MSI 4890 Cyclone - Computer Reboots With Crossfire Upon Game Startup

Hello,
I built a new computer back last December of 2009 and have been using an MSI 4890 Cyclone graphics card. I am using Windows 7 and have been able to play all video games pretty much with maxed out settings without any issues. A buddy of mine has pretty much the same exact setup I have, but wanted to get a new video card. I decided I wanted to try out the crossfire capabilities and ended up putting his MSI 4890 Cyclone in my box to crossfire with my 4890 the other day.
Everything seems to be setup correctly and the crossfire shows as enabled in my CCC. The issue I am having is that any game I load up with crossfire enabled running with both 4890s causes my computer to instantly reboot. I've disabled crossfire and the games run fine. I also tested both 4890 cards by themselves just to verfiy that there isn't an issue with either card and they both tested just fine.
I don't think there is a heat issue because my computer always reboots at the same exact spot when I load up the game. I also tested other games and the same exact thing happens right upon startup. Any ideas? If you need any additional info from me, please let me know. Any help is much appreciated and thank you in advance!
Here is what I am running:

Please test with one memory modules only and manually set the DRAM Speed to DDR2-800 and the DRAM Voltage to 1.9V.  Then retest.
In case that does not change anything, please try a different PSU.
Also, please contact ASUS Support and ask for information about ANY kind of problems regarding Crossfire combinations on this mainboard.
I highly doubt, that this issue has anything to do with the two video cards in particular.  To properly "engage" these two video cards in crossfire is first and foremost the job of the mainboard/chipset and the respective BIOS Support for this operation mode. As long as both cards are identical* have no internal malfunction and the crossfire bridge is 100% functional, this looks like a mainboard/chipset, BIOS, PSU, OS or driver issue.
*Please compare the VBIOS Versions of the two cards.  This is the only thing I can think of that could interfere with proper CF operation.  In all other cases, you should look elsewhere first.

I am recording my computer screen with an elgato game capture card.  When I play the unedited footage on my own computer, it is clear and crisp.  When I import the footage into premiere elements, it becomes blurry.  It becomes even blurrier when I save the edited video.  How do I keep the video clear?  How do I fix it?

    Thanks for the reply.
Please check out John T. Smith's information.
At this point, if you could tell us the file extension of the file involved, that would give us a start while you are
gathering the rest of the details.
You can easily get some information for us from Properties for your imported video that is blurry in the Editor.
    1. Click on Expert to get into the Expert workspace of Premiere Elements 13
    2. If you have not already, import your file into the program using Add Media/Files & Folder/Project Assets.
    3. Open Project Assets to see a thumbnail for the video that you just imported. Right click that thumbnail,
and select and click on Properties from the menu that opens.
    4. Tell us what is listed there is Properties - it should look something like this one which is specific for one of my wmv files.
Your information will be specific to the file that you right clicked in your Project Assets.
From what you have written so far, yours should show
    Image Size 1920 x 1080
Frame Rate either 59.94 or 60
Also, please go to Edit Menu/Project Settings/General, and tell us what you see for
    Editing Mode
    Timebase
    Frame Size
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
even if the fields look grayed out.
Your project settings may be contributing your Edit area previewing problems.
All of the above will keep us moving forward in the troubleshooting.

  • HD6850 Cyclone microstuttering problem with crossfire

Hi there dear MSI forum members, I'm new here and hoping to solve my newest problem with my setup.
At first, my dearest RiG's parts:
-Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z MoBo (Installed the latest BIOS and drivers)
-Intel i5 2500k CPU (With Corsair H100, it's 35-40C degrees at idle, and 58-60C degrees with Aida Extreme's benchmark)
-Corsair Vengeance 2x4 1600MHz CL9 RAM (Working at 1600MHz, without voltage tweak)
-Two of MSI HD6850 Cyclone Power Edition (Installed the latest BIOS through MSI Live Updater)
    -High Power Absoulte 750W PSU
-OCZ Agility3 60 GB SSD + Seagate Barracuda 1500GB HDD
-Cooler Master RC-690 II Advanced Case
    -Corsair H100, yet i5 2500K isn't overclocked.
-And having Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit as an OS. Nearly all of Windows performance scores are 7,8, except CPU by 7,5.
And my problem is this general issue called microstuttering with Battlefield 3 and Skyrim (with V-sync) games. Most of the suggestions are pointed at using 3-way crossfire, but I began to research anyway and found someone who solved their problem by using some old drivers like 11.10. Essentially, it didn't help me at all. Could you please share your experiences with this problem. Otherwise, I'm going to sell these cards and buy one high-end vga like GTX670.

Did you have afterburner loaded before these issues happened? I've read that people have noticed odd things like this with MSI's software loaded in the background.
Recently I've been loading it up first, but the issues started before I had afterburner really.  I'm just using it now to keep an eye on things, but I'll try not touching AB after booting just in case.
I thought I'd fixed it after reinstalling a load of drivers, but it has come back again 24 hours or so later: I'm getting 65-75% GPU use just typing on FireFox.  Damn frustrating.
I may be able to test it in someone else's machine if I can convince them to let me take over it for the coming weekend.  I've no idea what to do if it isn't the card though, I've already done everything right down to a complete format and reinstall.
Update:  Nope, the problems begin even without afterburner.

Looks like bad RAM to me. Run Memtest for no less than 8 passes:
    Memtest86+:
    Download Memtest86+ here:
    http://www.memtest.org/
    Which should I download?
You can either download the pre-compiled .ISO that you would burn to a CD and then boot from the CD, or you can download the auto-installer for the USB key. What this will do is format your USB drive, make it a bootable device, and then install the necessary
files. Both do the same job, it's just up to you which you choose, or which you have available (whether it's CD or USB).
Do note that some older generation motherboards do not support USB-based booting, therefore your only option is CD (or Floppy if you really wanted to).
How Memtest works (you don't need to read, it's only for those interested in the specifics):
Memtest uses algorithms (specifically two), namely moving inversion & what is deemed Modulo-X. Essentially, the first algorithm fills the memory with a pattern. Starting at the low address, it checks to see if the pattern was changed (it should not have
been), writes the patterns complement, increments the address, and repeats. Starting at the highest address (as opposed to the lowest), it follows the same checklist.
The reason for the second algorithm is due to a few limitations, with the first being that not all adjacent cells are being tested for interaction due to modern chips being 4 to 16 bits wide regarding data storage. With that said, patterns are used to go ahead
and ensure that all adjacent cells have at least been written with all possible one and zero combinations.
The second is that caching, buffering and out of order execution will interfere with the moving inversions algorithm. However, the second algorithm used is not affected by this. For starting offsets of 0-20, the algorithm will write every 20th location with
a pattern, write all other locations with the patterns complement, repeat the previous one (or more) times, and then check every 20th location for the previously mentioned pattern.
Now that you know how Memtest actually works, it's important to know that the tests it goes through all mean something different. It goes from Test 0 through Test 12, many of which use either one or the other algorithm discussed above, among many other things.
Any other questions, they can most likely be answered by reading this great guide here:

dram frequency should be 1:1, particularly so if having problems like so
fsb = 166.  Also want memory bus at 166 Mhz, means ddr = 333
see if that gets rid of reboots
I have changed frequency to 1:1.......and i am actually running in dual channel now....
    my ram are running 166 with timmings 2.5 - 3 - 3 - 7
    before in single channel frequency
    my ram was running 200 with timming 3 - 3 - 3 - 8

  • Computer Reboots and Freezes Upon iPod Connection

On a fairly frequent occasion, my computer will reboot and then the mouse will freeze up when I connect my iPod. I am running XP and connect through a USB port on the computer. The frustrating thing about this is that it doesn't occurr all the time. Somtimes everything works fine. When the computer does freeze, I have to shut it down, disconnect the USB from the iPod and try again. Usually it take a couple of trys to get things to work. Anyone have this problem and if so do you know of a fix. I am using the latest Nano software updates.
    Velocity Micro   Windows XP

It only happens when I connect the iPod to the USB port, but not everytime. Sometimes it works fine. Is there a difference between the order of connection. Should I first connect the iPod to the cable and then the cable to the USB port on the computer, or connect the USB end to the computer first and then iPod to the other end.

  • MSI 4890 OC Cyclone - Black Screen , Flickers , Polygon , Streaks , BSOD Issues

I purchased the MSI 4890 Cyclone OC and whenever I launch a video or video game it goes black like the monitor was in standby mode. Audio is still playing, but I can't do anything unless I restart the computer. Sometimes it will flicker first then go all black. All video clips show artifacts or some kind and black and white line streaks horizontally across the display. A couple times it would give me the BSOD.
I did everything I was suppose such as wipe out old drivers, install latest drivers (9.8 catalyst), temps are good, etc. Both DVI and RGB connectors do the same thing.
What's going on here? This card has given me nothing, but headaches. Any help would be appreciated!

I did and it is doing the same thing. I have been reading around and other 4890 owners had encountered this problem.

  • Can no longer overclock CPU after installing 4890 Cyclone OC

I recently purchased a MSI 4890 Cyclone OC to replace my XFX 8800 GT.  With the 8800 GT, I was able to overclock my E8400 to 3.6 GHz from 3 GHz stock.  After I installed the 4890, my PC will no longer accept any CPU overclock.  When I power on my system with any OC, the PC will start to come up, power cycle itself before POST and reset the BIOS back to default clock speeds, and finish booting into Windows XP Home.  Even with no OC, the PC seems to take longer to POST than with the 8800 GT.
I uninstalled the Nvidia driver before installing the 4890 and installed the latest ATI driver v. 9.8.  I flashed my motherboard's BIOS to the latest version, set it to the defaults, and then put my OC settings back in.  However, that didn't help.
I read in the NCIX forum that someone else had this exact same problem with his 4890 Cyclone, and he had a different model Gigabyte board.  I'm wondering if there is some sort of incompatibility.  Thanks for any help.

I have not talked to Gigabyte yet since my problems only occur with the 4890 installed.
That it precisely why I suggested to contact Gigabyte.  Maybe they can reproduce it and come up with a BIOS Fix or something.  I had a 4890 Cyclone here for testing last week which I used to build a system for a friend.  I had no such issues when I tested the card in my P45 Platinum (E6600 overclocked to 400 x 9) and he also has no problems on his P45 Asus Board (OCed Q9650).

    pretty sad

... this same name and password doesn't work as an administrators password when i want to download or change things.
It's probably that your Keychain password is not the same as your login password. If you configured your computer to log you in automatically, you may not have used your login password in so long you forgot it.
There is no way to retrieve the "login" Keychain password, but you can reset the Keychain from the Preferences menu: select it in the Keychain Access menu and select "Reset My Default Keychain". This will create a new, empty Keychain but the old one will be saved should you ever remember its password.
The result of this is that you will have to supply passwords for everything that requires it, since without your Keychain they will no longer automatically fill themselves. However, once you supply them and store them in your new Keychain, they will be remembered.

There isn't an error message but checking the event log it states a sudden and unexpected loss of power had occurred. My power supplies are both new and gold rated. My drivers are current and the bios is the latest released (the one with the patch for the fans). I'm at a loss to explain the problem and will RMA as a last resort. Any ideas guys? Thanks

Use Afterburner and check "Force Constant Voltage" in their Settings. I think what causes these are the power saving sort of designs for both the mobo and vga, tbh, which makes the voltage more unstable. I think check this would help the problem a bit. Maybe you guys can try.
I figured that it was an issue with hardware stepping down  to save power and I've forced voltage to remain constant but the crash still happens unfortunately.

I finally added the second 4890 card, but the fan stays at 100%. Checked with CCC overdrive, and the card is reporting 127c, 0 fan speed. I also can not change the fan speed manually in CCC overdrive, always 100% and it is loud. The heatpipes are not hot though.
Things I have tried, well I tried a lot thinking it was a crossfire/driver issue but I think these are the most relevant.
1- Tried the 100% fan card solo. Same thing and I do get video to monitor.
2- Tried the 100% fan card in the PCIE slot where the non issue card was working along with changing the PCI power connectors from working card. Same thing.
3- Checked the MSI utility to see if a bios update was needed, I did this when both cards where installed. Showed that I have the most current vga bios and drivers.
I am guessing I have a faulty card, but decided to check here if anyone has any other ideas. Thanks to all, and if you need more info I will post back.

OK, I will let you know. First update:
Vendor has already given me a RMA number(less than 2 hours). The VGA card should hopefully be in the snail mail process tomorrow.
One weird thing, my RMA was degraded from replace to repair. Not quite sure about that one? Not sure if that means that it will be replaced or sent to MSI from vendor for repair/or vendor will attempt repair? Only time will tell, I guess. The only great thing is that just one of these 4890 Cyclone OC cards beats out a single 3870x2 vga card hands down. And thanks to this forum, I was taking some time to read up on this forum. I must say I am impressed, keep up the good work moderators and MSI. Thanks and will keep you updated. Special thanks to Svet.
