MSI-6712 several reboots and unstable 12V

Hi,
After a cold boot my system usually reboots 2/3 times after I login in Windows XP (Clean install). I think it could be the power supply because after these reboots both hdd's have to spin-up again (hdd detection is a few secs longer). So my thought was that my system reboots because my power supply resets because it gets 'overloaded'. (could this be?) but It's again rather strange that it only happens after I login in WinXP
But the strange thing is that after these 2/3 reboots my system boots normal and I can work all day without reboot problems (also 'heavy' game playing). The second thing that PC Alert often shows a very unstable 12V (drops to 10 and then up to 13 according pc alert).
I think I need a bigger power supply but I'd first wanted to be sure if these problems I'm having are typical for a too small power supply. Could anybody give me advice on this matter?
Regards,
Peter

I would say your power supply is on the weak side, especially your 3.3V and 12V lines.  Those should be much higher (read the trouble guide for the recommended values).  You have a pretty hefty processor in that machine, not to mention a very large hard drive that will take more juice to get and stay spinning.  I would say your power supply would be a safe bet on the source of your problems.  Be sure to take a look at the rest of the trouble guide while you are at it; it couldn't hurt to do so.

  • MSI B75MA-P45 "Reboot and Select proper Boot device"

Hey guys, I just had this PC delivered to me yesterday, pre-built after my specs. Been using their company for a decade and never had an issue (that said, they might very well have screwed up this time, but I would love some feedback).
So, when I plug in the PC and boot it it get stuck at "Reboot and Select proper Boot device" (and in the bottom right it blink between A2/B4 before it gets to the reboot prompt).
What I have done to try to fix this:
    1) Go into BIOS and swap around the boot order. No luck with that, and I cannot find the SSD HD on the list either.
    2) Confirmed it was set on AHCI mode.
    3) Booted with the MSI Motherboard CD to get to Winki. In the Winki file manager I do see the SSD HD with Windows installed! But the BIOS cannot find it.
    The specs:
    Board: MSI B75MA-P45
    Bios: E7798IMS V1.5
    VGA: ASUS Geforce GTX660Ti
    PSU:  Corsair CX 500
    Intel Core i7-3770
    Corsair Cooling Hydro H55
    RAM: Corsair XMS3 Vengeance CL9
Samsung SSD 840 Series 120 GB
    Seagate Barracuda 2TB
    Win 8
So I'm left a bit dumbstruck here. It seems quite clear the BIOS cannot find the SSD for some reason, but I'm not sure how to sort this?
I mean: I do see Windows in the Winki file manager, so the HD is clearly there and readable. But on the other hand it cannot find it in the BIOS so I can't choose it as a boot drive.
Any suggestions on what might cause this and how I could solve it?
    Thank you.

Wow, that was easier than I thought.. after hours of browsing internet, trying all kinds of BIOS settings, eventually I just opened the case and plugged out the SATA cables and plugged them back in. Boom, it works. Didn't expect it to be that easy since the Winki still could see the HD.
Seems BIOS is more sensitive than the Winki. But there you go, problem solved.

    Hi,
Having serious problems getting the two to run together happy. I have the latest bios 1.8 and it shows support. The chip is inserted ok, but it will only boot at 2000Mhz with a 100Mhz bus. It should be at 166Mhz x 13 multiplier.
    Any one have any ideas.
    Need help big time.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    Leave the multiplier at auto.

I tried to install yosemite yesterday and my computer goes through the whole installation process and then to a blank white screen.  I've rebooted, I've reinstalled several times and get the same result.  Two days wasted and I can't use my computer!!

I don't know if you've already resolved your problem, but I had the same thing, it took me 6 hours to fix it. I had the exact same as you, installed the update and then it went to a white screen. After trying start up holding down cmmd r or holding down the alt key to try to install it again, nothing worked, same result every time. Then an angel came to me here somewhere but I can't find it now to thank him. Start in safe mode, press shift once you hear the start up chime and hold it down until you hear it again. Installation completion box came up and it was working. turn off computer and start up again normally and all is well. Except my final cut pro x doesn't work with it, have to update that now too. same as when I updated to mavericks.
    Hope this helps.

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again.

Did you check and make certain that nothing was covering the thermal pad before you instadded the cpu? Some have plastic covering over the pad to protect it that has to be removed before installation? It need to be cooler before you can reach 166.
Ok Figured out the problem. thanks alot id have never thought it was the heat causing my issues. apreciate the help im up and running good now. Had to make some Heatsink adjustments. it didnt come out of the box exactly like it was suoposed to be installed.

  • Reboot problem with MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum and 250 GB SATA HDD

I'm having a "reboot" problem with my MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. After turning my system on it will run without any problems, until I reboot. After a reboot it will always hang after the initial windows-bootscreen. The HDD-light will remain on. If, instead of going into Windows XP SP2, I try to enter the BIOS after a reboot (DEL) the system will also hang (blank screen with blinking cursor).
It started doing this after I installed the Maxtor 250 GB SATA disk. Before, I didn't have problems rebooting. If I disconnect the Maxtor drive I can reboot and enter BIOS and Windows each and every time. Reconnecting the Maxtor 250 GB SATA drive will return the reboot problem. I always have to use the power swith to get a working system again. It's not enough to do a hard reset (this has the same effect as rebooting).
Here are the details of my system:
    MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (BIOS 1.B)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester, 2 Ghz, 512 KB cache, stepping DH-D0)
    2 x Kingston KVR400X64C25/512, 512 MB, DDR, PC3200 (2,5-3-3-8 T1)
Asus Radeon AX800 Pro (256 MB)
    PSU Antec Sonata 380W
HDD Maxtor 80Gb ATA (6Y080P0, Pri Master)
    HDD Seagate 250Gb SATA (ST3200822AS)
HDD Maxtor 250Gb SATA (6V250F0 - jumpered in SATA150 mode, the mobo wouldn't work with the drive in SATA300-mode)
Aopen COM5232/AAH Pro CD-Writer ATA (Sec Master)
BenQ DW1640 DVD-Writer ATA (Sec Slave)
P.S. The NVidia IDE-drivers are NOT installed. System is not overclocked.

Thank you for all the replies. Upgrading to the latest Nvidia IDE-drivers did not fix my problem. Moving to other SATA-ports did not help either. Upgrading the mobo's BIOS is not really an option (I'm using one version before the most recent and there isn't anything in the fixlist of the latest BIOS).
Now I've contacted Maxtor for (hopefully) a new firmware.

Re: IPAD2 very slow after IOS 8 upgradein response to pacoKAS
SOLVED:  IOS 8 Issues on iPad 2:
I just returned home from a visit to the Genius Bar. Like you and many others, when I upgraded my iPad 2 to IOS 8, it became practically unusable. It was VERY slow, lagged whenever trying to to do anything. Lots of screen freezes and apps spontaneously crashing. I was convinced that the processor on the iPad 2 just couldn't handle the new IOS and I went in to see about restoring to IOS 7.
Thankfully, I was hooked up with a very sharp guy at the bar. The problem is not with the OS, it is with it being an *upgraded* OS. He used the analogy of when you had an older Windows computer and how over time (and over upgrades), they just tended to get slower and slower because of all of the garbage that was carried forward in the upgrades. At those times (and if you've ever had a Windows computer, you get this), the only thing that would speed it up would be to wipe the machine and do a fresh install of the current OS and then reload your apps, and the viola, everything would be fast again. Well, it turns out that IOS can suffer the same problems.
THE FIX:  FIRST, be sure you have a current iCloud backup of your device.  Connect your iPad to a computer that has a clean fresh copy of IOS 8 on iTunes (this is best done with a computer other than the one that you sync your device to because you DO NOT want to restore it from a back up just yet). Ideally, if you do this at an Apple store you'll be assured of the right version there and someone to answer any questions you might have along the way. You then hold the power and home button down to hard-reset the device and continue to hold them down until it reboots into recovery mode. You then follow the instructions on the computer to reinstall the OS on the device (which wipes everything from it and then reinstalls a clean copy of it). Once this is done (which only takes about 15 minutes), your device will reboot and ask you to set it up. Answer the questions about language, location, etc. and continue until it asks you to log into your iTunes account. Once you do that, it will ask if you want to either 1) Set it up as a new device, 2) Restore from iCloud, or 3) Restore from iTunes. Choose (2), restore from iCloud. This will ensure that it brings down "clean" copies of all of your apps and preferences rather than the potentially corrupted ones that might reside in your iTunes backup. That's it! It will take a few hours depending on how much data and apps you have, but I am happy to report that my iPad 2 is now running IOS 8 and it's running as fast as it ever did when it was brand new!
To sum it up, this process 1) Wipes your device and the garbage causing your problems, 2) Loads a clean and bug-free version of IOS 8 to your device, and 3) restores your apps and data so that it looks just like it did before the wipe, with the exception that it works now!  :-)
Note also that by following this process you don't have to go through the painful and laborious process of reloading all of your apps, data and/or settings. iCloud takes care of all of that for you.

  • Occasional resets/reboots and black screens

    Hi everyone....
I have a slight problem with my computer that I hope that you people can shed some light on...
Most of the times it happens when I´m running a game (mostly BF1942), but it has happened when I´ve been using "normal" windows programs (like word, VB6, photoshop etc.)
The difference is that when I´m playing a game and the computer resets it exits the game and drops me on the desktop.
When it resets and I´m not in a game but only another windows prog, it will reboot the computer
O yes, the monitor. It can fade out both in windows and in-game
The monitor "clicks" and fades to black, then it comes back after 1-2 seconds.
I´ve been thinking that it might be a problem with my PSU (especially regarding the monitor issue since the G-card need it´s share of the power)  but I´m also started to think that it might be the memorys that´s making this problem.
    Any ideas??
(I just noticed that my memory settings isn´t on my sys.info, so I will update that when I come home from work)

  • Reboot gives me "Reboot and select Proper Boot Device"

    System info:

BIOS: Latest Official (Will provide when I get home)
VGA: MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr Gaming

    MEM: 16GB Patriot Viper 1600Mhz (2x8GB)
    HDD: Samsung EVO 500GB SSD
PSU: ThermalTake Smart 760W 80 Plus Bronze (single +12V rail, 62)
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
About 50% of the time after a reboot I get an error stating something like "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device".  I should have taken a picture to get it correct but it's an error stating no OS or no boot device found so the exact wording should not matter.
At that point, if I reboot the rig 4-6 times, using the case button or the reset button, it will boot up fine.  I know right away if it is going to error again because my keyboard lights and laser mouse will not get power.  When the keys and mouse get power, it boots up fine.  I am not sure if that has anything to do with this issue but I cannot hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot when the error appears, I have to either power down or reset.
I have unplugged everything from the back of the board (no audio, no lan) and just had the keys and mouse in the USB3 ports and then tried the USB2 ports and the same thing happens occasionally.
I moved the SSD from SATA1 to SATA2 to SATA5 and SATA6 with no solution.  I swapped SATA cables from the provided ones to brand new, never used ones with the same issue.
It was really hard going through Windows update since it had to reboot about 10-12 times because half the time it would not reboot into Windows had to keep hitting the power or reset button.  I have used Live Update 5 to make sure I had all the drivers it suggests.  I also believe Fast Boot is enabled via the applet that pops up after Windows boots.  I also reset the BIOS a few times but it still happens.
One last thing, I got the board when there was a rebate and I already cut the UPC off the box so I cannot return it to Fry's.
    Any suggestions?

Try updating the firmware of the ssd.
Also try updating the bios of the mainboard from the files here: >> BIOSes<<
(I'll check for a newer beta version today)
Try replacing the SATA cable and removing and USB storage devices/
Do you have any other old HDDS etc you didn't like that at one time had an OS install on them?
Thank you for the quick reply.
I didn't state this but I have tried different SATA cables; the ones that came with the board and new ones I had.  No USB devices (except keys/mouse) are connected.
I will check out updating the SSD drive, didn't occur to me to check on that.
I will check to see if there is a different BIOS available than the one that Live Update provided.  I didn't compare, I just assumed it would be the latest official one.
This issue happens with just the SSD installed and with other HDDs installed.  I also went into the BIOS and turned off every boot option except for the Samsung SSD (set all to disabled except the one that listed the Samsung SSD).
