MS6378 & leaky/exploding capacitors

Has anyone else had any problems with leaky/exploded capacitors on their MS6378?? I went to change the cpu on Monday and I noticed that the top of one of the 4 electros that sit between the processor socket and the VIA chip had popped it's top. It's still working but for how long??
When I bought the board from the retailer it only had a 3 month warranty (back in Nov) but it seems that MSI know about these problems...

Oh no! We've had enough problems with capacitors on MS-6215 barebone systems  ;(  Now it seems like the few systems we made with MS-6378's could suffer.
Do you know which Version your mobo was, and what brand the faulty capacitors are?
Cheers

  • MSI R4830 OC : The exploding capacitor issue still continuing?

    For reference, my system spec:
    MSI 790FX-GD70 mainboard
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE
    4GB OCZ Platinum 1600MHz memory
    MSI R4830 OC graphics
    1TB WD & 500GB Seagate harddrives
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate
System isn't overclocked and has never been.
    The story...
Today after doing a bit of gaming (WoW) all of a sudden my computer BSOD'ed and after the auto-reboot of W7, the bios gave me an error notification saying: "a hyper transport sync flood error occurred on last boot. Press F1 to continue". After just continuing Windows booted fine and I was able to run the regular programs without any issues. Wanting to continue gaming, I again started WoW, and even before I got into the login screen, windows BSOD'ed again, after which the bios again came back with the hyper transport sync error.
Doing some research on the error, I came to a conclusion, that there apperently are many reasons why it occurs, but no single sollution to solve it. So I just continued, let my computer be for a moment, and idle'ing it for a couple of hours. During that time no issues at all.
Until about an hour ago... I wanted to try to get WoW started again and amazingly it did, without crashing. Until I was in the game for about 5 minutes and then the computer did NOT BSOD this time, but immediately did a full powerdown. Trying to power it up again after that failed, after taking the PSU of the mains and plugging it in again, the system would "turn on" for less then a second and immediately powered down again.
Time for some hardware inspection then. Took of the harddrives & dvd (power & sata) to no avail. The system would still only "turn on" for less then a second. Next to be taken out was the graphics card (MSI R4830 OC), after removing it the system would turn on again and stay on this time. So there it was... some sort of failure in the graphics card. After powering down again and inserting the graphics card again and then again trying to turn on the system, back to the previous situation where it would only "turn on" for less then a second.
This made it obvious that there was only a single cause to the entire situation and that's the graphics card.
After inspecting the graphics card I noticed the following:
(Click to see a larger version of the photo)
Note the upper most capacitor, it was bloated and had been leaking. Off all the capacitors on the board (most of them are solid-state caps, only 5 classic caps) this the only one that burst.
Seeing this immediately makes me remember the situation we had about 8 years ago, with exploding capacitors all over the place (I have seen much of my hardware in those year fail due to exploding caps): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague
Considering the location of the capacitor near the power connector of the board, I suspect the capacitor to be related to handling the power supply from that connector. If that is the case, most likely the board might not receive (enough) power from the PSU to power the board, causing the PCI-E power usage to run to high, in turn causing the mainboard to turn of for safety.
How long this capacitor has been blown I don't know, but I wished I would have noted earlier. Until today everything worked fine, but it could very well be this cap was already blown for months.
As a final question, has anyone else recently had any exploding capacitors on MSI products (and I'm not talking about hardware from the problem era, but rather the more recent hardware, in which the capacitor issue should have been solved long time ago)?

The card is produced early 2009, so technically from the period after the issues there were with the bad Taiwanese caps. Out of the 15 caps on the board in total, 10 are solid-states and only 5 are still the old electrolyte ones, of which one obviously blew.
And indeed I am aware of what they are used for and what issues they cause if they go bad. Have seen approx. 20-30 motherboards & another 10 graphics cards fail due to exploding caps during the time where the issue arose with the stolen electrolyte. (Luckily only a few mainboards were actually mine, but had many friends and family members with the issue).
This is the first time I've seen the issue come up since around 2008 when an old socket 7 board blew which was owned by a family member.
I do wonder though how the unstable graphics card is related to the "hyper transport sync flood error", if at least this blown cap is the one and only reason my system BSOD'ed.

  • K7 Master S w/ exploded capacitors

    Hi all,
Thanks for your help in diagnosing the wonderful "exploding capacitor" problem.
My question is - how do I go about seeing if this board is still under warranty? I purchased it on eBay in September 2002, new, from an individual. I don't see anything on this site about warranty information, and I can't find anything in the manual.
If the board is out of warranty, how difficult is it to actually replace the capacitors? I have already ordered them, and I was wondering if it's worth trying to do it myself.
    Thanks again,
    Jeremy

Wonkanoby: I can't find anyone local to do it that will charge me less than a new MB! Anyways, this MB is from my second backup machine - it doesn't matter if it takes a month.
How do I go about contacting MSI about warranty work? I can't find any numbers/addresses on this site at all! Maybe I'm just stupefied by this heat wave...

  • Frequent need for smu reset and restart

What could be causing this? A little background: Everything had been fine for some time, than just recently have had problems with this iMac. I had 2 gigs of crucial ram that appeared to go bad in the last two weeks, evidenced by kernel panics. Replaced that with the old chip (512 megs) that I was able to get to work. Now from time to time, the computer will freeze and the fan noise will get very loud. This is solved by a restart. Frequently, especially after the computer has been shut down overnite, I need to do an smu reset (unplug the power cord for 10 seconds, plug it back in with the power button held down, then restart.)

I opened up the back of the computer. There are no obviously burnt or exploded capacitors, there is maybe one that is a little bulging on top. I then took apart the power supply and visually inspected the capacitors. There were no obviously burnt or exploded capacitors, there were two where the top was a little bit bulging.
I examined the LEDs on the motherboard. They seem fine.
I am still getting the odd kernel panic. I booted up from the install disk and attempted to do a disk repair and got an error saying "invalid key for thread record".
So I am really perplexed. This computer is nearly 5 years old, and while I would love to get it working reliably, I wonder if I am at the point of diminishing returns, in other words don't throw good money after bad. I have read that DiskWarrior might be useful, but that is $100. Power supply might be bad, hard drive might be going, and I'm not even sure if that is the entire extent of the problem!!!

  • Hard Drive Of Zen Xtra problem... help me !

After exactly 3months and 3 days the Zen Xtra went haywire. Exactly how ? How Should I explain it... I guess I should start by describing what happend. A few days ago , I was sitting down listening to my Zen when I heard this poping sound ... I sniffed the zen , and it smelled like burned ... capacitors. Then when I moved it a bit , there was this rattling sound . There was 2 diffrent sounds , thus created by two diffrent broken parts ?
Right after the poping sound the thing shut down ... I tried several times to turn it on , yet when I did ... there was a screen saying : Rescue Mode. Then upon trying to format all ... It responded with : HardDisk Problem. What Should I do ? I am pretty angry at Creative , exploding capacitors ? yeah... I want an explanation , Creative Labs... Due to timezone constraints I cannot call you. And one more thing : Please explain what could of happend.

To all you mods out there : any idea why ? Cause the replacement 40$ + some other amounts ) could have the same effect ? I think it was dangerous , cause the popping sound , was really loud... really really loud.

  • Scratchy sound coming from speakers

    # After searching the forum,?I had to post. I have the X-Fi Xtreme Audio card installed. When I playback any songs or videos, i get a scratchy sound from the audio. I have uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled twice with no improvement. Please help!

It's a shame a company this large doesn't have some moderators that will at least help pointing you in the right direction. I did consumer electronics repair for many years but that's been like 20 years ago. I came into the field just as we were switching from tubes to solid state. Fortunately electrons still flow in the same direction and block diagrams are still pretty much the same for most things.
I'm having the same problem with a THX 550 5. surround sound system. That scratchy sound unfortunately can come from many things from leaky electolytic capacitors to amplifier transitors breaking down to a physical aspect which is... if you have overdri'ven your speakers too many times the coils can be cooked which creates a scratchy sound as the speaker cone moves forward and backward. To make sure that is or isn't the problem get access to the speaker cone and apply pressure EVENLY to the cone and push it in and listen for the scratching. By evenly I mean put a couple of fingers on opposite sides of the cone and GENTLY? push in. Depending on the size of the speaker it travels a very little bit. Say on a 2? inch woofer the travel might be something like a quarter to half inch of travel. If that's your problem solution is simple... replace it. If not I'ld start looking at the larger electrolytic caps in the amplifier section. The only way to check these without a good and I mean good cap checker, the cheap ones will lie to ya, is to simply remove and replace. Best bet is if you can replace the board itself.
Hope that helps you a little.

  • Msi pt 880neo fsr dead heelllp

    hello, the problem:
pc was working fine, turned of... come back turned on and... dead
recently i had some issues referred to the psu... two psu died by some kind of overvoltaje then i buy another new and wok fine until this...
i dont know if the processor and mobo died or only one of them, i can use the d-braket and power up the mobo without processor to diagnose if the motherboard is alive or it will not work
if the mobo is dead and in the pcb there is no visible damage (burned, exploded capacitors, etc) what is the first thing in mind to fail in this case, may be the precessor regulation stage
    some ideas

  • Enermax EG651P-VE FMA 550w PSU Capacitor Exploded

Was just using the computer on New Year's Eve when the computer switches itself off.
After trying some troubleshooting methods for a while to see why it wouldn't turn back on, I looked through the fan holes on the PSU (Enermax EG651P-VE FMA 550w PSU) and saw that a capacitor had exploded and put all this white stuff all over another part
Still under warranty, but the shop doesn't re-open until the 17th of January.
I'm very pleased that the PSU didn't take the rest of the system with it!
I ordered an Antec 550w True Power from another shop, which will be here in 2 days.
Currently I'm using a 400w generic PSU which has 24a on the +12, which is better than my old Thermaltake 420w (18)

    Hi Scott
Enermax are  usually pretty sound,  White powder, its not an import from Columbia is it
Be interesting to see whats wrong with Enermax.

  • Leaky capacitors, voltage regulator shot on board

    Hi
    I posted my problem
    Hi there
If you have any experience on my problem please share it with me.
When I push the power button, there is current flow, some hard disk activity
and sometimes cd-rom activity. But at this point nothing else happens. My
screen remains black and windows does not start (i figured that out because
there is no hard disk activity). After some reboots (sometimes 7) my system
starts and I see the lilo screen.
    What might that be?
    Thank you in advance
    vga: ati 7200 vivo
in the forum list and I got this response
    {leaky capacitors,voltage regulator shot on board}
The hardware store were I bought my m/b from has closed. Is there any
    guarantee available?
My m/b is the K7T266 Pro and it is 1-1,5 year old
    My country is Greece, Athens

    Hi,
Contact MSI directly, they will help you.....

  • MS-6330 Leaky Capacitor

    For Pictures see: http://members.lycos.co.uk/cbwhiz/cap
    Anyway:
I'm getting psuedo random reboots. When they occur, it happens more frequently untill I pull the plug of over an hour. I've narrowed it down to this leaky capacitor problem.
Can someone tell me how I can call MSI, and If they provide me with a replacement board? (or fix this one for a small fee?) I cant find any contact info on their site. Thanks In advance.

if over 2 years old they would charge plus 2x lot delivery charges
try a local tv repair shop should be much cheaper
contact us in bar on main front page for their numbers

  • Does the new Time Capsule still have the exploding power supply?

I've always liked the idea of TC, except I read how the design is so bad, with power supplies that explode, fans that simply do not turn on (what is the point to that?) and so have a VERY short lifespan.
Has Apple finally designed the TC so that it will last as long as any other hard drive?  That would be nice.  Then I would get one.

I doubt the word explode is correct.. overheated and caused the capacitors to die.
The design is fundamentally flawed. There is no way a running fan can draw in cool air so there is no point running it. The unit is sealed so when the power supply does die, it cannot be replaced.. although as a part it is probably $20 and would be around half an hour of techs time to replace if they were made available. But no.. it is a consumable. Someone has been having to many executive lunches to understand the cost is significant to the hoi polloi even if Apple Executives miss the point.
The newer ones are definitely cooler running.. but the same design flaw hasn't gone away.

  • Convert bad capacitor g5 imac to full functional flat screen TV?

Have anyone with worthless g5 Imac due to leaky capacitor tried to removed the system board and convert it to flat screen tv type? That would be cool looking flat screen tv!

Why don't you get it fixed through Apple's Return Exchange programs:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
    http://www.apple.com/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/
They are two different programs for two different series of iMac G5s.
And then you can use one of http://www.elgato.com/ 's tuners to see TV on your Mac.

  • Bulging and Leaky Caps late to show

Our G5 1.8 iMac has only now begun to show bulging and leaky capacitors on the mid plane board. Not very many - about six, but enough to cause a failed start up. Until last week it's worked perfectly, and when I last had the back off - mid Feb 07 for more RAM - it looked healthy.
This particular iMac serial number is in the range of the Apple extended warranty program, but even allowing for that (and my purchased Applecare) its three year ownership expired in October of last year.
Does anyone know if it's worthwhile to pay to have Apple replace the board or should we say goodbye and buy a nice new aluminium model.
    Thanks for any thoughts.

Well this is encourging, my 17" iMac G5 1.8 also starting acting up one day last week with video problems and then about 2 hours later the video went out completely. Took the back off to find about 5 or 6 Cap's leaking, put the back cover back on and took it into Service depot last week, called today and they are submitting the request for repair today so I'm hoping that I will also get the same treatment and have repairs done at no cost. This machine's applecare warranty ran out in either Dec. of last year or early Jan. of this year and it's serial number is in the included range for the extended repair program. I'll be a little upset if some are getting their iMac's repaired that are out of warranty if they refuse to repair mine.

  • Stack Explodes when i try to run the application

    Hi all,
First of all let me tell you that i am very new to the concepts of JSP/ JSF and so on. And that i have searched for answers via google and within this forum but was unsuccessful.
The application is based on the tutorial that is available here under the tutorial link
    http://help.eclipse.org/help33/index.jsp?topic=/org.eclipse.jst.jsf.doc.user/html/tasks/create_managedbean.html
    1. The 1st problem that i had was that i was getting a "Resource Not Found" error
The reason for this i think is that the initial page name i was using was Login.jsp which was not within the web.xml file
      <welcome-file-list>
        <welcome-file>index.html</welcome-file>
        <welcome-file>index.htm</welcome-file>
        <welcome-file>index.jsp</welcome-file>
        <welcome-file>default.html</welcome-file>
        <welcome-file>default.htm</welcome-file>
        <welcome-file>default.jsp</welcome-file>
</welcome-file-list>by adding it to the file i was able to fix the problem.
    2. The 2nd problem was a runtime exception
java.lang.RuntimeException: Cannot find FacesContextThis was apparently due to the fact that my file extention was .jsp and the application was not being run as a jsf.
i was able to fix this by adding this entry to the web.xml file.
    </servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    3. The 3rd problem was now i was getting a Class not found exception
java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/servlet/jsp/jstl/core/ConfigAnd i was able to fix this by adding the jstl.jar and standard.jar files to the classpath
    4. The current problem that i am facing now is that there are multiple exceptions and eventually the stack explodes.

  • ADF application to be deployed in exploded mode in weblogic

How can we deploy the ADF Application (EAR) in exploded mode in weblogic server?
i.e I have ADF based application named Application.EAR. How can i deploy it in exploded mode?
    Thanks in advance,
    Navaneeth

As far as WebLogic is concerned, we take a standard Java EE deployment module, in either archived or exploded form and deploy it. You point the deployment utility (or the console, or the ant tasks or the Maven plugin) at the source of the deployment and WLS will deploy it.
There's nothing specific in what WLS requires for exploded deployment, so this is likely to be more a question specific to ADF as to how it is packaged and able to be deployed. I'd post your question to the ADF/JDeveloper forum to ask those folks specifically.
