MS word for Mac: I have documents from an out dated version of Word on my computer.
My update to Yosemite went pretty well. I have a bunch of documents that were made in MS Word. With the update I can no longer use MS Word anymore. I'm willing to buy Office for mac but I was wondering if there is any other (cheaper but not too technical) way to gain access to my documents.
Thanks for any help or input!
You will be able to open them in Pages, and they will be converted to Pages documents.
You can export them back to Office format, if you need to.
Not everything you can do in Word is supported in Pages. The resulting converted documents may not look exactly the same.

When I try to send an attachment using Word for MAC people have a hard time opening it with a PC. Can I do anything different?
shldr2thewheel already sent a teach-yourself way. Perhaps you could be more specific: any .doc file written in Mac OS is opened with difficulty? what version of Office on mac and what version in windows? any format, e.g. .doc or .rtf? Even a simple rtext of, say, 2-3 pages? or only long docs, e.g. 100 pages or more? what language is used? English or any other West European, Latin based text, or other scripts too? What do you understand by ‘people have a hard time opening it with a PC?’ takes a very long time? or does not open at all? etc. etc.

Does Word for Mac 2011 have an "Overtype" option
I have MS Word for Mac 2011, and I want to be able to use Overtype when dealing with my Word documents but Word for Mac 2011 does not seem to have any option for Overtype. I have seen in on-line forums solutions for the problem in Word
2010 and 2013 but no mention of Word for Mac 2011 solutions. My version of Word does not have an "Options" option under "File", which is the solution to enabling "overtype" put forth for 2010 & 2013 versions.
Is it possible that there is no way to enable "overtype" in Word for Mac 2011?Hi,
As you are using Office for Mac, I suggest you post the question in Office for Mac forum. The current forum supports Office for Windows.

Since installing Max OS X 10.9 "Maverick" when I open Word documents from my LaCie NAS drive they open as empty documents. When I copy them to my local hard drive and then open them the content is fine. Has anyone else run into this? I contacted LaCie and they said "we do not support OS X or MS Word so talk to Apple and Microsoft. I have a thread with Microsoft and here is one with Apple.
Thanks
James AndersonI suspect that the issue with the EFI partition is unrelated to your Mac’s slow performance. I have had this same error message with Disk Utility. The EFI partition is related to firmware updates, and as it is not even booted when you boot from your usual boot drive, it is not relevant. (I was able to repair the EFI partition with Techtool Pro 7 , though, but then it reappeared, which makes me think it is a bug with Disk Utility.)
I’d uninstall the following items, which are frequent flyers on the list of culprits for misbehaving macs:
Blackberry
google keystone agent
Chrome
Perian stopped being supported by the developer before Mountain Lion, so I doubt that it’s compatible with Mavericks.
I have the same 8,2, BTW, and it is very fast. I like Kappy's suggestion. If getting rid of those 4 items above doesn't fix the problem, then a clean install (and not reinstalling your old "utilities" or other junk) will. -
Hi, I am using Pages O9 with Endnote X4, I have recently started a new course and have to submit my work in word.
What is the easiest way? PDF to word or get word for mac?A document created in Pages must be translated during export into MS Word .doc format. As Pages is not an MS Word clone, it may allow you to create document content that upon export, is partially or wholly incompatible with Microsoft Word.
Rather than wait for this potential, unpleasant surprise, you should consider using MS Word from Office for Mac 2011. The faculty may be using MS Office on Windows, or the Mac version. Paper submissions usually are time consuming and important for the course grade. Why gamble? -
Converting PDF to Word for Mac version 14
I subscribed to PDF Export and tested it by converting a Word for Mac doc to a PDF and then opening same in Word. My font was Palatino regular. It opened alright, but
Calibri was substituted for Palatino. How can I change this.I'm glad you've got the problem licked now, or at least understand the limitations on some of your downloaded PDF documents. I suspect those limitations will apply to all documents that are downloaded from the same database or source, and will consistently not apply to documents downloaded from specific other databases, because of differences in the way documents are scanned by different database services.
By way of clarification, let me just point out that what you are calling Acrobat, which used to be called *Acrobat Reader,* is now officially called *Adobe Reader.* Adobe changed the name to distinguish more clearly between Acrobat — an expensive commercial application for +creating, modifying and manipulating+ PDF files — and the freeware Adobe Reader, which only enables you to view them. You'll avoid needless confusion by calling the Reader by its proper name in the future. No big deal, though: lots of people make the same mistake here. (I've explained this distinction to my wife any number of times, and have finally learned not to bother doing it again: she simply doesn't care.) -

Does word for mac work on osx mountain lion yet ?
Yes, the "Word for Mac 2011" version works just fine on my iMac. Make sure you download and apply the MS provided Updates that are available.
Hope this helps -
I have Microsoft Word for Mac 2011, version 14.3.1. When I try to open a document, an error occurs, says file type is "blocked from opening in this version." This was NOT immediately after a version update. Any ideas? Thank you.
Take a look here:

If that doesn't help, I'd suggest you take up the question in Microsoft's own forums or with Microsoft support.

Hi, I've bought a mac pro and installed word for mac, as i wanted to transfer word documents to the new pc. I saved the documents ona usb stick but I cannot open the documents from the stick. What am i doing wrong?
thanksWelcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, check that you are looking for your USB drive in the correct place. To do it, first connect the USB drive. Then, open a Finder window (press the left icon of Dock) and choose your USB drive on the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Finally, just copy the documents you need to the internal disk.
If you want to show the USB drive in Desktop, open Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and tick "External drives" -
Hello. On my MacBook Air late 2013 model I am having a problem with Microsoft office word for Mac where the window for the document becomes all gray and I can not see anything that I have typed or any menus for it and also windows will sometimes dissapear and I am having truble getting them back. If anyone has anyideas of what is going on or could even help me thank you.
Glad that helped.
As time goes by (months or years), keep your eyes on how long Microsoft continues to support Office 2011 for Mac. Eventually you should consider Office 365 or Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. -
When attempting to open a hyperlink to a PDF file on the web from a Microsoft WORD for Mac 2011 (14.3.9) document, Safari 7.0 instead displays the file as text?
As seen in http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macword/has-the-word- 2011-for-mac-invisible-toolbars/018a3ab6-0570-4ad5-abf8-5b6427fdde3e?msgId=e111b f0a-0e32-4fa3-9536-f349dad8439d
and it worked for me:
1. Quit Word
2. In the Finder's menu bar, select Go > Go to folder and type or paste: ~/Library/Preferences/
3. Click on Go
4. Locate the preference file com.microsoft.Word.plist, then Option-drag it to the desktop to create a backup copy
5. Go to Applications/Utilities and open Terminal
6. Paste the following bold command at the $ prompt (it's a single line):
defaults write com.microsoft.Word 14\\Toolbars\\Show_HIToolbar -boolean TRUE
7. Press Return and then quit with Command Q
8. Start Word and test. If the fix works, trash the backup file in the Desktop file. Otherwise, restore it.
In the original source the author also mentions the change in Word 2008 -
I am new to mac and am trying to understand how to do something i did in Word. In Word you can set up document so that you have 2 pages per 8.5 x 11 landscape page. Each page is treated as a separate page. Can this be done in word for mac 2008?
Suggest you ask on the Microsoft Mac forums since it's their software you have a question about:

I am new to the wonderful world of Mac and all of my documents were created in MS Word on my old laptop. I noticed that the word counts were slightly different when I opened the documents in Word for Mac, but then I noticed that they changed drastically. For intance, I opened a document today and after the initial period where the word count shifts, it seemed to settle on 13,171. I left the document for a while to work on some other things and when I came back the word count had changed to 11,677. I didn't do anything to the document. Word counts are important to me since I need at least 60,000 for my PhD Dissertation. Which word count should I trust?
Since Word is a Microsoft product, you should probably post your question on the Microsoft Mac forums:

Convert Word for Mac 3 documents
Sorry for my borderline inquiry: I am sitting on some older documents written by WORD for Mac 3 (in the early nineties) that I need to open again for my work. MS Word 2004 doesn't, neither does Apple Works or even MacLinkPlus up from version 12.
The MS site is not very helpful on this issue, but perhaps you guys can give me a hint on a suitable converter utility.
Thanks a lot,
WGruß dich Wolfgang,
An older version (AppleWorks 5, or ClarisWorks) has the appropriate MacLink translators for Word 3. If you don't have access to an older version (and if the file isn't huge or doesn't contain sensitive information), you can send it to me and I will see if I can resave it in a current format.
