MSI 4890 OC Cyclone - Black Screen , Flickers , Polygon , Streaks , BSOD Issues

I purchased the MSI 4890 Cyclone OC and whenever I launch a video or video game it goes black like the monitor was in standby mode. Audio is still playing, but I can't do anything unless I restart the computer. Sometimes it will flicker first then go all black. All video clips show artifacts or some kind and black and white line streaks horizontally across the display. A couple times it would give me the BSOD.
I did everything I was suppose such as wipe out old drivers, install latest drivers (9.8 catalyst), temps are good, etc. Both DVI and RGB connectors do the same thing.
What's going on here? This card has given me nothing, but headaches. Any help would be appreciated!

Test VGA in another machine then, as i doubt in Ultra's quality.
I did and it is doing the same thing. I have been reading around and other 4890 owners had encountered this problem.
I click on a video file and it would freeze up to a black screen, and throw me VPU recover errors. Temperature 52c.
This thread describes exactly what is going on with my card:

To me it would seem that you don't have powerful enough power supply. For your build, 600W would be recommended.
3770 can take around 100-150W, 980 can take 300-400W under full load.
it could be that your gpu is not getting enough power, so it starts flickering.
You should upgrade to Corsair 600W or 750W psu. (Corsair because it's one of the quietest and highest quality ones for good price.)

  • [HELP] MSI Radeon R9 270X BLACK SCREEN during driver installation

    Hello,
I own the R9 270X, which is on my PCI-E x16 slot, motherboard: Gigabyte ga-b85m-d3h.
When I try to install drivers for my card (those that come from AMD site, those from MSI site or those on the CD attached with card) my screen turns black in the middle of installation.
The monitor works, but there is just black screen displayed. When I restart it stays black after the Windows logo or it crashes during the usage. When it crashes it displays a solid color screen with some vertical stripes. Usually somewhere after 15 minutes from start.
My motherboard BIOS is up to date.
Card has worked great for 2 hours after fresh installation of Windows but then the problems i mentioned came back. I was even able to play games on high settings, but then the solid-color-crash occured again.
Is my card faulty and should I return it?
    Specs:
    Intel Core i5-4440
    Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H Intel B85 LGA 1150 mATX
Power: Corsair VS 450W ATX 120mm
Windows 8.1 64, but tested also on Windows 7 64 installed on my computer.

I'm back on my computer (where I can't install propper drivers), haven't checked with afterburner.
    Two scenarios:
    1. The screen started to flick/jump when we wanted to run testing game (Call Of Duty 4) on his computer, we didn't even get pass the starting window, then when we returned to Windows the flickering and jumping didn't stop. Then it was steady for a 5 second, and again flickering and jumping.
    2. When I first received my newly assembled computer after fresh Windows installation I was able to play Assassins’ Creed Black Flag for about 15 minutes, then the flickering/jumping occur. Then after many trials (including removing and trying different drivers, setting up fresh windows and so on -remember, I wasn't able to even install the drivers after that) I was able to again install drivers and play for like 2 hours. Then - same as earlier problem occur.
So in conclusion, I've manage to install my drivers two times. But then the "solid color and stripes" or "jumping and flickering" problem occurred after few minutes of computer usage.
One more thing. On my computer even at low resolution the screen had some glitches (stripes here, dots there), on my friend's computer, there were no glitches at first. The flickering-and-jumping or solid-color-and-stripes problem occurs only on resolution HIGHER than 800x600.

  • Black Screen Flickering in Photoshop

    Hello everyone,
To my dismay I just noticed a black flickering on my screen when I was using Photoshop CC. It was when I was zoomed in on the image but I noticed that it streched the who screen length. I'm hoping it is just a photoshop issue and not some sort of hardware issue. I have the application frame turned off in photoshop so it may be possible that is why the flickering exceeded the image frame (technically the program is edge to edge on the screen if the frame is off).
I admit that I am posting this before doing more tests but it's really unnerving to see it on a new Macbook Air. For reference, I have a core i7 2013 Macbook Air with 8GB of ram.
I'm going to try to simulate it in a minute or so. This time I will adjust the frame.
I appreciate any input if you have had this issue before or are currently experiencing it.

Random crashes in Crysis Warhead DX10.  It also happened once in Command and Conquer 3 Kanes Wrath DX9.
I get a black screen monitor turns off and the sound goes buzz the system then hangs.  The reset button wont work.  The MSI LED BIOS code displays C2.   Power off then on.  The system is stable 2 hours Prime95 CPU only hits 150F.  Ran Furmark GPU stable test 1 hour.  Turned the fan to manual and set to high the gpu stays around 70c with Furmark GPU.  Memtest overnight.  No problems.  Tried CAT 10.12 10.11 10.10 the MSI downloaded version.  Nothing.  Clean drivers out.  I updated SPTD to  1.75 from per another posts advice.   Seems something is really wrong with the drivers and rendering certain objects reboots the card.  The card is rock solid on stablity tests and Futuremarks benchtests.
Nvidia Physx game driver uninstalled.  Still crashes
Now testing it with SPTD uninstalled.  Running tests have my doubts.

2 hour test ran.  No errors.  Seems like a wimpy test.  The GPU Temp never went over 42c.  360-370 FPS.
Already ran a 2 hour test with Furmark GPU with out errors or artifacts. 2 hour CPU only Prime95 test.  Memtest over night.  System is stable by all accounts.  Just when playing some games it will completely mess the system up.
For those MSI motherboard people.  Why would the LED Motherboard light say 2C or maybe it was C2.  Why would the system not reboot with the reset button.  The 6850 card some how goes in to lala land.

Did you try hard rebooting? Is the AC plugged in? Is the led blinking or just shinning?

  • Random black screen freezes - GPU or PSU issue?

    Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit
For the past three weeks, this setup has been very stable. I then went on vacation for 3 days and then came back. All of a sudden, I then started getting random black screens (which occured in the middle two consecutive LOL matches, I'm quite sure I'm in the tribunal now...). If I'm in the middle of a game, the sound will stutter, and the game/system might appear that it's still playing for a few more seconds even though I can't see anything. I either have to manually reboot, or it'll just restart itself. I don't notice any error message when my system restarts. I tried doing a 3DMARK run to stress-test it, and it black-screened during Fire Strike. Sometimes I'll get a black screen at the Windows desktop doing nothing in particular to stress the card; I even got one in my BIOS setup screen!
This morning, I did a fresh boot and ran GPU-Z. The VDDC graph doesn't look quite right to me, given all the hiccups. Oh, and 5 minutes after that screenshot, another black screen.
The reason I mention the PSU is 1) I noticed that that particular PSU is rated 40A on the 12V rail, and yet the GPU requires at least 42A. but there are two 12V rails on that PSU, for 80A, which should be more than sufficient, and 2) I didn't notice any artifacts prior to any black screen. It's just weird that these would happening out of the blue - it sounds like the kind of issue that would've been present on day 1.
    Any thoughts?

    I have the same issues.

  • MSI Radeon R7 250 black screen and mobo beep in game

Hi guys I have a bit of a problem with my video card, I bought MSI Radeon R7 250 last month I haven't played any games really since then as I had no time, but about week ago when I started to play world of warcraft, after 2h of gameplay my screen went black and my mobo buzzer started to beep, this have happened with my other games too. I have checked the buzzer code it and it turned that im getting video/display error, I have been searching over the web about the source of it but I got nothing, now my question is can I fix it somehow or is it a manufacture issue, all of my divers are up to date.
My PC is practically new i got it at the end of last year, those are the specs:
CPU: AMD Athlone IIx2 270 3.2GHz (I have overclocked it to 3.99GHz but after the errors I got it back to stock)
    RAM: 2x2Gb Corsair Value DDR3
    Mobo: MSI 760GA - P43(FX)
    GPU: MSI Afterburner Radeon R7 250 1Gb GDDR5 (4.6 Effective Memory Clock)
    PSU: 500W
When I was overclocking the CPU I got Arctic Freezer 13 so all the temps were fine.
I have runned stress test with FurMark for about 30 min just to check temps and i got 60 degree, in game im getting about 45 - 50, CPU max is 26

Try clearing CMOS >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Also try running the PC without the GPU inside (make sure you disconnect power cables).
PSU seems to be enough for this GPU. But if possible (hopefully a friend has better one) test with different PSU. And test the card in different PC too (if possible of course).

  • MSI R9 270x 4G Black Screen after drivers installation

    Hi to all,
My problem comes after two months of buying this new graphics card model. I used it for two months and it crashed. it stopped working. I formated the computer and everything was fine till I tried to install the drivers again. As soon as I install the driver of the graphic card the screen goes black. I tried to install drivers from AMD website and everything from scratch, but nothing. Still the same problem.
Don't know what to do next. Update Vbios? change driver? older one? windows regedit? Please I need a solution as my motherboard haven't got integrated graphics.

I am using an AMD ASUS 4870 1Gb. No problem. my system is not old at all. And I test it in a different computer. Same problem. Could be an incompatibility with driver and windows? No idea. I know I am not the only one with the same problem. The graphic card works  till I try to install drivers. That's my theory

  • Apple tells me that i no longer have warranty yet my computer is only 2 years old. One year warranty and i have applecare (which adds 2 years). will they fix their problems of having BLACK SCREENS OF DEATH. 2010 models affected should have been recalled.

    WHY?
It literally makes no sense at all. Apple itself has always had my back. UNTIL NOW. when my problems arise. i am a full time student and when working on video editing projects or ANYTHING that uses a graphics card (youtube, diablo 3, quicktime player, EVEN IPHOTO) causes my computer to BLACK SCREEN.
THIS IS AN ISSUE APPLE NEEDS TO RESOLVE, especially when they tell me i am not under warranty and have NO APPLE PRODUCTS REGISTERED? it is like they deleted it because last time i checked i had 3 ipods, an iphone4 and my macbook pro all registered. and when the store checked my account i have 0 apple products apparently.
I REGISTERED MY IPHONE IN THE STORE STANDING NEXT TO THE GUY WHEN I BOUGHT IT.
anyways. yes apple. nice going with a significant issue of screens cutting out for no F3948ing reason. 2010 models especially i have been reading about (which mine is) as well as laptops made before that.
    no recall?
    an update that doesn't work?
denying my applecare's existence? (even when i brought the disk and all my applecare info?)
buying a new laptop today NOT A MAC... because a WORKING computer is a necessity.
I will still try to fix this mac as i have over 2,000$ invested in it. including parallels.
IF ANYONE CAN ADRESS THIS ISSUE or figure out how it would be resolved, please let me know.
    Thanks.

    Do this.
Go to the Apple Support page and type in your serial number. When the screen comes up showing that Serial number having Applecare extended warranty take a screen shot of it or Print it out to a PDF file and then Print a Hard Copy of either of those things. Take that with you when you take your Mac in to be looked at.
Good Luck with the Lenovo. I hear they are the same quality as when IBM was making them. Personally I have always used Dell Business Class notebooks and have never had any problems with them. Still have one that is going on 11 years old and it still runs as good as the day I bought it, actually a little better because I've upgrade the CPU, GPU. RAM and HDD.

  • [SOLVED] UEFI with gummiboot: somtimes (!) just black screen

    Hi,
since two days I'm trying to get UEFI work on my Lenovo T420. The problem is that there's only a black screen when activating the "Arch Linux" entry in gummiboot if I have not plugged in the installation medium (as a USB drive). If it's inserted sytemd starts booting but stops at a certain point complaining there are starting jobs running on /dev/sdc (the USB drive); then I get to the rescue shell. If it's not inserted there's just a black screen. To start the system I have to leave the USB drive plugged in and fastly remove it when systemd starts booting after selecting "Arch Linux" in gummiboot. I don't know why, but the system does boot then.
This is what I have done:
In BIOS I changed the settings that it's booting with UEFI "and" BIOS at least trying first BIOS and then UEFI. I followed the installation instructions of the Beginner's Guide (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide) installing a system with LVM (ensuring that the install medium is booted in UEFI). I followed the recommendations of https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1240883 concerning partitioning. This is the setup I have:

Please note that I /dev/sdb1 is the EFI System Partition and there's also another partition (/dev/sdb2) I created just in case I want to use a separate /boot partition. (Currently there's syslinux on it because I was experimenting whether I get the system to boot normaly, which means without the USB drive, by using Legacy BIOS and syslinux. But I was not successful: Screen also stays black.) This is what /boot looks like and the contents of /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf and /boot/loader/loader.conf:

    niklaas@len-t420-arch ~ % cat /boot/loader/loader.conf
    timeout 3
    default arch
Additionally to the strange USB-drive-needs-to-be-plugged-in issue there is another one: Because there's a Windows 7 installation (unfortunately I need it) on /dev/sda with Truecrypt I decided to install two bootloaders: one is on /dev/sda and the other one on /dev/sdb. So I can "manually" switch between operating systems by using the boot manager that is provided by the BIOS of the motherboard which makes it possible to change boot priority quite simply. After the installation of gummiboot there was (of course) another entry created, so there are three:
    1. Linux Boot Manager
    2. ~first SSD (with Windows; /dev/sda)
    3. ~second SSD (with Arch Linux; /dev/sdb)
When I select the first entry, even the USB-drive-trick does not work. There just resides the black screen. This I do not understand at all because, as already described above:
If I select the third option, gummiboot gets loaded and I can select "Arch Linux". Then, as already mentioned, there are three options: (a) USB-drive is inserted > I plug it off immediately after systemd starts > system boots (b) USB-drive is inserted > I don't (!) plug it off > systemd complains about starting job running on /dev/sdc > I get the rescue shell (c) USB-drive is not (!) inserted > I just get a black screen.
I hope the issue I have is quite understandable. Otherwise, please ask and I'll try my best to clarify things. Any help is really appreciated,

OK. I decided to use syslinux and installed it from the AUR. After installation was successfull, I copied all files as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UE … LINUX_6.xx to /boot/syslinux and ran command
    # efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sdb -p 1 -l /EFI/syslinux/syslinux.efi -L "syslinux"

I guess, I also tried this before having the same outcome.
But I still do not understand what's happening when I select my second SSD; because there's still gummiboot loaded and I can still boot the system with the USB-drive. Does anybody know what's happening there? I'm totally clueless why the system is somehow accessing the flash drive?!

I have the same problem with this Satellite L645-S4102.  No Toshiba splash logo on startup.  Just a black screen.  There were BSOD problems before I got this laptop but I can't even get the laptop to bootup to even try and repair it.  The laptop is out of warranty.  On startup, it checks for usb bootable or DVD bootable disc (lights come on, but that's it).  any help would be greatly appreciated.  I tried taking out the batteries and leaving it for over an hour, held the power button to drain any static electricity, then put the lithium battery and laptop battery in  and still get the same results.

  • MSI 4890 Cyclone - Computer Reboots With Crossfire Upon Game Startup

    Hello,
I built a new computer back last December of 2009 and have been using an MSI 4890 Cyclone graphics card. I am using Windows 7 and have been able to play all video games pretty much with maxed out settings without any issues. A buddy of mine has pretty much the same exact setup I have, but wanted to get a new video card. I decided I wanted to try out the crossfire capabilities and ended up putting his MSI 4890 Cyclone in my box to crossfire with my 4890 the other day.
Everything seems to be setup correctly and the crossfire shows as enabled in my CCC. The issue I am having is that any game I load up with crossfire enabled running with both 4890s causes my computer to instantly reboot. I've disabled crossfire and the games run fine. I also tested both 4890 cards by themselves just to verfiy that there isn't an issue with either card and they both tested just fine.
I don't think there is a heat issue because my computer always reboots at the same exact spot when I load up the game. I also tested other games and the same exact thing happens right upon startup. Any ideas? If you need any additional info from me, please let me know. Any help is much appreciated and thank you in advance!
Here is what I am running:
VIDEO CARD #1: MSI R4890 Cyclone OC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
VIDEO CARD #2: MSI R4890 Cyclone OC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Please test with one memory modules only and manually set the DRAM Speed to DDR2-800 and the DRAM Voltage to 1.9V.  Then retest.
In case that does not change anything, please try a different PSU.
Also, please contact ASUS Support and ask for information about ANY kind of problems regarding Crossfire combinations on this mainboard.
I highly doubt, that this issue has anything to do with the two video cards in particular.  To properly "engage" these two video cards in crossfire is first and foremost the job of the mainboard/chipset and the respective BIOS Support for this operation mode. As long as both cards are identical* have no internal malfunction and the crossfire bridge is 100% functional, this looks like a mainboard/chipset, BIOS, PSU, OS or driver issue.
*Please compare the VBIOS Versions of the two cards.  This is the only thing I can think of that could interfere with proper CF operation.  In all other cases, you should look elsewhere first.
