MSI - 648 CD-Rom Errors

Question

Hi
I'm having trouble using any cd-rom or cd-rw drives
with my MSI - 648 board.
First I was unable to install XP (boot from xp install disk).
Then I loaded the default values into the BIOS and I was then able to install it.
But I am always getting events like this:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0
and
An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation.
And the system stops responding. (Reset or power off...)
The errors get even worse when I plugg in my Plextor 40/12/40U USB 2.0 drive. (Actually can not use it..)
I have tried another Cd drive but with no luck.
If I plugg these drives into another computer then they
work well...
Any Ideas?

Answer 1

Primary is DMA mode 5.
Secondary device 1 was PIO, changed it to DMA Mode 2.
(Shutdown power off, 1 min -> restart....)
Tried to read a big 400 MB file from a CD disk in the Plextor USB drive, got about 50 errors in the event log and then the system locked up....
Found out that if I unplug it from the USB connector then my system recoverd.....
I have tried the plextor drive in many othe comp with USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 and it always works.......
Im going to install a PCI card with USB 2.0 and see if
I can use it...
