work but when the schedule is reviewed in MS Project 2010, the Actual Finish Field shows "NA" yet the remaining work
is zero and the overall task shows not complete.
I've been investigating this for some time and it's incredibly frustrating. I'm of the opinion that we need to restrict the way our users are able to update assignments and make the view in PWA force them to update  either
remaining hours or % complete but would really, really appreciate any guidance or other avenues I should investigate?
    Thanks in advance

    DizietSma,
Are these tasks of type "Fixed Duration". In that case please check if there is remaining duration on these tasks. I believe that's the root cause. In this scenario the work being completed does not trigger the task to be complete, even if the
assignment is complete. The only way to mark the task complete, is to incorporate into your task update process, to zero out the remaining duration at the task level.
As far as the tracking method, looks like you have 'freeform' enabled. I suggest that you change it to one of the methods you listed above, which will help stereamline
    Prasanna Adavi,PMP,MCTS,MCITP,MCT TWitter: @prasannaadavi Blog: http://www.prasannaadavi.com
The tasks are fixed duration, is "remaining duration" a field I can include in MS Project? Or otherwise include it in the task update view in PWA? Views in PWA are somewhat inconsistent in terms of what can be included for update purposes
    and what cannot.
Many thanks for your help so far Prasanna

  • MS Project Professional 2010 Re-installation

    Hi MS Technical Support,
I have had my computer re-booted and subsequently lost MS Project from it.  Unfortunately this particular computer does not have a CD drive, and so it is not as simple as inserting the disk and re-installing it.
I have contacted the MS phone line, where they sent me an invitation to download it and register my product key.  I submitted the product key, and the response back was that 'the product key provided represents a product which is not available for free
    download'.
All I need is for the product to be re-installed back on to this particular computer so that I can use it once again.  How do I proceed from here?
    Thanks, Ryan

    You could start from the
eval center and call MS support in case your product key is still not woking.

I located a solution, finally!  It was solved back in 2007. It is NOT a memory issue nor a conflict with other software as most of the forum advisers suggest. It is a pure MICROSOFT problem with Registry permissions. And as they provide no solution
(as of 2014 yes 7 years) one has to use a registry hacking tool to take command  of the registry. The solution that worked perfectly for me is located here :
