MS word .doc or .docx attachments won't send or receive in Thunderbird

I'm running Mac OS X 10.9.5 and Thunderbird 31.5.0. When I attach a .doc or .docx file in Thunderbird to an outgoing message, the attachment disappears. The outgoing message sends as normal, but when I go into my sent folder, there's no attachment, and when the recipient receives the message, there's no attachment. I've tried this from multiple accounts, both IMAP and POP, and I've tried it with many different .doc or .docx files, sending them to myself as tests. Every time they disappear. Other attachments--.pdf, .zip, etc.--work fine.

I found a solution to this problem:
http://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/it/FAQ/Thunderbird/
In some instances the Thunderbird mail client may send a .doc file (Word attachment) with the incorrect mime-encoding of 'application/applefile'. Perform the following steps to resolve the problem:
1) Close Thunderbird.
2) Navigate to the following directory: \Users\<your username>\Library\Thunderbird\Profiles
3) Open the directory named with a random set of characters, e.g. "yo6luyl8.default". There may be multiple directories if you have multiple Thunderbird profiles.
4) Delete the file named 'mimeTypes.rdf'.
5) Restart Thunderbird which will recreate a correct mimeTypes.rdf
Thunderbird seems to acquire this behaviour when it receives incorrect attachments sent by an email client on a Mac.''swalvarez [[#question-1050640|said]]''

  • Imessage won't send or receive messages?

I've been having a bunch of trouble with imessage. It won't send or receive messages 75% of the time when I'm trying to use it. I've reset my network settings multiple times, restarted my device multiple times, and logged out and back in. My wifi is fine. Everything else works. Except imessage.

    Hi IssiHerondale,
Here is an article for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue with iMessage:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Messages
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2755
If you can't send and receive iMessages
You will need these to send and receive iMessages:
An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    iOS 5.0 or later
A cellular data connection or a Wi-Fi connection
A phone number or Apple ID registered with iMessage in Settings > Messages
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you selected iMessage for use. If the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use, troubleshoot iMessage registration.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. If a data connection isn't available, troubleshoot cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn which network your phone supports. If your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while you're on a call.
    Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you still can't send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that the contact you're trying to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact in the Contacts app. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.
If you aren't receiving iMessages across all iOS devices
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on each iOS device and make sure that you signed in with your Apple ID. You must use the same Apple ID on each device.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By iMessage At and make sure that you selected each phone number and email address you want to use with iMessage.
If you linked a phone number to your Apple ID with iMessage and the phone number hasn't appeared, followthese steps.
Sign out of your Apple ID in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and Settings > FaceTime on all devices.
If you're linking a phone number to an Apple ID, sign in to iMessage on your iPhone first. Then sign in to the rest of your device one by one with iMessage and FaceTime.
If your iMessages didn't transmit as SMS when iMessage was unavailable for use
Go to Settings > Messages > Send as SMS and turn on Send as SMS.
Select your phone number when Sending iMessages in Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Start New Conversations From.
Make sure that you can send SMS with Settings > iMessage turned off.

iMessage won't send or receive pictures, no matter how big or small they are. Not issue sending pics from iphone or ipad. if i access the file transfer window, it shows the following message below each picture that did not go out:
NSURLSession error: The operation couldn't be completed. (NSURLErrorDomain error - 1200.) ((null))
    Any ideas?
This issue started a few days ago, no changes in SW or HW ever since, so not sure what is going on.

    Hi,
Try zipping/Compressing the files or pic first.
Other people are having the issue and the zipping is the only work around we have discovered so far.

I have just purchased a new iphone 5s however it won't send or receive texts?? I can make and receive calls and the internet is working fine, any one got any suggestions how to fix it? Thanks

Are you trying to use actual SMS with non-iOS devices. If so, SMS is a carrier funcation and you would need to contact your carrier. If you are trying to connect to iOS devices, that is an iMessage, and you would need to go to Settings>Messages and see if iMessage is turned on and activated.

  • Blackberry Curve 9300 won't send or receive BBM messages

    Hi
I have a blackberry 9300 and it won't send or receive any BBM messages for some of my contacts. When I send a message it shows the tick without a "D" or "R" over it and I can't receive messages from some of my contacts. They also can't see any updates I do like status update, display picture update, etc. My BIS is activate because I can go onto the internet and I can use Whatsapp, the problem is only with BBM. I have tried deleting and sending service books but it hasn't worked. I also deleting my contacts and re-invitign them again but that also doesn't work. My last resort was deleting BBM and downloading it again, it also didn't work.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!
    Be Afraid! Be Very Afraid!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
SMS is a purely voice-level service provided by the mobile service provider, and not technically a component of the BB-level services. Hence, you need to work with your formal support from your mobile service provider to resolve this. If you are paying them for SMS services and they are not delivering them, then they need to resolve that. If they need enhanced assistance, they can formally escalate to BlackBerry for that...but you cannot.
    Good luck!

  • How to Open Doc. and Docx. attachments with Word 2013 from Firefox

I just got a new laptop and installed Office 2013. However, when I try to open an attachment from my email or a document from the web, the box comes up that says "What should Firefox do with this file?" I can save the file fine, but when I click "Browse" next to "Open with", Microsoft Word is nowhere to be found. It would be nice to get the document to automatically open in Word. I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, but any help would be appreciated.

Which application opens the file if you double-click such a file in Windows Explorer?
If the default program is Word then Firefox should offer that application as the default.
In the case of an attachment then it may not be likely that the file is send with the correct MIME type for a doc or docx file, but possibly a generic type like "application/octet-stream" that will make Firefox want to save the file.

  • Receiving word docs with .docx extension

I have been receiving word documents with .docx extension, which then open only in Text Edit rather than Word for Mac. It loses the formatting and the ability to edit and return to the sender. Is it because of the version of Word they are using? Can I convert it into a document I can open in Word?

  • Email attachments won't send

I've been trying to email some photos using the Mac mail but they won't send. I keep having to revert to Outlook to send them.
I have no problems sending emails without an attachment.
The problem seems to be with larger attachments although I can recieve OK.
Please can someone help as I don't want to keep having to rely on Outlook?
    Thank you

No email setting would stop an iphone from talking, connecting, to a computer. Two totally different things and completely unrelated. Also none of the settings for your email on your computer has any effect with the Email settings on your phone. Two totally different independent devices and totally different settings. One can not influence the other.
Be advised that most ISPs put a limit on how big an Email attachment can be for both sending and receiving. And that limit is around 10MB for most ISP, and or Email providers. So even though you can send attachment greater then that soft limit of 10MB doesn't mean the person you are sending it to can receive it as their ISP may reject it because of the over the limit size of it.

  • Won't send or receive MMS

My new iPhone 4 fails to send or receive MMS messages. Is this a hardware problem or a carrier problem? (Also, the battery life is awful. Barely lasts a day. But it seems that's another story...). This is my first iPhone. So far, a bit of a disappointment.

Thanks for your replies. For some reason, it's sorted itself out and I can send MMSs. However, now the email has stopped working and won't receive any new messages! Beginning to think the iPhone 4, or alt least OS 4.1 is a bit of a dud.
