MSI 6163 HDD format failure Win2K

Hi, I have a machine with 6163 board eunning Win 2k, change HDD to Maxstor 30GB. Win 2K detects drive, formats NTFS and then announces that the drive is broken or damaged and will not install.
I have tried 3 brand new Maxstor drives, all failed, the smae drives work just fine in other machines (even after failing in this one) I have tried other smaller (20GB) drives, all fail the same.
I have flashed BIOS to v5.6 - no difference.
Is this a sign of a failing HDD controller ? The original drive runs Win2K no problem but even if I try and format a brand new identical drive - it fails.
Any ideas ?

So, XP installed OK, what is differnet? well I used a different CD (XP instead of Win2K) and I also happened to swap around the 24 x cd-writer with a 50x CD drive so that it might install faster.
So, I used a fresh Win2K CD on the 50 x drive, well past the formatting stage now, suspect combination of CD Writer drive and Win2K CD.
Thanks again for your help

  • Problem with a MSI-6163 PRO

Anyone got an idea what kinda problem i have? I have an MSI 6163 PRO motherboard (with latest BIOS update 3.5), a PIII 700 Cuppermine, 3x256 SDRam, i run Win XP Pro, have a 40 gb harddrive and have been running like this for at least 9 months, without any problem. Suddenly it starts to reboot all the time and now i cant even start it not even in fail safe mode, it reboots before i get in.
Its not a Virus, i have virus checked the hardrive, i tryed with a smaller harddrive (6 gb and win 95) and that worked, i bought a new harddrivce (120 gb) Started to format and install Win XP pro and it starts to reboot again, i have tryed chagne memmorys, graphic adapter, net adapter, soundcard everything, i am going nuts! anyone had probs like this??
I would be more than greatfull if anyone has an answer to this.

Thanks a lot Wonkanoby for the help. It didnt help my error but it sure cleared it up. There were several capacitor that leaked, just as the pics on the site you sent  http://www.overclockers.com/tips00140/, it shows clearly on thoose. Cant beleive how that problem can be so big and seems like they are doing nothing about it either.
Well thanks for a great Forum here, and thanks to you Wonkanoby.
The motherboard is dumped... thinking of going back to good old ASUS
    Then its Rock´n Roll agian
    Have a great day.

  • Re: How to restore data after HDD format?

    hi, folks
I need your help to restore some important data that gone after hdd formatting.
I didn't make any backup that was my mistake.
    Everyone's help is appreciated.
    Thanks to all.

    Hi,
it's already late to say but it's always recommended to backup data on the external medias. First of all, don't touch your hard drive, I mean don't format/move partitions. Once, i had the same problem while creating acronis recovery zone on the hard drive. Something gone wrong and I lost some data that I wouldn't mind but I also had some files from webmoney system (its' virtual money that you can exchange for real one). I tried many programs like Ontrack.EasyRecovery.Professional and e.t.c. Only with Power.Data.Recovery software could restore it. note, it's not free but Google can help you

  • Formatting failure!! (ipod photo)

I have an ipod for about 4 months, and it was working fine.
but today I was listening to music and it started to skip between songs. I tried deleting them but when I tried my comp crashed.
I run ipod updater, it asked me to connect my ipod, I did and the updater crashed.
after a few trys I got it to work, I chose Restore, and the updater gave me this:"Formatting failure:Disk Write Error".
    Please help...

Select the pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. In the resulting dialogue set the kind to Jpeg and then you can set the dimensions as you need. Complete the export to the desktop and upload it from there.

  • Formatting failure????

ok, i just read on another forum that the 2006-10-01 updater is crap and sometimes freezes your ipod for good....I had just used this updater to restore my ipod to factory settings, so in a desperate attempt to do this right, I used the previous updater 2005-11-17....
It finished the formatting, but instead of asking me to plug it in for charge to finish it off, it returned to the initial page which asked me to restore it again and when I did it came up with "formatting failure, disc write error"
Can anyone give some piece of advice apart from the 5 steps which I've perfomed endless times and DON'T WORK????
Does anyone else agree that beating the life out of an ipod sets its hard drive into working mode?

  • Formatting failure, disk write error

my 1 and 1/2 year old ipod 20G went into vulcan mind warp, the screen froze up displaying english and other language choices. i have down loaded the most recent update, june of 06 and tried to restore the beast, but half way through the update i get "formatting failure, disk write error". does it ever get better i have tried this restore several times but half way through the down load it dies. how do you get the software to down load to the pod and get the thing back to working order.

thanks for the help. it did not seem to be a fire wire issue as the kids use the same port and wire on there nanos, so i plugged into the ports in the back of the new (2month old) dell computer. the computer did not see the ipod so i plugged it back into the front ports, ran updater, and it ran all the way through, updating the ipod and telling me to pug into an external power source for firmware to update. this is further then i have been able to go in getting the ipod working again. hope it works when i take it off the charger.
    thank you

  • AGP of MSI 6163 Pro (MSI 6163 Ver2)

Hi..wondering if anyone can tell me if msi 6163 Pro (msi 6163 Ver2) can support GF2 Ti Video Card?
Been thinking of getting the Inno3D GF2 Ti Card, but is not able to find info as to whether it will work on it.

and the MSI-6163 v1.0 can support a gf2mx agp card (it's an asus v7100 deluxe)?. I tried to install it but windows98 can't recognise Cd-rom because it says it is a conflict in the bus controller (the exact address is f000-f000f) and it was no way to make it run well. I had to reinstall the old intel740 8mb agp card, and making so the pc become to run properly just like before installing the gf2mx card. Can anyone help me? I'm getting mad about this... :(
P.S. Sorry for the english that maybe it's not quite perfect

    - and PC 100-128M 8*16
Do you have an idea for this problem    ? The mainboard, the memory module, the pentium (pentium III 500)
No overclocking, default configuration, bios has been initialised ...
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi dude !
I have Msi6163 bx master.... This motherboard support copermine.
Yes..it is a big chance that the problem is related to sdram type memory. I personaly have 512MB of sdram (all 4 slots full) I have mixed sdrams... some are 133mhz, some of them are 100mhz. The bus is overclocked to 133mhz from 100mhz so my p3 650 mhz works on 866 since 2001 year without any problem. I have difficulties to find working sdram on this motherboard when i upgraded it with more memory. Some sdram modules didnt work, some of them has been recognized as half of it, boot problems and so go on... I know that in mynual is written whic sdram must be.
I check now on site http://www.crucial.com/  for the answer for your problem. I found this:
These 168-pin DIMM modules are compatible with your system.:

  • Msi 6163 Pro

Does anyone could help me, were i could buy the msi 6163 Pro motherboard for replacement of my old one which was totally crash because some of its resistor were damage.  I'm not sure if the cause was overheat, or the board might be defective.  But I still like this board more than the other. 8)

Only with great luck as a used board from a computer shop.
They were not in production for about 3 years now.

  • Opinion of New HDD Formatting

Does anyone write zeros to your new HDDs? I typically have always done this with brand new HDDs but just curious if there's any benefit to it anymore?
Putting a new HDD in today and wondering if I should just do it (I don't mind at all) or just do the basic "erase" and format and Mac OS...

Indeed there are benefits. First, the drive is received prepped for a different operating system and a different partition mapping scheme. You don't know when sectors may have soft errors even when factory new.
When the drive is new take the time to do a Zero Data single pass. It's worth the extra time to prevent future problems that can include the failure of the drive to properly boot the computer or be seen as bootable. Zeroing the data is not a "stress test." It is a verification of the integrity of the drive and will repair or map out sector errors and remove any data on the platters that may prove a problem. It's not just a security precaution.

  • 975X Platinum PUE - Crashes and HDD formatting trouble.

I just purchased a new rig:
    MSI Platinum Power Up Edition
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4
    PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 XT
    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
    Antec TruePower Trio 650W PSU
Now, I set it all up, plugged everything in and i'm having a lot of troubles.
When i boot from windows XP CD and try to format the HDD, the bar fills to 100% and I constantly get the error message:
Setup was unable to format the disk. The drive may be damaged.
Check it is plugged in and turned on a bla bla bla.
I get this with multiple hard disks, (1xEIDE and 2xSATA), i know they are working, I was able to take one to work and format/scandisk it with no errors.
Also sometimes I will instead get a Blue Screen of Death when setup is attempting to run. No details, just a STOP message.
My only slight concerns setting up the MB were
    1) The ATX 12V Power Connector (this supplies power to the CPU), will fit either a 4-pin or 8-pin plug from the power supply, and mine has both. Wasn't sure which one to use (if it matters)
    2) The ATX 12V Power Connector (for supplying power to the graphics card), since the graphics card has its own power socket built in does the slot on the motherboard need power too? It currently doesnt i didnt want to risk over powering it and damaging it)
They may not matter, but i could use clarification anyway.
Can anyone advise me as to whats up? Or help me to narrow down?
(I ran Memtest86+ with no errors)
Ive no floppy drive at the moment so i'm having trouble finding diagnosis software for a cd.
Its causing me a great deal of grief.

What BIOS Version are you using?
What memory voltage did you set in BIOS?
Run memtest to check if your modules are operating properly.
BIOS is version 6.00 - default straight out of the box.
Memory Voltage is set to 1.8v
Ive run Memtest86+, left it going overnight it managed 8 cycles with no errors.
(I'm curious if it will ever end by itself or just keep going constantly?)

BIOS:  Presume you are using failsafe Bios settings except for the memory.
PLS set your CL4 settings to the same as I have in my description - at least initially  - even though it may run fine on yours.
I've tried optimized and failsafe defaults and neither will work.
    Memory settings were set to default too (1:1.25, Mem@667MHz), I've now changed the settings manually to 1.5 - 800MHz, 5-4-4-12 @ 1.9v

    1) Does it post ok every time?  Or do you have problems???
Does the post show the HDDs?
Posts fine every time, all hard drives are shown.

    2) HDD & IDE CONNECTIONS & BIOS INFO:  (Presume no RAID)
2a) IDE:  Where is the CD plugged in - the blue (Intel)  or the yellow (JMicron) slot?
and where is the IDE HDD plugged in??
The CD is SATA and is plugged into SATA1, BIOS displays it as IDE Third Master. (I have tried an IDE CD-ROM Drive as Primary Master, plugged into the blue socket again)
The IDE HDD is plugged into the BLUE IDE socket, BIOS shows it as Primary Master
I have temporarily unplugged the other two SATA HDD's to avoid accidental damage.

2b) Where are the SATA HDDs plugged in?
How about disconnecting all but one of the SATA drives - and plug it in to the SATA 1.
    Quote from: k2again on 31-March-07, 14:18:57
2c) What are the settings you have in the BIOS for the integrated peripherals?
For example, is the JMicron Disabled?
    Onboard VIA6308 - Enabled
    Onboard JMB361 - Disabled
Onboard Intel Lan Boot ROM - Disabled
IDE HDD Block Mode - Disabled (tried Enabled as well)
    PCI IDE BusMaster - Disabled
On-Chip Primary PCI IDE - Enabled
IDE Primary Master/Slave PIO - Auto
IDE Primary Master/Slave UDMA - Auto
    SATA Mode - IDE
On-Chip Serial ATA - Enhanced Mode
SATA Port Speed Settings - Disabled

Did u have a plastic bit over the CPU 8 pin plug so u could only see 4?
SO; which did u plug in ?
It did have the plastic plug over 4 slots, I removed it and plugged in the 8-pin connection.

Make sure u plug in the 4 prong rectangular plug (similar to the CD power connector) to the graphics PS.
I have a connector labelled PCI-E on my PSU which is plugged directly into the GFX card, and the 4-pin CD-ROM Power Connector plugged into the MB just above the GFX Card Socket.

  • SATA HDD FORMAT ISSUES TRACED BACK TO Neo4 Platinum?

    Hi everyone,
I have just built a new computer with the specs below, and I can not get the machine to properly format the harddrives. I have two SATA WD 200 gig (series 1) Hdd's that I have been trying to format, but they freeze up in windows format. Lifeguard (WD) formatted the drives fine in quick, but froze up on normal NTFS. I have tried all combinations on the native 4 sata spots, and even tried just using one hdd. I also tried my friends Seagate 300 gig sata and found it froze up during file install on Windows MCE 2005. Therefore, it does not look like it's the drives, but rather a communication with the motherboard. I have made sure that the bios had the "allow larger hdd sizes" checked, but yet did not help the problem.
I am hoping that some of you have come across this problem, as I am all out of ideas. I tried to update the bios from 1.1 to 1.8 but recieved a weird error of "source file not found". I am hoping it's a BIOs Issue becaue I am all out of ideas on this and 1.1 is extremely old compared to 1.8. Hopefully it's not a bad board.
(DRIVES ARE LOCATED on 3 and 4 slot)

500 Watt Power supply By Ultra X-Connect
    * I read the FAQ on this issue, however my BIOs tells me that if I only have 1 HDD installed and try the Raid Trick, it says "not enough HDDS". I for sure do not want a RAID system for my two drives.
    * I have also tried the floopy's as well that came with the board and literally an option I could think of. The only thing I have not done is updated the BIOS.
    * I also found this forum thread located on your site with the same issue (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=58990.0)

Thank you so much for a quick reply
I have brand new OEM Media Center 2005 (2 cd) setup set. I would think that it would?

  • Got a USB External HDD, formatted as FAT32 cannot delete some files off it

I have a backup HDD that I use, its formatted as FAT, so I can use it on my Mac Leopard and a Win XP machine. All works fine.
However when in Leopard I try to delete certain folder/files, it pops up and asks for my Admin username and password, type in in, you hear a "clunk" as if its going to trash, but doesn't go and stays on the USB HDD. Not all files/folders do this, some go no problems, other not.
I have repaired permission on my Mac HD, verified the USB disk etc, but nothing.
how can I delete some folders off please
    cheers

no one please? I cant seem to crack this one, its frustrating...

  • Problem with formatting failure caption...

This might be a bug or a bad Captivate file.
Project file (one of 17) has sucess and failure captions. Set the Failure as adobe red/ verdana 12.
On day 1 I do this and all is well.
On day 3 I open this file and find the failure caption set to adobe red with a yellow highlight behind the text.
Checked the preferences for the project file. Set to adobe red/verdana 12
On the specific failure text I choose edit preference to deselect the yellow highlight
    Change to white-no luck
    Change to "None"-no luck
Change to something other than yellow-accepted  but now the new color is "locked" and cannot be reverted to the yellow.
I'n new at triaging Captivate issues. Thinking about opening the backup file or fetching a copy from my archives on the premise that this individual file is corrupt. I'd really not want to have to recreate from scratch.
    Any thoughts would be helpful.

    It's really very simple.
In Captivate go to File > Export > Project Captions and Closed Captions > Name it > Open resulting Word Doc, it will look like this:
The column on the right, outlined in red, titled "Updated Text Cation Data", is the one you will need to update
In Word (not sure which version you have, this is 07) open the Find and Replace tool.  Instead of entering text, click the button labeled "Format" then choose "Font".
Another dialog box will open, "Find Font".
Enter in the current font info, including the color red as that will separate the failure captions from all the rest easily in Word.  Then click inside the Replace With field and again click the Format Button and repeat the font process, now entering in the Bold that you desire.
Now, you can either click replace all (you run the risk of changing captions you didn't want to, though choosing red should eliminate that and worked in my test) or replace them one by one so you're sure you only change the ones you intend to.
Once you finish save and close the document with it's original name.  Then in Captivate simply import the Captions back in (File > Import > Project Captions and Closed Captions) and viola, you're all set.
Have a good night and good luck in the morning.  I figured I'd throw this out there in case I'm tied up tomorrow.  If you already knew maybe someone else can benefit.
