MS Word virus
I seem to have a MS Word virus in my computer, and I don't have any antivirus software. I don't think it's going to do damage to me (or might it do damage to my Word files?) but I don't want to spread viruses to other people.
MS has instructions on their website for dealing with Word viruses, but they are less than helpful: there is one link to a long list of antivirus software makers, which is probably all non-Mac; then there is a link to an article on a method for removing individual viruses; but the link is not working.
I would like to know how to manually remove one of these viruses, and I'm not too keen on spending much money for this one virus problem that may never recur.
Any advice, please?

Hi Paul,
Well you could try using ClamAV to get rid of it.

My server is comcast.net. when i send attachments in word via email they appear in my sent folder but never arrive at their destination. I have been told that i possibly have a virus and comcast is blocking my word attachments. i can send rtf or ppt and they work fine. i currently do not have an antivirus program and am wary of installing one. please help with a fix!! thanks!
It could be that the recipient's email client will not allow any word attachments to be opened. That's the default setting for some windows email clients.
You can safely install and use ClamXAV. It's a free Mac antivirus app. Since it's free, you won't get a guarantee that it will work or even that it won't damage your Mac. On the other hand, it's been extensively tested and used by lots of folks. You can search through discussions or Google it (and you should if you've never heard of it before) to make sure it's safe to use. I use it, and lots of folks that post here do as well. but like I said, you should research anything before you install it.

Hello, I recently bought a powerbook, and I wanted to transfer all of my MS Word documents to my mac from a PC. Then, however, I read the the majority of viruses out there attach themselves to MS Word documents to get on your PC. Is it safe for me to transfer my files? Thanks!
There may be an issue of definition here....
No. Some (not all, but some) MS Office macro viruses can affect Macs. Period.
what is
a virus, what is a trojan, and what is malware?
Let's just say that any machine and/or operating
system is vulnerable if the user runs a malicious
program.
Microsoft Word is, I believe, configured to tell you
if the document you are opening contains macros.
If you have the correct settings, yes, it's supposed to do that. However, there are certain macro viruses which were written with knowledge of how MS's macro-blocker works, and circumvent this setting. Some of those macro viruses (not all) can affect Macs. (See <http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/bulletins/i-023.shtml>; note that this page was written in 1998, and that since then additional stealth macro viruses have been uncovered.)
If
you choose to ignore the warning you are effectively
giving the macro permission to run.
All the various protections such as anti-virus
software and operating system restrictions do their
best to prevent the user unintentionally
running malicious code.
There are very few new macro viruses produced nowadays. However, there are still a lot of old macro viruses floating around, some of them stealthed, some not. For a long time the virus I saw most often was this one: <http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_10132.htm>. I got really sick of fixing people's systems, both Mac and Windows, after they got hit by it. -
i seem to have a virus with word for mac. does anyone have a recommendation as to an anti-virus program
ClamXAV will locate the infected Word files, but it won't clean them.
Note that with Word viruses, you may have to delete your current normal.dot template (in Documents/Microsoft User Data), relaunch Word to recreate a new one; then lock it (highlight, click cmd+i, and click Locked) to prevent further infection.

Hello,
I caught the "Happy Birthdaay virus" today, and all my Word files seem to be infected with it. I downloaded ClamXAV already and am wondering now if I have to get rid of all those infected files. Is there any other solution?? All this makes me pretty nervous... Thank you for your help.
SebastienYou should check the Microsoft site. Word is their product and they may be able to help you better. This is a word virus so it comes into word piggyback on a document. One good thing is all it affects on your Mac is word documents. This is the McAfee search on this virus.

Macro virus
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this Macro Virus from my word documents? Every document that I have created for the last year or more has them. Including every copy of my book! Problem is that I didn't know it was a problem when I kept seeing the warning. I guess an important question is, "is a MACRO a VIRUS?" Or are macros normal but sometimes people use them to embed the virus? I'm not sure. Before I assumed the later. But now I'm thinking that a macro is a virus. Will someone clear this up? More importantly, will someone tell me a good program that well remove them please. Oh and the program has to work with 10.4. I'm not putting any of this stuff on my 10.6 machine.Word Virus on Mac – W97M.Thus.gen-2...

1. I just opened up Word (and a new, blank document if it doesn’t open automatically).
2. The go to “Tools -> Macros -> Visual Basic Editor”
3. On the Left is a box called “Projects”. The default selection is the blank document that you have open. Above that will be a cascading menu that will say “Normal”. (See the picture)
4. Once you click on “ThisDocument” a bunch of code will show up in the main window. Just select it all (Apple+A) and then delete it. All of it. Don’t spare a single character.
5. Save the changes (Apple+S, or select “Save Normal” under the File Menu)
6. Quit the editor (Apple+Q, or “Close and Return to Microsoft Word” under the Word Menu)
7. Close Word.
That is it! You are all done!!

Mac Terminal: computer name replaced with "virus"
Hi, I'm having an issue where, in my Mac terminal, the space where the computer name is shown is instead replaced with the word "virus".
virus:~<username>$
Additionally, my internet connection either works terribly or not at all, and this only seems to happen at night. I have no idea what's going on, but maybe somebody can shed some light on this? The most plausible explanation is that someone with access to your computer is messing with you. There's a number of ways of changing the computer's name shown at the command prompt (at least one doesn't involve touching your computer at all):
1. If your computer is given a name by the DHCP server (your Internet gateway, or whatever you are using), an individual can modify the name that the DHCP service gives your computer and your computer will simply adopt that name when receives its IP address assignment. (Doesn't require access to your computer.)
2. If your computer didn't get assigned a host name by DHCP, then the system will do a reverse DNS lookup on the IP address it gets. If the DNS server (or /etc/hosts) returns 'virus' as the host name for that IP address, then your system will use that name. (Doesn't require access to your computer.)
3. If neither of the first two things happened, the system will use the name you set in the Sharing pane of System Preferences. (Someone can set this by simply walking up to your computer and setting it, or by logging in with an admin account and editing /Library/Preference/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist).
4. Someone could also edit the default prompt used by bash. The environment variable PS1 contains the prompt template string, the default being PS1='\h:\W \u\$ ' -- the '\h' means host name. You can do
'echo $PS1' to see if it's set this way. PS1 can be set in /etc/profile, /etc/bashrc, ~/.profile, and ~/.bashrc
There's a couple of other possibilities if you are integrating with Active Directory or Open Directory -
Virus protection & firewall for new iMac
I'm making the change from PC to Mac.
I keep reading about how the Mac is far less vunerable than the PC to virus attacks and other security scams - do I need to purchase any additional software or am I secure enough with what comes shipped on the iMac itself?
I currently use Norton Internet Security and like the security it gives with its parental controls, credit card number protection and the like. Does the Apple software have similar features?
Any advice appreciated. This question has been asked about 10000 times out here!! If you use the search feature and enter the word "virus" you will get more threads to read than you can stand.
I don't run anti virus software and never have but that does not mean that one should not be prepared. It will happen one day, its only a matter of when.
Spyware exists mainly in the realm of P2P programs like Limewire.
The firewall built in to the Mac OS is as good as any commercial product available. Just make sure to turn it on as it is not turned on by default. You turn it on in the Sharing preference pane under the firewall tab.
There is some pretty comprehensive information on this subject available here:

Microsoft Word Crashes - won't run at all
I know I should post this on some Word:Mac forum but I trust the knowledgebase here more!
Word 2004 on an Intel MacBook running 10.5.8 crashes every time.
I've deleted all Word preference files, identities, etc....didn't fix it.
I've validated all fonts and deleted all fonts with any errors....didn't fix it.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times.....didn't fix it.
I've run virus checking software and found files with Word viruses and cleaned them....didn't fix it.
Help.On another thread, someone with the same problem believed it was a corrupt dictionary. I turned off spelling and grammar checking and it has stopped crashing, but this is not an ideal solution.
The dictionary is tied to the user, because other users on the same computer aren't having the problem, but I don't know where Microsoft has hidden the dictionaries, or how to delete them. -
Cannot uninstall virus protection-- Invisible files?
My early 2008 MacBook Pro (10.6.8) has been running slow so I wanted to do a full virus scan. I see too many beach balls, scrolling pauses, and briefly my mouse buttons were misbehaving. It has 53 GB free on a */- 250 GB HD. Initially I had partitioned it, but ran out of space so I removed the second partition and now have just one big one.
I did a search for Sophos Antivirus, which has been on this machine since 2008 when I was staff/student. The search produced folders and files and then the search hung, so I quit it and restarted the machine, which generally is on all the time. I probably restart once a week to get rid of temporary files.
After this last restart, EVERY reference to Sophos has disappeared. No installer, no uninstaller, no virus definitions. I tried to run the Sophos home edition installer and it says there is antivirus software on the HD. I followed their directions, attempting to remove first Sophos 8 and then Sophos 9, and both return the message that there is no Sophos installed. But when I try to install the home edition, it says there already is virus protection installed. I had installed Clam, ran it with no errors or indication of a problem yesterday. Clam says to trash it in order to delete it, so I did. I haven't used any other antivirus besides Sophos and the more recent Clam. If there is virus protection, it must be invisible to me.
Since this MacBook is so old, I can't get help from Apple, and the Sophos directions indicate that I should download and run the uninstallers. So I'm stuck with a slow HD with no virus or malware protection. Disk Utility and TechTool (both run from the HD) indicate no problems.
The idea that the institutional version of the software uninstalled "by itself" baffles Sophos tech support as well as me.
Anybody have a directional idea? Thanks for considering this strange issue.I ran the report but don't see the word "virus" in anything. I could uninstall VMWare since I've removed the Windows partition. The Samsung links are for my tablet. Perhaps something leaps out at you patient folks? Thanks for pursuing this with me.

If my Mac ends up with a virus, can I use Time Machine to go back before the virus?
I have recently just bought a 2TB external hard drive and have just backed up using Time Machine. I was just wondering, if my Mac was to become infected with a virus, would I be able to use Time Machine to restore my machine to back before it became infected with the virus? (So I didn't have to do a full factory setting resortation)
Thank you in advance for any assistance with this query. My apologies. As a computer user since the days of Mainframes in 1970's, I tend to be rather precise in how I phrase things (a legacy of the old punch-card days). Also I write medico-legal reports for a living, again a field where precision is rather essential!
I saometimes forget that just because I read and write the word 'virus' as meaning just that, others (as you say) are prone to use it as a blanket term for malware and other 'irritations'.
Thanks for your clarifications WZZZ. Hope winter in the Big Apple is treating you well. -
I have already disabled all ad-ons, one at a time (11 total) to see if any of them caused the error. None did. I have already checked all programs, including antivirus to see there was a timed action that was triggering the shut down. When it does shut down, I receive no error messages or warnings about muliti-tab shutdown. Every time, Firefox simply closes. When I re-open Firefox, I do not receive the option (which I have set) to restore my tabs. No other programs are affected. I am happy to provide any more information, just let me know what you need. The Troubleshooter data below is from 1.5 hours after the most recent Firefox shutdown.
I have '''exactly''' the same problem as you do, and it also happens in other browsers as well (I use Internet Explorer and Google Chrome too).
Most of the times, the restore previous session option is grayed out, but other times it automatically asks me if I want to restore the previous session. When I click 'Yes', it restores all the tabs of the previous session alongside a new one, open in the following site: http://krzemik.pl/
The site is Polish, but I don't even live in Poland.
The site says it's safe, but I'm suspicious it distributes some kind of adware that causes this problem. I've already reported it, though.
I also have another problem that, whenever I search for something that contains the word 'virus' on a search engine, the browser is automatically shut within 1 or 2 seconds without any kind of warning or error message, I also can't open one of my antispyware programs (AdAware, to be exact), as it is immediately closed as if I had clicked the 'X', per say, even in Safe Mode. I'm also prevented from using my backup restore function in the control panel, or even using commands to activate it. I've fully scanned my computer in Safe Mode using another antispyware (SuperAntispyware) twice, and nothing as solved the problem.
I'm not sure if these problems are interconnected, though. -
Adobe Reader 11.0.5 asks to save every file I open...
Every time I open a file just to look at it: When I exit, Adobe Reader asks if I want to save the file. This happens on every file I open, regardless of the source or type of PDF. It also happens when I open those files in Adobe Acrobat Pro, version 9. This has only started relatively recently. I didn't pay much attention at first, because I had other things on my mind, but now it is starting to concern me.
This reminds me of (way back in the day) when there were Word viruses going around which tried to install themselves in every Word document you opened.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this, or how I can get it to stop? This phenomenon can happen with PDF files that have errors in them. Adobe Reader or Acrobat may be able to fix these errors, but if you close the application, it will ask to save the corrected file. If you save it once, that should no longer occur when you open it again.
This is just one explanation, but it doesn't explain why that happens with every PDF you have.
Test: does it also happen with a PDF that is not supposed to contain any errors: http://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/adobe_reader_reference.pdf ? -
Compatibility problem copying between Microsoft Office, Clipboard, Internet
I would really appreciate your help figuring out a problem:
I have run Microsoft Office 2004 on my iBook G4 for the past 5 years. Just recently, whenever I attempt to copy anything from Word, it comes up in the clipboard and the destination in an email body (I use gmail) as 'Ministry of Interior' or 'Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000224 EndHTML:0000002914 StartFragment:0000002726 EndFragment:0000002878 SourceURL:file://localhost/Users/HalHinkle/Desktop/Est%20-%20christina%20black%2016b%20Ele ctric%20Ave%20SW9%208JR.doc Ministry of Interior' no matter what I do. I have tried clearing the clipboard several times, but that has not solved the problem.
This problem seems to be limited to copying outside of a Microsoft office programme to another application, like both my Firefox and Safari internet browsers. Interestingly, within a Microsoft Office programme (I have tried both Word and Excel) I can copy and paste fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks very much.Hi csblack86, and a warm welcome to the forums!

As to the problem, visiting a web page should never cause Safari to crash. If it does, something is wrong somewhere. A Band-Aid fix would be to hold down the shift key while opening Safari. This prevents Safari from trying to re-open the pages that were open when it quit (or crashed). That will prevent issues caused by loading a particular page automatically each time you try to re-open Safari.
However, you still need to get to the bottom of what is making Safari crash. One possibility is that you've got some bad Safari extension installed. Go to Safari's preferences window and click the Extensions icon. What is listed there? Try disabling everything listed and see if the problems continue.
You can also try resetting Safari, by choosing Reset Safari from the Safari menu. This will clear a lot of things, including auto-fill data, so be sure you won't be losing anything vital. (Hopefully, you're not keeping passwords that you don't remember stored as auto-fill data!)
The one other thing that could help that is not handled by resetting Safari would be clearing Safari's caches. To do that, go to the Advanced pane in Safari's preferences window and check the box at the bottom reading "Show Develop menu in menu bar." In the new Develop menu that appears in the menu bar, choose Empty Caches.
