MS Word saving

Has anyone noticed with Snow Leopard that it's very, very clunky about saving documents?? I try to save something in MS Word, and I have to get out of Word, go to my documents folder in finder, then create folders that I want, go back to word and save my document in documents, go back to finder and open the documents folder and move my document to the folder.
Is Mac becoming even more crazy with each OS?? I find the most basic tasks of word processing to be clunky and time consuming. I know Apple hates MS, but why promise the best of both worlds when you can't even save a document?
Please, someone tell me I'm missing something and there is an easy way to save documents, create folders, and save to those folders in MS Word!
Also, I know Apple isn't open to feedback very readily, but is there a way to leave feedback on the site so that other users who are purchasing know how much extra work they'll go to for basic functions?
I love my 3rd Mac, but Apple's downward trend is going to kill them.

It sure sounds to me like your dialogs got reset to Basic mode when you upgraded to Snow Leopard, and you have not yet expanded it. Because if you had expanded your Save As dialog, you would see all of the options. When the dialog is collapsed, you only see Save As, Where (defaulting to Documents), and File Format. As someone already mentioned, try clicking the arrow to the right of Save As to expand the dialog.
If this is the problem, then all your other complaints about "becoming more crazy" and "very very clunky" would no longer apply. Snow Leopard is a quite good OS in fact.
Personally I find the collapsed default annoying, so I used TinkerTool to set "Prefer expanded Save dialogs when using new applications" and the same preference for the Print dialog. Many users get confused about the "lack" of options in their unexpanded Print dialogs too.

  • How to respond to Word saving a document?

    Hi,
    We want to be able to edit .docx files with our application. We do this by writing them to disc and opening them with Word via ActiveX calls. As soon as the document is changed and saved in Word, we want to write it back to our application. What would be
    the best way to achieve this? There is a DocumentBeforeSave event but not a DocumentAfterSave event.
    Thank you very much for your help.

  • Word Saving in AppData

    One of my users is having trouble saving word documents. We use folder redirection. When selecting save as, it shows Documents (\\SERVER\Users\username), but selecting that takes her to C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts instead of the documents folder. I'm not sure if it's also happening if she selects Save as well. Either way, it's showing the current folder as the correct Documents location, but is saving in AppData. I had her select browse and select documents that way, but I don't see why it would be saving in AppData.

    First thought: don't use iWork. It does not satisfy your needs.
    There are plenty of other options for you: NeoOffice, OpenOffice, TextEdit, Jedit X... all save to .doc format instead of forcing you through export options.
    Their level of compatibility with the .doc format varies of course. I would not use TextEdit to produce any .doc-formatted CV. NeoOffice and OpenOffice should be fine though. MS Office is another alternative one should not forget.

  • Microsoft Word saving documents as .docx

    I'm not sure if this is the right place to be posting the question- if there is a different forum that it belongs in please let me know!
    I downloaded Microsoft Office for Home & Student 2008, and now it is saving my documents as .docx. As a result, emailing Word attachments has proven itself troublesome as the recipients cannot open the files. I have tried altering the .docx to .doc, but it doesn't make any difference. Somewhere along the line the compatibility is being destroyed- I don't know what to do, or even where to start looking.
    Please help!

  • Word saving documents as binary files- can't send documents as attachments

    I've had my Macbook for about 9 months. During the first 6 months, I could send attachments via email perfectly fine. After about 6 months, something happened and the files could no longer be opened after being attached. I tried sending some attachments to myself and found out that the documents were being sent as binary files.
    I also backed up my documents onto an external hard drive. When I opened the documents on a Windows computer, the Word documents that I created during the first 6 months could be opened. However, the most recently created documents couldn't be opened by my computer.
    I decided to do an erase and install on Saturday. Afterwards, Word was working fine and I was able to send documents as attachments. This morning (Tuesday) I tried to send attachments again and it didn't work! Again, the documents were binary files.
    I'm not sure what to do because it was working fine for three days, but now it's not working anymore. I think something must have happened during those three days that corrupted my computer?
    Has anyone had a similar problem? Can anyone help?
    Sorry I know it was a long post but I wanted to give more information in case it would give some clues. I feel I should add that I've been having quite a few problems with my Macbook, e.g. screen freezing, DMGs not loading properly, getting some pop ups

    Also wanted to add that I've had my logicboard replaced recently because of problems such as freezing, so I don't think it should be a hardware problem.

    Since Word is not an Apple product, you'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=33607053> rather than an Apple forum that focuses on compatibility between Macs and Windows.
    Be sure to search the forum first in case someone has already had a similar question answered. You'll get your answer faster this way. Post your question in the forum if you don't find anything that helps you

  • Save a filled-out form to Word - saved as blank

    I purchased ExportPDF so that I could save a filled-out form to Word. I needed to do this because, though the form has fields that allow seemingly infinite text to be inserted, the text is not visible when printed.  The document must be submitted by US Mail.  When I converted the completed document to Word, it erased ALL of the text I added and unchecked all boxes.  If this is all it can do, I need to unsubscribe and get a refund.  That is totally worthless to me.

    Hi,
    Did you try with different file? If so, are the results the same?
    Would you send your document as an email attachment?
    I will check it from my end.Please add the link to this forum post for reference.
    I have sent you my contact details on your email id.

  • MS Word saving a document to a specific directory

    I have a very simple example:
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
    activate
    open ":mypath:myfile.doc"
    save as active document file name "test.pdf" file format format PDF
    close active document
    end tell
    This saves the contents of myfile.doc in pdf format in a file called test.pdf. But it places this in ~/Documents.
    I dont seem to be able to specify an alternative path in the file name argument. Either it ignores the path if I use something like:
    "foo:test.doc"
    or it explodes with an error for something like:
    ":foo:test.doc" where :foo is /foo.
    I assume there is perhaps some kind of property.
    Is there a more efficient way to learn MS Word and applescript? I know its not an apple product (dohhh). If this was windows and vbscript they allow you to record a macro and effectively it gives you the code.
    error "Microsoft Word got an error: active document doesn’t understand the save as message." number -1708 from active document

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    To save in a different location to the default you need to provide a full path to the new location:
    You could say ((path to desktop) as string) & "test.xxx" OR
    "Macintosh HD:Users:yourusername:Desktop:text.xxx"
    Note that if the file already exists, it will be overwritten without alerting you.
    I am using Office 2004, which does not allow save as PDF. You might need to verify that this format is available in the version you are using. So, using RTF as the format, this works:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFDDFF;
    overflow: auto;">
    tell application "Microsoft Word"
    open (((path to documents folder) as string) & "Original Document.doc") as alias
    save as active document file name (((path to desktop) as string) & "New Document.rtf") file format format rtf
    close active document
    end tell </pre>
    To address your question about learning AS for Word, I assume you know that you can open the application's dictionary in Script Editor? (Descriptions can be somewhat obtuse, however.)

  • Microsoft Word saving error - student & teacher edition

    On my Macbook Pro whenever I use MS Word it started giving an error message saying:
    the disk is full trying to write "macintosh HD". Free some space on this drive, or save the document on another disk
    I have +/- 50 gb available hard disk space and the document I try to save usually has 8 or 10 pages long. I tried to save it on a flash drive it did not work as well; Word gave the same error message once again.
    I contacted MS by phone yet did not get a solution for this problem. My case is still open since when I hung up the phone I was advised to call back if it happens again. Sure enough the same error message appeared several hours after I talked to MS help line. Now I am not sure whether I will get a problem solving answer for this.
    I posted this message to MBP discussion list, but the solution I got did not work which was using normal mode in Word when working on a document. Since then I have not received any reply to my post.
    Last note: The only different things in the .doc files is the microsoft equation symbols which is not a third party addition. Other than that the documents are not large files nor contains graphs, charts, unusual formats, pictures etc.
    Any idea on how can it be fixed?
    15" MBP 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Take a look at this note copied from the link you mentioned:
    Note: As stated above, this error occurs less frequently in Word 2004. Microsoft raised the limit on open files in Word 2004, and put in a work-around that automatically senses the problem and offers to clear the Undo Stack for you. So it is rare that you will see the problem in Word 2004, and if you do, the fixes described here won't work.
    In Word 2004, it is far more likely that the disk (or folder you are trying to write to) actually is full, or that you really do have too many files open!
    in my case, with MS Office 2004 student and teacher edition, HD is not full and I don't have too many open files, I usually have only one open.

  • Can't put a site back on to, Options, security, saved passwords.

    I'm using; Firefox version 3.6.22 with Windows 7 on a Dell Studio 17 inch laptop.
    On the; Tools, Options, security section, saved passwords.
    I did have my login for www.walmart.com , in it. It worked fine & loaded &/or signed me in every time. Till today. The walmart.com site is gone from the saved list and even though the "Remember Passwords for sites" is working - it asked if I wanted to save the login info when I just registered to ask for help with this - it did not ask, "do I want to save the sign in, or login, password for this site" when I just had signed into the walmart.com because it didn't do it automatically like usual. Also the walmart.com isn't on the exception list either. But when I login on the site it doesn't ask if I want to save it, and I cant find a way to add it back to the list of sites.
    The troubleshooting help for adding a site to the saved passwords list that had been blocked, or "do not ask again" checked, said to check the exceptions list and delete it from there. But the one I want back on the saved list is NOT on the exceptions list.
    How can I get this reset, fixed, or what ever, without loosing ALL of my other saved sites UN & PW?
    I used to have all my User Names and Pass Words saved with the NORTON security program. But now I cant access them because my NORTON expired. After loosing all of those I don't need to loose these too.

  • My imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick

    my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!

    thanks for your response Csound1 on the peninsula ... if i go ahead and install maverick and then download LibreOffice or OpenOffice will i then be able to access old microsoft word saved documents on my deskstop through those two free alternatives? i am not that knowledgeable about these things so i am not sure if you are saying i will just be able to use libreoffice or openoffice for creating new documents or whether i can access the saved microsoft docs? are they transferred to OO or LO or what and if editing of the old word docs is needed can i do that through the OO and LO programs or apps (see i am not even sure if i am using the correct vocabulary!) hope you can answer this as quick as the first question, so i can decide to stick with mountain lion and trash the maverick install or proceed with maverick install and hoppe that my microsoft word docs are still accessible through OO or LO or adding to myquestion will pages on maverick be able to open the old word documents? thanks again!

  • Saving RTF from JTextPane and missing subscripts

    I've written a little application that involves saving and loading styled text in a JTextPane. Bold and italic styled text survives the loading/saving process but subscripts always revert to the regular style.
    To test this further, I created a document with bold, italic and subscript styled text in MS Word, saved it as RTF and then loaded it into my JTextPane. I got the same result as above: my subscripts were lost, but bold and italic survived.
    Is this a bug? If so any news of it being known or fixed?
    thanks,
    McN

    Swing's RTFEditorKit only supports an early release of the RTF specification -- maybe somewhere along 1.1. Microsoft has updated the spec with each new version of Word, so that I think the XP version is something around 1.6 or 1.7. The most common behavior of the current Swing RTFEditorKit is to ignore those extra features it doesn't recognize, like subscripts, tables, images, etc. I have occasionally had it produce a null value as well...giving me fits.

  • Captured photos are not being saved - occasionally...

    Hi,
    I own a month-old Lumia 830.
    It took me a while before finding out that many of my photos that I took on many occasions are not saving, even though the screen is showing the word 'saving'.
    I usually do not necessarily preview the photos each time I snap a few; it's not until I attempt to preview after few days. Therefore, that is why I did not know I actually have been having an issue with this phone's camera. I am using the original microSD that came included inside this phone. By the way, sometimes after snapping a photo or try previewing it right after it, the phone takes out of the camera mode, and back to the Home screen.
    Anyone else is having the same issue or knowing what to do?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Here is my feedback so far.
    The soft resetting did not exhibit any effect at all, including whether or not I selected the option to save on SD or Phone either.
    What I found interesting, there are actually two camera applications in this phone. 1. that is the one included by default in the Home page, which starts also when one physically presses the side camera button, it is labeled 'Nokia Camera';  2. is another camera interface I have discovered when I was scrolling through the listing of application titles already installed by default on this phone, which it is called 'Camera' .
    Each one seemingly execute a different GUI - mid you, I am not sure why would Nokia includes (2) camera applications - maybe a contingency plan for individuals like me!
    So I ran the 'Camera' application, which is different from the 'Nokia Camera', I was able to snap dozens of photos without a glitch, all were saved on the SD. But then when I reverted back to 'Nokia Camera', I was able to snap up to 4 photos only (some of which I was only able to retrieve/preview not without first navigating to 'Nokia Camera>Settings> clicking on 'Find photos and videos shot with Nokia Camera', while the fifth kept on showing 'savig.....' endlessly, without ever being saved or found. I have tried the same scenario dozens of times - same result. The only way I was able to get out of this screen was by pressing the back button.Yet when I went back using the 'other' Camera only application, there was no problem taking 10-20 photos. They were all saved on the SD/Phone regardless.
    This morning I tried both applications again, but for some odd reason, I was able to snap a dozen photos using both applications without any issue.
    I am puzzled - both versions are working fine (for now) - but who knows for how long.
    Thanks everyone for your insights!

  • File I downloaded then saved is now gone.

    I downloaded a word document yesterday. When I was prompted to save it or open it, I chose to just open it. I then made some changes to the word document, and clicked "save". Today I was looking for the word document, but couldn't find it. When I open Firefox's download menu, the option to open it or open its containing folder is grayed out.
    What I'm very confused by is the fact that when I clicked "save" in MS Word yesterday when I finished editing the document, MS Word saved the file. Normally, when I "open" a word document directly from Firefox (as opposed to saving it to a specified location), if I edit the document and then click "save", MS Word will direct me to the "Save As" menu where I choose a folder to save the document in. This time, MS Word saved the file as if it were a file I had downloaded. So I had no idea that the file was not in a secure location (probably was in a temporary download folder).
    The changes I made to the document were extremely important and I'm very very disappointed that I've lost the file. Is there anywhere it could be? How can I prevent this from happening in the future (other than saving the file directly from Firefox)?
    Thanks

    When you choose "Open" in a download prompt window, the file ends up in the temp folder. Once Firefox is closed, the file is deleted. The "Open Containing Folder" option is grayed out because the file no longer exists. You can verify that it's gone by trying to open it from Word's list of recently opened files.
    You can try an undelete utility to recover the file.
    * http://www.piriform.com/recuva
    In the future, if you want to keep a file, either choose to save it when prompted by Firefox, or choose either Save As or Save Copy As after you've opened it in the associated application.
