MSI 52x Cd Writer Disappears

I have noticed this with quite a few 52x CD Writers now and i wondered if anybody else had seen it or got any idea why it happens.
Basically the drive will just stop working. If you installing windows at the point it stops working this just crashs your install. If you have windows installed the drive at random will just vanish.
Its no longer listed in My Computer and No longer listed in the device manager. Refreshing the system hardware does not seem to bring it back. If you have a Disk in the drive at the time it has vansihed, it just sits there with the read light lit on the drive and the tray will not open.
Re-cycling the power seems to be the only way to get the drive to start working again until the next time it happens.
Before people start going on about what configuration i have, i have been down this road, i have tried serveral different setups and also serveral other MSI 52x CD Drives and also drives made by other manufactuers. I am beginning to think this could be buggy firmware.
Any Ideas anyone?
JC

Ok. I have updated my CR52-A2's firmware to the latest available version (160D). The mothernoard detects it as an 'ATAPI CDRW drive'. It did not detect it as an MSI product with the previous firmware version (150D) and it still doesn't. I have originally assumed that not to be a problem, as my drive is an OEM version, but maybe something's wrong here. With the new version of firmware I've been able to successfully run a couple of installation CDs in this drive. However, I still have a problem using it to play music CDs. The drive no longer disappears from Windows Explorer and Hardware Manager, but after playing a music CD for a few minutes, the Windows Media Player (both older version 8 and the latest version 9) freezes. Sound cuts off, the light on the drive's front panel is continuously on and although I still see it in Windows Explorer, I can't do anything with it anymore. It also stops reacting to the 'Eject' button. As before, the only way to make it work again is to reboot the computer. This is definitely an improvement compared to its previous behavior, but it still is not working the way it should.
I have gone through a couple of IDE cables (both brand new) with no noticeable effect. Also, since the firmware update has partially resolved the issue, I am assuming that this is a software, not a hardware, problem. Unless a newer firmware version becomes available soon, I'll try limiting the drive's reading speed with Nero's DriveSpeed.
I'll also check the ACPI and DMA settings in the BIOS.
In the meantime, any more suggestions, anybody?

  • MSI 52x CDROM behave like that!

When I insert MSI Motherboard Driver CD to my MSI 52x CD Drive to install new system, it's OK.  But take a little time, CD Drive is spinning louder and stop reading.  I eject that CD and reinsert, prompt insert a CD.  I try to insert other CDs, the same reply.  Is it gone?  Help me.

OK... let's verify if this CD-ROM is actually working or not. Get a Windows 98 boot disk and boot yourself into DOS with the generic CD-ROM driver installed. Pop n any CD (e.g. Windows 98 CD) in the drive, and see if DOS can read it. If it can't read it, then you might want to return it for RMA.

  • DVD-writer disappears by playing a self-made DVD-RW

    HELP!
Yesterday I inserted a self-made DVD-RW in order to watch it again. Suddenly it stops playing and I cannot get the DVD-RW out of my Imac anymore!
Moreover, when I check my system information again now, it doesn't even recognize my DVD-burner (nor CD writer) anymore. It is as if this DVD "ate" my DVD-writer.
So my DVD is lost (it is in my machine and there is no way getting it out) and my disc burner has disappeared. None of the programs with which I used to burn CD's or DVD's, recognizes a disc writer anymore!
Can anyone help? I thought of downloading and installing the driver again, but I cannot find it anywhere on the internet.
I am making shortfilms, so it is very much needed to have a disc burner.
Would be great if anybody could help!
    Thanks a lot!

    Hi Joeri B
Go to: *Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility* and try ejecting the DVD from there or restart the iMac holding the mouse button.

  • Kt333 Ultra 2 + Msi 52x Cdrom = Problems

im running the kt333 ultra 2 mother board, and have bought an msi starspeed 52x cdrom, problem i am having is that when it boots up, and scans the Ide's it throws out a bunch of ascii characters for the cdrom, in the bios, if i set that sec ide master to cd/dvd it wont find one, if i let it auto detect, it shows the strange ascii art.  any ideas why to msi products wont work together?

    HI sanityloss,
Can you list out your IDE devices such as :
    IDE 1 master : ......
    IDE 1 slave : ....
    IDE 2 master : ....
    IDE 2 slave : ...
    (RAID) IDE 3 , IDE 4... etc
Also, tell us how you connect the IDE cable(s). Is it 80-conductors or 40-conductors type? Blue header on the motherboard?
And also how do you set the jumpers on all the drives, Master, Slave, or Cable Select?
Your issue here might be something wrong with all these settings, such as wrong cabling, wrong jumper settings, etc.
Please give us the information so we can sort this out.

  • I need help with my MSI 52x/24x/52x cd-rw!!

I just bought this new cd-rw to burn my cd's faster. And so i hoped i could burn cd's at atleast 40x when i had cd's compatible to it, but NO! I've tried both EProformance 40x compatible and Memorex 48x compatible, and none of these will burn on speeds higher than 16x. Now why would i burn at 16x when my old cd-rw went at that speed? I've tried both Nero and Easy CD Creator 6 and none of them allows higher than 16x. I also tried to install the 150D driver thingy, but when it scans the bus, it just shows "No CD-Rom/rw found".AARGH, i get so pissed at this, please help neone, either with how to mod the progs to allow useradjustable speeds or how to make this sh&% work!

  • MSI x48c Network card disappearing act.

Just built 2 machines one for a friend one for me.  Both identical
    x48c Platinum
    4GB 2x2 Corsair DHX DDR3 1660
    Q9550
    Visiontek HD4870
    WD velociraptor 300gb
    Vista Ultimate 64
Was able to get one stable working at 1600 fsb with a few clock and voltage tweaks (NOT MINE OF COURSE!)
The other has been unstable from the start
Cannot raise any voltages, getting constant restarts and bsods and finally last night - even thougyh vista installed the driver itself during installation - my network card dirver has gone...and yes i have reinstalled using setup.exe AND just the *.inf file to no avail.  Any suggestions>? Anyone else seen this before?
    Thanks in advance guys

For me, Vista pretty much self recognized the network card even before installing the chipset driver from MSI.
But download the MSI INF file again, it's pretty much all you can do.
You can go down to default settings in bios, get rid of all of the Overclocks first.
If the network card still is not recognized after multipel tries, it's pretty much safe to say the network portion of your mb might be fried.

  • I'm having the same registry issues with my CDROM, getting the warning when iTunes starts up.  I've followed the article on how to add the upperFIlter to the registry and it solves the warning message but the DVD/CD writer disappears completely.

I'm having thet same registry issues with my CD-/DVD as is talked about in one of the fix articles I've found here. I added the UpperFilter entry to the registry since it was not there and restarted.  This fixes the warning message but then there's no CD/DVD device shown at all in windows.  I can put it back to normal and vice versa and get the same results, but I can't get this issue fixed. When I get the registry warning on starting iTunes, I can still rip from CDs and my DVD burner works just fine using other programs.
    Any more ideas?

This fixes the warning message but then there's no CD/DVD device shown at all in windows.
That symptom suggests the afs.sys issue ... but there's some other things that might cause it too.
We'd better check to see if we can find what's going on.
Could you post your diagnostics for us please?
In iTunes, go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck the boxes other than DVD/CD tests, as per the following screenshot:
    ... and click "Next".
When you get through to the final screen:
... click the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste the diagnostics into a reply here.

    How to disable the ExactLink?
Well, if you're using nero, go to Recorder/Choose recorder, and then a little window will popup with the burner's options. Then, you can disable EXactLink or BurnProof or whatever method your drive use as buffer underrun protection.
    Hope this helped.

  • When will MSI put out firmware that recognizes media properly?

i just got a replacement drive from MSI.
It is a CR52-A2 and I just updated the firmware to 180D.
The drive will not recognize  my CD-R's at their proper speed.
The 52x media it insists is 32x.
    Same with the 48x media.
I put an LG 52x drive in the same machine and it recognized the media at the correct speeds, so this a FIRMWARE PROBLEM with the CDRW.
I had the same problem with the old MSI drive, but I hoped that a year later
they would be able to figure this out.
I will never by an MSI CDRW again.

    Which hardware?
My computer? or the MSI CDRW?
The 8348 that I used to have only recognized one blank as being 48x times
and that was the blank that came with the drive.
All others, because of serious deficiencies in the firmware, it recognized as being much slower.
Same thing with my MSI 52x burner.
During the several months I waited for my replacement MSI CDRW,
I bought an LG 52x burner.
It recognizes the correct speed of media, including numerous brands of 48x 52x and all speed media.
It will burn blank media at the correct speed including up to 52x.
So since my computer with Nero software can correctly burn 52x CD's with my LG burner, It must be the MSI drive that is the problem.
BTW, look at the latest firmware revision
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=410&kind=5
    Release new F/W version 180D
    1. Improve high-speed CD-R/RW medium compatibility
WHAT DO YOU SUPPOSE THIS MEANS?????
It means that they know that the previous firmware didn't recognize media properly.
    And guess what???
    IT STILL DOESN"T!!!!
    BTW,
looking back at my original post from 05.09.2002 01:36
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=3402&sid=
    32x is a definite improvement.
my MS-8348B only wrote at 16x.
The same disks in the current drive write at 32x in the MSI drive.
IN the LG drive at their rated speed.

  • MSI Liveupdate3 Intel INF Update

As a new user, I will do my best to avoid revealing that I, in fact, know very little about PC's, and even less about motherboards.  Unfortunately for me, I recently decided to use MSI's Liveupdate3, and pretty much just downloaded and installed everything it had selected, being the amateur moron that I am.  This meant that I flashed the bios, and also downloaded and installed the Intel INF update under "live driver" that is version 5.00.1012.  Everything seems to be working fine (thank god, because after reading these forums I will never ever again flash my bios), except that now during boot up I get an odd "err" noise right after a beep.  A techie friend of mine didn't recognize the noise, nor did he feel that it was a problem.  However, the other change my system experienced after flashing the bios and the inf update was that it now thinks I am running a dual proc pc; which I am not (I will list specs at the bottom). I noticed this by looking in the "device manager" area.  Uninstalling one of the procs doesn't seem to help; when I boot up the 2nd is right back there.  Under the system information tab it also shows that there is two procs.  Also, (I hope I am saying this in a way you can understand due to my limited knowledge) under the system information tool, it seems like there is another of all the devices listed. (I wish I could paste my entire system information printout here).  My techie friend says that there seems to be a lot of resource sharing going on with copies of devices that obviously don't excist.  At first I was convinced that this all had to do with my flashing to the latest bios, but I think that it has to do with the Intel INF update. My techie friend says that he has a hunch that if I installed it again I would see three of everything.  I would really like to get my PC back to thinking that it only has one proc and isn't sharing all these non excistent devices, and then uninstall msi liveupdate and forget I was ever such an idiot.  I would really appreciate any kind of input; here or at my e-mail [email protected]
    Thank you for your time.
System Specs (homemade comp, listed as best as I know)
    Mobo: MSI Intel 875P Neo-FIS2R
    Bios version: 1.60
Intel INF version (from Liveupdate3): 5.00.1012
Proc: Intel p4 2.6 gigahertz FSB 800MHz HT enabled
Video card: Leadtek Winfast a310 Ultra TD (Geforce 5600 Ultra 128mb ddr)
Sound Card: Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Ram: 2 sticks Kingston Hyper X 512mb DDR
Case: Antec Plus 1000 Series 430W TruePower ATX12V
    Monitor: Viewsonic g220fb
    Speakers: Klipsch Promedia 5.1
Modem: Creative Modem Blaster v.92 PCI
Hard drive: Western Digital 120gig 7200rpm
DVD Drive: ATAPI DVD Rom 16x max
CDRW Drive: ATAPI MSI 52x max
    Operating System: Windows XP
    NO FLOPPY DRIVE

In device manager it lists that I have 3 mice (two HID-Compliant one PS/2 Compatabile), when I only have two; one wireless, one wired.  Under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" it lists USB Root Hub 5 times.  Under "Human Interface Devices" it lists USB Human Interface Device 3 times. The USB devices I have connected currently are a gamepad and the receiver for my wireless logitech keyboard/mouse. Under "Monitors" it lists my Viewsonic g220fb, but then "default monitor" 3 times.  The only other display I have attached is a tv connected to the video out on my geforce 5600 Ultra.  Also, under the "Computer" tab it lists "ACPI Multiprocessor PC", which it should because of the Hyper Threading?
That is the double listings under device manager, which I see as less of a problem.  What seemed more vexing to my techie friend was what was listed under the system information tool.
Using the system information tool, this what I am seeing under "hardware resources". (I hope this is readable =(. it looks better in the text doc).

  • Question on Radio tuner and msi radio on getting it to work

Ok Iv installed MSI Radio, also got the radio card muted with the msi media center uninstalled that thing is just evil, problem now is the msi radio is not talking to my radio on my msi mega 865 deluxe, the msi media center 3 works with it, but i cant mute the radio card on the audio settings. The radio card starts up when msi radio starts up but none of the tuner options work, i get the fuzz in the back ground but the buttions are not talking to the mega 865's radio card what can I do I want to avoid the msi media center 3 because I will not be able to mute my radio and will have that annoying fuzzy stuff running in the back ground that will annoy me to no ends lol
    MSI MEGA 865 Deluxe
    p4 2.8ghz HT
    1 gig of kingston Ram
MSI Geforce FX 5700LE 256mb AGP
    MSI Mega Tv Tuner Card
    80 gig Segate Baracuda
MSI 52x CDROM CDR/DVD Combo Drive
Windows XP PRO SP2 With MS PLUS! Digital Media Edition

at least you're getting somewhere with this now
what is this background fuzz you keep going on about? thats the sound of an untuned radio...
if you aren't happy with media centre 3 (who is?  ) then make sure you fully uninstall it, and uninstall the mega radio program (for now)
turn off your pc and unplug the power lead for a few seconds then reconnect.
put into hi-fi mode and make sure radio is working - if it ain't working in hi-fi mode its not gonna work in windows. try tuning a few stations in, and then leave it set to a station you recognise...
if all is ok, then power into pc mode (making sure you turn off hi-fi mode first)
if you hear the radio playing when windows has started (as opposed to "background fuzz" now you have a station tuned in), open the windows volume control and look for the "Radio" slider, you might need to go into advanced properties (under options) and tick the box to show it. just tick the mute box, no need to adjust slider.
now install the mega radio program (it is found on the Mega 651 downloads page for correct version). now when the radio program starts and closes, it should automatically "tick" and "untick" the mute box in the Radio volume slider itself

  • FSB on MSI-6580

Is it normal that my FSB is set at 133 in the bios, even though my processor supports the 533 FSB? My system specs are listed below. You'll have to excuse my extreme newbieness when it comes to this stuff...Thanks
    MSI-6580 (845GE) motherboard
    512mb Crucial PC2700 DDR ram
    P4 2.4B ghz processor
    Seagate 60gb ATA100 hard drive
    MSI 52x CDRW
    Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM
Creative Annihilator2 Geforce 2 video card
    Creative SB Live! sound card
    USR 56k external modem.
    Thermaltake 360w power supply

I'm kinda new at this to but I think it goes something like this. Intel rates their FSB *4, so you have a 533 FSB which means 133 * 4 = 533. So if you have it set to 133 your actually running at 533, do you get it, if not I'm sure someone who can explain it better will be along shortly. Good luck!

  • MSI 9600GT..need help with volt mods?

Okay, anybody with an MSI 9600GT (T2D512) have any luck finding volt mods to raise the GPU and/or Memory voltages?  How about it Bosskiller, think you can massage some MSI tech to write me a bios to raise the GPU voltage to 1.3 or 1.4 volts?  I'm only about 2000 3D Mark03/05 points away from top place in that class..but I need more volts!  LOL.    Gigabyte has a software program which raises voltage in the GUI, but unfortunately, it wont work on a non-Gigabyte card:(.  Think you can get 10-20 bios editors to work on that for me??  Hahahah.
    Paul

@Aaron,  cooling is stock MSI "Seaweed" fan..cards run 37-48C max benchmarking (using OCZ feeZe heatpaste compound).
@Frankenputer, yes I know the implications, if I fry the cards..I won't cry about it..
All other users/readers, remember, modding is like gambling..if you cant afford to lose..dont do it!
