MS SQL 2005 SP4 straight to cumulative update 3

Hi guys,
I have a question regarding ms sql patching. We are planning to install ms sql server 2005 service pack 4 onto our ms sql engine. After the installation of SP4, we would like to install cumulative update 3. I have noticed that cumulative update 3 patches less
fixes to the files than cumulative updates 2 and 1. Am I correct in believing that we need to install the cumulative update packages in sequential order or can we install the cumulative update 3 straight away?

Hello,
You can apply SP4 for SQL Server 2005, then CU3 for SP4 directly. CU3 is the last Cumultaive Update for SQL Server 2005
SP4.
Please consider to apply the a security update and 4 fixes released after CU3, as shown on the following URL.

Hope this helps.

  • Error installing SQL 2005 SP4

    Hi Guys,
When i am installing SQL 2005 SP4 in windows 2008r2 cluster i get following error message "your account information could not be verified. Press OK to return to Authentication Mode screen to determine reason for failure. For setup to verify your
credentials the services must be startable, connectable, and you must be a SQL Server Administrator"
I am a local admin on both the box,sql service account is also a domain a/c and has admin privileges also i have added my account as well as sql service account as sysadmin in sql server instance.I had installed SQL 2005 earlier using same accounts with
    no issue.
Can anyone point out why the error. It doesn't make sense to me.
    Regards,
    Viv

    Hello,
Could you try installing the service pack on the passive node using the /passive switch? For example:
    SQLServer2005SP4-KB955706-x86-ENU.exe /passive
If the above is successful, failover and do the same on the other node.
Are you logged in as a Windows account that has the sysadmin role on SQL Server?
Could you verify the authentication information provided to SQL Server setup is correct?
I have not installed a SQL Server 2005 in more than 5 years, I am sorry if I suggest things that not make sense to you.
    Hope this helps.

  • SAP List of Supported SQL Server Service Packs and Cumulative Updates

Does SAP provide a list of SQL Server Service Packs and Cumulative Updates that will work with BPC 7.0 and 7.5? I see that CU 12 is out for SP1 and CU 2 is out for SP2. I would like to know if I can move the SP2 CU2 or SP1 CU12. My install docs are outdated specifying SP1 CU6.
    Any direction is appreciated.
    Joe

    Hi,
Please take a look at the below list of the supported OS: This excerpt is from the installation guide.
SP04 or later: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise Edition with or without Hyper-V
Windows Server 2008 Standard or Enterprise Edition with or without Hyper-V, or
Windows Server 2008 Data Center with or without Hyper-V
Windows Server 2003 Standard or Enterprise Edition SP2
Windows Server 2003 Standard configured on the SQL database or OLAP server components only
Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard or Enterprise Edition SP2
SAP recommends using Windows Server 2008 64 bit over Windows Server 2003 64 bit. Otherwise, supportability is limited.
I am not sure what did you mean by the front end. Having said that, 32 bit is supported both on the server and the client machines.
    Hope this helps.

  • DPM 2010 SharePoint 2007 and SQL 2005 long time Recovery point

Hi, i have two farms with two dedicated DPM for each of them
    SP 2010 with SQL 2008 R2
    SP 2007 with SQL 2005
While recovery point is running for 2010 multiple databases are taken simultaneously while in 2007 only one database at time in sequential order which leads in large time for recovery point of farm.
any recommendations or modification known for this behavior
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have not tried this with SharePoint workload - but give this a try.
Steps to enable parallel backups for SQL 2005 databases:
    1. The fix in SQL Writer to enable parallel backups has been rolled out as part of SQL server SP4. So please update SQL Server 2005 to SP4.
    2. On DPM Server, create Registry Key “SQL2005_ParallelBackup” under “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Data Protection Manager\Configuration”
    3. Create String Value with Name equals FQDN of SQL Server
and empty value, under registry key “SQL2005_ParallelBackup”
Let me know if that worked.

  • SQL 2005 mirroring : Abrupt Automatic failover

    hi All,
    We have a SQL 2005 SP4 mirroring  setup of 15 DBs with Principal(P), Mirror(M) & Witness (W).
We have now seen abrupt DB failovers for some of the databases (yest it was 4 out of 15) from P to M.
Errors were seen on Witness server as follows for all Dbs that failed over:
    Date 07/01/2015 11:07:48 PM
Log SQL Server (Current - 08/01/2015 12:00:00 AM)
    Source spid19s
    Message
The mirroring connection to "TCP://<server.domain.com>:5022" has timed out for database "<DBName>" after 10 seconds without a response.  Check the service and network connections.
    Actions taken:
    1. Network and Firewall team reverted that no error detected and no network traffic between the witness server and db server during the db auto failover period.
    2. On the system side, we have verified that no hardware error found on either VM or SAN storage, and no Symantec SQL backup jobs running nor anti virus scanning during the db auto failover period too.
    3. We did see some high amount of IO activity on P server around failover time. Some IO errors similar to below were seen, however point to note is these errors were not only for the DBs that failed over, but for others including TEMPDB:
    Date 07/01/2015 11:07:38 PM
Log SQL Server (Current - 08/01/2015 4:06:00 AM)
    Source spid2s
    Message
SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds to complete on file [R:\SQLDATA\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data\<DBName>.mdf] in database [DBName] (5).  The OS file handle is 0x000000000000095C.  The offset of the
    latest long I/O is: 0x0000054ff22000
    Questions:
    1. I assumed that the Witness keeps polling P & M on DB mirroring endpoints (in our case 5022) to check that the DBs are online, but Network team says there is no activity on that port, is my understanding correct?
    2. Is there any other reason for DB failover ?

This is common with Mirroring server it is not as resilient to changes as log shipping. Are you aware about
below fact although not directly related to your question
If you plan to use high-safety mode with automatic failover, the normal load on each failover partner should be less than 50 percent of the CPU. If your work load overloads the CPU, a failover partner might be unable to ping the other server instances in
the mirroring session. This causes a unnecessary failover. If you cannot keep the CPU usage under 50 percent, we recommend that you use either high-safety mode without automatic failover or high-performance mode.
    Now to your problem
The mirroring connection to "TCP://<server.domain.com>:5022" has timed out for database "<DBName>" after 10 seconds without a response.  Check the service and network connections.
I would say there was network dip for more than 10 seconds and since default failover time is 10 seconds and for few databases witness thought principal cannot be reached it initiated failover.
Network team is incorrect to say there was no dip (its common with NOC team not to take responsibility)
This Support Article is worth reading specially the network part

  • SQL 2005 to SQL 2014

    The following MSDN reference
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393%28v=sql.120%29.aspx says
SQL Server 2014 supports upgrade from the following versions of SQL Server:
SQL Server 2008 SP3 or later
    SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 or later
SQL Server 2012 SP1 or later
However, in our testing, it is possible to upgrade from SQL 2005 SP4 to SQL 2014.  There are no messages or detection errors when doing so.  Will the final release of SQL 2014 support upgrading from SQL 2005 directly or will there be detection
added to the installation to prevent it?

    Hello,
SQL Server 2005 won’t be supported as a valid upgrade path when SQL Server 2014 RTM is released as the article you posted states. The behavior you are seeing with the CTP version of SQL Server 2014 maybe is part due to some binaries of the SQL Server 2012
version still in use on the CTP version.
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL 2005 cluster rejects SQL logins when in failed over state

When SQL 2005 SP4 on Windows 2003 server cluster is failed over from Server_A to Server_B, it rejects all SQL Server logins. domain logins are OK. The message is "user is not associated with a trusted server connection", then the IP of the
client. This is error 18452. Anyone know how to fix this? They should work fine from both servers. We think this started just after installing SP4.
    DaveK

    Hello,
The connection string is good, you're definitely using sql auth.
LoginMode on Server_B is REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1) LoginMode on Server_A is REG_DWORD 0x00000002 (2) Looks like you are on to something. I will schedule another test failover. I assume a 2 is mixed mode? If so, why would SQL allow two different modes
on each side of a cluster?
You definitely have a registry replication issue, or at the very least a registry that isn't in sync with the cluster. This could happen for various reasons, none of which we'll probably find out about now, but never the less...
A good test would be to set it to windows only on Node A, wait a minute and then set it to Windows Auth and see if that replicates the registry setting across nodes correctly - this is actually the windows level and doesn't have anything to do with SQL Server.
SQL Server reads this value from the registry and it is not stored inside any databases (read, nothing stored in the master database) as such it's a per machine setting. Since it's not set correctly on Node B, when SQL server starts up it correctly reads
that registry key and acts on it as it should. The culprit isn't SQL Server, it's Windows Clustering.
Hopefully this makes a little more sense now. You can actually just edit the registry setting to match Node A and fail over to B, everything should work correctly. It doesn't help you with a root cause analysis which definitely needs to be done as who knows
what else may not be correctly in sync.

  • SQL 2005 64bit or 32bit?

    Hello,
We will be installing an ICM Entreprise 8.5.2 on Windows2008 R2 which is a 64bit OS. Is it supported to install the 64bit version of SQL 2005 + SP4 or should we stick with the regular 32bit version of SQL 2005 SP4?
    Regards,

    Agreed.
I listened to the recording of the TOI again last night and that reinforced it. Cisco appeared to be leaning to the next version of SQL rather than engineer/test support 64-bit SQL 2005. They asked for feedback from partners.
Given that the ICM is 32-bit running in WoW64 (Windows 32-bit on Windows 64-bit) I don't care about SQL at this stage. Eventually all the apps will run native 64-bit and then 64-bit SQL would be desirable.

  • How to get Cumulative Update packages for SQL Server Compact v3.5 SP2 for use on a Windows Mobile device

There are links on the pages for various Cummulative Updates for SQL Compact v3.5 SP2 which look to relate to the desktop version, but are these also available for Windows Mobile devices?  If so, what is the process to get hold of them?
We are seeing intermittent problems with corrupted databases on devices which are using SQL Compact v3.5 SP2 and have seen that some of the Cumulative Updates do relate to corruption and would like to see if these can help to solve the issue.

Just select the KB article, at the top of each there is a link to request a hotfix, you will then get a email with a download link. The 8088 and 8109 hotfixes also apply to Windows Mobile.

  • I plan to upgrade the SSRS 2005 SP2 enterprise edition in our internal web server to 2005 SP4, the Reporting server database is hosted in another sql server in sql server 2005 SP4. Do I need to do anything on the reporting server database side?

My question is what the steps do I need to take to upgrade SSRS from 2005 SP2 to SP4.  The web server that host the SSRS is in 2005 SP2, and the OS is in window 2003.
Our SSRS report server and report server database are in different servers.  The SSRS in the web server is in 2005 SP2 enterprise edition, the report server database is in sql server 2005 SP4 enterprise edition.
To upgrade the SSRS in web server from 2005 sp2 to sp4, do I need to backup/restore the encryption key?  Nothing will be changed in the report server database.  We will still pointing to the same database in the current server, all
I wanted to do is performing a inplace upgrade of SSRS from 2005 SP2 to SP4.
Any response will be greate appreciated.  Thank you!

    Hi Lihui Chen,
According to your description, you want to install the Services Pack 4 for SQL Server. Right?
In SQL Server, Services Packs are used for fixing issues of current version product. It's not an Upgrade, you don't have to backup/restore your encryption key. You just need to download the Service Pack 4 on:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 RTM  . Please make sure you have administrative rights on the computer to install SQL Server 2005 SP4. For more information, see links below:

    HI,

Yes you must install Security update mentioned in KB 2977319 it is important for SQL Server to be patches with this security update. Without this it could allow an attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it.

  • SQL Server 2008 Cumulative update

    Hi All,
Please let me know if Cumulative Update 9 for SQL Server 2008 SP1 has been certified or not. Also what is an ETA.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Raghu.

SP1 was already certified. That's menas  any cumulative patch for SP1can be applied without any problem because it can not cause any problem it can just fix some bugs from SQL or SSAS.
SAP BPC doesn't install any component into SQL server (database server , SQL or SSAS) which means applying a CU for SQL server cannot create any issue for BPC.
