Msi-6366 + Lg Dvd Rw

Greetings, just for your information, I have encountered and solved a problem installing the LG GSA-4120B 12X Super Multi DVD Rewriter in a MSI-6366 system.  The problem was that I was unable to read or write any kind of DVD, at the same time I was able to read and write CDR and CDRW.  The system would lock up until the DVD was ejected or the system was rebooted.
The solution was to replace the VIA IDE Bus Mastering Driver (4-in-1) with the standard Microsoft IDE Driver.
No responses required.
Les.

Thanks for your info.

  • PC does not boot from MSI DR4-A DVD drive

    Hi,
I've just bought a NetVista P4 1.6-256MB-40GB PC with an IBM branded LG CDROM. Booted fine from the CDROM drive.
I've replaced it with an MSI DR4-A DVD+/-RW drive, but I am unable to boot from it. It is the only drive on the 2nd IDE flatcable, and set as master. I've tried a new IDE cable as well, to make sure it wasn't a cable problem, no luck.
The DVD drive is recognised in the BIOS, IDE 0 is the 40GB harddisk, and IDE 2 is the CD/DVD-ROM. IDE 1 and 3 are not installed.
However there is no way I can get the system to boot from CD (or actually the DVD drive).
Windows XP is starting up fine as well from harddisk. It recognises the IDE/ATAPI DVD drive, says its enabled and all good. A drive name is assigned to it (E:, the Primary and Secondary IDE devices in the device manager list seem all to be fine).
However when I put a CD (Audio or Data) in it, it just says no volume, enter disc. Basically I can't use it to boot, nor can I use it once the OS is up and running. If I put the MSI DVD writer back in my external firewire case and connect to it, it works fine.
Have deleted and reinstalled the IDE/ATAPI driver without success. I've installed the latest IBM NetVista BIOS version 46AUS (of april 2004), but that had no effect either.
Any ideas? Or is the drive just incompatible with the IBM NetVista PC?
    Regards,
    Niels Roskam

Test the CDROM in another system and see if there's any problem.
Try setting it as Master drive using the jumper even if it's a Single drive on the IDE controller.

  • MSI DR16-B DVD-RW Drive, any good?

Is this drive any good? I like MSI technology, i have an MSI motherboard, an MSI graphics card and an MSI CD-RW drive, i want to purchase two of these MSI DR16-B DVD-RW drives for a new system i'm building.

    Hi Commander Sinclair
Babylon 5 is the greatest sci-fi show ever! "Sooner or later, everyone comes to Babylon 5."
Have a look to this site for more detailed info and hints about a DVD writer (http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2260). As they say, "setting a booktype (bitsetting) is just the process of telling your burner to convert a DVD+R disc "virtually" into a DVD-ROM instead. This feature is important for some people who have older set-top DVD players that cannot recognize the "bit" that determines what type of DVD media is sitting in the drive". Many just don't care, but if movies are your first goal, well, maybe you'll find it an interesting option.
And yes, you're right: much better not to mess with firmwares. Anyway, don't worry too much: I can burn and play my favourite movies even with my not-so-up-to-date DRA-8.
    Stay tuned.

Ah, a Babylon 5 fan, excellent, thanks for the post, i'm not interested in flashing the firmware and i don't know what this booktype thing is, all i want to do is burn DVD's but i guess with all the advancements in technology, it won't be as simple as that.
    Thanks Ambassador G'Kar (i know it's not the name you're using) :D

  • Linux and MSI KT4 Ultra : DVD problems

Hi, I own an MSI KT4 Ultra Pure mobo.  The vt8235 Southbridge is supported in the lastest version of the Linux Kernel, 2.4.20 . After upgrading the kernel all seems to work fine, but when the system try to initialize my hdc (Secondary master of IDE, a DVD reader DV-5800A from NEC) it locks up with the message :
    hdc: device {Busy}
hdc: drive not ready for command
    ide1: reset success!!
and start looping with this message.
What can I do to get work my DVD Reader? With my precedent MoBo it works perfectly
    Thanks
    Bye

Hmmm that error used to happen with an older kernel and an ALI chipset. If you leave it long enough does it give up trying and continue to boot? The ALI did this eventualy.

  • MSi GE620 058 DVD Eject button problem

    Hello,
I recently got this awesome MSi Notebook, the GE620 058, not the i7 one. Everything works fine exept the eject button for the dvd/cd drive.
I have to do alot of installing games and programs so it would be much faster to use the button instead of the ''eject drive option'' and i got the S-Bar program installed and running.
Can you guys help me with this please?

  • MSI GE60 2PE DVD Drive problem

Hello. I've bought a new GE60 2PE for Christmas and today I received it. After installing Windows 8 I inserted the Driver's CD that comes with the laptop and everything worked fine, I installed the LAN (Killer) drivers. A few minutes later I tried to install more drivers but to my surprise the computer couldn´t read the CD anymore. I tried to reinstall windows but the problem is still there.
    Any advice?

I've cleaned the lens again and look like this time it worked. I'll keep the post updated if it starts to fail again.

  • DVD RW Compatibility for MSI MEGA651

Can anyone recommend a DVD Re Writer for use with an MSI 651? Will all MSI optical drives work as a CD player in HiFi mode? As far as I can tell DVD playback doesn't work in HiFI mode. Currently got an ancient Sanyo 32x cd ROM in mine, which doesn't play in HiFi mode, so want to be sure i'm upgrading with the right part....

All MSI optical drives will work fine, but that does not mean that other drives will not.

Q: Do I need a MSI propierarty CD/DVD-Rom player to be able to use the MegaPC as offline hifi station?
A: Probably not, MSI likes you to believe you do need something special though.
    The problem is twofold:
    1. The eject button sends a signal over the IDE cable that tells the drive to eject. The problem isn't in the sending to the drive, but receiving info from the drive (like status info, etc.). The VENDOR_IDs differs and every vendor uses different commands.
    2. The MP3 playing part
The Bluebird VL+ handles both actions. Please be sure you have the latest version installed!

  • MSI Drivers and Utilities DVD won't work

Hello, I've just purchased the parts to construct an entirely new computer, and I've chosen MSI Z77A-G41 motherboard.  I put everything together, and I loaded Win XP on, and my plan is to upgrade to Win 8 during their special offer.  I needed to go into Setup and change the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE, so that I could install XP. Once I had XP up and running, I inserted the MSI Drivers and Utilities DVD to load all of the drivers.  However, when I put the disc in, it auto-runs, the driver/utility screen is shown 'blacked out' and I immediately receive a Windows error message: "DVD Setup Application" error.  I went in through Windows Explorer to the programs on the DVD, and found DVD setup. By trying to run this from within Explorer, it takes me to the same error as when I auto-run.
The only thing I can think of is that I need to change something else in Setup, to run Win XP because it's so old?  I'm pretty sure that there's nothing wrong with the new DVD burner, because I've used it to install XP, and also to extract and install Service Pack 2 and 3 (which I downloaded on another computer and transferred on a CD).  If I knew exactly what needed to be installed from the MSI DVD, I could try doing it from within Windows Explorer.  But, I'd still like to figure out what the Setup Application error message is telling me.
Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

A further note before I head off to bed.  I was able to install Win XP service packs 2 and 3 using my new burner, and I've activated with Microsoft and downloaded and installed 117 updates. I have now used this same DVD burner that won't recognize or work with the MSI driver/utilities DVD, to install all of the drivers for my video card---that DVD auto-ran just fine.  So, after doing some searches on Google about the "DVD Setup Application" error, not a lot of help but most people say that if another DVD will spin up and load things OK---it must be the fault of the DVD that won't load.  In other words, I don't think that there's a problem with anything in the Setup on the motherboard.
So, if anyone has any further ideas, please let me know.  Otherwise, I'm going to contact MSI tomorrow and see about a replacement DVD. Thanks.

  • DR-8a wont play written dvd's!!!!!!

I've just bought this drive, before i had a ricoh 2.4+r drive, and have written a few discs using it. These discs for some reason will not open or play using the DR-8A. (strange). it plays cd's fine and pre-recorded dvd's fine but just won't play anything created with my old drive. I know these discs are fine as they have played in other dvd-roms and on dvd-players. Thought it could be a firmware issue but havn't seen any firmware upgrades as yet. Have posted query to MSI TWICE but still no reply.
    ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS?

After burning data to a rw disk, which the software says has been successful, the bloody drive will not see the disk, nevermind it's contents...Keeps telling me there is no disk in the drive. It appears that I have no Access to three dvd-rw disks now!!!. I'll be interested to see if there are any other problems with this drive, cause if it doesn't start doing it's job quickly..It's going back!!

  • DVD DR8-A2

Hi I’m having a problem with my DVD burner
    My pc is
    Athlon 64 3200+
    Msi k8t neo
    Xp pro
    SP2
I purchased an msi dr8-a2 DVD burner and I have 2 problems with it. first all DVD’s it makes at some point when playing the movie back lock up (The picture freezes). The second problem is the speed the DVD burns at it will burn at 2.4*.
    Things I have tried
I went in to device manager and it called the drive an  ATAPI  DVD  RW  8*MAX
I double clicked on it to give me properties then went in to details and is said
    IDE\CDROMATAPI_DVD_RW_8*MAX_____________150D___\5&211F198B&0&0.0.0
I THEN WENT ON TO MSI WEB SITE TO DOWNLOAD THE LATEST FIRMWARE
Went in to download optical storage
    Then optical storage firmware
    Then DVD Duel drive firmware
Looked down the list until I found the DR8-A2 then downloaded the file called DR8A2_150D
Then made a boot floppy and put the files in and restarted the pc the pc booted from the floppy and run the software.
Executed dvflash_scr.bin  it gave me 2 choices  1) dvd rw  2) cdrw  so I went with choice 1 DVD.
IT THEN TOLD ME “THIS FILE IS NOT SUPPORT FOR DEVICE”
SO I HAVE AN MSI DVD RW (DR8_A2) I GO TO THE MSI WEB SITE DOWNLOAD THE DR8_A2 SOFTWARE AND I GET BACK AN ERROR THIS IS NOT SUPPORT FOR DEVICE.
SO WHAT IS IT WHEN I’M SURE I DON’T KNOW
    Helppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi there
both your problems are likely to depend on the media you used. Depending on the DVD brand you may have a different DVD speed and a DVD8x will be sometimes burnt at 4x or 2.4X. This is not that bad, expecially if you have an old DVD player, which may not accept DVds burnt at the highest speed.
Concerning the picture freeze you noticed, well, sometimes it happens when you didn't remove properly the dvd "protections"...
And pay attention to the firmware upgrade, it's somewhat risky.
    Ciao

  • MSI MEGA PC parts

Hello, I just got a MSI mega pc and I was wondering what i needed to buy to make it work. I heard you can only buy msi made optical drives to work in the multimedia mode, is that true? I bought a MSI D16 16x dvd drive, would that work? I can't seem to find the cdrw-dvd combo drive anywhere yet, do you have a link for that? I can't find a good tv tuner card either, I saw a msi mega tv tuner card and also 2 tv anywhere cards from msi, which one should I get? And which video card should I get? I'm looking at the msi vtdr-5600 because it is cool and quiet, which is good for the mini pc, but I don't really need a tv in if I'm going to get a tv tuner, do I? Thanks

Hey, thanks for the reply, so i should be able to use any cd drive to work the cd player and mp3 right? Since i don't need the video in if i'm getting the tv card, what video card should i get? I want something that I can play games on but also quiet and not too hot, any suggestions? I also bought corsair 512 pc3200 memory, the MEGA only uses 2700 i think, will the pc3200 work with it? Can i also put a 2.4 800mhz bus hypertreaded cpu and use it at 2.4? The MEGA only has a 533 bus, which hyperthreaded cpu's can be used? Thanks

  • Problem with burned DVD on DR8-A

    Hi everybody,
    I have a strange problem.
If you could help me it will be great.
I burned a Memorex 8x DVD+R on my DR8-A at 4x speed. This works fine.
So after i look my DVD in Windows Explorer and it shows me the all the files ( i have twenty video files of 200 MO each) of my burned DVD. But i can only access to the 10 first ones. I see the others but i can't copy them to hardrive, i can't  launch them with Windows Media Player (they are movie files).
    My PC configuration is :
    ASUS A7V8X
    AMD Athlon XP 2400+
    512 MB RAM
    80 GB MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 9 7200rpm IDE, 8Mb
    120 GB MAXTOR DiamondMax Plus 9 7200rpm IDE, 8Mb
    Leadtek Winfast A280 LTD
    MEMOREX 16x DVD player
    MSI DRA-8 DVD writer.
    Windows 98 SE

You can use Nero CD-DVD Speed Utility to check if you have the disc burnt properly.

  • MSI DR8-A2 Wont write 8x -R medias

    Hi
I recently bought a MSI DR8-A2 DVD writer, in order to write with 8x on DVD's and not just 4x, i even bought the writer in a foreign country in order to get the A2 model and not just the DR8-A model
After reading the support media list for my drive, i was under the impression that my writer would be able to write 8x on the quality media Datasafe Datawrite Classic DVD-R 8x (the grey ones) (among other things i red the review here http://www.dvd-recordable.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=85) since they also produce the ritek medias
however when writing 8x to the medias, they are almost unusable, the acess times are enormous, and often it cant even gain acess to folder with more than 100 files, it just freezes until the dvd has been taken out, and when i backup dvd-movies normal dvd players cant play the dvd, nor can my DVD-ROM or the DR8-A2 dirve for that matter
these errors are typical when you burn a cd on too high a rate, say you try to write 40x on a 1-24x cd-r, therefore i assume that the problem is the same here with the dvd's
in support of this theory i have no problems, whatsoever, writing 4x on the very same Datawrite medias, resulting in a perfect access time for the dvds, and the ability to play it on even old dvd-drives
Is it really true, that one of the most reputable DVD-media brands aren't supported by this writer, in that case i fear i made the wrong buy, since the specific medias of the supported-media-list are impossible to procure where i come from

Is this supposed to be an official forum for MSI ... nothing ever happends here, and only half of the posts are answered, i've had tonnes of problem with this drive as of now, and if this is supposed to be the "helpline" for as big a company as MSI, then it has turned out to be as disappointing as the drive itself, i'm not asking for a lot, just a simple answer to my question

  • Dr8-a Contact Msi

There are many posts regarding the odd behaviour of the DR8-A. I have contacted MSI directly at [email protected] and await their reply. Everyone who has the No CD, Bad Writing, Poor DVD etc, problems should do the same. It is too easy to purchase an alternative supplier. In my 20 years experience with the PC industry it has been all too common for manufacturers of both Hardware and Software to use the Public as a "test bed" for their products, saving them money in Research & Development.
    Stand your corner fellows
    Steve

    Hi:
My DR8-A is also behaving strangley:
Last May I purchased a brand new MSI DR8-A DVD Rewriter, Up to a couple of weeks ago this burner was functioning properly with little or no problems.
About 2 weeks ago, I started experiencing error notifications when burning DVD-R's:
    I am using Nero Recode 2 - Nero 6
The error massages are as follows:
    1. Track Followinig error - Occurs when the Lead-IN process is started.
After this error notification, a burning failure message is displayed and the disk is ejected.
The ejected disk is unasable after this error. When I re-insert the disk in the DR8-A burner it is not recognized as a DVD-R disk.
Out of 25 DVD-R disk, this error occurs about 10 times but the frequency of this error is increasing.
    2.  Power Calibration error - Occurs when Lead-IN process is started.
After this error notification, a burning failure message is displayed and the disk is ejected.
Unlike with the other error the Blank DVD-R is not damaged and sometimes when I repeat the burn operation, the DVD-R is burned without any problems, at other times the error keep recurring.
The DVD-R media that I am using is Datawrite Red (V3) 4v DVD-R.
Last thursday I updated the firmware version for the DR8-A to version 1.5 and the errors still keep recurring.
I considered changing the media type, but it does not make much sence since I have been using this type of media for 3 months and I never had any problems.  Nevertheless I changed the media to Traxdata 4x DVDR, till now I burnt 2 DVD's and no error occurred.
I also noted that the burnt surface of the Datawrite media is not smooth or (putting it in other words) even in consistency while that on the Traxdata media is perfect.  Could it be that the Datawrite brand's quality is deteriorating? Or is it a DR8-A Symptom?
This problem isbecoming pathetic and I am am wasting a lot of Brand new DVD-R's.
    These are my system specs.
    Intel P4 - 1.5GHz
    512Mbytes Ram
    40Gbytes HD - System Disk  - Master on IDE0
    200Gbytes HD - Data Disk    - Slave on IDE0
Pioneer DVD Reader             -  Master on IDE1
    MSI DR8-A DVD-Rw              -  Slave on IDE1
    OS - Windows XP Pro - SP2.

  • MSI GT70 2PE-1620 Recovery problems (no F3 recovery)

    Hi,
I'm the proud owner of e new MSI GT70 2PE-1620. But now I have some serious problems restoring Windows 8.1 back on it.
This GT70 has 3 SSD disk, in super RAID 0. For some reason the RAID failed and I to restore the RAID setup again. Which was successful. However my C partition was cleared. Now I have trouble resetting back the GT70 back to the factory setting, because the F3 function during startup does not function. The hidden partition with the MSI recovery files are still there: on the second disk (1 TB disk). I checked using Acronis Disk Manager.
I tried restoring back with a Windows disk (ISO download from the internet), but then I miss all my MSI tools and drivers. I do not have a MSI recovery CD/DVD disk.
Please help me to restore this GT70 back to its factory setting.
Secondly: can somebody tell me what the BIOS settings should be (factory setting) for this GT70. Ex.: should the boottype be UEFI or Legacy?

I've found a share which might be helpful.
    Try this:
    1. Run the command prompt as administrator.
    2. Type "reagentc /info" and press enter to check the recovery image location and you should see it shows 0 as null.
    3. Type "diskpart" and "list disk" to check your drives.
    4. Select the HDD drive where your hidden partition is locate. Type "select disk X" (X is the disk of you HDD)
    5. Type "list partition" to find your hidden partition. (You'll need the partition name for the recovery directory later.
    6. Type "exit" to exit the diskpart, then enter "reagentc /setosimage /path \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk1\partition4\RecoveryImage\ /index 1"
(*Note: 1. The harddisk1 is the drive name of your HDD, where your hidden is locate. 2. partition4 is the partition name of your hidden partition you read from step5.)
After setting up, you can use the windows recovery to do the system restore.
This should be able to help you restore to the factory settings.
*You can only choose the option to restore your whole system, so please backup all your files before doing the restore.
Thanks! I will give this a try. I will you know if this worked. One question before I try this:
Will this help me restore to the SDD disk? The hidden partition with the restore files is on a 1TB disk. Originally drive D: in Windows. The SSD disk should be C:, the boot disk with the OS.
    ** UPDATE:
I booted using a USB HD with recovery Windows files, and open up the cmd window. It tried, but it can not find or recognize the "reagentc" command. What am I missing?
