  • Problem with a MSI-6163 PRO

Anyone got an idea what kinda problem i have? I have an MSI 6163 PRO motherboard (with latest BIOS update 3.5), a PIII 700 Cuppermine, 3x256 SDRam, i run Win XP Pro, have a 40 gb harddrive and have been running like this for at least 9 months, without any problem. Suddenly it starts to reboot all the time and now i cant even start it not even in fail safe mode, it reboots before i get in.
Its not a Virus, i have virus checked the hardrive, i tryed with a smaller harddrive (6 gb and win 95) and that worked, i bought a new harddrivce (120 gb) Started to format and install Win XP pro and it starts to reboot again, i have tryed chagne memmorys, graphic adapter, net adapter, soundcard everything, i am going nuts! anyone had probs like this??
I would be more than greatfull if anyone has an answer to this.

Thanks a lot Wonkanoby for the help. It didnt help my error but it sure cleared it up. There were several capacitor that leaked, just as the pics on the site you sent  http://www.overclockers.com/tips00140/, it shows clearly on thoose. Cant beleive how that problem can be so big and seems like they are doing nothing about it either.
Well thanks for a great Forum here, and thanks to you Wonkanoby.
The motherboard is dumped... thinking of going back to good old ASUS
    Then its Rock´n Roll agian
    Have a great day.

  • AGP of MSI 6163 Pro (MSI 6163 Ver2)

Hi..wondering if anyone can tell me if msi 6163 Pro (msi 6163 Ver2) can support GF2 Ti Video Card?
Been thinking of getting the Inno3D GF2 Ti Card, but is not able to find info as to whether it will work on it.

and the MSI-6163 v1.0 can support a gf2mx agp card (it's an asus v7100 deluxe)?. I tried to install it but windows98 can't recognise Cd-rom because it says it is a conflict in the bus controller (the exact address is f000-f000f) and it was no way to make it run well. I had to reinstall the old intel740 8mb agp card, and making so the pc become to run properly just like before installing the gf2mx card. Can anyone help me? I'm getting mad about this... :(
P.S. Sorry for the english that maybe it's not quite perfect

  • My Msi 6163 Pro doesn't boot !

I change the motherboard Msi 6163 Pro of my old PC but it doesn't boot !!
The diagnostic leds are 1010 (Green Red Green Red) : Testing Base and extended memory ... (from 240k to 640k and above 1Mb)
I test 4 different memory modules on this motherboard : they can't all be out of order ....
    - I test PC 100-128 SDRAM 16*8
    - and PC 100-128M 8*16
Do you have an idea for this problem    ? The mainboard, the memory module, the pentium (pentium III 500)
No overclocking, default configuration, bios has been initialised ...
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi dude !
I have Msi6163 bx master.... This motherboard support copermine.
Yes..it is a big chance that the problem is related to sdram type memory. I personaly have 512MB of sdram (all 4 slots full) I have mixed sdrams... some are 133mhz, some of them are 100mhz. The bus is overclocked to 133mhz from 100mhz so my p3 650 mhz works on 866 since 2001 year without any problem. I have difficulties to find working sdram on this motherboard when i upgraded it with more memory. Some sdram modules didnt work, some of them has been recognized as half of it, boot problems and so go on... I know that in mynual is written whic sdram must be.
I check now on site http://www.crucial.com/  for the answer for your problem. I found this:
These 168-pin DIMM modules are compatible with your system.:
    128MB sdrams: (crucial)
    SDRAM, PC100 • CL=2 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 100MHz • 3.3V • 16Meg x 64
    SDRAM, PC133 • CL=2 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz • 3.3V • 16Meg x 64
    SDRAM, PC133 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • Non-parity • 133MHz • 3.3V • 16Meg x 64
    SDRAM, PC100 • CL=2 • Unbuffered • ECC • 100MHz • 3.3V • 16Meg x 72

  • USB on MSI 6163

What type of USB is there on the 6163 motherboard, 1.0 or 1.1

Wonkanoby is correct about the 9th wire, you need eight wires. Wonkanoby is referring to a wire going to the #10 hole, if using a connector block, to the #10 pin. The 9th wire Wonkanoby is refferring to is the same wire, #10 position, to which you are referring. Here's a response I've given in several posts about this issue:

Check to see if there is a wire running from your Front USB ports to the #10 slot of your USB block which connects to the motherboard header.
USB connector block layout which corresponds to the pin layout on boards with the Intel spec for USB. Do not cut the pin on the MOBO. You are removing/cutting the wire to the connector block from the case.
    2 4 6 8 10(this wire, #10, not needed)
    1 3 5 7 9(filled/key)
If you find a wire leading to the #10 spot on the block, remove that wire. My block has tabs so that you can pull the wire out, or you could snip/cut the wire leading to that position--if you cut the wire, be careful to cut the correct one and cut it in such a way that it may be repaired if you make a mistake.  Make sure you wrap the wire, the exposed end/s, you remove/cut with electrical tape so as not to accidentally cause a short. I actually folded the wire back and wrapped it.

This seems to be a common issue involving many different case manufacturers. I don't know how it applies to other MOBO manufacturers, but in these forums it is not limited to a specific MSI model or supported chipset(Intel or AMD).
Edit: Thanks Bagmaster. I corrected the layout. The important thing is that the #10 spot is touching the filled in keyed #9 position.

  • MSI 6163 HDD format failure Win2K

Hi, I have a machine with 6163 board eunning Win 2k, change HDD to Maxstor 30GB. Win 2K detects drive, formats NTFS and then announces that the drive is broken or damaged and will not install.
I have tried 3 brand new Maxstor drives, all failed, the smae drives work just fine in other machines (even after failing in this one) I have tried other smaller (20GB) drives, all fail the same.
I have flashed BIOS to v5.6 - no difference.
Is this a sign of a failing HDD controller ? The original drive runs Win2K no problem but even if I try and format a brand new identical drive - it fails.
    Any ideas ?

So, XP installed OK, what is differnet? well I used a different CD (XP instead of Win2K) and I also happened to swap around the 24 x cd-writer with a 50x CD drive so that it might install faster.
So, I used a fresh Win2K CD on the 50 x drive, well past the formatting stage now, suspect combination of CD Writer drive and Win2K CD.
    Thanks again for your help

  • 512 PC133 + MSI 6163 Pro help

Hello. I still use a msi6163 Pro MoBo and I just bought a 512 Mb PC133 SDRAM module (Kingmax MPGC23S-38KT3). The problem is that the MoBo only "sees" 256Mb of it. I only have available DIMM slots 2 & 3 because of a (relatively huge) TITAN cooler mounted on the Slot1 adapter. The CPU is a 566@707 Mhz OC Celeron. My intention was to upgrade the system, because it ran flawlessly for years and I am very fond of it  .
I want to know if there is a posibility to make the board see all the 512 Mb of the SDRAM module. Thank you.

in your case it cannot take ram that big

  • Capacitor fire on MSI 6163 Pro Ver:2

The capacitor in question is the largest one on the board and was wondering if anybody has an idea as to why this happened? The board is approx 3 years old and never gave us any problems in the past.Average case temp was 28-30 C and CPU was not overclocked.Sounded like firecrackers going off when it failed and took her CPU,RAM,and PS with it!! 8o

  • Is my MSI-6163 Pro dead ?

    Hello all
Suddenly, she does not want to boot anymore, it is hard to diagnostic: the 4 LEDS are G/R/G/R but without any other colors before (it should begin by R/R/R/R no ?)
This code means "Testing memory" failed, so I tried with each of my three's in stand-alone, and boot is the same ...
    Please HELP !!!!

    Hi Fredrik
PSU was an OREX PFC-300A (max 300W 12V/16A) and already try with a FSP280 (max 280W 12V/16A) and still G/R/G/R at boot
Concerning the powerful FX , after the crash I've put it on actual PC, and now the videocard is an old Quadro4-380XGL (like GeForce4 series) without power-supply, power comes from AGP bus.
And Yes I confirm: all the fans turn right ...
I am going to watch the electronc components  difficult
    Bye and thanks all

  • SCSI boot on 6163 Pro ?

    Hello guys
I am not very strong in hardware, but I know SCSI disks are speeder than IDE and SATA ones (but more expensive too ...), so I have a little question :
In the BIOS of my old MSI 6163 Pro (2.0), for the BOOT SEQUENCE option, there is the choice SCSI? Does-it mean I can replace my old IDE 20Go and have a SCSI, with the system on it, and bootable ?
    Thanks in advance.
    $martiz

The only thing I can think of is that the adapter card was needed and the option is in BIOS then it should boot from that drive. I have not looked yet but what does the manual say?
Edit: I just browsed the manual and you just need to set it to the boot sequence you want to use. There are quite a few options so use the one best suited to your needs and it should be OK from there.
One of these I imagine would be the best options since they are the only ones that give you SCSI as 1st boot device: SCSI,A,C or SCSI,C,A
