MS Word opens in Acrobat Reader

Running Win XP Pro and Acrobat Reader 9.
Whenever I attempt to open a MS-Word document, Acrobat reader opens up and tells me that the file type is not supported. Why would my opening an MS-Word .doc file make Acrobat Reader open up instead of the .doc file simply opening up into MS-Word like it is supposed to? If I uninstall Acrobat Reader, Word files open up in Office just like they are supposed to but with Acrobat Reader installed, I have this problem.

You have to quit Word before you shut down (Command-Q or in the drop down menu).
not just close a window- this does not quit the app.
ML default is to relaunch open programs when you shut down- Unless you disable this feature.

how to open adobe acrobat reader without having to open photoshop? i keep getting this message when opening pdf files. "adobe acrobat was installed as part of a suite. to enable adobe acrobat, please start another component of this suite(such as photoshop)

Are you mixing Adobe Acrobat with the Adobe Reader?
If you have Acrobat on your computer you need to associate PDFs with Reader to open in it.
You also need to get the latest security patches for Reader.

  • InDesign wants to open in Acrobat Reader--please help!

I am new to this forum...I have Adobe Master Collection CS 5.5. When I try to open an InDesign CS 5.5 document--from a folder for example, it tries to open up in Acrobat Reader which it can't do. I have to launch InDesign and open the document up with File/Open. Bridge gives me the same thing--wanting to open with Acrobat Reader. In my earlier version CS 3, I could click on an ID file and both the file and program would open. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it!

    Hi Bob,
I'm also forced to open my .indd files from the file menu, otherwise they
open in Acrobat, and yes, I did uninstall CS3 after I installed CS4 because
I didn't want to be stuck with nothing in case CS4 failed to install.
So what can I do now, please?
    Thanks,

Best thing would be to uninstall and reinstall. Personally, I'd reinstall both versions (in order). There is no need to uninstall older versions from a compatibility standpoint, and if you need to edit a legacy file you may find you want CS3. If you uninstalled to save some drive space, odds are good it's time to think about installing a larger hard drive anyway. It's your data files, not applications, that eat up the dirve space in a hurry.

  • "open in preview" leads to open in acrobat reader

    HI,
You can select a specific application to open a document. Do this if you prefer using a certain application or if you don’t have the application that was used to create the document.
To change the application that opens a document:
Select the document and choose File > Get Info.
Click the triangle next to “Open with” to expand the section.
Choose an application from the pop-up menu, or choose Other to locate a different application.
If you want to use that application to open all documents of the same type as the current document and created by the same application, click Change All.
If you want to open a document in a different application without changing the application that normally opens it, Control-click the document, choose Open With, and then choose the application you want to use. You can also drag the document to the application’s icon in the Dock or in the Finder.

  • Click on download of pdf opens adobe acrobat reader, but then clicking on file save-as does not give a dialog box to change the name or location where it is sav

    Using Firefox 19.02
When I receive an email with an Excel, Word, or PDF file attachment, and I click download, firefox opens up the associated program for all my users, however when you click on file>save-as you are not presented with the dialog box to perform a save.
Excel and Word, no fix at all. Other than different browser or to click download, right click and go to folder, and then copy it out of there to another folder and open it.
Help, what is going on here????

  • PDF Opens Fine in Acrobat Reader (Windows), Won't Open in Acrobat Reader (Playbook)

Hi.  Anyone have a suggestion for a PDF file that opens fine in Adobe Acrobat Reader on one platform (in my case, both Windows Vista and Windows 7), but won't open on another (in my case, Blackberry Playbook)? This is a camera operation manual from Pentax: I have downloaded it from Canadian, US and Japanese websites (different file names, same file size), but always get the same result.
Here are some of the details:
    1. I can see the PDF file on both platforms, and it's the same size on both platforms (i.e. it's not a copying error creating a null-sized file on the Playbook).
    2. Technically, you could say it "opens" on the Playbook, because Adobe Acrobat Reader launches... but the document reads like a zero-page blank file.
    3. All the other PDFs I've ever used on the Playbook are fine: I have PDFs with hundreds more pages than this one, and they read and open OK.
I would get around the problem by saving the PDF in a different format, but password protection is preventing me from doing that.
Any suggestions you can offer will be welcome.
    Thanks.

Hi Kenneth, I am having this same issue but I am in a domain controlled environment.  What I discovered is that I had to go to the actual exe file in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe then right click on the exe, run as local administrator.  Then I got a pop-up talking about this protected mode that I have seen in other places.  I chose to ALWAYS open with protected mode disabled.  Then my reader opened and worked perfectly.  UNTIL I closed it and tried to open it again as my user.  My problem is that I can't even get to the settings as my user to be able to disable protected mode.  It seems the setting change is user to user not system wide.  I hope this helps.  Hopefully though I can get some help on being able to disable protected mode for the whole system.  I currently can't find a registry key...there must be one!!

  • Anybody can copy my signature from signed documents opened in Acrobat Reader. How do I prevent that?

The problem occurs when I take a word document in which I've pasted a jpeg of my signature and save it to pdf. I can go straight into Acrobat Reader and make a copy of the signature. That never used to happen. Is there some way to fix that? I see this as a major security problem.

It's always been quite easy to do so not sure why you think that.
You can't keep anyone from copying anything from a PDF document. At the very least they can do a screen grab.

  • Gmail attachment open in acrobat reader

    On android phone.
Can not open attachment .pdf in acrobat reader, some other program opens.
Question is, how to change so it always opens in acrobat like before?

    Hi,
It seems like you have set another app as the default viewer for PDFs. To change the same, please follow these steps:
    1. On your android device, go to Settings.
    2. Within Settings, go to Apps and then select the app which is currently set as the default viewer for PDFs.
    3. Find 'Clear Defaults' button under it and tap on it.
Next time you open a PDF file, you will be asked which viewer to open it in. Select 'Adobe Reader' and press 'Always'.
Please let us know if this doesn't solve your problem.
    Thanks.
