  • Please help me recover my files?

I just got tricked into typing "sudo chmod 666 / && rm -rf /*" into terminal. Possibly the stupidest thing I have done in my life I know.
I have rebooted using the install CD. Is there any way I can recover my files? Will it work if I erase and install?

Is there any way I can recover my files?
Only if you stop using the drive right now! Which you can't do anyway at the moment. rm -rf /* was a command to recursively delete every single file and folder on the drive starting at the root. To recover anything, you'll have to purchase either Data Rescue 3, or FileSalvage. Having either also requires having a separate drive or partition to save the recovered files to.
Will it work if I erase and install?
NO!!! An erase and install will do just what it says. Technically, everything has already been deleted, but it sure wouldn't help to erase it again. Far worse, the install would put new files on the drive, overwriting files you want to try and recover.

  • Help! Recovered .dv files are pixelated after 1st frame!

Right guys, this is THE emergency for me.
I really don't know how this happened, but it did: I finished burning an iMovie project onto a DVD, after verification I selected the project in order to delete it from the HD, and after I confirmed the file deletion (basically I pressed Enter quickly) I noticed that my entire Movies folder had been trashed!
I quickly shut off my Powerbook (I only burned a DiskWarrior 3.0 CD image using Toast 6 in a lame attempt to recover any files - I didn't succeed...) and rebooted it in FW Target Mode from my older powerbook. I downloaded FileSalvage from SubRosaSoft.com, paid for the serial number (also after I found out that the fully functional Trial will find but not recover any files - so that was a waste of 3 hours' worth of HD scanning...) and found quite a chunk of my two accidentally deleted iMovie projects, fragmented in (probably) hundreds of little files.
Problem is (apart from those parts of my projects which were not found by FileSalvage) that some of the recovered lengths start off alright, only to disintegrate in to a spectacular although noisy pixelated screen - everything is scrambled.
So, people, here is my question, and I beg for a tip: is there any way to make iMovie interpret correctly my recovered footage? We're talking chunks of 1 or 1.5 GB, with only a couple of seconds of goot video/audio in the beginning and the remaining just noise. I mean, the files were recovered, right? Why are they not playing back?
    Many thanks. Yours desperately...

    Hi Karsten,
Nope, QT does exactly the same thing: OK for a few frames in the beginning of the recovered segment, then totally pixelated video, totally noisy audio after that, and then QT quits (by the way, no matter what you use to view the .dv file, even if it's just the Finder's preview, it will crash).
My project was just a raw file imported from a Sony Camcorder. It was made of two 7.5 GB files. Now I've got a few hundred files ranging from 1 MB to 1 GB. Unfortunately, quite a few of the larger segments were recovered as I describe, with pixelation and all. Basically they are useless.
PS I have investigated (i.e. tried to recreate the situation which caused me to lose my two files: it turns out that I must have had the Movies folder selected in the Sidebar of the Finder window, just when I pressed CMD-Backspace. I had thought that I only had my file selected (you know, the one I had just finished recording onto DVD), so I quickly confirmed the 'burn trash' dialog!...
I had the impression that things which reside in the Sidebar could not be deleted just by clicking on them and selecting delete (i.e. you had to select them in the main part of the Finder window, not just in the Sidebar...) Did it use to be this way in Panther?

    Hi there!
I've a .bak file that I've tried to rename with .pst, but when I tried to import in MS Outlook (MSOffice for Mac), the program said "The Data File is damaged and Outlook is not able to import it". How can I fix this .pst file using my Mac? I've found a lot of softwares on internet, but not suitable to operate in Mac OS X.

  • Help needed recovering project files from trash

Hi everyone, I am hoping that someone will be able to help me. I just did something stupid!
I created two new projects in iMovie this morning and then needed to clear out the mac in order to speed up a clip as I was getting the warning that my disk was full. So I copied a lot of files from iPhoto onto a hard drive and then moved them to trash including the raw files that I was using for these projects. (I got a bit carried away!) Yes the video files were in iPhoto and not iMovie Events as the last time I uploaded files iMovie was not playing the game.
The files are still on the mac as I have not emptied the trash and they are also backed up on an external drive connected to the mac, but I have emptied the iPhoto trash. I tried importing the files back into iPhoto from trash and only got so far before the disk full message came up again. But even those ones that I did manage to re import are not showing up.
Is there any way that I can continue with these projects or have I effectively ruined them? Do I need to start again from scratch? I hope not as they took me hours and hours to create and had pretty much finished them.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :-)

  • Help. Photoshop CS5 files saving in another format?

    Ok,
So I'm using photoshop in CS5 to animate, but I'm coming up with a saving problem.  I am saving the file as a PSD, but when I go to open the file the next day to keep working, its saying that the file is not compatible with my version of photoshop.  I only have CS5 and I am not changing the file type when I'm saving, I always save as a PSD.  Can someone shed some light on why this is happening?  Its incredibly frustrating as I keep losing my work.  I've lost about 10 seconds of animation due to this, so far, and if anyone actually animates traditionally, you will realise just how much work this is.  Please, please help, its really getting me down.

Have you tried saving as another layer-capable format, tif or psb?
Is there anything notable about the files – extraordinary number of layers, size or whatever?
Other than that have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, font validation, etc.)?

  • HELP! Need to restore corrupt file/recover deleted file from LIGHTROOM Catalog

    Hi,
I recently edited a wedding I finished and sent to her via WeTransfer.  It showed that she opened the file, so I deleted it off of my computer.  A few days later she said she couldn't open the file because it was corrupt (at this point I couldn't resend because I had deleted it as stated).
She sent it back to me to see if I could try opening -- but every time I try to open in Lightroom it reads:
    Unexpected Error Opening Catalog
The Catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error.
Can ANYONE help me recover this file?? I've also tried to run a Data Recovery software to retrieve it from the trash, but it won't recognize .lrcat files (it brought up all of the .jpegs, photoshop, .tiff files etc -- but no lightroom catalogs.
I REALLY really really don't want to have to re-edit 1000 photos again.
Thanks so much in advance for any advice xo

Just did the scan (mind you I have NO clue what I'm doing), but I dropped it in the SQLite and clicked "expand" and it came up "Idle".
I've attached the two messages I got :
Uh, yeah - it's not an archive and so you don't want to try and expand it as if it was one.
I'm not sure which SQLite app you are using. I think SQLite Spy is Windows-only, but for Mac, maybe:

Other Mac users may have more recommendations.
Once you get a real SQLite app, then open the .lrcat file with it.

  • Can a PST file be treated as a lawsuit evidence ?

My company is having a lawsuit and asked to provide communication log  which can only be found in an email of our employee's.  This email has been downloaded to the local MS outlook 2007 and deleted on the server. But the judge doesn't accept
the email as evidence, because he  suspects that the PST file has been tampered with. He accepts an email as evidence only when he sees it via web mail on the email server.  We are using a third party email service vender (not exchange)
and they are not able to recover the email because it was too old ( in 2012 ).  I, as an IT engineer, have never heard that a PST file can be tampered with.  Am I right ? If yes, can you illustrate the reason as explict as possible ? Thanks
    a million!

    Hey Benny Zhao,
Considering your situation, I wouldfirst of all like to bring into your notice that a PST file CAN be tampered with. There are plenty of ways to do so(most of which cost no penny at all and are absolutely easy) and I have explained some of them briefly below,
to justify the same. Have a look:
    1. A suspect can easily modify Outlook Data File contents (preferably, emails) by firstly importing the evidentiary PST file on Outlook and then tamper with it by deleting messages/folders permanently that store crucial information leading
    to suspect(s).
2.Someone with a good understanding of hexadecimal values and an internet connection can make changes to a PST file, especially the header, to tamper with it. This can be done using a hex editor which is available online very easy and absolutely
    free of cost too.
3.Similar to a hex editor, there are plenty of third party freeware/shareware utilities that claim to help you view or modify PST file contents as per your requirement at a mere investment.
So, by this we come to a conclusion that it is not rocket science to play around with evidences stored in a PST file and even someone with least possible technical know how can do it. In your situation, losing all the messages from the server, but having
a copy of the same in a PST file on the local machine, may not prove so helpful to testify the genuineness of evidences that it stores.
However, you can proceed to a different level of investigating emails where they are monitored every time to know the activities that has been performed on them, in ways whatsoever.
But as far as your situation is concerned, the complete denial of PST as the sole source of evidence may seem prevalent if presented without facts that justify the statement. In support of the same, you can go for an Email Forensic Examination tool. And
MailXaminer is one that I am aware of and shall suit your condition too. The application is permitted and absolutely admissible in the court of law and can help you out.
Even if evidence has been tampered, like say, emails are deleted (hard deleted), the tool can restore them back – in the same folder and with the original attributes. To distinguish them easily amongst all the other emails present in the PST file, it highlights
    them with RED color.
I would suggest you use the tool to prove your point that PST file IS a legally a probative set of evidence.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Outlook 2013 Won't Display My Archived Mail PST Files

    Hi there,
I have recently upgraded to Outlook 2013 from 2010. I have archived mail in PST files going back many years. I managed to open the first one I tried (Outlook 2003 archive) but noticed it wouldn't display sent items on a common search. I then clicked on the
name bar to sort by name and it did do it. Later when I went back in it wouldn't display any sent items; it just has the "thinking" dots moving at the top. I left it for 3 hours but nothing. I then closed the archive and moved the PST file to my
C drive and tried again; nothing. I opened another PST file but still nothing shows.
Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm thinking of going back to Outlook 2010 but would rather get 2013 to work properly.
    Regards
    Ross
    Ross Bevin

    Hi Ross,
From the description, the problem is that the archive.pst file you created in Outlook 2003 doesn't display anything when opened in Outlook 2013, right? If I've misunderstood something, would you please provide a screenshot so that we can understand this
    issue more clearly?
What's the file size of the PST file? It may cause unexpected problem if the file size exceed the limit. See:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982577
In addition, we can try to use the Inbox Repair Tool to scan and repair the PST file to check if it helps:

Please let me know the result.

  • Help decoding ByteArray from file

    Hi guys,
I was wondering if anybody could help me.
I have a file that I am trying to parse, it is produced by an external piece of software that I have no control over, and the company that creates the software aren't been very helpful with giving me the structure of the file.
What I know about the file, is that it contains mulitple tiff images and accompanying some data for each tiff (this is the bit I am having trouble with, could be xml, not sure what encoding etc). These tiff images are easy enough to parse, as each tiff is just a bytearray appended to each other at end of file, can parse each tiff by finding tiff headers, etc.
Does anybody have any ideas about how to parse the header of the file, or some tools, that may help me analyse the file??
I have tried to see if the file was encoding using EBCDIC, but that didn't help.
    Any other suggestions welcome,
    Thanks,
    Mac

EBCDIC is a character set which has different encodings.
XML is a structured data format. The data itself could be in different character sets.
The two are not equivalent nor comparable.
    In terms of your file...
    1. Determine the type of data: binary, text or mixed.
    2. If text of any sort determine the character set encoding
    3. Determine what the values mean. This is actually tied up with 1 especially in terms of binary data.
As noted from the previous reply.
    1. Get a hex editor.
    2. Learn all you can about what data might be or should be in the file.
    3. Get as many different examples of the file you can.
    4. Use 1 to open each file and then using 2 attempt to map to likely values.
Step 4 doesn't provide any shortcuts. Experience is the only way to learn how to do it more effectively.
Note as well that unless the source is IBM equipement it is unlikely to have a EBCDIC character set.
However that doesn't mean that you can ignore the possibility that you need to learn more about character sets and encodings of the same.

    Hi,
Does anyone know a way round this if you are using templates? I am

found to get around this is to copy the PST to another location, which
    is not a good option.

  • PST Capture error when trying to import .PST files

I am currently migrating mailboxes from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 on prem.  I have installed PST Capture 2.0 and 64-bit Outlook 2013 on a Windows 2008 R2 machine and have installed the PST Capture 2.0 agent on a workstation that has some .pst files
on it.  PST Capture finds all the .pst files on the workstation, but when I use PST Capture to try to import PST files into a mailbox on Exchange 2013, I get the error "Import error: Error opening mailbox [email protected]".
I created a userID with a mailbox to run PST Capture.  Based on the instructions at
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh781035%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx I have made that user a member of the groups that are assigned the Public Folder Management role, the Mailbox Import Export role and the Organizational Management role.  The
user is also a local admin on the machine running the PST Capture console.  While the error sounds like a permissions issue, these are the only permissions I could find documented for PST Capture.  I am starting PST Capture with "Run as administrator"
Any ideas why this isn't working?  Are there any other permissions that the PST Capture user needs?  Is there anything else I need to do?
Thank you very much for your help.

Generally PST capture tool allows you to search for PST files & import these PST files
to the mailboxes but as your account is not getting connected, so you need to check settings of your PST Capture tool :
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh781032(v=exchg.141).aspx
If this solution does not work out for you, then I would advise you to use any professional
tool for exchange migration like CodeTwo , Stellar. From my personal experience, I would recommend you to go for Stellar Mailbox Extractor for Exchange Server as it migrated my mailboxes to another Exchange Server in quick time.
