MS word "network connection failure"

We have eight imacs(one month to 4 years old) running OS 10.4 or 10.6
connected to an admittedly old mac server on which all documents are
saved, no documents are saved on local macs. Each mac has MS Word
2008 installed. Several network users are experiencing the following
behavior. They create a document in Word and save, then edit and save
again. When they try to save the second or third time the above error
appears. Yet, they can still open other documents from the server, or
copy the document to the local desktop and then after delete the
earlier copy from the server, copy it to the server. Any thoughts on
what might be causing this intermittent problem. All other network
services are functioning normally. Thanks for any help.

First thing to check.....
Temporarily, turn off the wireless security on the AirPort Extreme to see if the Smart TV can connect that way.
If it can connect this way....then you know that you have a wireless security settings compatibility issue. The AirPort uses WPA2 Personal by default, so make sure that the TV is set to use WPA2 security.
If that does not work, try the WPA/WPA2 setting on the AirPort Extreme. This is a more compatible setting, but it is less secure than WPA2. You want to use WPA2 if at all possible.
However......If the TV cannot connect to the network with no wireless security, it is not hard to figure out that it will never connect with wireless security applied, so more troubleshooting will be required.
Make sure that the name of the AirPort Extreme network uses only letters and numbers....with no special characters like an apostrophe, dollar sign, asterisk etc.
Keep the name of the network short....nor more than 20 characters....10 or 12 would be better.
No blank spaces in the network name.
Same guidelines for the wireless password....short, no special characters, no blank spaces.
If still no luck, I'm stumped.

  • Network Connection Failures Affecting Printing and Finder Access

I have a Canon MX320 connected via USB to my iMac running OSX 10.9.1.  The latest Canon printer drivers are installed.  Everything works fine with this printer and computer combination.  The printer is enabled for shaing over the network.
The problem is that occasionally, the iMac seems to disconnect from any other laptop or desktop computer (Macs or PCs) connected through my wireless router.  On a mac laptop (also with OSX 10.9.1) I may lose access to shared directories on the iMac, and more often, I lose the ability to print from the laptop.  The print queues are unchanged on all Macs, but remote printing over the network fails with the message "printer not connected", even though the only change may have been that the iMac hosting the printer went to sleep.
Sometimes, waking the iMac allows the network print job to go through, but typically not if the print job is initiated before waking the iMac.  The printer queue on the laptop will seem fine, with "printer idle", but as soon as the print job is submitted, it briefly reports "looking for printer", and then "printer not connected".  Sometimes, everything (iMac and laptop) needs to be rebooted to re-establish a network printing connection through the iMac.
Trying to reset or delete and re-install the printer queue on the laptop does not fix the problem.  I am assuming that this is because the remote connection to the server (the iMac) has effectively been interrupted or lost.  The iMac may show up in a Finder window on the laptop as a simple PC icon, but with none of the connected directories visible.  trying to re-mount the remote directories by connecting to the "server" (the iMac) often fails.  It is as if something has happened to break the connection to the iMac, and both Finder and network printing are thereby disabled until everything is rebooted.

This problem is intermittent but seems to be happening often after the Mavericks upgrade.  One should not have to wake up a remote computer prior to connecting to it, or asking a printer connected to it to print a job.

  • Network connection Failure:

this error comes up at start up then intermittently, internet connection works fine, not other apparent networks active, looking to see how I can identify which network item the computer thinks is failing.
I have tried using network preferences to de-activate all other networks except the airport connection, to no avail
Originally this was a stand alone computer running on Airport Extreme, now running in a network with internet connection coming from wireless Time machine and the airport express used to run the wireless printer on the network

Please contact Oracle support for this issue.
Ensure that you are using an ODBC driver that meets the
    requirements listed in the documentation.
Also double check that the ODBC driver is configured correctly.

  • Getting "Network Connection Failure 903" *only* when connecting from a LAN with a similar setup

Hello there, We recently bought a WD My Cloud EX2100 for family storage and we're quite happy with it. We configured the Android mobile app and it works perfectly either in the local network, from the WiFi at work or from the 4G networks in our smartphones. However, we live in two houses with very similar network configurations (same IP range, same IPs assigned to similar devices, e.g. 192.168.1.1 is the router in both places and 192.168.1.254 are other network gadgets, specifically at one house the WD NAS device, and at the other a WiFi repeater). The problem is that at the house with the WiFi repeater in the same IP address as the NAS in the other house, we cannot use the Android or Windows apps to connect to My Cloud services. Everywhere else, it works just fine, but not there. I believe it's wrongly detecting the network as the home network for the NAS device and tries to connect through 192.168.1.254 (haven't had the time to test this though). Have you had any similar issues? What can I do to fix this? Is there any documentation on it? Thanks! Best regards,José Devezas

I have checked it and the issue really is the local network with a similar configuration. I disconnected the WiFi repeater using the same IP address as the NAS on the other network and it worked just fine. It's quite a stupid bug, that needs fixing.

  • Network connection failures

lately, I've noticed that my macbook pro is getting disconnected from my wifi network. it got so bad that I had to create a new network profile to fix the issue. I have been noticing that my Nexus 7 sometimes says that is is 'obtaining IP address' ... but I usually need to reboot my router... is this a dying router or is it just my Mac?

I spoke to google tech support, and they thought my nexus 7 was the issue, not the router, but in the mean time, the issue went away on its own. if I have this problem again, I would most likely get a wifi modem from AT&T since my existing DSL modem is from 2004 (its a speedstream 5100 and it was sent to me in june 2004). would that be the best option, or would you suggest just getting a new router?

  • Office Word 2008 crashes when trying to open a local stored document ONLY if network connection is down

Sorry to bother you all but I have a situation I can't find a solution for:
on a MBP 2009, running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and MS Office 2008 (up to date), if I open a local stored document AND the unit is connected to the network everything works fine.
As soon as I switch off the network connection and I open a local stored document Word freezes and within "Force quit..." I can see that Word is no longer responding. A few minutes later OS X quits Word and that's it.
I already checked Safe boot, removing the Microsoft plist's and reinstalling MS Office 2008 including all available updates but the situation is still the same.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance
    Robert

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

  • Word 2008 A file error has occurred. Check your network connections . . .

Word 2008 12.1.2 throws an error dialog when trying to save a docx file:
"A file error has occurred. Check your network connections or make sure the disc is properly inserted and not defective (nameoffile.docx)"
Newsgroups recommend to trash the Normal.dotm and let Word re-create that template but that doesn't solve the problem.
Newgroups also recommend specifying the file location of User Templates. That's doesn't help either.
A new file, however, does not appear to be a problem after following these suggestions. So there may be something wrong with my file.
I suspect it has something to do with the gutter and mirror margins because when these features are manipulated, Word 2008 inserts an extra "section next page" that I am not happy with, and the page numbering and sometimes section numbering gets thrown off.
Actually, I don't care WHY it's happening. I just want to know HOW to avoid this error. I cannot save changes to an important docx file anymore.
My work around: "Save as" to doc format and continue working!
However, I would prefer to keep working in docx format because Word bloats doc files incessantly, but docx seems to keep file size in check.

that was only a temporary fix. It didn't work well for long. Back to problems with both doc and docx versions of the same file.
Are there any other general swathes I can make, e.g. repair permissions (been there, done that)? I have trashed Normal.dotm, the 2008 preference files and repaired permissions.
docx files throw the error dialog, doc files crash Word on a regular basis.
    Any more ideas?

  • 4.2 Update Failure. "The network connection timed out"

After downloading 4.2 just before installation the error message pops up:
"The was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "XXX". The network connection timed out.
Make sure your network setting are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later"
This happens on different machines in different locations (IPs).
What is it and to fix it???

I have had the same problem trying to update to 4.3 on both my iphone 4 and my kids' ipod touches. The problem seems to come after the huge 400-700MB downloads when itunes extracts the software or verifies the download with Apple. This is what seems to get blocked by the firewall.
Turning off Kaspersky Internet security for the duration of the software download and update sorted the problem.
I could not find a different solution. Once it is completed then you can re-enable your security software.
If you are really paranoid about turning off your security software then I guess you will need to mess around with the firewall settings to allow itunes free access through the firewall but it may take some trial and error.

The log is huge so I invite you to check out the 'FailedDistributionLog.log' log in the 'FailedDistributionError5' folder of my OneDrive.
    The hierarchy is simple:
single primary site with a local SQL installation, management point role (among other roles)
five other servers acting as the distribution points: 1 local, 4 remote
Something has changed recently because distribution was working fine up until I believe this week.  I suspect some GPO is in place (or not in place) which is causing trouble, but I have not been successful in confirming that or isolating the issue to
anything other than "it affects my 2008 R2 servers".
    What I've checked so far:
the site server (2008 R2 Standard) has no issues during distribution to itself
Local DP win7dp01 has no issues during distribution (this is a Windows 7 DP just for testing/proof of concept purposes)
Remote DP 2003dp01 (Server 2003) has no issues during distribution
    Remote DP's 2008dp01, 2008dp02 & 2008dp03 (all 2008 R2 Standard) are producing the errors above
Site System Installation Account is set to 'Use the site server's computer account to install this site system'
All servers are joined to the same domain
All servers are members of an SCCM Servers AD security group
All servers have the above SCCM Servers AD security group added to the local administrators group
As part of troubleshooting, I've added the Site Server by name (domain\servername) to the local administrators group, in addition to the AD security group which its already a member of, to the three 2008 DP's that are failing.  (The Windows 7 and 2003
DP's don't have this setup because they seem to be working fine with the AD security group.)
The firewall is disabled [via GPO] on all these servers & DP's
The ADMIN$ share is available & accessible on the three 2008 DP's
The three 2008 DP's have NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS only on the root drive (not the data drive)
The three 2008 DP's have Data drives which house the SCCMContentLib, SMSPKG$, SMS_DP$, SMSPKGSIG$ & RemoteInstall directories.
I checked the Share & NTFS permissions for the SCCMContentLib, SMSPKG$, SMS_DP$, SMSPKGSIG$ & REMINST shares, and local Administrators have full access/full control
The three 2008 DP's have at least 100GB free; this package is under 1MB.
The file 2 files in this package (one XML & one CMD) have very short file name lengths
The files in this package are not currently in use.  (I've edited, renamed & moved them to be sure)
RSOP of the server confirms firewall is disabled (I checked wf.msc manually anyway)
Under Component Status, SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGER is showing critical errors for the three 2008 DP's.  I've copied up the relevant entries from the log up to my OneDrive as 'SMS_DISTRIBUTION_MANAGERLog.log'.
In short there are two error codes:
    2323 with a description of:
Distribution Manager failed to connect to the distribution point.
Possible cause: Distribution Manager cannot access the distribution point machine because of access permissions issues.
Solution: Make sure that the site server machine account or Site System Installation account has administrative permissions on the distribution point machine.
Retry Interval is 5 minutes, number of retries left is 3.
    2302 with a description of:
Distribution Manager failed to process package "My (Package)" (package ID = PRI000D9).
Possible cause: Distribution Manager does not have access to either the package source directory or the distribution point.
Solution: Verify that distribution manager can access the package source directory/distribution point.
Possible cause: The package source directory contains files with long file names and the total length of the path exceeds the maximum length supported by the operating system.
Solution: Reduce the number of folders defined for the package, shorten the filename, or consider bundling the files using a compression utility.
Possible cause: There is not enough disk space available on the site server computer or the distribution point.
Solution: Verify that there is enough free disk space available on the site server computer and on the distribution point.
Possible cause: The package source directory contains files that might be in use by an active process.
Solution: Close any processes that maybe using files in the source directory. If this failure persists, create an alternate copy of the source directory and update the package source to point to it.
I stood up 1 more DP on a 2003 servers which completed successfully.  Its already received content error-free.  I'll enable PXE & verify that works before standing up my final 2003 DP.  I don't have any other 2008 servers I could test
this on which complicates this a bit.
Before I go standing up more [2008] servers, what else could I be testing/validating?

Tried to redistribute again this early morning and it looks like many packages succeeded but not all.  For instance a .NET package I deployed reached 7 of 8 DP's, Dell CCTK reached 5 of 8 etc..
So seemingly by magic some DP's like some packages but not others.  I quit.
distmgr log shows access denied errors as before:

  • Painfully slow network connection

I am trying to evaluate the prospect of installing OS X Server 10.5 on a G5 tower at my workplace, and one of the primary issues is the speed of the office network. Perhaps due to the fact that we are physically located in two different buildings, we not infrequently have problems with some computers connecting to the server (currently running OS X 10.4 [Client]). When connecting via AFP, for example, some computers time out trying to connect or grind to a halt trying to open or save a Word document or something. The server also tries to back up all of our machines using Retrospect, and while some computers transfer files at around 100Kbps, some are around 2K or, again, just time out.
I'm trying to get the network folks to look into these issues, but my basic question is this: if I want to have people able to log in and use their home directory on any computer, can I set things up such that if a given computer has a terribly slow connection to the internet, they can at least login to some local account instead? Ideally, if on their own computer, the fallback would be a cached copy of their own home directory, a la Portable Home Directories. I'd probably be happy with just a vanilla account, though.
In the same vein, if someone logs in using their network home directory, but the network connection goes to ****, will they be unable to do anything? Will they at least be able to log out and switch to a local account? I suppose that this would only work if each computer archived a copy of the user account of any user that logged in using it.
Thanks for any advice you have on implementing this sort of scheme,
    Greg

    {quote}With the AirPort Extreme, in the AirPort panel, Wireless tab, click on the button for "Wireless Network Options", check the box for "5 GHz Network Name", and enter a different network name. (That can be trivially different, such as the name of the main network suffixed with an underscore and the digit 5.) Once configured that way, connect your "N" gear to each network in turn to see if one is any better than the other. (If you're wondering what effect this would have, it allows segregating your "N" gear from the older gear to prevent the older gear from slowing down your network. However, distance and interference from things like walls may negate any advantage.){quote}
William: I was gone most of yesterday, but had a chance to implement your recommendations today. I added the 5 GHz network as you suggested, but in order to connect to that at all with my 802.n11 MacBokk Pro, I need to be within a few feet of the AE (base station). If I try to access that network even from the next room (well within reach of both the AE and the livingroom AX, I get one bar and "failure to connect" messages just trying to logon to that network.
However, I did some experimenting that (as of right now, anyway) resulted in much faster network access, not only from my MacBook, but also from the older iMac which is the furthest Mac from the AE. According to my wife, that iMac is "loading web pages faster than I've ever seen them!"
    Here's what I did:
    1. Moved all three units to places where it seemed they would have the least amount of interference with the clearest path from unit to unit, also raising the height of both AXs from about 2-3 feet from the floor to about 5-6 feet from the floor.
    2. Changed one setting on the AE (base station): Wireless Tab > Wireless Network Options > Multicast Rate ---> Changed this from Low to High.
I have a feeling the location shifts made the real difference, but I will try changing the multicast rate back to "Low" just to see what happens.

  • I'm having strange random connection failures. Are there ineffieciency in my config?

I've been having strange, random connection failures and I'm trying to eliminate possible causes.
What happens is while I'm browsing on the net over wifi, a link will at random not connect to the site, but instead fault to the ISP error page. It happens with highly reliable sites like google, or ebay, or whatever. If I direct connect to the cable modem, the problem site is immediately available.
I'm sitting <6 feet from a 871W router (with antenna). There's one router in my building and others are at my neighbors.
Below is the conf file. Just to imagine how rediculious this problem is, here's a screen shot from a web page. This shows a web page I visited, and after clicking on a link (an embedded youtube video), the error showed up within the page itself.
Why would only some URLs fail to connect? Is there inefficiencies in my config?

I removed the ip router 0 0 to no great effect, which I consider to be a win.
I'm guessing that since overload is what--I understand--translates the one outside to the many inside IPs, that the suggestion to have only one overload configured means I should combine the two ip ranges into one.
I deleted 10.0.0.0 network. Changed the bridge references to 1 and vlan references to 1. Now wifi and ethernet should all be using the same internal network? That's the idea, right? Any more fat?

  • There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection..

    hello,
there has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost.
this is the error my client gets sometimes when he wants to save a word document.
when i go in the finder i have no problem accessing that network share, and when i look up the file and check the permissions there is no reason why this error should occure.
    situation :
    1 os 10.3.9 server
    7 os 10.5.5 clients
    1 os 10.3.9 client
office 2004 for mac (version 11.50)
there are 2 10.5.5 clients (emacs) with this problem on a regular base (3-5 times a week). One imac 17" 10.5.5 has this once a month.
it is a wired cat5 network.
any idea what could cause this problem?
    thanks
    Marco

I found a logical explanation on the following site : http://www.makemacwork.com/office-2004-wont-save-to-server.htm , I am gonna try the steps they describe and post back the result.

  • Can't connect to iTunes store?  "Network connection refused..." FIXED!!!

See if this helps in your situation:
OK, all you people all over the world who have been having the same problem as me for weeks, months, a lifetime, here it is! If your warning/error reads "iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. The network connection was refused" and then the BS about checking to make sure your connection is active, well I found something on a forum at Digg.com that with one click WORKED LIKE MAGIC and I'm a happy camper now, rockin to stuff I finally got from the store.
Now before I print the fix, my previous situation was: I could connect to the Apple store site for products, etc. and could check my account, but I could not connect to the music store at all. In every other way, my internet connectivity was flawless. I tried to solve the problem, shut down every firewall or antivirus program I had, searched forums, fiddled with the registry (and THAT was a stupid move!), reinstalled itunes like HOW MANY TIMES, and even finally got a written email reply from iTunes support when I waah.., waah..., waah..ed long enough and they gave an answer that was WORSE than useless. Months passed. So if the above in total or in part describes you, her it is. It's safe and if it doesn't work, you can put things back the way they were without any problem.
This is the quote from the forum at Digg.com that did it for me:
"figured out the problem thanks to Peter on the badapple forums, in his great assistance:
"In your windows\system32\drivers\etc directory there is a file called hosts. Open it in notepad. You will see a line
    127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
place a # in front of that line so that it looks like this:
    #127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
and save the file. your problem should be resolved!"
That's it guys and gals. Also you might be sure that the phobos.apple.com domain is specifically allowed by your firewall/A-V software. Let me know if it helped!

SUCCESS!!! I tried many variations on this and it finally worked. Yes, as life4living says, you have to open the "hosts" file that you can find in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
    ... use NotePad ...
At the bottom of the file, I found
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    and nothing about phobos.
AFter many attempts, I changed the end of the HOSTS file to this:
    # 127.0.0.1 localhost
    # 127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
and now iTunes music store and podcasts open up just fine.
Strange. The # character means "this is a comment" - so it's basically the same as removing the line completely.
The address 127.0.0.1 means "my machine" and this address is used by other apps such as Google Desktop. Hatching it out, however, does not adversely affect Google Desktop. So basically you have to hatch out any 127.0.0.1 address in the HOSTS file and then iTunes will work!
    Try it...
(I did, also, add phobos.apple.com to my "trusted sites" in Internet Explorer settings, but I don't think this was essential.)
After performing the above I found it only worked once after rebooting. I uninstalled Spybot Search and Destroy because it wouldn’t maintain some of the start up settings and cookies were getting nuked by another program I have in start up (Windows Washer).
Some other threads said to check firewall settings. I have free AVG. I went in and okay’d anything to do with iTunes. I also added the iTunes program to the list of approved processes in the AVG list and it seems iTunes is now working! Hope this helps!

    It's for windows.
    1. Press the Start Button in the (default) bottom
    left hand corner.
    2. Click on "My Computer".
    3. Click on (Default) C:.
    4. Find "WINDOWS" and open.
    5. Find "system 32" and open.
    6. Find "drivers" and open.
    7. Find "ect" and open.
    8. Find "hosts" and open.
    9. For a XP, a popup will open and show options to
    open it in.
    10. Select "Notepad" or "Word" or what ever you use
    for writing a document.
    11. At the bottom, if it says "127.0.0.1 localhost"
C&P This Over the 127.0.0.1 localhost:
    #127.0.0.1 localhost
    #127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com
    If it only has 127.0.0.1 phobos.apple.com, add a "#"
    at the beginning.
    12. Restart your computer.
    Hope that helps!

    This helped my error! Thanx!

  • Network connection to Deskjet 3050A keeps dropping out for a few seconds

Every few minutes (sometimes only a couple of minutes, sometimes a fair bit longer) an alert pops up in the Notification area of my Windows 7 computer telling me that "Scan to computer is no longer activated. The network connection has been lost" (at least I think those are the exact words - it is only onscreen for a few seconds at a time). Scanning and printing appears to work fine otherwise *except* that I cannot print large document files (e.g. photos), because printing stops when the network connection is lost and, even though the connection appears to come back up again almost immediately, does not appear to carry on where it left off.
I think I've tried all the "standard" advice - i.e. remove and reinstall the HP software and drivers, checked for updates, given the printer a static IP address, made sure the wireless channel is well away from any others nearby, printer (and PC) close to router (and signal strength good), all to no avail.
Any suggestions where to look next? I've had the same Wi-Fi network in my house for a few years now and no problems apparent.

    Hi Roymondo,
What is the brand and model of your router?
Try changing the channel of the router to 11, or change the encryption to WPA.
Show support by clicking the blue Kudos star in the post that resolved your problem. Doing so will help other forum members find their solutions too.
    Herculean,
It is a Sky badged Netgear router. Can't tell the model, sorry. It is already on Ch11 (advice elsewhere on this site is to use Ch1 or Ch11). I'll maybe try changing to WPA - but with various PCs, phones and iPads already accessing the network, I may just leave it until the weekend, when I will have a bit more time to spend on it.
