MS Word -  OS 9 Classic?

Last week I downloaded a MS Office update. Now when my daughter signs on to Word it is looking for OS 9 ? The other 3 sign-ons on the computer boot Word normally in OS 10.4.11
How do I get it to revert back?

Hello Devin:
That is strange indeed.
I think I would uninstall Word and then reinstall it.

  • Multiple keystrokes in Word 5 in Classic

There was one other thread (now closed to replies) with a similar problem. I just upgraded a bunch of computers at a newspaper from 9 to Tiger, and we're kind of stuck using Word 5 for a few more weeks. However, some of the workstations find that Word 5 will give them multiple instances of a character (like a sticky key would). This only happens in Word, and not to all; I can't find a common theme. The OS9 system is a fresh install, as is the Tiger (both cloned from a master drive.) Systems are blue&white G3s and Sawtooth G4s, and maybe some iMac G3s.
I'd love to dump Word now but Quark 4 won't import RTF (without vast expenditure for an RTF XTension). We'll be using InDesign soon, which has no problems with RTF.
    Thanks
    --Colleen

Its the same for me too. Just upgraded and find Word 98 is really sticky and I get multiple key strokes unexpectedly.
    Anyone found a solution yet?
Does an upgrade to a later Word version help?
Can you buy Word for Mac as a standalone or does it always come with Office (at an exorbitant price)?
I am having EXACTLY the same problem on an iMac at
home, but with Word 98. I just upgraded to OS 10.4.4
from OS 9.2.2 and have not replaced my "classic"
applications. When I try to type in Word 98, I get
very frequent "sticky key" effects of repeated
letters. Every once in a while a space becomes a tab
instead of a space. Back-spacing goes wacky and
erases back over several letters. There seems to be
no rhyme or reason to this eccentric misbehavior.
Because much of what I do is write in Word, my
computer is now virtually unusable. Thinking of
trashing OSX and just going back to 9.2.2 (except,
of course, I can't get TurboTax for System 9 any
    more to do my taxes).
I have tried throwing out the various Word preference
files, but that doesn't help a bit.

  • Word file will not scroll to printer in classic

I'm using microsoft office 2001. When I want to print a word file (using classic envir.), it stops until printing is completed. (I have a Canon i550 ). When working off (OS 10.2.8) Appleworks, the file quickly scrolls to printer and I can go on to something new. It used to work the same for word - not sure what happened after I opened a newer word file sent to me. I tried turning background printing on - it appears to scroll, but never prints. I reinstalled Office 2001, didn't work either. It's a home computer, not networked to anything else. Since printing works fine with Appleworks and OS 10.2.8 - I think there's a small glitch somewhere. Any ideas?
    iMAC Mac OS X (10.2.x)

When you get messages from the Mac, you need to be sure what they mean, or post them here word-for-word, or both.
If you tried to set Extensions Manager to Mac OS (Base) and it complained, then either something is missing of your Mac, or someone has reconfigured it… either way, that needs to be sorted before looking at optional third-party installations, yes?
If it just seems to involve the Classic system that's probably good - anything that affected both Classic and X would probably indicate a faulty printer.
When you still get the same error message (M501) when you reistalled Office, which message was that, word for word, please?
If this was my Mac I'd be ignoring Office - the printer doesn't need Office to test or to work normally, and if only Office and no other apps are having print problems, that's 99% certain an Office, not a printer problem.
If your Mac won't let you set Extensions Manager to Mac OS (Base) then you need to use the Clean System Option in your latest OS 9 install disk to make a fresh System Folder and work from that.
The the Clean System Installation Option will give you a new working System Folder and the current one will be preserved alongside it, denatured and renamed as Previous System Folder but otherwise unchanged, so you can always go back to it.
Before trying the Clean System Installation Option you should physically disconnect everything except screen and (Apple) keyboard and mouse then Restart the Mac.
Make the Clean System Installation, launch that as Classic and install the printer precisely according to the maker's instructions.
If it doesn't work on that Clean System, it probably isn't going to, which will indicate either that it's faulty and needs replacing, or it simply isn't compatible with Classic.

  • Word 98

how do i make word 98 in classic be the default app to open other word docs. without having to always choose open with in menu?

Microsoft Word running in Mac OS X will automatically name all the Word files it saves with a ".doc" extension at the end of the file name. Your Finder preferences may or may not be showing you all the file extensions. Microsoft Word 98 will NOT be naming files automatically with the ".doc" at the end of the file name. Mac OS X requires this file extension to open the file correctly. Are you certain all the files you're having with are named correctly with the ".doc" at the end of the name? My guess is that the ones that are not opening automatically don't have the correct file name. You may have a preference you can change in Word 98 to automatically add the file extension to the name of all your files.

  • Problem with embedded links in Word 2001

    Hi,
I have searched many forums but can't find any answers to this. I hope you can help me.
I work with image files and text, and have made links from within Word files to the .jpg files I need. This was very easy to do in my old PowerMac G4 running OS 9.2.
Although I now work normaly in OS X, I still need to work in those Word 2001 files in Classic because I use a special font and some of the characters don't display correctly in OS X.
When I moved the files from the old computer to the new Powerbook, I assumed all links would be broken and would have to be edited but, to my surprise, all the links worked just fine when I run Word 2001 in Classic (the links' paths are still the old ones, from the old computer, but they work nevertheless) - I wonder how...
They don't work in Word 2004 but I never expected them to.
The problem is trying to edit or create hyperlinks now, in Word 2001.
If I change or create a link, it works just fine just as long as I don't quit Word.
When I relaunch Word 2001 and reopen the file, as soon as I point the cursor to the link, Word quits. I've done it enough times in a row for Classic to quit as well.
Is there a way to make links work in Word 2001?
    Thanks.

I know that all fullscreen videos are flexible to both orientation. What´s happens here is before show your vertical layout the viewer shows the vertical video. You need to try in custom app...Produce  an IPA file and test it.
    Maybe be a bug...

  • Microsoft word quits

Anyone know why when I highlight text and select copy in word 98 in classic, it quits?

    sorry, no
There is a whole apple forum dedicated to the problems in classic environment under OS X. This is where I would ask first.

  • Laserwriter 8500 works on OS9 but not OSX

I have a laserwriter 8500 problem. I just bought a new G5 dual and I have the 8500 pluged in through a router. I can print 'only' using microsoft word that is running on classic. whenever i try to print with any other applications that either run on classic or native on OSX I get an out of paper error. The 8500 shows the yellow out of paper light even though the laserwriter has paper. I can go to my G4 that is on the same network and print to the same printer without the 'out of paper' error.
So bottom line is, for some reason running OSX, the ONLY way I can get the 8500 to print and not give the out of paper warning is to be priniting out of only one application, MS Word reunning on classic.
What gives? Obviously it is not the printer, as I can print in one application running classic, and I can print from another (G4) mac on the same network... What is really odd is that the printer shows lights indicating it is out of paper, and it does not change the green (OK) light to yellow until after I request printing on OSX in any application other that MSWord running on classic.
I would really appreciate so help

This printer must have one port of every description! Which of the many methods of cabling are you using to talk to this printer? Are you plugging and unplugging, or is the same cabling set-up used in each case?

  • Why is stationery so kludgy?

I am not much of a geek and do not necessarily have all the know how that I need to make things work all the time: and the stationery features in Mail are stressing me out!
I have made some stationery and have it saved in the stationery folders and am able to use it when I start a new message, but when I am responding I am not able to attach my stationery to the top of the email. And when I use the stationery feature the formatting of the text is all over the place.
I want my emails to look professional and have a nice little banner/thingy at the top and (ideally) a nice little thing at the bottom, too. But it shows up differently on lots of different machines. SO I made an image in illustrator, figuring that would solve the font problem, and made that the top of the stationery, but it takes FOREVER to appear when I click on it in the "favourites" menu (and it is not big, the image is a small .jpg file) and, again, I can ONLY add that onto a new message.
What am i doing wrong? I read about adding lines of code and html stuff but that is just out of my area. There only seems to be one thread about this on this forum and there's no solution listed there. Anyone have any ideas?
    thanks
    kt

I wouldn't have installed Tiger but I couldn't get some of the things from the Internet that were available with a new browser and a speedier connection. So, I installed Tiger and DSL. Now, I still have all the old documents and I want to be able to access them and use them as I had previously without have to shut down and restart the computer from OSX to OS 9.2.2. I don't have many problems using Word with the Classic that I haven't overcome, but some of the larger Excel documents that worked well in OS 9.2.2 are unstable with Classic. I also have Claris that I use for database. That is unstable with the Classic also, but works well with OS 9.2.2

  • Issues printing

I am using a Mac with OSX 10.4.11 with Office 2004. For some reason whenever I try and print 1/2 in a Word document, or even sometimes do random pages get corrupted when printing in Mac OSX. For example I'll print the document below, and the first page will print out very large and in a weird strange character, but the second page will print out just fine.
I tried copy and pasting the first page to text Edit and AppleWorks and still the same problem, so I am forced to open Word 98 in Classic mode and print from there, and the file prints fine.
    Any tips?
    Thanks..
    John
    The file.
1st page will print in strange characters on the printer and tghe second page will work fine. This happens even after I copy and paste the file into TextEdit or AppleWorks. The only solution is to print in Classic Mode.

    3. There is no distinction between Jews and Gentiles (Eph 3:4-10)

    1. Episcopalian
    2. Presbyterian
    3. Congregationalist
    A. Single Elder

    C. Baptism is a Token of Salvation
    2. The Lord’s Supper

    2. The types of Spiritual gifts are working in miracles, healing, helpers, administration, and faith.
    Doctrinal Statement
I believe that Christ has full ownership of the Church as here on earth according to Eph 1:22-23. I believe that the church was built upon the foundation the apostles set (Eph 2:19-22). I believe that the church is one body (Rom 12, 1 Cor 12) and that each member has a different function in the church. I also believe that the church and Israel are distinct. I do not believe in a spiritual Israel. I believe in a number of differing interpretations and practices on the government of the church. I personally believe that the congregational form of government is the most Biblical of all. But this is not to say that the other philosophies are completely unbiblical. I also believe that the follower of Christ needs be baptized which indicates that he is born again and has been washed from his sins. I do not believe that Baptism saves the Christian.
➢ I reject Baptismal Regeneration as taught by OneNess Pentecostals, Catholics and other groups.
➢ I rejected the Reformed view of Baptism being a Sign and Seal of the Covenant
➢ I believe that Baptism is by immersion only. I do not believe in sprinkling nor any other form for Baptism other than by immersion.
The Lord’s Supper was established by Christ and told in all three synoptic gospels and also in 1 Cor 11. I believe that the Lord’s Supper needs to be practiced by anyone professing to be a Christian as this is a form of a proclamation to the Lord and his death and resurrection. I believe the best way to practice the Lord’s supper would be in communion as mentioned in 1 Cor 10. I believe that the Lord’s Supper should be remembered once a month in the local church.
Spiritual Gifts are given to all believers. I believe that the spiritual gifts were meant for the believer to perform his or her services to the church and to the body of Christ. There are four passages in the NT that speak of the spiritual gifts and they are Rom 12:6-8, 1 Cor 12:4-11, 28-30, and Eph 4:7-12.
➢ I am a cessationist and believe that the apostolic sign gifts have ceased and are no longer in practice. Speaking in Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues, the working of miracles, the gift of healing, Apostleship, and Prophecy I believe are the most obvious of the sign gifts that ceased.
➢ I reject much of the Charismatic movement and believe that many so called “miracle workers” in that movement are frauds, and do not have the spiritual gift of healing that ceased in the 1st century with the closing of the Canon.
Separation I believe needs to be practiced by Christians serious about the Bible. There are three types of separation and they are from the world, from false teachers and from disobedient Christians. 1 John 2:15-17 teaches separation from the world, Gal 1:8-9 teaches separation from false teachers, and 2 Thes 3:14-15 teaches separation from disobedient Christians. Many New Evangelicals, Charismatics and such I believe are in disobedience to the scriptures so I therefore believe that separating from them in some areas is acting in accordance with the scriptures.

  • Printing #10 Envelope - Return Address "off the page" & Address Very High

    I'm having trouble printing a #10 envelope.
I have an Okidata B410d printer that Pages seems to subtitle a "Generic PCL Laser Printer."
I went -- File / Open From Template Chooser / Word Processing / Envelopes / Classic Envelope
I fill in the fields and the page attributes shows my printer, #10 Envelope and a landscape orientation.
But when I feed through the bypass tray -- following the little icons telling me face down, flap left, ... -- the result prints the address two lines from the top of the paper and no sign of the return address field (if it existed it would be an inch off the paper to the top if you follow.
So I figure there might be some way to change the setup / margins / headers / ...
I managed to get something sorta acceptable by changing the default header from 0.95 cm to 4.2 cm -- it wouldn't let me go any more. The result had the return field hugging the top of the paper and the main address starting maybe 1 1/2" from the top. the envelope looks funny by I had to get something in the mail today.
Now I'd like to make this right.
    Any advice?
    Thanks

Who knows what I've done but after much trial and error (and more than a few of those pages cut to match a #10 envelope I seem to have something I can work with.
I guess, as you said, there is some funny business between my printer and Pages.
I'll detail the steps as much so I can retrieve if necessary. What I did:
    * Found a template that used a floating text box for the return rather than a header.
    * Changed the page size from the #10 default of 24.13 cm wide x 10.48 cm high to 24.13 cm wide x 24.0 cm high to "fool" it to working.
    * Left side margins unchanged
    * Set top margin to 11.5 cm and bottom to 0.0 cm
    * Dragged the return address floating text box so it is centred top to bottom on the envelope (a look I like)
    * Finished output has return address flush left, centred top to bottom and the address filed aligned with top line of address and return address fileds the same.
    * Saved as a template in my templates.
    * Tested that I could retrieve the template, type in info and print okay.
Like I said ... it ain't elegant but now I can print out a proper looking #10 through the bypass feed of my Oki printer.
    Thanks for your help.

  • G4 hangs when opening or saving Word 2001 files in Classic mode.

Hello, everyone.  I have a G4 400 MHz AGP Graphics ("Sawtooth") model with Microsoft Word 2001 that runs in Classic mode.  Recently, when I have tried to open files, the symbol that looks like a tiny clock face with a spinning hand appears, but nothing else happens.  This occurs before a dialog window appears prompting for the selection of a file from a particular folder.  I can create a new file and type text, but when I try to save the file, the tiny clock face also appears, but nothing else.  This also occurs before a dialog window appears prompting for the name of a file and for the selection of a folder in which to save.  I can successfully open files in Microsoft Excel 2001 in Classic mode.  I did not test PowerPoint 2001.
I'm wondering if the default folder where Word 2001 is trying to open and save files has so many files in it that this G4 isn't able to handle the resultant load.  Has anyone encountered something similar?
Also, I'm wondering if I should try to reinstall Word 2001.  Does anyone have any ideas in that regard?
    Thank you.
    -John

    Hi John,
Have you tried changing the save location in Word's Preferences?
    Might look into NeoOffice...
    http://www.neooffice.org/
    Or Open Office...
    http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/index.html
I think they both have older 10.4 versions that can handle Word & Excel docs.

  • Word 2004 tries to open as a Classic application

Suddenly, without warning, in only one of the two user accounts on my iBook, Word has identified itself when I open its information panel, as 'Application (Classic)', explaining why it stimulates OS 9 to start up when Word is asked to open. But when OS 9 opens, it then tells me that Word 2004 requires OS X. This is not news to anyone, but indicates that, at least, Word 2004 hasn't changed into Word 98.
So Word 2004 can't open under my wife's user account, a nuisance as she rightly expects to be able to use it. All .doc documents in her folders have switched allegiance to Appleworks and won't allow their preferred application to be Word 2004, reverting to Appleworks immediately on an attempt to change it to Word from the document's Information window.
When I switch account to my own on the same iBook, there is no problem. Word opens seamlessly and all .docs work as usual.
So I believe the problem is one within the operating system rather than with Word itself.
I have repaired disk permissions using Disk Utility, which repaired some iTunes permissions but nothing to do with MS Office. I have restarted, logged out, emptied caches, to no avail.
Last year an almost identical question was asked, but had no sensible answer as far as I could see.
    Does anyone have a solution?
iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   One of the final iBooks to walk out of the Apple store

The document opens with Appleworks, and the selection of Word in 'Get Info' reverts to Appleworks, and Word disappears as an alternative application in 'Get Info'.
Before the document opens, an 'OK' button box appears asking whether Microsoft Word documents should be opened with Microsoft Word. Hitting 'OK' makes no difference.
In Get Info MS Word is labelled 'Application (Classic)' instead of 'Application (Power PC) as it does when in the other user account on the same computer.
