Msi 6712 KT4VL no sound
Hello everyone, I have just built my first ever system :-
KT4VL 6712 MOBO
AMD XP2400+
INNO Savage2000 Graphics(tempory card till I can get a Radeon)
Windows 98se
and was pleasantly surprissed to find that nearly everything worked ok :P , apart from two things ;( they are:
1) the AC97 sounds doesn't produce any system sounds, game sounds or wav.It does however play audio CD's.The Control panel/ mutimedia/ Audio settings are greyed out where you select the device, but AC97 is listed in the device list and windows says it's drivers are active ? any ideas how to get some sound ?
2)the second one is my pci Flex v90 56k modem doesn't work, but this might be a windows problem as I read that I should over write the copy of windows that was on the hard drive, as it is a hard drive from my previous system. When I tryed to do this Windows got about 6% through the operation and crashed, it then said there had been an error and I should select an option from a menu, trouble was there was no menu (don't you just love microsoft programming)at a later point it informed me that I couldn't over write my copy of windows because I already had a copy,do you think this may be why my modem is having problems ?
Thank you to anyone that offers a sullution 8)
I downloaded the drivers from this site before I transferd the hard drive to the new system and then ran them when I booted it up.
I have got the sound working now, I maaged to get windows to install it's self other it's self finally and after doing that four times the sound works ?( it's a bit scratchy though :( but I'm going to see if I can get a newer driver from the chip maker.
Trouble is without the modem working I can't download directly to my new system and have to use the computer I'm writing this on to transfer drivers on floppys, so they have to be small drivers.
Does anybody have any experience of installing modems on Lan capable systems ? is there a reason why it alocates COM 5 for the modem and not a lower number ? is that why it doesn't work ?
Cheers everyone

MSI-6712 several reboots and unstable 12V
Hi,
After a cold boot my system usually reboots 2/3 times after I login in Windows XP (Clean install). I think it could be the power supply because after these reboots both hdd's have to spin-up again (hdd detection is a few secs longer). So my thought was that my system reboots because my power supply resets because it gets 'overloaded'. (could this be?) but It's again rather strange that it only happens after I login in WinXP
But the strange thing is that after these 2/3 reboots my system boots normal and I can work all day without reboot problems (also 'heavy' game playing). The second thing that PC Alert often shows a very unstable 12V (drops to 10 and then up to 13 according pc alert).
I think I need a bigger power supply but I'd first wanted to be sure if these problems I'm having are typical for a too small power supply. Could anybody give me advice on this matter?
Regards,
Peter

SOUNBLASTER 128I would say your power supply is on the weak side, especially your 3.3V and 12V lines. Those should be much higher (read the trouble guide for the recommended values). You have a pretty hefty processor in that machine, not to mention a very large hard drive that will take more juice to get and stay spinning. I would say your power supply would be a safe bet on the source of your problems. Be sure to take a look at the rest of the trouble guide while you are at it; it couldn't hurt to do so.

I have a PC, running XP Pro SP3, which was built for me nigh on 9 years ago.
Motherboard: MSI-6712 (KT4V-L) Version 1.0 (North Bridge KT400A Rev 80, South Bridge VT8235 Rev 00)
CPU: AMD XP2800+ CPU (Socket A 462, 3000 MHz)
Memory: 1.0GB DDR
GPU: nVidia GeForce FX-5200 (128 MB)
About 4 years back I considered updating the BIOS, but the MS LiveUpdate utility (v 3.5 I think it was) no longer worked (wrong URL). Tried updating it, but the update (can’t remember the version) shut down my system whenever I tried to use it. So I rolled back and left it.
Recently, a program I was evaluating (running on .Net 4 Client Profile) caused my PC to freeze up and after uninstalling I discovered all manner of problems with USB peripherals (recognition and auto-play issues).
Tried to restore a backup (Retrospect Express HD) from a Maxtor One Touch III external drive but it wasn’t having it, presumably because of the drive recognition issues, and a straight System Restore wouldn’t complete (because XP would freeze at log off).
I feared there had been hardware damage, but decided to try a clean re-install of XP Pro. The person who built the PC had left a folder of system set up files (VIA chipset 4in1, LAN, RealTek AC97, nVidia drivers, utilities etc) on the hard drive (which I backed up) but when it came to installing XP, I couldn’t figure out which chipset drivers to install, as there were multiple versions (presumably for his purposes). So I let XP install the default windows drivers and then replaced them with the latest VIA 4in1 set for the KT4V-L from the MSI download page (can’t post link) – driver version 5.11a, release 20.4.2007
Seemed to go well, but it was suggested to me that it might be a good time to update the BIOS. So I installed MSI Live Update 5 and ran a scan. Strange thing is that an automatic scan (which pulls up just the nVidia driver and utilities) reports that none are installed and a manual scan reports that the BIOS, Drivers and Utilities are the latest version and no there is need to update. How can that be? I’ve never updated the BIOS and the only other utility I re-installed is PC Alert 5.
Yet when I run a SIW (System Information for Windows) scan and it reports the following:

How is it that Live Update 5 doesn’t pick this up?
So, apologies for the convoluted post (thought it best to explain the events leading to this), but what to do?
1. Do I need to update the BIOS, given that it has never been done and I now have the latest VIA 4in1 drivers installed?
2. Why is Live Update 5 not reporting the status correctly and is there anything I can do to correct this.
3. Otherwise, if a BIOS update, is warranted, should I go ahead and download directly from the Global MSI webpage and then which version? (can’t post link). I note from the version descriptions that it was v1.7 (26/12/2002) that added support for AMD XP 2800. Strange then that the guy who put together my PC, would not have updated the BIOS from v1.0 to 1.7 at that time!!
4. Should I also update the nVidia driver, and if so, when? Before or after a BIOS update or is that irrelevant?

Edit: Actually, looking at the original SIW scan report I see that there are some errors relating to DirectX. Not sure if I need to update DirectX (surely MS Update does that automatically) and/or the nVidia driver.
5. One other thing that concerns me is that the SIW scan reports that the BIOS is reporting wrong values for the DDR memory. What’s that about?

http://www.windowsbbs.com/pc-hardware/89688-need-ram-recommendations-msi-kt4v-l-2.html#post493343
According to the poster (Post #30), the KT4V-L can support 3gB DDR400.
I looked at the MB in my PC and it is in fact stamped MS-6712 KT4AV v10A (assumed 1.0A ). Both CPU-Z and SIW report it as a MS-6712 v1.0 (BIOS 07.00T 04/02/01, Firmware 101.114)
According to the MSI product webpage, the only difference between the KT4AV and KT4AV_L is that the latter includes an (optional) on-board 10/100 LAN.
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/KT4AV.html#/?div=Detail
The ethernet port on my PC is (as described in Device Manager) is a Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter, whereas in the listed MSI specifications, the optional 10/100 LAN is stated to be a VIA VT6103 LAN controller. So possibly then I was mistaken in assuming that my MB is a KT4AV-L.
Even so, if the statement about the KT4AV-L supporting 3gB DDR400 is true, surely this also applies to the KT4AV ?
Looking at the available BIOS updates on the MSI page, I can see no mention of an upgrade in DDR400 capacity:
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/KT4AV.html#/?div=BIOS
Edit: Ah, the guy in the post specifically refers to a KT4V-L v1.1 not KT4AV-L and I see that it is different product:
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/KT4V---KT4V-L--v1-0-.html#/?div=Detail
What's confusing is that they all designated as MS-6712. So if anyone, like me, does a look up under MS-6712 they could pull up either version, and since the KT4AV/L and KT4V/L have different BIOS update series, I can see how someone could easily flash the wrong BIOS.
That aside, the memory specifications for the KT4V/L are essentially the same as those in the User Guide that came with my KT4AV:
Supports up to 3GB PC1600/2100/2700/3200* DDR SDRAMs
*See Glossary for recommended DDR400 modules - with the largest listed module capacity being 2 x 512MB
So where does this "up to 3GB DDR400 capacity" notion come from. I'd really want to believe it. And if the guy in the PC shop is to be believed, I'd settle for just 2GB.
Edit 2: Oh, boy, so there is a separate product listing for the KT4V-L v1.1:
http://us.msi.com/product/mb/KT4V-L--v1-1-.html#/?div=Detail
Yet, the memory specifications appear to be the same as those for the other MS-6712 versions and BIOS updates are the same as those for the KT4AV-L (very confusing). In fact the downloadable User Guide is the same - 'KT4AV MS-6712 (v1.X) ATX Motherboard'.
Am I missing something here? -
KT4V (MSI-6712) USB Slowness
Hi,
As u can already see from the subject i have the MSI-6712. Im running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 1. I recently purchased the Archos Multimedia Hard Disk which has USB2.0 and firewire. I knew i didnt install the patch, so i did install the patch (VIAEHCX1.INF) and the 4in1 patch. I restarted my PC and it detected the hardware fine as the "JUKEBOX" but it took 4 minutes to transfer a 180MB file, i know this is wrong because i have transfered 500MB in 4 minutes on another PC using USB2.0. In the Device Manager, the USB bit does have 'VIA USB 2.0 Enhanced Host COntroller' but it doesnt seem to be running USB2.0. Can anyone help me,
PM5KI've had no error message about the device being used in a USB2.0 port but i have been able to open the Hard Disk destination, just has a slow transfer rate. Im thinking that it could be the setup in the Device Manager, Do they seem right to you?

Did you check and make certain that nothing was covering the thermal pad before you instadded the cpu? Some have plastic covering over the pad to protect it that has to be removed before installation? It need to be cooler before you can reach 166.
Ok Figured out the problem. thanks alot id have never thought it was the heat causing my issues. apreciate the help im up and running good now. Had to make some Heatsink adjustments. it didnt come out of the box exactly like it was suoposed to be installed.
Much apreciated. -

ESCD error in Kt4V400 (MSI 6712)
I bought a new computer last month with MSI 6712 and AMD XP2000+, and this 3 last days when I start my computer a message error appears saying "ESCD error, press F1 to resume", I don't kwow what can cause the error, but I have not installed anything since I bought it and it has always run without any problem. Can you help me?
ThanksExtended System Configuration Data (ESCD) Its basically how the Bios and the OS connect to each other.
Configuration of hardware and drivers are determined here. If your hardware isn't compatible or not plug in play to your bios then it could cause error. I would check for any missing drivers. Also you can try removing some of your PCI cards to see if it would pass the ESCD.

KT4AV MSI-6712 Dead after BIOS Flash to support XP3000 CPU (Photos)
Hello, I'm a 15-year veteran system administrator and hardware hacker and this is the first time I have ever had what appears to be a truly DEAD mobo killed after a BIOS flash!
Of course I read all the stickies and spent 2 hours research & homework first, before posting here. I tried everything to revive this mobo.
Here's what happened:
MSI-6712 KT4AV system with onboard Audio and Ethernet, Athlon 2800+ CPU, 1GB (2 x 512MB PC2700 DDR) RAM. 300W PSU. It's been running great for years with never an issue. I just got a Athlon 3000+ CPU I wanted to upgrade, but before I did I decided I had better upgrade the BIOS to support this newer CPU, since the BIOS Version History says the later revisions handle the 3000 CPU.
I upgraded the BIOS from DOS Boot via a Bootable USB and it Verified successfully. Then I rebooted and it said something like Invalid CMOS settings, so I entered BIOS Setup to view my new BIOS. I noticed new features like Network Boot ability, so the new BIOS seemed to be a success. (Note this was a soft-reboot, not a hard power-off reboot). I set my normal settings and saved to reboot and the system was DEAD from that point on! No beeps, monitor stays black. CPU fan does run but that's it.
Here is what I have:
(This image is larger if you view it directly)
Things I have tried:
Removing all RAM and vacuuming dust, reseating 1 stick nearest the CPU. (This shouldnt be necessary since I have not removed the ram or disturbed it, but I tried anyway since D-Bracket LED indicates a Memory error.)
Trying a different brand PC2700 DDR RAM stick.
Removing CMOS battery for 10 minutes.
Jumpering Clear CMOS a dozen times. Leaving Clear CMOS jumper overnight (desperate!).
Disconnected all devices from mobo, all HDs, even the AGP video card.
Unfortunately, since the mobo fails so early, it never beeps or initializes the keyboard, so safe-mode INS or CTRL-HOME don't work... so I can't reload my old BIOS backup I carefully saved before I flashed the new one.
As you can see the BIOS chip is soldered directly to the mobo.... so am I 100% dead here? Is there anything I can do?
I am 100% positive I did this BIOS update correctly and there is no reason it should have killed the mobo!Quote
UPDATE: Oh boy, it looks like I may have flashed the WRONG BIOS???!?!
Too possible, that's why i ask
Quote
I'm not sure what my old bios version was, I couldn't find any way to tell? The BIOS flash utility did not display my old version anywhere either.
Well you told that you have created BIOS backup before update the BIOS, ==> "so I can't reload my old BIOS backup I carefully saved before I flashed the new one."
Can you upload it somewhere to check it?
Quote
I now see that I should have instead flashed BIOS v5.4 for KT4AV: http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=552
I am shocked at this mistake... Can such a small discrepency (KT4V-L vs KT4AV) really kill my motherboard? I saw the KT4V-L and thought it was right because my mobo has Onboard LAN...
I'm doomed!
Quote
Can such a small discrepency (KT4V-L vs KT4AV) really kill my motherboard?
Sure yes, will be no wonder -
I still have an MSI-6712 MB with an AGP ATI 9600XT but need to get a more powerfull card (no money for new MB and all that comes with this). I had started looking at some AGP ATI HD4* cards but the first one I saw mentioned possible problems with VIA chipsets (dont recall which card). So this made me wonder. I already have a problem where I cannot go higher the ATI Drivers 8.4 (problems with VIA chipsets) but maybe with a new card, I could pass over that problem.
There is no point in looking for AGP Nvidia cards as the strongest I could find was about the same as my ATI 9600XT. SO I am stuck with going for ATI. Also, having Linux partitions, the ATI drivers no longer support less then an HD* card (so does XP).
I want to know which AGP ATI HD* cards have NO problems AT ALL with an MSI-6712 and all its VIA chipsets.
I am just tring to get better graphics with my games (some stopped working) at the lowest cost possible until I have a better salary (probably next year).X1950 is a powerful AGP card. Still stands ground well. A little power hungry though, and mind you get one with a quiet fan - they can be a bit noisy. Don't know quite, but around 20 Amps on the PSU:s 12 volt line might do, perhaps a little more. Please have a look at the side of your PSU, especially if you are on a budget. - I'm always on a budget, but I'm a clerk sort of.
Haven't heard about the VIA comp. problems. Usually there are ways around every obstacle, or climb it for fun. -
MSI 6712 Power Issues. Brand New
Just got XP 3000+ and MSI 6712. I think the ATX adapter on the mainboard may be @#$!. I can only get power If i half push the connection together, and its only like half the juice to the system. Tried multiple Power Supplies and Mobos, it the only one that does it. Ive inspected the pins, they look perfectly straight. Is there another possibility? Also PC wont turn on with power button pressed and ATX fully connected.
I remembered something similar, with a KM2M. The outcome of that thread wasn't any... :
km2m problem - dead (no fans, no led, nada)
Quote:

the fan worked again, but when the plug is completely inserted, te fan
stops working! Maybe this helps..."

MSI Z87-G45 Gaming, sound from USB mouse?
Hi!
I have some issue from my new computer, see spec below.
For the information I have a MSI Z87-G45 motherboard.
I have some sound that occurs sometimes (specially during the first 2-5 minutes) when i move the mouse around.
It occurs as well sometimes when I been using the computer for a while, basically random just more frequently at the start-up.
It's hard to know from where the sound occurs, could be PSU but today I read something on another forum about the motherboard I'm using:
- Higher sound quality using USB, thanks to special adapted current power.
So i wounder if this can be the case? Is that the reason why i get this noise from inside the computer?
Is there some way to disabled this "feature" in BIOS?
