MSA 1000 HP Storage with 10g RAC

Hi All,
We are planning to install Oracle 10g R2 2 node RAC using 2 DL580 servers as 2 nodes and HP Storageworks MSA1000 as the shared storage for ASM. The OS is RHEL 4 Update 4. Are there any packages need to installed or steps to be followed for MSA 1000 on linux to use as a shared storage in RAC?
Thanks,
Praveen

Hi, Thanks for the response...
We are supposed to install it in one our client place, And client has Fibre channels to connect DL580 servers to HP Storageworks MSA 1000 shared stoarge. As per the link which you have given, in that it is mentioned that iscsi is an alternative to Fibre channel. and also, it is mentioned that, there are some packages installed which are related to FireWire in order to support dual logins from both nodes. my doubt is..are there any packages to be installed in-order to use MSA 1000 as shared storage with Fibre channels?
Thanks,
Praveen

  • Load Balancing with 10g RAC

    Hi,
I have one query regarding balancing load with RAC.
We have some batch processes executed from shell script in Oracle RAC environment where a separate node is used for failover only. There are some issues related with performance. We are looking for a solution to utilize 'idle' node used for failover to resolve this issue.
I want to know whether the below mentioned scenario is possible to achieve with 10gRel2 RAC.
A batch process is running and it is utilizing all resources (CPU) of instance 1, then it is possible by any means that this process be split and distributed to idle instance 2 on another node?
    Looking for expert advice.
    Regards
    Amit

    Hi Amit,
I;ve done lots of RAC implementations, and it;s critical to set-up the primary node accordig to the "type" of table access. For example, cistomer queries on node 1, order queries on node 2, etc. Minimizing pinging is very important!
Staring in Oracle 10g release 2, Oracle JDBC and ODP.NET provide connection pool load balancing facilities through integration with the new “load balancing advisory” tool. This replaces the more-cumbersome listener-based load balancing technique.
    I have more notes here:

  • EBS 11i with 10g RAC - rapid clone

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle EBS 11i (11.5.10) with Oracle 10g RAC (two node) on Linux server.
I am using ASM for 10g RAC.
Now I want to rapid clone the EBS to devp server having two node RAC.
Will you pls give me detail steps to perform this cloning?
    Any help is highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    DR

Take a look Doc ID: 230672.1 on Metalink Section 6 talks about Cloning a RAC system
If you're trying to search for anything on EBS look for Applications 11i, because most docs refer to it as Applications 11i more often then EBS.

    Hi
can I use oracle11g CRS along with 11g/10g RAC databases together? Are they compatible.

Absolutely. As far as you have the CRS at the highest version, you can have Oracle RAC databases with different versions (lower than CRS Version).

  • 10g RAC Storage knowledge for I/O tuning

    Gurus,
With 10g RAC lot of DBA's require more and more knowledge of storage like LUN,LUN TUNING,IO TUNING.
Are there any books that teach information like
    1.Best practice for ASM.
2.LUN configration steps and best practice.
    3.I/O tuning.
I am facing lot of issues with I/O responce times in RAC with ASM environment. Most of the time the responce
time is more than 10ms but its very difficult to explain and get proper feed back from SA and Storage teams.
Any advice how to gain more knowledge and resolve IO issues.
Looking forward to get a very techinal responce from Gurus :).

    Learning Oracle,
I don't think this or any other Oracle forum is a place for free consultancy, especially if you don't specify any details.
Richmond Shee and others have published a book on the Oracle Wait Interface, it is pretty indispensible.
Oracle Press has also a book on ASM out.
As this is not the place to post free abstracts of books, made by volunteers, I suggest you visit sites lke www.amazon.com or www.bn.com or whatever vendor you have access to.

  • SqlDev3.0 prod - Conn randomly hangs during opening, mainly with 11g RAC

Hi, i have been having this issue since i moved to 3.0 PROD version from EA version.
Now and then, same connection hangs during opening of connection, mainly with 11gR2 RAC databases. Sometimes it works with no changes. I don't see this problem with 10g RAC or non-RAC connection. Connection does not even make it to listener log file, so it looks like java thread gets into some hitch locally.
I wonder if somebody has found solution for this.
btw, with EA, i did not have problem with same connection. so far, i have been killing the sqldeveloper thru' task manager and then open it again (sometimes couple times, before i get thru').
    Thanks

i can not use auto update from tool itself as we dont have admin rights on laptops(update feature is not able to contact download center of Oracle). so we use standalone releases of SQLDeveloper. How can i download this patch and apply it? do you have link to the patch? I did some search, it was not giving me anything useful.
    I am using Version 3.0.04, Build MAIN-04.34 (From Help->About).

  • Latest BNX2 driver crashes 10g RAC nodes

I have a situation with 10g RAC on SLES-9 on HP Proliant 580 servers where sqlnet load balancing with jumbo frames works fine until the latest bnx2 Broadcom drivers (1.7) are applied. There are intermittent node crashes after load is generated on the RAC system (11i E-Business Suite). The crashes are 100% repeatable using hammerora and a load balanced sqlnet entry.
HP is claiming the crashes are an Oracle problem, but the crashes go away when the older bnx2-1.6 drivers are reloaded.
Anybody else having issues with the latest Broadcom drivers with RAC?

    Hi mdtaylor
It seems that oracle (at least with redhat on a DELL server) is using those drivers http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/validated-configurations/html/vc_dell6950-oel4-rhel4-md3000_1.html.
What about asking people on the suse forum http://forums.opensuse.org/ or if you have support make a service request at Suse?

  • Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue

I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.
I’ve 2 node cluster each being Dell 2850 Server with RHEL 4.0
I’ve EMC CX300 SAN storage with following partitions
    /orasoft     10 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /oracrs          2 Gb          OCFS2 File system
    /orabackup      100 Gb          OCFS2 File system
The datafiles are on ASM which is not directly visible in OS.
I’ve common Oracle Home installed in /orasoft/db_1 which is shared by both nodes in cluster.
I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
    Is this setup correct ??
Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??

Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
Here is what you can do:
    - Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
    - Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

    Hi,
If you create a new diskgroup you may be to add the same diskgroup to parameter file or spfile and which will be needing down time.
sugestion: Instead of creating new diskgroup you should to add disk to existing group.if you add asm disk to existing group your all problem will be solved and Oracle itself will be managing all.And than i am sure no need to add entry in the parameter or spfile like +db_create_file_dest=.....

  • Question about a file system storage option for RAC on 10g

    Hello everyone,
I am in the beginning of connecting our storage and switches, and building RAC on them but there is a little argument between our specialists.
We have two database servers(10g with OEL 5) to be clustered and two visible disk groups to each of those nodes. So question is can we choose only one disk group as a shared storage leaving the rest one as the redundant copy during database a creation window while installing the database.  Because some of us argue that oracle database has a built-in capability to decide on what level of RAID we store our data.
    Thank you for your help.

"some of us argue that oracle database has a built-in capability to decide on what level of RAID we store our data".
That statement is not true.  Oracle has optional multiplexing for control files, redo logs, and archive logs but this is not enabled by default and Oracle will not automatically enable it.  If you want redundancy of tables, indexes, temp, and undo you must provide this because Oracle does not offer it standard or as an option.  You can achieve redundancy with RAID at the array level, or host based mirroring (like ASM redundancy groups or Linux mdadm).  This can also depend on your file system because, I think, OCFS2 does not support host based mirroring (so you cannot use mdadm or lvm to mirror the storage if you are using OCFS2).
Redundancy is not required, but it is recommended if you are using hard disks because they are prone to failures.  You can configure RAID 10 across all disks in the array and present this as one big LUN to the database server.  If you have two storage arrays and you want to mirror the data across the two arrays, then present all of the devices as JBOD and use Linux mdadm to create your RAID group.
RAC requires shared storage.  Maybe you have a NAS or SAN device, and you will present LUNs to the Oracle database servers.  That is no problem.  The problem is making those LUNs usable by Oracle RAC.  When I used Oracle 10g RAC, I used the Linux raw device facility to manage these LUNs and make them ready for Oracle RAC.  However, raw has been desupported.  Today I would use either ASM or OCFS2.  This has nothing to do with redundancy, this is just because you are using RAC.

  • Problem with Oracle 10g RAC VIP network setting at Solaris 9

    Dear All,
I have tried to set up a Oracle 10g RAC Release 2.
With OS solaris 9, and 2 nodes.
The nodes setting as the following:
    nodes 1:
    Public address: 172.16.0.121
Private address: 192.168.0.121, 192.168.1.121 (dual path for heart beat)
    nodes 2:
    Public address: 172.16.0.122
    Private address: 192.168.0.122, 192.168.1.122
And i have assigned two IP adress 172.16.0.131, 172.16.0.132 as the VIP address for the
    RAC.
And the following is the /etc/hosts file:
    root@shk01 # cat /etc/hosts
    # Internet host table
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    # public address
    172.16.0.121 shk01 loghost
    172.16.0.122 shk02
    # heart beat
    192.168.0.121 shk01-priv1
    192.168.1.121 shk01-priv2
    192.168.0.122 shk02-priv1
    192.168.1.122 shk02-priv2
    # VIP address
    172.16.1.131 vip-shk01
    172.16.1.132 vip-shk02
But when i run the command "$ ./runcluvfy.sh comp nodecon -n shk01,shk02 -verbose"
    it shows the error:
    ERROR:
Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.
    Result: Node connectivity check failed.
I did try to add the VIP address on bge0:1, as i using bge0 for the public address.
Both nodes i did using the same interface name for it.
Anyone have idea for me to check out the error?
Also, I have other question about the raw device.
As there is option for setting for ASM or raw device. If choosing raw device, does it mean that it just need to
format the storage disk but without newfs it? And then the Oracle program will able to handle it?
    Thanks,
    Xentar

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?
