MS Word AutoFit behavior

I'm attempting to edit the AutoFit behavior of a MS Word 2003 report generated through the Report Generation Tool, but I'm having some trouble with ActiveX. I referenced an earlier thread I found via search here, but it's from 2006 so I'm not sure if either it's still applicable or if I am doing it wrong.
I've attached my VI with a comment where I'm getting an error. I think it has to do with referencing the index, but as far as I know, "1" references the current table/graph... If someone could point me in the right direction or help me with the solution, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Solved!

Hmmm ... this subVI looks familiar!
Try this (I haven't tried it in your vi but I know it works as a standalone).

  • Change in Word folder behavior since Mavericks update

Since updating to Mavericks it appears Microsoft Word 2011 is having trouble with default folders. The location set in Preferences - File Locations - Documents seems to be ignored. Further, any Save As bounces back to Documents rather than to the document's original location or the folder from which a document was last opened. This is definitely a change since updating from 10.6.8 to 10.9.

  • Embedding fonts and broken up type in PDF's created in MS Word

    Win 7, Acrobat 9, MS Word 2010
As we all know, Word by default doesn't embed fonts when saving as a PDF. We usually solve that problem by using the embed font preflight. The problem is that sometimes the paragraph text is broken up into a billion (well maybe a couple dozen) small chunks of text. When you apply the preflight, it can cause the type to shift position as in the sample:
Any idea why Word will sometimes do this and other time will not?
    Thanks!
    Mike

Thanks, Bill. I'm in a school district copy and print center and we don't have control over how the PDF files are generated most of the time. My initial testing did show an improvement printing to the Adobe PDF printer vs. saving as a PDF when it comes to chunking up the text. It doesn't solve my problem but it does throw some light on Word's behavior.

  • How do I import Word 2007 Template (.dotx) into Pages '09?

How do I import a Word 2007 template? Is there a one step solution, or do I just need to open the template file and re-save it as a Pages template?

    fruhalda,
What is the problem with opening your Word template in Pages and then save it as a Pages template. It is as direct as can be in my view. Remember it is two different applications here.
None, really, just ignorance on my part. It's the first version of iWork that I buy--and my first iMac, too--and I was expecting "Word-like" behavior, which I shouldn't. The applications target a different market segment--after using Word for 15 years Pages is a welcome improvement in usability for everyday documents. We'll see how it holds its ground to larger documents.
I'm glad that, paraphrasing Einstein, I think, it is "as compatible to Word as possible," but no more than only the necessary to import documents.
I may be getting Office 2008 to work around these incompatibilities while I get used to iWork--and there are some features that are simply not there. At least in the trial version I could verify that they have preserved the Windows shortcuts, which has allowed me to move on faster.

  • Is it possible to downsize a large image on the server side (before serving it to the user)?

One of the banes of my existence is resizing the same image several times because of the various contexts it appears in. For example, the main image in an article will appear bigger than it will on the index page, where many article teasers are placed. Then there's the image that goes in the Facebook "share" og. Then there's... you get the idea.
Same image, different contexts, lots of Photoshop resizing, lots of files to keep track of... but I save on bandwidth.
On the flip side, I can target the same (large) image and simply downsize via traditional HTML (width/height) on the browser end, but that will mean downloading a file that is 50-75% larger than what is actually needed. If the front page teaser displays a 1280px image at 500px, that's a huge (and potentially costly) waste of bandwidth.
    HOWEVER...
If I could do the same thing on the SERVER side... in other words, tell the server to take only the pixels it needs from the (large) image and serve only THOSE to the end user... then the same image could be used in each and every context, and only the necessary bandwidth is used.
Is this do-able? If so, what is the process formally called, and where would I begin to learn how to do it?
    Thanks!

That's amazing. I didn't think it was possible without saving files on the server first.
This will suit my needs just fine, but allow me to push my luck even further with the following "hail mary" question : would it be possible for the server to serve the PNG with a width of 100% of the container? In other words, the behavior would mimic width=100% but the server would still only serve as many bytes as are needed to fill that space.
Not only would I not have to create separate files for every resize (we fixed that problem with your suggestion) but I wouldn't even have to customize every link to a specific size.
I'm not expecting an affirmative on this one, but it was worth asking. =)

  • Why is the Location Bar Demoting my Popular Web Sites?

I have been noticing lately that I have certain websites that I visit on a regular basis, some more often than others. Lately (over the past few releases) I have been noticing that these websites are getting moved to the way down the list of shown results. I have a website that I visit multiple times a day get pushed below the level of websites that I visit perhaps once a week. It used to be that if I went to that website multiple times (about 3-5 times) I could push it back up in the rankings. I tried to do this by going to that site over 40 times (alternating between it ans some other random page) and it does not move up the rankings. It is not a big problem, but surely annoying when I have to go hunting for the sites that I regularly visit.

Perhaps I need to add some clarity to this. The websites that I am visiting are based on a set that I frequent. This order was stable for at least 6-8 months, but in the last two months it has started to move the sited that I visit the bottom of the list. In other words, the behavior has changed, but the reason is not known. No different addons have been installed. I have noticed this behavior not only on one computer, but multiple computers. Some of these are synched and others not, though as I understand it, the synch feature should not change the results of this.

  • Appending files to an existing directory rather than replacing.....

I am a recent 'SWITCH' user, having fought my way through many reincarnations of that other OS flavour, much to my emotional discomfort.
One thing I have noticed (and annoys me a little) is that when you copy a directory in OSX to a different location, it looks for duplicates at a 'directory level' rather than a 'file level'.
eg If I have a directory on another HDD called My Music containing files Song 1 and Song 2 and I wish to transfer a second directory called My Music containing files Song A and Song B and Song 1.
In Mac OSX, I get a warning saying the HDD already contains the Directory "My Music" do I want to replace?.....if you do, it does just that and copies over the original files....output "Song A, Song B and Song 1"....an exact replacement.
In the other OS, you would get the message that the Directory already contains "Song 1", do I want to replace.......if I answer yes, the version is replaced but all other files are appended to that directory and output would be "new Song 1, Song 2, Song A and Song B".
I know that it can be done in OSX like the 'other OS' because I have a small cataloging program that seems to be able to append......is there a simple key-press combination when selecting the files that changes this or a register /preference change that could fix this for me? Would prefer to transfer and dump manually rather than have the OS decide for me!!
Still have to use the other OS and find this the most infuriating difference between the two flavours of OS (ie Lost data in file transfer operations in OSX!!). You could argue that I need to retrain myself to think differently, but I find this the most difficult thing to get into my head!!
Thanks...is probably the most basic operation to fix, but please go easy on a 'switching newbie!". Please chuckle silently to yourself!!!
    Thanks

The "cataloging" app to which you refer is probably handling the issue programatically. In other words, the behavior is programmed, it is not using the Mac OS X default behavior.
What you probably want to look at is "Sync" software, such as the following apps:
    - ChronoSync.
    - You Syncrhonize.
    - Folders Synchronizer X.
The sync software area seems to be a mixed bag of applications that could all use improvement. ChronoSync has been one of the highest-rated I've read about. You may also need to consider how Sync software will work if the "other HDD" is formatted for Windows (MS-DOS or FAT32) instead of in Mac OS Extended (aka HFS Plus or HFS+) format.
When looking for new applications, I recommend searching MacUpdate or Version Tracker. You may want to explore those sites for additional Sync software applications.

  • HELP using print function in Finder

When you right click a selection of Word documents or photos in the finder, I see an option for Print. I thought that if I used this option, the selection would automatically print. Instead, it just opens the application and documents (for example, Microsoft Word) and you still have to select print in the application. What is the difference between this and just opening the files/documents and pressing print?
Thanks for clearing this up for me.

The behavior of the Print contextual menu depends on the application.
Some argue that Word does not handle the Apple Events properly and puts up the dialog instead of just printing the document; others argue Word's behavior is the preferred behavior since the user may want to modify some settings. In the case of Word, there is no difference between this and launching the application and selceting Print.
Other applications, Preview and TextEdit for example, don't put up the dialog, so there is a difference.
    Hope this helps.

  • Apparent bug in evict

    Hi,
Table 2 (the state transitions table) in the spec says that evict on a persistent-dirty instance
leaves its state unchanged. It does not say that an exception should be thrown as Kodo does. The
spec in section 12.5.1 implies that eviction may be delayed. In other words, the behavior that I
would expect, if I am correctly interpreting the murky depths of the spec here, is that evicting a
persistent-dirty instance has no immediate effect, but after the transaction completes, the instance
is then evicted. Evict marks it for eviction and this mark overrides the behavior indicated by the
    transaction's RetainValues property.
If I were deciding implementation behavior, I would make all evictions inside a transaction put a
mark, even if they immediately evict the object, so that when the transaction completes, all evicted
objects are, in fact, evicted at transaction completion. So a PNT or PC object that is evicted and
reused within a transaction would get evicted again when the transaction completed. At transaction
completion, the eviction mark would be removed. As you can tell, I kind of like expected behavior
to be simply described and uniformly implemented. It makes an application programmer's life a lot
    easier.

  • Want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but CS6 questions about Auto-Save need answers...

    Hi,
I'm on Mountain Lion for all my "non-critical" work, but I'm still running the latest Snow Leopard on my main desktop machine, running CS6 Design & Web Premium. I've avoided the switch primarily because of the auto-save feature that Apple placed into ML. I haven't found a satisfactory answer anywhere on the web to this basic question...is auto-save a problem, as Apple implements it, with CS6 and working on images?
In particular: 1. I work on very larger files, 4GB+ in size regularly, and I don't wan't the peformance hits associated with constant saving, 2. I make changes to images, downsizing them, croping, color corrections, etc. so that I can make jpg proofs for clients or myself. These are more "intermediary" images and not intended to be saved. I don't want to downsample an image, flatten it to creat a jpg for proof and have it overwrite the original image layered, high res by mistake. Does this happen with photoshop, or does Adobe avoid the auto-save that Apple uses?
I have all the latest iOS gadgets and it's becoming quite cumbersome managing multiple sets of iCloud info, etc. without being on ML. I'd like to make the switch, but at the cost of losing work, etc. Can someone with experience on ML & CS6 give me any input in the matter? And, does this also apply to all the other Adobe apps in CS6? I'm constantly making minor changes and edits that I usually "undo" out of and don't want saved.
    Thanks.
    Craig

So, in other words, photoshops behavior works the same, using save as..., etc. as it did under Snow Leopard? I should expect the auto-save behavior that occurs in apps like iPhone, etc., where i can actually lose the original because of the constant backups, etc.?
    Thanks.

  • Update 1 - Cannot close Metro App and Stay in Metro UI

I installed Win 8.1 Update 1 that became available to TechNet subscribers yesterday on my Lenovo non-touchscreen laptop.
Whereas before I could go to the Metro UI start a metro program, then suspend it by dragging the window to the bottom of the screen, and then I would return to the Metro UI
    start screen.
Now if I go to Metro, run a metro app, then close the app, I get kicked back to the traditional desktop.
The behavior before Update 1 was such that I could stay in Metro after closing a Metro app.   Now no matter what I do, including unchecking the "when I sign
in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of start" in the taskbar properties, I get kicked back to the desktop.
Unless this is a bug, I suppose now this is a new "feature" for Win 8.1 update 1.

    Hey charlestek,
My name is Miron Vranjes and I’m a Senior Program Manager on the Windows team. I worked on a number of features in Windows 8.1 Update, including the new title bar and the specific behavior you talk about in this thread.
First, thanks for writing your thoughts on what you’re seeing in the update. As far as the settings, it is the intended design and Kate’s earlier post does correctly outline the behavior. That said, I’d like to clarify how they work to address the confusion.
In Windows 8.1, we introduced the “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" setting as a way for users to control their “home base” (the place they end up navigating to when they’re not running any Windows Store
apps)—Start or the desktop. With Windows 8.1 Update, we’ve made this the default setting for primarily mouse and keyboard devices.
As we designed Windows 8.1 Update, we wanted to introduce a number of changes for mouse and keyboard users that would help them use and switch between Windows Store apps alongside their familiar desktop applications. A lot of these changes only made sense
when combined together, so they are toggled by one setting, which is “Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar.” This is usually enabled together with the first setting as a complimentary set of improvements for desktop users. When the setting is enabled, Windows
Store apps are intended to feel more like regular maximized applications living on the desktop, though they are full screen only. For example, when you launch apps from Start, they appear on the taskbar until they are closed. You can also minimize them or
switch between them by invoking the taskbar. Finally, as you can see in the table Kate showed, Windows Store apps can occlude the desktop and also each other! This may not be apparent at first but you can see it if you open up Bing Weather and then launch
the Mail app, for example. Closing (or minimizing) Mail won’t navigate to the desktop, it’ll reveal Bing Weather. If you then close Bing Weather, it’ll reveal the desktop. The intention is that this behavior (even the animations) is similar to launching and
then closing two maximized applications on the desktop.
Ultimately this is the reason that unchecking the “When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" setting has no effect on close and minimize behavior when the “Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar” setting is checked,
since they are controlling two independent things. If you tend to use only one Windows Store app at a given time, it may seem like we’re not respecting the setting by going to the desktop, which I can understand could be confusing.
You also brought up that unchecking “Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar” doesn’t unpin anything (including the Windows Store) from the taskbar. The main reason for this is that we didn’t want the setting to be destructive. For example, if you’ve pinned
the Mail and Bing Weather apps to the taskbar, we wouldn’t want to unpin them unexpectedly when you toggle the setting.
We’ll definitely evaluate the wording and behavior of these settings in the future and see what we can do to make things clearer and improve the experience overall.
Thanks so much for your thoughts,
    Miron

  • Missing character options?

Hi I have downloaded the trial for InDesign CS5.5 and am currently following a tutorial from Lynda in an attempt to learn the program. I have gotten to the stage which discusses changing characters but am a little miffed as to what seems to be some missing options when compared to the video tutorial.
I am hoping the image below will show the comparison of my options on the right to the video tutorial on the left. As you can see I do not have drop down options in the font type menu which contain italic bold etc. Also the actual seperate drop down for selecting italic, bold etc doesn't seem to contain the full list of options which should be available. Here the tutorial uses Chaperral Pro as an example, which contains the options for Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, whereas in my main drop down I only have Regular or Bold options. The same applies for other fonts I have tested. Any ideas?

InDesign doesn't show options for any font, it only shows fonts that are installed.
That is, where a 'user-friendly' program such as Word happily offers you bold and italics for any of your fonts -- slanting and bolding them beyond recognition --, in InDesign you will only see real, actually drawn fonts. If you cannot see an Italics, that's because you don't have the Italic version installed. (That said, of course it's possible to mimick Word's behavior, but in doing so you should be fully aware of what you are doing.)
In this case, it seems you don't have those font variants installed. You might want to double-check, in your Windows Fonts folder, and if they aren't there either you could check your installation DVDs -- I'm not sure but I have a full complement of Chaparral Pro, 6 fonts from Light to Bold.

  • Use an existing SPEL

    Hi all,
Goals: I am trying to set the Active To Datefield in a row under the User Management module to readonly/disabled depending on the value in the field.
Knowledge: The page/region I am working with is not customized. I am trying to customize a standard page. From previous posts I've understood that I need to use SPEL in order to do so.
Steps Taken so far: I've gone into personalization page of the page I want to customize (as described by Goals) and realized that the Active To datefield I want to alter already has ${oa.RoleAdminVO.SecuredFlag} under the original definition column in the ReadOnly row. I'm assuming that the code if set to True or Yes makes the whole row read only. How can I call this SPEL or use this SPEL in my controller?

The existing SPEL on the standard page ( ${oa.RoleAdminVO.SecuredFlag} ) would have some business meaning. Just overriding it with Boolean.TRUE / Boolean.FALSE, might solve your requirement, but it would break the existing business logic for making the field read-only with regards to the SecuredFlag.
You might want to analyze the use of the SecuredFlag thoroughly before you could do this change.
I was following your other thread for the same issue. Your analysis on the protected/unprotected has got nothing to do with this.
You would need to get an understanding on the basics of SPEL. To give you an idea, its just a value binding to the property (supported) of a webBean with the values from a data store (VO Attribute). So if a webBean has the value ${oa.current.<attr name> in its property (say read-only).  It means that at runtime the read only property of the bean would be determined by the value of the <attr. name> in the current row of the VO (attached to the table).
In simple words, the behavior in the standard page with the SPEL of ${oa.RoleAdminVO.SecuredFlag} implies that the read-only attribute of the "Active To" Datefield would be based on the value of the Attribute SecuredFlag in RoleAdminVO.
What is your requirement? You want to override the existing standard behavior (with regards to the Secured Flag) and just have the read-only property based on the value in the field (read-only when not-null)...?

  • Sockets, multicast/broadcast, UDP, TCP, SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT and SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE

EDIT: the topic was moved to https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/6b0fbcbc-1139-4d7a-a62a-a5b16a6e0229/sockets-multicastbroadcast-udp-tcp-soreuseaddr-soreuseport-and-soexclusiveaddruse?forum=wcf .
    Hello,
in the project Dao (https://github.com/daokoder/dao) we got stuck upon a problem with a wrapper interface for bind(), which should be multiplatform (work on all Windows versions from XP higher and also on BSDs and also other POSIX systems) and offer the
    following two options:
    1) A safe bind of one socket, one address (specific or wildcard) and one port such that no other process (disregarding the user the process runs under and disregarding user privileges) could be successful with a call to bind() on the same socket with the
same address and the same port.
    2) A bind with allowing multicast/broadcast, reuse of address, port and all these disregarding the state of the socket (e.g. TIME_WAIT) and disregarding the type of connection (UDP, TCP). In other words, the behavior should be the same a the behavior of
BSD sockets in all cases and under all conditions.
The main differences between BSD and Windows are conveniently described on http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14388706/socket-options-so-reuseaddr-and-so-reuseport-how-do-they-differ-do-they-mean-t . According to that, one would say that a solution:
    1) For BSD "0" and for Windows "SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE"
    2) For BSD "SO_REUSEPORT | SO_REUSEADDR" and for Windows "SO_REUSEADDR"
is enough. But it's not true. For example due to Enhanced Socket Security and their behavior described in the table http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms740621(v=vs.85).aspx (after first call to bind() with wildcard address and SO_REUSEADDR
set, a second call to bind() with non-wildcard address and SO_REUSEADDR set will fail with error WSAEACCES).
A solution might be to gather all the needed information (like user id, if there are any processes using that particular socket and if a call to connect() was already issued in case of TCP) and according to this information use the right mix of options SO_REUSEADDR,
SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE and others if needed. We didn't find though enough documentation about where to get all the needed information. Note that this solution would need an atomic query on socket (for all the information) in conjunction with a call to bind().
Another solution could be to call bind() with different flags and decide upon the return error codes. This is though a nasty hack we would like to avoid.
The question for you is, if you happen to know about any better solution than the ones mentioned above. There is a public discussion about this problem starting with comment https://github.com/daokoder/dao/issues/243#issuecomment-60434078 .
    Thank you in advance!
