Msi 694D pro and newer Graphics Cards

Hello.
I have a MSI 694D pro MB with 2x P3@1Ghz, 1.5Gb ram (2x512(pc133) + 2x256(pc133), a raid stripe of 2x120Gb WD hdds and a 400W PS running Win2k SP4.
Problem:
I had an Matrox G400 w 32 MB ram and I bought a new GF 6200 card since now even tbs games are 3d and the matrox couldn't keep up.
The GF 6200 is agp 8x but it sais it works well on 4x.
When installed, windows will freeze at startup unless i deactivate "enable agp 4x" from bios, in which case everything works fine except i have NO 3D hardware acceleration...  Wich sucks since it makes the gf 6200 a rather expensive 2D Virge lookalike with 128mb ram...
I tested the gf 6200 on a different system and works fine, even on a agp 4x only board (a kt333 msi).
I also put in a radeon 9600 pro borrowed from someone and the results are the same... Win freezes on startup
After some investigations i found out it crashes upon loading "viaagp*.sys"
I tried the latest availeble via drivers and noting...
Does anyone have any ideea what to do about it?
Thanks alot for any possible information.

Well it's old... it was taken from the server along with the mobo...
It is a very solid design and quiet, even after years of work.
Should I buy a new PS?
To get a complete picture of how much power it is used in my box:
 msi 964D pro MB
 2xP3@1Ghz
 1.5 Gb ram - 2x512Mb + 2x256Mb (pc133)
 2x120Gb WD stripe
 two maxtor 120Gb standalone drives
 - all 4 hdds have add-on coolers
 1 x LG dvd-rw
 gf 6200 graphics card
 audigy2 zs audio card
 intel pro gigabit lan card
 usb2/firewire controller card
 1x system fan
... i guess this covers it, but... how come it works when i disable agp 4x mode in bios?
does the graphics card "power down" parts of the gpu?

  • 1,1 Mac Pro, want new graphics card

I'm looking for a new graphics card. My computer currently has the following:
Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    Slot: Slot-1
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 0 MB
    Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0393
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 3008
I'm looking to get something on the quality of at least a Geforce 8600 or Radeon HD 2600, but I'm not sure if my computer is compatible with those models? Can someone confirm/deny this and propose a good graphics card choice for my model?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Apple Store ATI 5770 - ONLY card being sold. $249 and works in 10.6.5 in all Mac Pro models.
I was very surprised to read the above, because both the HD 5770 and HD 5870 cards are available from Apple's UK Store.
So I have just checked Apple's USA Store website, and both cards are currently available from there too:

  • Mac Pro fried New graphics card after 5 months

    Hi there,
My friend and I bought our Mac Pro's at exactly the same time with the following spec....
    Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 6 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
Unfortunately his graphics card ( the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT) messed up. He replaced it with a ATI Radeon HD 4870. This card has just gone after 5 months!!!
We both use our computers for video work. The only difference is that he plays a lot of Modern Warfare 2 online. I have my suspicions that this could be the problem. Could this be the cause or could it be some kind of motherboard fault??
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks guys

Some people upgraded to (10.5.6, 10.6.x, etc) and blamed the update putting more stress on their 8800's which up and keeled over.
Fan control in OS X isn't as good on these, they aren't your larger dual slot design either.
Games can and when playing, even on a PC, it is a good idea to boost the fans. Can't touch the GPU but you can use SmcFanControl and crank up 3 of the 4 system fans to proactively keep components from heating.
A GPU can usually handle 90*C but I think there were a lot of 8800s out there that were less than perfect too.
If you or someone are in the market, the ATI 5770 or 5870 right now, unless the Quadro 4000 is appealing for your work.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.
However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.
I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .
I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):
    1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?
    2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?
    3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.
    4) Is there any other alternative?

    Hey!
I ran into the exact same issue around the same time like you. I have a early 2011 MBP 15", and the same issue arose. First, my external monitor (and laptop monitor) screen shifted like in your first shot. It happened a couple of times, unplugging/plugging the external monitor would help solve it. I restarted the comp and it didn't happen.
Tomorrow, though, the screen started exhibiting worse issues like you described. Lock ups, screen tearing, graphics glitches etc. I tried to localize the problem to be a software one, but failed. Althought Windows was stable, it also started showing glitches, and eventually they started appearing on the recovery partition as well.
I sort of identified the issue to be with the discrete graphics, as switching to integrated didn't cause the problems.
I brought it into the service center, where they noticed my laptop heats up substantially more than they would expect. They ran a couple of tests, many of which failed because my laptop locked up.
They offered two procedures: one is to switch out the logic board, which is the usual path they would take, and the other one (cheaper) was to actually re-solder in the graphics chip. They said it was a bit detached and not soldered well to the board. Either as a result of falling damage (a slight fall happened, but a very long while ago and I never had issues after that - I slipped while the laptop was in my backpack) or heating over time, it got fuzzed up. I had them do the resoldering and the laptop worked fine for about 10 days, and now it's acting up again.
I'll go for the logic board solution, but if you find any solutions, let me know. If you're interested, I can ping in with the results of the procedure.

  • Speaker problem with t420i and adding a new graphics card question

I bought a t420i about a month ago and noticed that the speakers could not properly handle muliple sounds at once.  What happens is that, say in a music video, the music plays loud and clear, but once the lyrics start the background music fades a bit to about 85% of it's original volume.  I had returned the laptop because of this problem but the replacement I got has the SAME exact problem.
In case im not clear, try this example.  You know the beeping noise you get when you press an incompatible set of keys?  ( like g, h, and b).  When I have this noise going simultaneously with a song, the song's sound fades a bit.
This does not happen with headphones, therefore i believe the problem is with the way the speakers are programmed.
Also, if I bought a t420 with just integrated graphics, could I still add a new graphics card?  Or can you only add a new graphics card to a thinkpad that initially comes with discrete graphics?

I think the main purpose of the nvs4200m is the ability to use three displays (internal + 2 external). Additionally, nVidia has better driver support for games so even though it is around the same speed, the drivers are better.
The shared ram is still used, unless you disable the HD3000 in the BIOS and run with only the nvs4200m at all times.

  • Which New Graphic Card For 2008 Mac Pro?

I'm going to buy Final Cut X, so I'll need a new graphic card for my 2008 MacPro. My current card is an ATI Radeon HD 2600.
I asked AppleCare and they sent me a link to a lot of compatible cards (copied below).
But it turns out that most of these cards need Windows - at least according to specs - and the rest don't have the (2) DVI-D connections I need - so which card should I buy?
    The card has to work with my 2 Acer P243W 24" screens at 1920 x 1200 @ 60 Hz.
    Here's Apple's list:
    •    NVIDIA
    o    GeForce 320M
    o    GeForce GT 330M
    o    GeForce 9400M
    o    GeForce 9600M GT
o    GeForce 8600M GT  Note: OpenCL compatible, but does not meet system requirements for Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor.
    o    GeForce GT 120
    o    GeForce GT 130
    o    GeForce GTX 285
    o    GeForce 8800 GT
    o    GeForce 8800 GS
    o    Quadro FX 4800
    o    Quadro FX5600
    •    ATI
    o    Radeon HD 4670
    o    Radeon HD 4850
    o    Radeon HD 4870
    o    Radeon HD 5670
    o    Radeon HD 5750
    o    Radeon HD 5770

Once you look at what is sold, limits the list. None of those listed require Windows though. What specs? I don't see any specs. And of course nothing listed are Windows, that would be strange. Why you pasted notebook and iMac graphic adapters... unless Apple is selling FCPX for Windows.
Forget the GT120 though some use it with FCPX and are okay with it, save a little though I think 5770 has more processing, bandwidth and of course 1GB DDR5.
support for 6870 PC card is looking like a possible option now, too.
It is more mainly just 5770 vs 5870. Or Quadro 4000.
Amazon has PNY Mac Pro edition $790 vs Apple's $1195 for same card

I include the above for same reason why when the 4870 came out, PC card was 1/2 price and $450 for 5870? really? when XFX and Saffire are under $199.

  • MSI mobos and ATI graphics card incompability!

I don´t know how well known this problem is but I´ve seen it on this forum and when googling the internet you can find it!
The issue is that I can´t get my HD5450(Sapphire) to work on my MS-7267 (945GCM5-F V2) mobo! The screen stays blank but the PC boots up and loads Windows.
The HD5450 works fine on other mobos with different PSU´s ranging from 350 - 600 watts, but when trying different PSU´s on the 945GCM5-F V2 it doesn´t seem to help. I´ve also tried different bios settings, I´ve cleared CMOS, I´ve tried both dvi and vga outputs, I´ve disconnected as much as possible from the mobo except from the graphics card and the PSU, but nothing seems to help!
    Any ideas , someone?
    Tekrar!

    Thanks for all replies!
I had this question on the AMD forum (AMD Game » AMD Technology » Radeon Graphics » MSI mobos and ATI graphics card incompability!) and here are some of the replies:
"Well, its a known issue that older chipsets, like even AMD 580X chipset, doesn't work with 5k/6k series cards without a bios update from the manufacturer of the board.
If its not working / posting / no video ect... You need to bug MSI to update the bios on the board to support the newer 5k/6k video cards. It may or may not happen. Several manufacturers have like Asus, and Gigabyte."
"Same problem. 5450, MSI MS-7267 (945GCM5-F V2). Done the same plus updated msi mainboard bios using msi live update 5 etc. Waiting for reply from makers of graphics card and mainboard.
I should add from what I've read in other threads and forums it seems to be an old mainboard problem not just related to the MSI 945GCM5-F V2. Some other manufacturers of mainboards have sent customers bios upgrades to get their cards working.
As for your pci express version question. Well these problems seem to emerge when people have plugged these pci express version 2.1 cards into their pci express 1st generation slots. What exactly the problem is here? Leave that for manufacturers/experts to answer."
"Tek , its hit or miss on the board + chipset combination on if the card will work or not. Sometimes they will work in old boards, Sometimes they will not w/o manufacturerer support.
Its completely random from what I've seen on the forums at the times they were released , when people with old boards were asking why it wasn't working. And what they did to solve it. Most all of them emailed the manufacturer. Some of those said manufactureres provided beta bios back to the customers, some said your out of luck."
Its true, this MSI MS-7267 (945GCM5-F V2) isn´t a new mobo, but when I get the 5450 to work without problem with an even older fujitsu mobo (last bios update long time ago) and a 350 watts PSU I think something´s wrong.
So, a bios upgrade would probably fix it if the manufacturer (in this case MSI) just wanted to!
    Tekrar!

  • Can I put a new graphics card and power supply in my computer.

Hey all, I have the P7-1459 comp and it is good, but i was hoping to maybe give it a gaming boost. But i havent been able to find out if it could handle what i want to do. The new Graphics card would require a 450W power supply and i dont know if this comp could handle it. Anyone know one way or another? Need some help.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Joshua, you are very welcome!
I am sorry that I misunderstood your question.  I thought that you wanted to know if the computer would handle the card.
Yes, you can upgrade the power supply unit (PSU).  I suggest measuring the existing PSU and comparing those measurements to the one that you choose.  I like OCZ and Corsair.  They will provide enthusiast quality with a reasonable price.  A good video card requires clean, stable power.  I recommend at least 500W; 550W to 600W would be even better.  This would allow for some future upgrades.  The computer only uses the amount of power needed to run the components.
    I hope this helps.

    Hi-
Its crazy and i didn't know that you could get so meny different cards for Macs ?
Because of the lack of Mac cards, enterprising individuals have figured out how to make PC cards into Mac cards.
Ofcause some is hacked to work with Mac..
The ROM has been replaced with an equivalent Mac ROM. The cards are, for all practical purposes, Mac cards.
Would they be safe to use ??
    Properly done, Yes.
Plz check it out and let me know if its safe to get cards like this.. Thx again

  • Any recommendations for a new Graphics card for Prem Pro 2014 (Windows) that offers Mercury Playback Engine GPU acceleration?

    Hi.
I am led to believe I could benefit from GPU acceleration when editing as my PC is a little under spec. I do have a card but when I switch to GPU acceleration it does work but every time I stop moving / playing / scrubbing on the timeline the preview screen goes black.
I am not sure which might be the best card to obtain for my reqs. I dont think I put the biggest of demands on the software but it does still struggle. Most of my editing is 3 - 10 min long interviews. 2 camera multi-cam editing. I invariably have need to edit RGB curves, three way colour corrector, transitions and sometimes Neat noise reduction. Any of those leaves my PC struggling. All the usual titles, music & voice-overs etc but nothing too heavy going like making films or inserting lots of video lines.
I also do an occasional bit of work in After effects too.
    PC spec is:
Intel Xeon CPU 1.86GHz (2 processors)
12GB RAM which I am going to upgrade to 16GB
    64 bit op system
    Windows 7
    Radeon HD 5450 graphics card.
Any guidance would be much appreciated

Thanks for insight. I am not technical but I suspect your right about the base technology of my PC. The processors and RAM (even if I upgrade) are probably too limited. I was not so sure about the relationship between the main processor and the graphic card. I rather hoped that the card would get round the limitations of the CPU's.
I maybe need to invest some time looking in to improving the spec of my PC. Any thoughts on a suitable spec from anyone would be helpful bearing in mind my relatively narrow editing needs.
Even so I will look at the GTX 660 and see what it might offer. The only reason I thought the 5450 might offer GPU acceleration was because the option was available to select in the preferences in PremPro. Figured it wouldn't be an option otherwise. Certainly doesnt seem to work correctly or offer any advantage so gone back to software only.
This is not going to be a quick or inexpensive resolution by the looks of it :-)
    Thanks again for input.
